Welcome to this August edition of Spotlight In this month’s Spotlight there are a couple of articles by two young people who have been training as youth workers in Uffculme and I do hope you enjoy reading all about their experiences and time with us getting to know some of the local young people. Please join me in saying a big thank you to them both for all they have shared while working in Uffculme. Please also pray for them as they continue to explore God’s plans for their lives! As a church St Mary’s are committed to finding creative ways to enable young people to reach their full potential and for those interested to offer opportunities to explore the Christian faith and Vicki and Peter have been part of this vision. I am also delighted to be able to share that we have appointed a new trainee and Claire joins us in September! My work with young people continues alongside my role as parish priest and last month I really enjoyed having eight work experience students developing their employability skills through community action and helping out in Square Corner. I also had great fun working with some Year 11 leavers who came to visit 6 primary schools with me to help the students think about moving up to secondary school and helped run a very exciting story time for the Kingwood children in the church. (That is why there were three boats, a net and lots of fish in the church!!) So as we enter the month of August I hope that you can explore your creativity and potential and even begin to discover something of God’s plans for your life. Have a wonderful Summer!

Reflections of a trainee youth worker It seems only a few months ago that I started here, doing a long week of team building activities with the new year 7s at Top School. Time has flown since I have been here. It seems only fitting, then, that I share some of that time with you! My first week here was a crazy one. I was dropped into the deep end. 5 days of team building activities with each tutor group of year 7s. At first I was a little nervous; not knowing any of the kids or teachers and being expected to act as a leader. To begin with I was pretty rubbish at being a leader but as the hours wore on I got slowly better. All in all, the week was great! It was long and for someone who had never done a week of work before in his life, this was exhausting! The next big thing that happened was the slum survivor event. After weeks of planning, hoarding cardboard boxes and getting sponsors, Vicki, Tony Lane and myself waited in the Church for the arrival of the young people who had signed up. Their first task, after being assigned slum families and money, was to grab cardboard and polythene from our makeshift dump and create their living quarters for the event. Food for the night was warm rice and an optional (expensive) sauce. The breakfast in the morning, after a long night of sleeping on cardboard, was the same thing but cold. All in all, it was a fantastic event and much fun was had. In the end we raised around £300. Something that has now come to an end is the ‘Film, faith and photography’ after school club that Vicki runs. I was privileged enough to be a leader for this and it was a brilliant thing to be a part of. I really loved seeing what the kids could do with a camera (with a little help from Vicki). I think my favourite thing about it was seeing how determined they could be when they had an idea in their head. Invariably that idea would be a fantastically creative idea and the end product was of a very high quality due to the pure determination that went into it. Not long before Christmas we held a Youth Open Mic night in Square Corner. After spending the afternoon setting up the hordes of equipment we borrowed, the young people started to turn up. We had a mixture of acts; from piano solos, to a muse cover. We even had someone play the Ukulele! It was so encouraging to see everyone's talent and to see everyone else appreciating them.

Something that I have been running is our Sunday night youth group. We meet in Square Corner of a Sunday night, have some worship together and then hear a talk about a subject and discuss what we think about it. From Christmas to Easter we had talks around the theme of worship. Worship is something that I am passionate about and so I wanted to share that passion with the young people. The theme from after Easter has been “Famous Christians”. We have been looking at famous Christians people who have done inspiring things and looking for ways that we can be inspired to do things. For instance, we looked at Kaká, the Brazilian football player and how he is not afraid of sharing his faith with thousands of people, even on public TV! I have really enjoyed being a part of that group and sharing some of my personal views on things as well as sharing my passion for the Bible. Which brings me to the my next step! I have recently applied for a degree course at Moorlands Bible College. I really want to get into the Bible and what it means. As an interesting twist, I have recently discovered a passion to learn New Testament Greek and Old Testament Hebrew. This is because the original languages that the Bible was written are not only more beautiful than English but also, more elaborate. This means that, where the English has one word to mean many things (like Love), in Greek it has many! This makes the Bible even more exciting to me and I really look forward to the possibility of studying it in detail! The time has now come for me to thank people. First off, I would like to thank Vicki for putting up with me for a year. If you ask her, she will tell you how annoying I can be at times. I also want to thank Selina for keeping my focused. I haven't always been the best trainee but you have taught me many things that I will keep with me forever. I'd like to thank Tim Boxer, my Mentor, for being there for me when I needed you most. I'd like to thank Jeff and Karen Green for letting my live in their house and eat their food. They have become like second parents to me and I have enjoyed every hour of with them. Most of all, I'd like to thank each and every young person I have come to know over this year. You have made my work here worth it. Without you guys I'd have nothing to do!

Peter Dawkins Trainee Youth Worker in Uffculme September 2012 – July 2013

Reflections from our youth worker! So, a whole two years has now gone by. And I think they may have been two of the maddest years of my life so far! Some of my highlights have been the weekends away such as St Georges House, Lee Abbey and Wildside as well as the Sunday night youth group. All of these times have been wonderful opportunities to get to know the young people. I have also had the pleasure of setting up and running Film, Faith and Photography - a group looking at creative ways of exploring faith. Looking back over the last two years it’s wonderful to see how far the young people have come during this time. Do look at www.squarefish.org.uk to see some of their films and photographs! Something that I have been made very aware of over my time here is God’s timing. Before I came here I prayed for somewhere to go, and just as I began to think nothing would emerge this placement In Uffculme came up. Again, as I’ve been applying for jobs recently I’ve prayed about what to do and where to go, I’ve lamented failed applications, been impatient and haven't really put all my faith in Gods plans, but now God has answered my prayers. I prayed for a job working with homeless young people, in the South West and that I’d still get to do at least one week of youth camp over the summer - I got all that and a second week of camp too! In Ephesians chapter 1 Paul writes about God’s plans coming together, about how we are known and chosen my God and how we have received his

blessing and grace. In seeing what I believe to be God’s plan for my life coming together I feel I get a glimpse of another facet of God’s bigger plan, and of His love and mercy and his desire to make all things work together for goodness and I’m reminded of Jeremiah 29:11 where is says “for I know the plans I have for you, plans for good and not for evil.” It’s been wonderful to have been a part of so many great things and feels so odd to have all these ‘lasts’ - and to be preparing for so many ‘firsts’! I’m soon to be moving house and starting a new job. I’ll be working in Somerset at a YMCA helping to house and support young people and adults. As well as looking forward to a new job, house and everything that’ll come with it, I’m also looking forward to seeing what will happen next here in Uffculme - I’m already anticipating coming back to visit and find out how everything’s going! I was delighted to interview and enjoy a hand over day with the new trainee Claire Stoney and I think she will be brilliant! Throughout my time here I’ve been tremendously blessed by great mentors, hosts, young people, colleagues and friends and I don’t think I’d have been able to get to where I am now if hadn’t been for the people here who have invested so much in me. So a massive thank you to everyone who has supported me practically and financially over the last two years.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped with our Annual Duck Race this year, either by selling ducks, buying ducks, helping on the day or providing great prizes. Although it was postponed due to weather conditions, it was a brilliant success the following Sunday, even though the Ducks wanted to carry on swimming! It was also a sad time for staff as 18 of our children graduated from Preschool, we wish them well in their new Primary Schools. Thank you to all of the parents & children that attended. Also thank you to Uffculme Primary School for the use of their hall. August brings our Holiday Club activities, if you would like to book places, please ring 01884 841010 for details. It promises to be lots of fun. If you would like to book in the Summer holidays, we can book you in at short notice. See the separate advert.

THE JUBILEE PARADE The day dawned well in Uffculme, As the folks turned out to see The QE2 festivities For Her Diamond Jubilee. Sixty years our Good Queen Bess Has sat upon the throne Through good and bad times, thick and thin. She's made the role her own. To celebrate th'occasion A royal coach had been made To bear a chosen princess In the Jubilee Parade. The coach, not drawn by horses, But by horse-power, 4 x 4, Was painted black and liveried gold, As in the days of yore. It bore two footmen fore and aft, All costumed to the hilt, And all the wheels and windows Were picked out in gleaming gilt. The coachman's name was Kindon (Spence), A man who did us proud, As he drove the gleaming coach at head Of celebrating crowd. But best of all was Megan, Our princess for the day, Waving from the window As she passed along her way.

Dressed in pink, tiara crowned, And such a pretty maid, She carried out her duties In the Jubilee Parade.

The people clapped and photographed The coach along the way, And Union flags were fluttering On this sparkling Diamond Day. And even though the rain came down, It mattered not a jot, For Uffculme folk were happy. They are a cheerful lot. And so we came to Magelake To meet the assembled press, For Megan must be photographed In tiara and pink dress. What plans and schemes, what work was done, And every effort made For this joyful celebration And our wonderful Parade. As time goes by and we all age, Our memories will fade. But Uffculme ne'er will forget The Jubilee Parade. Pam Golding

PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT FROM UFFCULME PRIMARY SCHOOL Uffculme Primary School is celebrating some extremely good SATs results this year. In Key Stage 2 results were a fantastic improvement on the previous year across the board with 90% of children in Year 6 achieving Level 4 or better in writing and 82% of children achieving Level 4 or above in maths. Both of these figures are also significantly higher than National averages for last year. “The children and the staff have all worked incredibly hard this year, right across the school and have deserved their success. They should feel very proud,” said Mrs Shinn, the Headteacher. In Key Stage 1, results were also good with children achieving well in all subjects, particularly in maths. The percentage of children achieving Level 3 in all core subjects is above the previous year’s national average. The school is also celebrating a 100% pass rate with the newly introduced Year 1 phonics screening and the children in Foundation Stage have achieved above target (60%) in Early Years Foundation Stage attainment. “It is wonderful to see our maths results improve this year. It has been our major focus for improvement and has obviously had a significant impact on progress and attainment right across the school,” Mrs Shinn continued, “We are very lucky to have an extremely skilled and committed teaching staff who are supported very effectively by a great team of teaching assistants.” Both children and staff can now look forward to a well-deserved summer break. ______________________________________________________________

MEMORIES OF THE LONDON INN I grew up at the Butchers shop in High Street, next door to the London Inn. My first memory of the Innis of straw being spread on the road outside to deaden the noise of traffic, much of it horse drawn. The landlady, Mrs John Welland, was seriously ill and later died. A few years later, when I was about 12, I was sent to the Inn to play draughts with Mr Welland in the early afternoon. This was in the “snug. There was little conversation but I used to win now and then. I expect Mr Welland was being kind. Mr Welland, helped by his brother Philip, used to keep a few dairy cows in The Park and adjoining fields and milk them in the building next to the river bridge. The milk was carried in pails suspended from a yoke to a small dairy behind the pub. We used to collect it in metal cans, morning and evening. When I was in my early teens Jack Redwood (father of Peggy Hutchings) came to work at the shop as errand boy. His brother worked as odd job boy at the London Inn. This led to Jack and I visiting the pub at lunchtime to use the skittle alley. No-one seemed to mind. The equipment was a bit on the large side for me but I soon got to grips with it and learned about floppers and spare. Many years later when I return to High Street after the war, I answered the door early one evening to Mrs Mutton, who was housekeeping for Mr Welland. Would I come to the pub? A very rough-looking man was in the bar and she was afraid he might harm Mr John. I agreed to go and immediately thought of Tom Small, market gardener, chorister and special constable, who lived near the foot of Chapel Hill. Luckily he was home and we went to the bar of the pub, ordered a couple of beers and sat down opposite the potentially troublesome customer. After a few minutes he got up and left the pub. And that was that. For many years I worked in the Welfare Services Department at Somerset County Council and used to suggest venues for the office party at Christmas. One year, when Mrs Guppy was landlady, we chose the London Inn. Mrs Guppy and I chose the menu and opted to start the proceeding with a fruit punch which was moderately alcoholic. All the staff were on one bus. It was late so after half an hour we added another bottle of spirits to the punch. This was repeated. When the staff arrived they were given a generous glass of punch each and things went with a swing from the word go. One or two had to crawl of the bus when it returned to County Hall, Taunton, and it went down as one of the best Christmas parties ever. The Cricket Club held their AGMs at the London Inn and I remember one when Sir Leonard Costello was President, and in the Chair, and I was fixture secretary. I had written to Seaton C.C. Their fixture secretary had said that he had been at school with Sir Leonard who had been a very clever boy but not much of a cricketer. I told the Club that we had not been given a fixture so they had to draw their own conclusions. This amused all except Sir Leonard. He pointed out that he had played for his College at University. Now that we are well into summer, the rain is not so cold and the schools have broken up. UCM thought we would bring a bit of cheer to all the gardeners who have tried in vain to keep the fat slimey slugs off all the young plantswe are offering all our products at ½ price with free delivery. That is the great sieved compost, the courser unsieved compost and the woodchip if available. Any order placed in August will be at ½ our already low price— an opportunity not to be missed. This applies to any order placed in August, delivery can be in September or even October. The weather has caused lots of weeds, plants, shrubs and trees to grow rapidly so we are now getting more green in which is great as this is the basis of the whole operation. Please separate the grass and soft material from the woody as this makes the shredding more efficient. We are planning to move the plastic collection area over to the right between the 2 shipping containers. It is planned to cover the space so if any one has any sheet material that is 12' or more in length that they wish to get rid of we would be happy to hear from you. The aim is to keep the sacks cleaner and everything and everyone dryer. When the sacks are collected they are transported to a warehouse near Torrington, there they are tipped manually onto the floor and checked prior to baling. Our aim is to make the collecting and the sorting a more pleasant process. Please note – we do not want old fence panels or sections of rotten shed, they may be wood but they also contain nails so we have to dispose of them at our expense, the same applies to root balls , they will not go through the shredder.

I am hoping to take a back seat this year as Ann Jones has kindly agreed to take on the Secretary's Post with my assistance so many thanks and best wishes to her. Many thanks Jim Turner

Uffculme Village Hall, Bridge Street, Uffculme, EX 15 3AX

Well done to all those brave souls who were prepared to put their trust in good fortune, and defy the elements to support us on 30 June, when the committee members had arranged to hold our annual Village Fete. In the event our prayers were answered, and we sustained only one light shower on what turned out to be one of the better days of the week! As a precaution, many of the stall holders were accommodated indoors, together with cream teas being served in the Garden Room, and Mr. Coleman providing ample traditional Bar-B-Q fare from the shelter of his Gazebo on the lawn, all of whom reported steady trade throughout the afternoon. Our thanks are due to the ladies and gentlemen for their time and effort in preparing the food and keeping our patrons so well fed and entertained! Kingwood Childcare were a great attraction for the younger children, with their pets corner featuring giant snails from the rainforests, and some wonderful facepainting going on, not to mention some "messy" fun things for the children to do ! To round the afternoon off, we held the traditional Raffle, without which, every organization in Uffculme would grind to a halt! For this we give a particularly big Thank You to Maddie Judd, for organising this event and collecting so many prizes. The Village Hall committee are so grateful to those individual people who donated prizes, and in particular to the many Traders and Companies in the Village who made such generous contributions. I have never seen so many tickets sold at one of our raffles, which raised almost ÂŁ110, probably a record for one of our events, thank you one and all. Overall the hall raised ÂŁ246, which will help with our running costs, which continue to rise. Sadly we sustained regular attacks of petty vandalism over the last year, which have cost over ÂŁ1000 in repairs, money that we would wish to use for the benefit of our clients. Finally, our grateful thanks are due to Christine Scantlebury for all her hard work planning and co-ordinating our annual fete, which was much enjoyed by one and all!! Just as a reminder, this year's Treasure Hunt takes place on Saturday 4 August, and is in the form of a modest walk around the outskirts of Uffculme, starting from the Garden Room at the Village Hall between 4.00pm and 5.30pm,followed by a super BBQ (weather permitting), BYO tipple, tea & soft drinks available. For those unable to walk far, you are still welcome. R.J.H. Chairman

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS As the European Parliament packs up in Brussels and moves 5000 people to reconvene in Strasbourg at a cost of 200 million Euros a year to the tax payer, so this month the parish council moved to its second home at Ashill village hall, at absolutely no cost to the tax payer! First on the agenda was the Waste Plan. It was reported there was a steady flow of visitors to the Open Day on the 15th June. The consultation period will come to an end on the 3rd August. There is a lot of important information to digest and the Waste and Minerals Group have done a formidable job of collating it. Everyone in the village should visit their web site (www.culmwastemineralsgroup.org.uk), click on their Facebook link and then the ‘like’ button to show support. At present only 43 people have done so and this will be seen by Viridor and others that the village isn’t very concerned. Magelake is nearly finished. Some snagging work is being done and the final planting will be finished off later in the year. It has been a mammoth job to manage this project and praise should go to all the councillors involved. An official opening ceremony is planned for the 31st August at 4pm. Uffculme Central is continuing, with site meetings and communications to gain Conservation Area approval. The first stage of renovating the Shambles will start after the bunting comes down. Plans and 3D drawings have been produced are being reviewed by working party. I would all hope that in an emergency the village would rally around to help each other, but trying to plan ahead for such a disaster, has been difficult. The Emergency Plan was supposed to be a record of who can help with what. Things like who has keys to the church, village hall and schools etc. Who has chain saws and 4x4s. Who has medical experience. But out of the whole village only 30 residents filled in the forms. I'm sure we will all be willing to help each other, even if we're not so keen to fill in forms. The Feed Mill was mentioned, the newspapers had been in touch (and since published a story) but there aren’t any decisions made regarding what will happen to the site and how many of the jobs will be lost. We hope this will mean a significant reduction in lorry movements through the village. On highways, the bollard on Commercial Road has been replaced and is still in place! Parking along Coldharbour is still a concern - apparently an ambulance couldn’t get through to a property there recently and the patient had to be carried up the road. A fire engine wouldn’t stand a chance. Regarding the overhanging vegetation up Chapel Hill which we had been trying to get cut, we have noticed is slowing traffic and making people more cautious which is a good thing especially for the school kids walking on the road. So as the sun set across beautiful Ashill (a rare sight this month) the council meeting came to a close. Regards, Gary Cook
