WHY JOIN DECA? An opportunity not to be missed!

Since 2010, UCL DECA together with the UCLU Business Society, have jointly hosted a one-day competition where students get an opportunity to explore and tackle real-life business scenarios and case studies. All participants are given constructive feedback on their individual performance as they are assessed by experienced professionals from the industry. They also have an opportunity to network with professionals, to gain industry insights and to meet with peers who share similar interests and aspirations. The experience I had with DECA was truly inspiring and one of a kind. The DECA Competition is unique in terms of the fast pace of the case studies, the engaging interaction with the judges, and the opportunity to build friendships and connections with industry experts. The day was very rewarding as I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses and learned to look at things from a fresh perspective. I spent one full day rotating from informative workshops to getting career guidance from the judges during the networking breaks. What I liked the most about the DECA experience was that I was taken out of my comfort zone and was challenged to think on my feet since the questions and solutions were not always straight forward. I would definitely recommend DECA to students of any discipline and level of study. Participating in DECA last year boosted my confidence and prepared me for potential employers. Feeling truly grateful for the opportunities that DECA created for me, I decided to step in and be part of the team that makes the DECA Competition an even better place to learn, grow, and be inspired for all UCL students. Thao Phun UCLU Business Society Competitions Director About my DECA experience: I decided to compete in DECA in 2013 in the business law and ethics category, because I wanted to brush up my commercial awareness and bulk up my CV. UCL DECA team was very well organized, with introductory presentations in the various categories of the competition during the run up to the event. The day itself was challenging, with industry professionals assessing us - I had people from Allen & Overy judge my presentation! I would really recommend DECA to people looking for a challenging yet a fantastic way of assessing and building up their knowledge of the commercial world and business.
