MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Tēnā koutou katoa Graduation is a time for celebration. It’s the culmination of all of the hard work you have put in to achieve your qualification. When you receive your award, take a moment to reflect on your journey here – the late nights working on assignments, giving up time with your friends and family to study, balancing work and UCOL commitments. So much goes into completing a tertiary qualification. 2020 was especially challenging, with many of you having to learn remotely for part of the year. Tertiary education requires dedication and self-directed learning, and the COVID-19 restrictions only amplified that. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves for adapting to new types of learning and completing your qualifications under such unprecedented circumstances. As you begin the next chapter of your life, remember that you will always be part of the UCOL whānau. You just have a different place in the whānau: you’re a UCOL graduate. Smart, talented, and respected in their chosen fields, UCOL graduates make an impact in their communities all over the world. At UCOL we’re all about making learning connections, so I encourage you to stay connected with the people who supported you throughout your time here. Our staff beam with pride when they hear about their former students’ successes. We hope to see you back on campus in the future, whether it’s for further study, to mentor students, or even as staff members. On behalf of everyone at UCOL, congratulations and we wish you the best for your future pursuits. Dr Linda Sissons Acting Chief Executive

UCOL 2021 Graduation

OUR GRADUATES At UCOL we celebrate and value our graduates. They are doing amazing things and making contributions all over the globe. Here are some great examples.

Aaron McGregor

Evie Dewes

Business Graduate

Early Childhood Education and Care Graduate

Studying at UCOL allowed Aaron (Aarona) McGregor to rediscover his passion for accounting and now he’s running his own practice.

Evie Dewes was in the first class for the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care at UCOL Wairarapa, and now she’s excited to start her first fulltime teaching job.

Aaron (Ngā Rauru, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, and many other affiliations) came to UCOL Whanganui after years of working in middle management roles. He had loved accounting as a youngster and wanted to add those skills to his repertoire, so he enrolled in the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Management and Accounting pathways). Aaron excelled in his studies, maintaining an A+ average. He was awarded several scholarships including the Ngā Raumanako Māori Scholarship, a national scholarship to help Māori accounting students reach their career aspirations and contribute to Māori economic and financial well-being. After completing his diploma, Aaron studied a Bachelor of Business Studies through Open Polytechnic, double majoring in Accounting and Business Management. Now he’s operating his own accounting practice in Whanganui and is busier than he’s ever been. “The name of my business, Awhi Nuku Awhi Rangi is an old reference to knowing how each person plays a part in looking after one another, especially the environment; Papatuanuku, the earth and Ranginui, the sky – and that’s really important to me.” For Aaron, working with people and building relationships is the best part of his job. “Accounting is not just numbers. It’s getting out there and seeing what businesses do, and helping them find solutions and putting smiles on people’s faces. Trying to get clients to a place where they want to be has always been my focus.”

2

UCOL 2021 Graduation

Evie had always wanted to work with children in some way. While in Year 12 at St. Matthew’s Collegiate School she decided that early childhood education was for her. “I want to help bring up the next generation and provide them with a great learning environment,” says Evie. As part of her studies, Evie completed practicums at two local early childhood centres. The experience was valuable as she got to learn more about preparing activities for children and how centres have their own philosophies that they follow. While working towards her diploma, Evie decided that she wanted to take on further study, so UCOL staff worked with Te Rito Maioha to cross credit her grades towards a degree. This allowed Evie to smoothly transition into the second year of Te Rito Maioha’s Bachelor of Teaching (ECE). During her degree studies, Evie did relieving work at BestStart centres in Hamilton and Taupō, and at a privately-owned Taupō centre. This ultimately helped her secure a fulltime job at BestStart Richmond Kindy after she graduated. Now a fully qualified teacher, Evie is excited about what the future holds and is excited about getting fully registered. “The best part about working with children is that every day is different.”

Sahiba Kaur

Suvisal Thilina

Laboratory Science Graduate

Information & Communications Technology Graduate

Sahiba Kaur is working on the frontline of New Zealand’s COVID-19 response. A laboratory technician, Sahiba is part of a specialist team responsible for virus testing.

Growing up in Sri Lanka, Suvisal Thilina had an interest in technology and learning how to use new software. UCOL’s Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology gave him the tools to turn that interest into a career.

Originally from Himachal Pradesh, India, Sahiba moved to New Zealand in 2016 to study laboratory science. Not wanting to do a whole degree, Sahiba enrolled in UCOL Manawatū’s National Diploma in Science (now the New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science). When Sahiba graduated in 2017, she was thrilled to be offered a job almost immediately. “I got a position working for MedLab Central right after I finished my diploma, working in their specimen services team. After five or six months they were impressed and promoted me to the micro department. They offered to help me study further with their in-house programme, and now I am a fully registered medical laboratory technician.” When New Zealand’s COVID-19 response started ramping up, there were limitations to the testing that was possible – which lead to the creation of MedLab Central’s own COVID-19 testing laboratory. “It was a pretty interesting start! An email came around the office, talking about how they were thinking about setting up a new lab, and asked for volunteers who had experience with pipette work. I was well-practiced with that from my UCOL study, so I put my name forward to help.” “I was nervous to start, but I feel really proud to be a part of this team.”

3

UCOL 2021 Graduation

Suvisal chose to major in Software Engineering, and says the programme offered hands-on experience and options to help choose a career path. “I think a lot of UCOL students get jobs because of the hands-on training they get while at UCOL. Employers value that training and expect you to do research, learn, and work hard.” In the final year of his degree, Suvisal completed an internship with Manawatū IT company Master Business Systems. There he developed an automated testing suite for the company’s widelyused building consent software. Suvisal made such a great impression that Master Business Systems hired him as an IT Support Analyst once he finished his studies. “The team at Master Business Systems were really supportive during the internship. They really appreciated the research I was doing on test automation tools,” says Suvisal. Master Business Systems was acquired by Objective Corporation in November 2019, which opened up new opportunities for Suvisal. “I now work at Objective’s new, state-of-the-art facility that provides teams with cross-collaboration opportunities that lay the foundation for innovation and outstanding software.” Suvisal works as an IT Support Consultant and aims to rise through the Objective Corporation ranks to become a Software Engineer or System Administrator.

ACADEMIC REGALIA Modern day academic regalia originates from the High Middle Ages, the 12th and 13th centuries, when early universities adopted traditions arising from the church. Today’s academic dress of the gown, hood and cap, has origins in the clerical dress of that era.

CAP

HOODS

The trencher or mortar board arises from the preferred form of head dress of the laity of the medieval period. There are two styles; the bonnet and the trencher. UCOL utilises the trencher head dress in its academic regalia. It has a hard top square above a soft cap with a tassel fastened from the middle, which is worn on the left side once the wearer has graduated. The trencher is only worn by those who have been conferred with a degree.

The hood is a remnant of the cowl worn by monks to cover their head and shoulders in order to keep warm. When not used for warmth, it was thrown back to hang down the back, as it is worn today. The tail, which was probably longer, was used to tie around the neck in order to keep the hood on.

GOWNS The gowns are based on the types of gowns used widely by both the clergy and laity of the church in the Middle Ages. Like most New Zealand institutions, the UCOL gowns are based on the University of Cambridge gowns. The UCOL Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor gowns have long, full wide-mouthed sleeves, while the Masters gown has origins in the Tudor period, with its long closed sleeves with a pocket-like extension. It has been suggested that these pockets may have originally been used to store paper and food. A korowai (cloak) may be worn by graduands or staff members over the Cambridge gown. For degree Graduands the hood is displayed over the top of the cloak.

Only degree holders wear a hood in addition to the gown, with each degree having a designated colour. The size and shape of the UCOL hoods, like most New Zealand institutions, are based on the University of Cambridge Master of Arts hoods. The hoods are the most colourful aspect of the regalia. Curiously, the higher the degree, the less ornate the hood usually becomes. Bachelor degrees typically have a trim of either fur or braid, in addition to the colourful hood lining. This is thought to have originated from the fact that the more senior members of monastic orders were able to sit closer to the fire, hence had less need for fur trimmed hoods which were required for warmth by the more junior members who were further from the fire. The Bachelor with Honours Degree dispenses with the fur or braid, using a plain ribbon trim, while the Masters degree has no trim to the hood.

SASH / STOLE The sash/stole had its origins in the Middle Ages as an ecclesiastical vestment in the shape of a narrow strip of material worn around the shoulders. At UCOL, Diploma holders wear a sash of gold satin and green and gold braid over the top of their gown, while Graduate or Post Graduate holders wear a coloured stole.

WAIRARAPA GRADUATION CEREMONY 1.00pm • Thursday 18 March 2021 Carterton Events Centre, Holloway Street, Carterton 2020 was a year of great growth for UCOL in the Wairarapa region. UCOL teamed up with Eastern Institute of Technology and the Ministry for Primary Industries to breathe new life into Taratahi Agriculture Training Centre and launched a range of short courses at the site. From dairy farming to apiculture and agricultural contracting, these courses have given students the chance to experience life on the land and learn skills that will help boost the region. The courses have been a great success, attracting learners looking for a career change and those needing to reskill due to COVID-19. UCOL Wairarapa also established a relationship with Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre to teach taster and certificate level conservation programmes, giving learners hands-on training in caring for our wildlife and environment. With a focus on filling skill shortages in the region, UCOL Wairarapa introduced a suite of new business certificate and diploma programmes in 2020. The campus reintroduced the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Support Work and Mental Health & Addictions), which gives students the skills to work in aged-care and rehabilitative facilities. With these programmes in place, we’re better positioned to help our region’s post COVID-19 recovery.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Marko Cunningham Marko Cunningham is a renowned rescue worker, whose volunteer work and charitable efforts have helped thousands of people across South East Asia. Wellington-raised, Marko moved to Thailand in 2000 to teach English, but ended up teaching science. That year, Marko was the first foreigner to become a registered rescue worker in Thailand when he joined Ruamkatanyu Foundation. Since then, Marko has volunteered as a medic and public relations officer for Ruamkatanyu Foundation, providing emergency support amidst natural disasters, coups, and major political protests. Marko also trains other volunteer medics. For his role in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami recovery, Marko was awarded the New Zealand Special Service Medal and the Thailand Friendship Medal. In 2010, Marko established the Bangkok Free Ambulance. This charity operates two ambulances in Bangkok and provides free CPR and first aid training. Marko personally operates a motorlance, providing advanced medical care. Free emergency services like Bangkok Free Ambulance play an important role due to the city’s large population, traffic congestion, and underfunded public ambulances. Bangkok Free Ambulance also works with non-government organisations to develop free and effective emergency medical systems in South East Asia. In neighbouring Myanmar, Marko is known as the ‘Grandfather of Rescue’ for his role in establishing the country’s first free volunteer rescue service. Marko has maintained his charitable work on top of a 20-year career as a teacher. While the COVID-19 pandemic limits international travel, Marko is in New Zealand working as a teacher and manny (male nanny).

HOROWHENUA GRADUATION CEREMONY 1.00pm • Friday 19 March 2021 Horowhenua District Council - Civic Area 126 Oxford Street, Horowhenua, Levin Established in 2018, Horowhenua is UCOL’s newest campus. It offers programmes in Beauty, Early Childhood Education, Business, Health and Wellbeing, Cookery, Food and Beverage Service, and Construction to help meet the needs of the region. Free Adult and Community Education (ACE) Te Reo Māori programmes are also taught at the campus. UCOL Horowhenua has gone from strength-to-strength over the past few years. One hundred and eleven students studied with UCOL Horowhenua last year, including those enrolled in programmes delivered in partnership with Horowhenua Learning Centre (HLC). Enrolments for 2021 are tracking for further growth. UCOL is making its mark in the Horowhenua community, with increased collaborations and work placements with local industry. 2020 saw more campus culture develop at UCOL Horowhenua, with shared lunches and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori celebrations bringing students and staff together. The year also saw Student Success staff have a greater presence on campus, providing academic and wellbeing support to students. The Horowhenua team were proud to set up their own student pantry, supplying students in need with food and grocery items. This initiative has proven to be helpful for students. UCOL continues to have a strong connection with schools in the Horowhenua region, which has seen many secondary students complete UCOL’s in-school programmes over the years.

As the largest of UCOL’s four campuses, Manawatū produces graduates in a vast array of subjects, from Trades to Arts, Health and Sciences to Business. Throughout each faculty, there were many opportunities in 2020 for UCOL to connect with the Manawatū community. Five campus walls got a facelift as part of Street Prints Papaioea, Palmerston North’s first international street art festival. UCOL graduates were among the artists who painted giant murals around the city. 2020 also saw the first intake for the Bachelor of Social Services. This degree is designed to fill the skill gaps in social support and assistance that many local organisations and agencies face. Look out for the first graduates in 2023. UCOL launched its new Workhub website, which connects local businesses and organisations to students looking for work experience opportunities. It also acts as a visual story, showcasing our talented students. This will be a valuable resource for years to come – www.workhub.ucol.ac.nz. To connect students with employers, the campus also hosted its second annual Employment Expo. This included an “employment speed-dating” session for trades students, run in partnership with Central Skills Hub. COVID-19 made study extra challenging for students on all campuses, but the Student Success teams were here to give them the support they needed. The Manawatū team provided online appointments, delivered food parcels, and administered the Technology Access Fund for Learners, which supplied Chromebooks to students without computer access. The team also sewed over 90 face masks for students who use public transport.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Simon Barnett Simon Barnett is the founder and Team Leader of OBO, the world’s leading designer, manufacturer, and supplier of field hockey goalkeeper equipment. In 1975, at a young age, Simon established a company importing, manufacturing, and distributing table tennis equipment. In 1986, it moved into the importation of field hockey protective equipment and in 1990 began the design and manufacture of its own hockey gear. This range of equipment, designed specifically for the field hockey goalie, was launched under the OBO brand in 1994. Within four years, the company had become a world leader in this area. Based in Palmerston North, OBO produces a complete range of hockey protective equipment and holds a global market share in excess of 70 percent. The company’s products are sold in over 76 countries and cover the needs of children from the age of eight through to international-level adult players. At the Rio Olympics, 65 percent of all goal keepers used OBO gear. The company has won numerous awards including: Innovative Business of the Year, a Trade NZ Export Commendation, Exporter of The Year (1998 and 2005) in the Manawatū Business Awards, the New Zealand Design In Business Award (2005), the Massey University / Business Community Award (2007), the Manawatū Business Awards’ Lifetime Service Award (2018), and the 2020 Spirit of the Manawatū and Supreme Business Awards. Simon holds an honours degree in Marketing from Massey University.

UCOL 2021 Graduation

WHANGANUI GRADUATION CEREMONY 12.30pm • Thursday 1 April 2021 Whanganui War Memorial Centre, 2 Watt Street, Whanganui UCOL Whanganui takes great pride in producing high quality graduates in areas such as Nursing, Health, Business, Hospitality, Trades, and Creative Industries. Whanganui is a hub for creativity and innovation, with UCOL staff and students being great contributors to the local art scene. 2020 saw the School of Creative Industries once again hold a multi-site end-of-year exhibition, showcasing students work ranging from fashion to photography to sculpture. The Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) scheme, which runs across all UCOL’s campuses, produced some great success stories in Whanganui. The initiative provides Māori and Pacific students with fees-free study, academic and cultural support, and pastoral care. Among the Whanganui successes were two Automotive students who secured seven-year employment contracts with Whanganui Toyota. COVID-19 regulations meant that students on all campuses had to study at home for part of 2020, and the first year Bachelor of Design and Art students were great examples of the dedication and perseverance it took to succeed. Their exhibition Lockdown included large paintings that the students completed mostly in the first three weeks of the campus reopening. The Whanganui campus’ strong ties to the community are exemplified by the scholarships awarded to students each year. In 2020 UCOL Whanganui and its partners awarded 41 scholarships, worth a total of $45,000.This is the most scholarships the campus has ever given out in a single year. With COVID-19 putting increased financial pressure on many students, our local organisations stepping up and donating made a great difference in students’ lives.

UCOL 2021 Graduation

Bede McMenamin

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Graduation is the highlight of the academic calendar at UCOL. At a graduation ceremony we celebrate the hard work and successes of our graduates and give recognition to academics for their support of students during their learning journey. Similarly, we also take the opportunity to honour and recognise the people who have in one way or another supported our graduands, be it grandparents, parents, partners or friends. Planning for a graduation ceremony involves months of meetings and coordination and sees many different parts of UCOL coming together. From academic dress to printing of testaments, formalities and logistics to finally celebrating with our new Graduates. Much of this work is undertaken by UCOL staff members who also juggle another ‘day’ job. As Chair of the UCOL 2021 Graduation Ceremonies I want to acknowledge the support and assistance of fellow colleagues who have given their precious time to make it a memorable day for our graduands.

Dr Jerry Shearman Executive Director Education & Applied Research
