UCF Softball Complex Since its groundbreaking on March 14, 2006, the UCF Softball Complex is where the Knights call home. The state-of-the-art facillity speaks volumes for how far the program has come under the direction of head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie and where it is headed. The 600-capacity stadium is one of the finest in Conference USA and on the national scene. The field is professionally manicured by the UCF Facilites and Operations staﬀ and includes a covered batting pavilion, roomy dugouts, home and visitor bullpens and an outfield fence lined with palm trees.

UCF student-athletes have access to everything they need to prepare for gameday at the UCF Softball Complex. The Knights have a spacious locker room, a lounge area complete with a television, couches and chairs, an equipment room and their own training room complete with a top-notch athletic training staﬀ.

Along with having comfortable oﬃces for each coach, the UCF Softball Complex also has a conference room, a video room and locker rooms for both the coaching staﬀ and for umpires. The press box at the stadium has room enough for home and visitor radio broadcasts, as well as multi-level media seating. On game days, fans have access to a ticket booth, concession stand and gift shop, while also being able to participate in multiple promotions and events throughout the season.

Fun for the Entire Family Game days at the UCF Softball Complex provide fans with exciting plays on the field and a fun and family-friendly atmosphere while enjoying the game in the stands. Young athletes have the opportunity to meet the Knights and obtain autographs following contests throughout the season, while they can also sign up to be a bat girl in the dugout during the game and participate in team cheers and celebrations. With numerous promotions and contests put on at the stadium, there is something for fans of all ages to enjoy.

Birthday at the Ballpark

What better way to spend your birthday than with the UCF softball team? Young Knights have the opportunity to host their birthday party at the UCF Softball Complex for home games during the 2010 season, with food, drinks and a special birthday cake provided. Besides getting autographs from their favorite team members, the birthday boy/ girl will also get to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game.

Field of Dreams

The Knights want you to know what it feels like to run out onto the field at the UCF Softball Complex as the starting lineups are announced and the National Anthem plays. The UCF Softball Field of Dreams allows little league players 12 and under to do just that. Teams are recognized behind home plate prior to the game, before running onto the field with their favorite player at their own position.

Coaching Excellence Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie has blended her experience and success as a head coach with the youth and vigor of two accomplished assistant coaches, Stephanie Best and Nicole Trimboli, for the 2010 season. Since beginnig her coaching career in 1991, Gillispie has totaled 557 career-victories, including 510 at the Division I level. The skipper and the Knights have tallied a 305-210-1 overall record in nine years together. Gillispie has seen her players earn 31 all-conference honors, nine allregion accolades, three conference player of the year awards and six academic all-district distinctions. Now in her second year as an assistant coach at UCF, Stephanie Best not only brings top-level playing experience to the coaching staff, but she also has significant knowledge of how Gillispie and the Knights operate, having been part of the coaching staff, support staff or a member of the squad for the past nine years. In only her first year on the staff, Best helped a program-record five players garner All-Conference USA recognition in 2009. The newest addition to the Knights’ coaching staff, Nicole Trimboli, also brings professional credentials and high-level coaching experience to the program. In all, Trimboli has five years of both NPF and coaching experience. Prior to joining the UCF staff in 2010, the former Nebraska standout was an assistant coach at Portland State, where she helped lead the softball squad to the Pacific Coast Softball Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Winning Tradition Now in her ninth season with the Knights, head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie has built UCF into a consistently competitive program, not only in Conference USA, but also on the national level. Since starting the program at UCF in 2002, Gillispie’s squad has won 305 games, which includes a program-record 49 wins in 2008. During her time with the Knights, Gillispie has led her team to two conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2008 alone, the Black and Gold defeated teams ranked in the NFCA Top-25 on four diﬀerent occasions, which included a win over No. 1 Florida on the road.

UCF made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 after taking home the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship crown. The Knights made their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 by posting four-straight wins and defeating No. 9 ranked Houston in the Conference USA Championship in Houston, Texas.

During the 2008 season, the Black and Gold put together its most successful season to date, which was capped oﬀ by a victory over No. 1 Florida at Katie Seashole Pressley Stadium to advance to the NCAA Regional Championship Game for the first time in program history.

Top-Notch Opponents

Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie traditionally schedules the Knights to play a challenging non-conference schedule, complete with contests against the nation’s elite programs. In the past two seasons, UCF has played several impressive teams early in the season, including Florida, Arizona State, Florida State, Stanford and Tennessee. The Black and Gold also competes annually in premier tournaments to prepare for its challenging Conference USA slate. In past years the squad has participated in the Hawaii Paradise Classic, the Kajikawa Classic and has also hosted numerous events at the UCF Softball Complex. In 2010, the Knights will face-oﬀ with nine teams that ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 at the conclusion of 2009, while also taking on three teams that competed in the NCAA Women’s College World Series, six teams that played in a NCAA Super Regional and 15 teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament.

Knights in the Pros While building and developing the softball program at UCF over the last eight years, head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie has guided three former Knights to professional careers in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league. Stephanie Best became the first UCF athlete to be drafted by the NPF in 2005 following four electrifying seasons as part of the Knights’ program. UCF’s most decorated softball player successfully competed at the professional level for four years, winning the NPF Championship in 2007 with the Washington Glory.

Allison Kime, a two-time Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region First Team selection, inked a free-agent deal with the Rockford Thunder in 2008 after leading the Knights to their most successful season in program history. In 2009, Kime and the Thunder claimed the NPF Championship title. Following her senior year in 2009, first baseman Breanne Javier became the third Knight to make a NPF roster when she signed a free-agent deal with the USSSA Pride. In her rookie campaign, Javier earned herself a spot in the starting lineup and faced-oﬀ with Kime in the 2009 NPF Championship Game.

Conference USA UCF is a member of Conference USA, which is consistently rated among the top softball leagues in the nation. C-USA features 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. C-USA was originally formed in 1995 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Britton Banowsky serves as the league’s commissioner. • Nine Conference USA institutions sponsor softball (East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Southern Miss, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP). • In 10 seasons, Conference USA has sent 23 teams to the NCAA Tournament and three of those squads have advanced to play in the Women’s College World Series. • Since 2004, Conference USA has sent 15 teams to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by five selections in 2004 and four in 2008. • C-USA has had 22 athletes named to the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association first, second and third All-American teams in 10 seasons, led by Rachel Folden of Marshall’s three selections from 2006-08. Also, 12 athletes have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. • The NFCA and USA Softball have combined to recognize C-USA athletes for their respective National Player of the Week awards on 11 diﬀerent occasions. • Only five programs have won C-USA Softball Tournament titles since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2000. Former league member DePaul won four straight titles from 2002-05, while Southern Miss won the first two league titles in 2000 and 2001. Tulsa was champion in 2006 and 2009, while Houston won in 2007 and UCF claimed the title in 2008.

2010 Season Outlook The UCF softball team is setting its sights on another Conference USA Championship and a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, and has all the pieces of the puzzle to do just that. The squad welcomes back the majority of its starting lineup from a 2009 season that saw the Knights post a 27-27 overall record and earn a No. 5 seeding in the C-USA Championship with an 11-12 league clip, while also returning head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie for her ninth season at the helm of the Black and Gold. Joining Gillispie in the dugout will be secondyear assistant Stephanie Best and newly appointed assistant Nicole Trimboli, both of which have spent time playing professionally in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league and will be a tremendous help in preparing the team for one of its most competitive schedules on record. “I am thrilled to have two professional players on my staﬀ this year,” Gillispie said. “They are quality young ladies that have played at one of the highest levels possible in this game. They bring all of that knowledge and all of that excitement of the sport to our players and that will make us stronger as a team.”

In the Circle

The first step on the journey to the postseason is defeating top competition, and it all starts with pitching, a position in which the Knights have an immense amount of experience. In her fourth year as a starting pitcher for UCF, Ashleigh Cole (Pace, Fla.) looks to once again be a leader in the circle. The senior paced the Knights in every pitching category in 2009, posting a 17-8 record with a 2.42 ERA and 106 strikeouts.

Behind the Plate

The outfield will be patrolled by three veterans in 2010, as sophomore Vanessa Perez (San Diego, Calif.) and seniors Mary Helen Tyler (Marianna, Fla.) and Morgan Bullard (Columbia, S.C.) all return to their respective positions.

In the Dirt

A C-USA All-Freshman Team honoree, Perez led the Knights with 13 sacrifice hits, while adding 37 hits, five stolen bases and a .329 on-base percentage as the squad’s starting center fielder in 2009.

Also having an experienced leader to guide them is the Knights’ infield, as third baseman and three-year starter Hillary Barrow (Miami, Fla.) returns to the diamond for her senior season. Barrow, a 2007 C-USA All-Freshman Team and 2008 C-USA Championship All-Tournament Team selection, matched the UCF single-season record with 16 doubles in 2009.

Tyler returns to her starting spot in right field in her final season, while fellow veteran Bullard looks to hold down the left field job after suﬀering an injury in the first week of play last year.

“Hillary is definitely going to be our team leader in the infield,” Best said. “Her strength out there is her ability to keep everyone up and focused.”

“More than likely a newcomer will be filling the position at first base,” Best said. “Both Arielle and Marissa have the opportunity to see time there. I think the decision as to who will get the start is going to be a matter of whose bat is hot at the time.”

“We feel very confident with Vanessa in the outfield again this year,” Gillispie said. “She and Mary Helen were our anchors out there last year. And with Morgan healthy and strong this season, we are looking at her to patrol left field for us.” Three newcomers could also see time in the outfield this season, with junior Tawny Swan (Gilbert, Ariz.), Menendez and Schmitt all having experience in the grass. All the pieces are on the table for the Knights to make a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, and with a competitive schedule, veteran leaders and an experienced coaching staﬀ, the squad is looking for those pieces to fall into place.

Renee Luers-Gillispie is in her ninth year at the helm of the UCF softball program in 2010. Since starting the program in 2002, Gillispie has led the team to two conference championships and a pair of NCAA Regional Tournament appearances. The Knights and Gillispie have a record of 305-210-1 over the last eight years, while Gillispie owns a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) record of 557-414-3 and an NCAA record of 510-386-3. Following the 2009 season, Gillispie saw a school-record five players be named to All-Conference USA teams. Sophomore Tiﬀany Lane was honored with a spot on the first team, while Breanne Javier and Abby McClain garnered second-team honors. Natalie Land and Vanessa Perez rounded out the squad with spots on the allfreshman team. Javier also earned a spot on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Mideast Region First Team and signed a free-agent contract with the NPF's USSSA Pride. Gillispie guided her h squad to its most successful season on record in 2008, as the Knights claimed the program's first Conference USA Championship crown with a victory over No. 9 Houston on its home field, and fought its way to the NCAA Regional Championship Game with a win over No. 1 Florida. The team's 49 wins on the season were the most in program history, while its 26 votes in the final NFCA Coaches Poll were its most tallies to date. Gillispie also posted post her 500th career win in 2008.

Renee Luers-Gillispie L secured her 300th win as UCF’s head coach during the 2009 season. Allison Kime was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region First Team for the second-consecutive season in 2008, 2 while also securing a spot on the All-C-USA First Team for the second-straight year. Javier was also a repea repeat honoree for the Knights on the All-C-USA First Team, while McClain and Lane both made appearances on the all-freshman squad. Marquita Council garnered the league's co-newcomer of the year honor in her first seaso season with the Knights under Gillispie's guidance, and both Cat Snapp and Ashley Van Ryn were voted onto the league's All-Academic Team. Snapp also earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Second Se Team for her work on the field and in the classroom. The Black and Gold cruised through the C-USA Softball Championship with a 3-0 record, with Lane earning tournament MVP M honors for her play throughout the event. Kime, Javier, Council and Hillary Barrow joined Lane on the all-tournament al team, while the squad earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Five diﬀerent players earned postseason awards for UCF in 2007, including Kime, who received all-southeast region and C C-USA First Team honors as well as being named to the C-USA Championship All-Tournament Team. Javier jjoined Kime on the C-USA First Team and the C-USA Championship team, while Kacie Feaster claimed a spot spo on the C-USA First Team and the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III First Team. In the NCAA Tournament, the Knights picked up their first postseason win with a 5-3 victory over Florida on their home field. In the regular season, UCF U picked up wins over No. 8 Washington, No. 20 Florida International and No. 20 Georgia Tech on to the program's first win over in-state rival Florida State. Renee Luers-Gillispie

Best was the first UCF softball player to be drafted by the National Pro Fastpitch league when the New England Riptide took her in the fourth round. She ended her career with a .384 batting average, .756 slugging percentage, 71 home runs, 285 hits, 216 runs scored and 213 RBI. During the 2004 season, Gillispie guided the Knights to a No. 30 ranking in the NFCA Coaches Poll and the team finished the season with a 42-21 overall record. Gillispie earned her 100th win at UCF, while several players earned all-conference and all-region awards. Best was selected to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region Second Team, while Jania Shinhoster earned all-conference first team and A-Sun AllTournament Team honors. Amber Lamb was named A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Cici Alvarez earned ASun All-Conference First Team and All-Freshman Team honors. Jennifer Whitley was named to the A-Sun AllTournament Team. In the 2003 season, the Knights compiled a 37-31 overall record and a 13-7 mark in the A-Sun. Best was named A-Sun Player of the Year and was recognized by the NFCA on the all-south region team, while pitcher Dottie Cupp and Shinhoster received A-Sun All-Conference honors. During the inaugural season in 2002, the Black and Gold had a 46-19 record and posted a 21-game winning streak, setting an A-Sun record. Cupp and Shinhoster were named all-conference and all-region while Best earned all-conference. To date, Gillispie's players have earned 17 all-conference honors, nine all-freshman honors, three conference player of the year awards, one co-newcomer of the year award and one freshman of the year honor. Prior to UCF, Gillispie spent four years building the Texas Tech program. She led the Red Raiders to a No. 17 national ranking in 1998 and a No. 24 ranking the following season. Her teams earned runner-up honors at the 1999 NCAA Regional Championship, third place in the 1999 Big 12 Conference Tournament and fourth place in the 1998 conference tournament. In addition to her successful career at Texas Tech, Gillispie rebuilt softball programs at Bradley University and Joliet Junior College. In 1993, she took over the Bradley program that finished 12-25 in 1992 and in two short years posted a record-breaking 33-8 sea-

son. The 1994 team also finished in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference and was ranked fifth in the nation for winning percentage. Gillispie received N4C Conference Coach of the Year honors as head coach of the 1992 Joliet (Ill.) Junior College team that won the conference championship. She had inherited a 2-29 team in 1991 and transformed that same team into an NJCAA Regional Runner-up with a 32-12 record by 1992. In addition to coaching at the collegiate level, Gillispie has served as an international speaker for the Italian Softball and Baseball Federation Coaches Convention and also traveled to Athens, Greece as a guest coach for the Greek National Team in 2001. While she directs her own softball camps and clinics, she has also worked as an instructor with the Griﬀey International Gold Medal Camp and Higher Ground Camps and Clinics under British National coach Bobby Simpson. Gillispie began her playing career as a pitcher at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she pitched in two NJCAA National Championship Tournaments. In 1981, she was ranked ninth nationally as a NJCAA pitcher. Moving on to West Texas State (now known as West Texas A&M), she set nine career pitching records including most wins, most strikeouts and most saves. In 2005, Gillispie was inducted into the West Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame. Gillispie and her husband, Mark, have been married for 27 years and reside in Oviedo.

Stephanie Best enters her second season as the Knights’ assistant coach in 2009. Best works specifically as the Knights’ hitting coach and works closely with the infielders. Prior to being named an assistant in 2008, Best spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the Knights, providing hitting instruction and aiding in day-to-day practice operations. Along with being familiar with the program and the student-athletes, Best also brings a wealth of top-level playing experience to the coaching staﬀ. Since becoming the first UCF athlete to be drafted by the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league in 2005 by the New England Riptide, Best has competed at the professional level for four years, while also serving as a mentor to inner-city youth and running camps and clinics to teach youth the skills associated with the game of softball.

Stephanie Best led the NCAA with 26 home runs in 2005, Best was one of the first members of the UCF softball team, joining the squad in its inaugural season in 2002. Best still holds records for career batting average (.384), runs scored (216), RBI (213), hits (285), home runs (71), slugging percentage (.756), total bases (562), on-base percentage (.487), walks (147), intentional walks (7 (28), assists (558) and games played (272). (2 Th slugger also holds numerous season and game records, which includes her record of 11 RBI vs. Army on The M March 19, 2003, where Best tied the NCAA record for RBI in a game and was named the NFCA/Louisville Slugge ger National Player of the Week after hitting three home runs, including two grand slams in the same inning. Her 71 career home runs still rank in the NCAA Division I Top 10, while her 26 round-trippers in 2005 led th the nation. Nicole Trimboli joined the UCF softball coaching staff in October 2009 as an assistant coach. Trimboli works specifically with the Knights’ outfielders and is in charge of recruiting. Trimboli came to UCF after serving as the assistant coach at Portland State during the 2008-09 season. While with the Vikings, Trimboli helped lead the softball squad to the Pacific Coast Softball Conference title, matching its best league-mark with a 15-5 record, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to joining the staff at PSU, Trimboli spent two seasons as the assistant coach at Division II Colorado School of Mines, where she helped the team post a 38-19 record and a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship in 2008. At the conclusion of the team’s most successful season on record, Trimboli and the rest of the CSM staff was recognized as the RMAC Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2006, Trimb Trimboli served as an assistant coach at the University of Maine, after embarking on her first year in the coaching realms realm in 2005 as the volunteer assistant at her alma mater, Nebraska.

Nicole Trimboli was named the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Nico Championship MVP in 2008. A four-year letterwinner with the Cornhuskers, Trimboli was a three-time All-Big 12 honoree and garnered All-Midwe All-Midwest Region accolades on two diﬀerent occasions. In 2002, she helped lead her team to the Women’s College World Wo Series, while her squad also earned Big 12 titles in both 2001 and 2004. Following her successful collegiate career at Nebraska, Trimboli ranked in the program’s top 10 in 10 diﬀereent categories and was named to the Big 12 10th Anniversary Team in 2006. The outfielder continued her playing career in the professional ranks after being drafted by the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league in 2004. Trimboli was named a NPF AllStar as a rookie, ro before helping her team to the NPF Championship in 2005. Trimboli played her final three seasons in the th league with the Chicago Bandits, where she garnered a spot on the NPF All-Star team and led her squad to the NPF Championship title both for the second time in her career in 2008. For her play during the Championship Champio series that season, Trimboli was named the NPF Championship MVP. A native o of Colorado Springs, Colo., Trimboli earned a bachelor’s degree in education and family sciences from Neb Nebraska.

Chas Ossenheimer is in his first year as a member of the UCF strength and conditioning staﬀ at UCF. He is the head strength and conditioning coach for the softball team and assists with several other UCF athletic teams. Ossenheimer is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He also holds a certification as a sports performance coach from USA Weightlifting as well as certifications in CPR, first aid and AED. Ossenheimer earned a bachelor’s degree in sports and fitness with a focus in strength and conditioning from UCF. He is currently working on his master’s degree in exercise physiology.

Eric Coleman Academic Advisor Second Season Minnesota-Morris (2001)

Eric joined the Academic Services for Student Athletes staﬀ in January 2009. He is currently the lead advisor for softball, women’s track & field and cross country, while also overseeing all aspects of ASSA Tutoring Services. Prior to joining the ASSA staﬀ, Coleman spent one year at The University of Akron as the Coordinator of CHAMPS/Life Skills and Tutoring Services. He has also served as Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment at Gustavus Adolphus College, Director of the Intercultural Student Center and Resident Director/Advisor for the McNair Scholars Program at Minnesota State. A native central Floridian, Coleman is a 1997 graduate of Apopka High School. In 2001 he earned his B.A. in human services with a minor in psychology from the University of Minnesota-Morris and in 2004 his M.A. in sports management from Minnesota State. While at Morris, Coleman was co-captain for the Cougar football team and was named a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Academic All-American and was the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athlete award.

Sonya Montoya is in her second year as the head athletic trainer for the softball squad in 2010. Prior to her appointment at UCF, Montoya served one year as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Maryland. While working with the Terrapins, Montoya was the head athletic trainer for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams and the women’s water polo team, while also overseeing the daily coverage of the men’s lacrosse team in the fall. Montoya also served as an intern at Maryland after graduating from Longwood University with a bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology with a concentration in athletic training in 2007. As an undergraduate athletic trainer, Montoya served as the athletic training student for Longwood’s men’s basketball and field hockey teams, while also working at HampdenSydney College with its football squad and at Prince Edward County Schools with eight diﬀerent sports. Montoya is currently pursuing her master’s degree in sports and fitness.

A former UCF softball player, Amber Lamb rejoined the program in 2009 as director of softball operations. In her position, Lamb is in charge of overseeing the Knights’ recruiting database, as well as organizing game day operations and serving as the softball oﬃce manager. A native of West Palm Beach, Fla., Lamb ranks second on UCF’s career record chart in sacrifice flies (7) and in doubles (40). The former shortstop also ranks third in total bases (275) and sixth in assists (248).

2009 Season Review AMONG THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE The UCF softball team set a program-record in 2009 when five members of the squad were selected to All-Conference USA teams. Tiﬀany Lane garnered AllC-USA First Team honors, marking the third-straight season the Knights have had at least one player on the team. Breanne Javier and Abby McClain both grabbed spots on the All-C-USA Second Team, while Natalie Land and Vanessa Perez were selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.

CONTINUING HER REIGN ON TOP Sophomore Tiﬀany Lane shared the national lead for triples in 2009 to be named a NCAA Division I Statistical Champion. The speedy shortstop had eight triples on the season, a mark that matched Southern University’s Audrey Phillips and Monmouth’s Emily deLong for the top spot nationally. Lane also bested her single-season record from 2008 with her eighth threebagger of 2009, while also taking sole possession of the No. 3 spot on the C-USA all-time register with 15 career triples.

C-USA ACADEMIC HONORS Abby McClain continued to receive postseason honors when she earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Academic Team. In order to claim a spot on the 12-member team, student-athletes must have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average or better and been a starter or key reserve for their team. 300 WINS FOR KNIGHTS, GILLISPIE With its nightcap win over Houston on April 19, the UCF softball team and head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie earned their 300th win in their eighth year as a program at the Division I level. The Knights and Gillispie then extended their all-time record to 305-210-1 to conclude the season. C-USA HITTER OF THE WEEK After putting together a remarkable performance at the plate against UTEP in the Knights’ final regularseason series of the year, sophomore Tiﬀany Lane was tabbed Conference USA’s Hitter of the Week on May 4. The weekly honor was Lane’s first in 2009 and the second of her career. Lane recorded a .727 batting average (8-for-11), with five RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases. The sophomore tallied a .818 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base percentage during the series, while accounting for seven of UCF’s 11 total runs on the weekend. OUT OF POSITION Freshman Natalie Land made 12 starts at shortstop for UCF in 2009 in place of an injured Tiﬀany Lane. When Land received the starting nod at shortstop during the season, the Black and Gold notched a 9-3 record.

2009 Season Review

NEW RECORD With eight three-hit games under her belt during her sophomore season, Abby McClain surpassed Stephanie Best for the program record for three-hit games in a season. McClain set the record with a two-out, twoRBI, walk-oﬀ double in the eighth inning to give the Knights the league-series win against Southern Miss on April 5. Best, who previously held the record, had seven three-hit games as a sophomore in 2003. LAY IT DOWN Junior Ashleigh Cole put her name at the top of the record books on April 5, after laying down three sacrifice bunts in the series finale against the Golden Eagles. The trio of sacrifice hits matched Cici Alvarez’s recordsetting mark for sacs in a game set on Feb. 24, 2007, against George Mason. FINISHING IN THIRD With 57 hits on the season in 2009, senior Breanne Javier staked claim on the No. 3 spot on the UCF alltime record chart with 245 career hits. The mark trails only Jania Shinhoster’s total of 268 hits from 2002-05 and Stephanie Best’s record-holding 285 hits during the same four seasons. 500...AGAIN In 2008, head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie reached 500 wins in her career as a head coach with a win over league-foe, UAB. With the Knights’ win over Southern Miss on April 10, the skipper once again reached the milestone of 500. Gillispie recorded her 500th win at the Division I level in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader and now holds a 510-385-3 record at college’s top-level.

C USA PITCHER OF THE WEEK After posting a 3-0 record with one save, junior Ashleigh Cole was named Conference USA’s Pitcher of the Week on March 2. The junior allowed only five earned runs in 26.1 innings pitched for a 1.33 ERA to help the UCF softball team to a 6-1 record. The weekly honor was the first for Cole in 2009 and the first of her career. IN THE NO. 9 SPOT When batting in the ninth spot in the Knights’ batting order last season, freshman Natalie Land led the team with a .378 batting average. In 18 games started in the final spot in the order, Land also tallied 19 hits, nine runs, four doubles and a home run. UCF was also 10-8 when Land batted ninth. NEW SURROUNDINGS In the final game of the Knights’ series at Memphis, sophomore Tiﬀany Lane got a diﬀerent view of the field. UCF’s usual starting shortstop, Lane started the contest as the left fielder. Having missed two games earlier in the week because of an injury, Lane started the second game as the DP, before roaming the outfield for the first time in her collegiate career in the nightcap. UNTOUCHABLE AFTER SIX If the Black and Gold had a lead heading into the seventh inning of a contest, its opponent was out of luck in coming back to win. The Knights were 22-0 this season when leading its opponent after six innings. UCF’s defense allowed only 13 runs to its opponents in the seventh inning, while scoring 34 runs in the sixth frame, its most for any inning.

UCFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1,415-acre campus provides a safe, serene setting for learning with 600 acres of natural lakes and woodlands. At UCF, there is always something to do. Students attend Division I athletics events, concerts and shows at UCF Arena and are oďŹ&#x20AC;ered a wide array of cultural events and opportunities. Personal development programs and activities in a broad range of educational, recreational and social-awareness topics allow students a chance to expand their understanding of the world. Among the things available to all students are an 85,000-square foot recreational fitness center, a 181,000-gallon outdoor recreational pool and nine sandy beach volleyball courts. UCFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exciting campus includes a variety of on-campus residential communities, and the addition of new housing, a new alumni center and a full-service medical clinic provides expanded opportunities for activities.

Dr. John C. Hitt President

Dr. John C. Hitt became the fourth president of the University of Central Florida on March 1, 1992, after 19 years of administrative experience and a distinguished academic career. A native of Houston, Texas, he graduated cum laude in 1962 from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He completed his master’s degree in 1964 and his Ph.D. degree two years later, both in physiological psychology at Tulane. Hitt served as an assistant professor of psychology at Tulane before moving to TCU as an associate professor of psychology in 1969. Three years later, he became associate dean of the university. In 1974, he was appointed vice president of the TCU Research Foundation and was named dean of the graduate school in 1975. In 1977, Hitt left TCU to become provost and vice president for academic aﬀairs and professor of psychology at Bradley in Peoria, Illinois. In 1987, he moved to Maine as vice president for academic aﬀairs and professor of psychology. In 1991, Hitt was named Maine’s interim president. Early in his tenure at the school, President Hitt outlined the following five major goals for UCF: • • • • •

oﬀer the best undergraduate education in Florida achieve international prominence in key programs of graduate study and research provide an international focus to the curricula and research programs become more inclusive and diverse become America’s leading partnership university

Under Hitt ’s leadership, enrollment at UCF has more than doubled, the number of doctoral degrees awarded each year has increased sevenfold, and research funding has increased from $6.2 million to $121 million a year. Hitt has conferred more than 130,000 degrees during his presidency. One of Hitt ’s greatest achievements occurred when the Florida Board of Governors approved the UCF College of Medicine, and the Lake Nona Medical City was founded. Hitt ’s current civic service includes membership on the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission Fundraising Campaign leadership cabinet and the MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando’s Council of Governors. He serves on the boards of the American Heart Association, Central Florida Partnership, the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, SunTrust N.A., and United Arts. He is also a member, vice-chair, and chair-elect of the Conference USA Board of Directors. In recent years, the Central Florida community has honored Hitt with a number of prestigious awards. He was the recipient of the 2008 Junior Achievement Spirit of Achievement Award. He received the Seminole Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement award in 2007. In 2006, he received the Orlando Business Journal’s first Legacy Award and in 2005 he was named the Orlando Sentinel’s Central Floridian of the Year. Hitt is an avid fisherman and golfer. He has been married to the former Martha Halsted for 47 years, and they have two children and two grandchildren.

Director of Athletics The thread that has bridged together nearly three decades working in and around the collegiate community has been Keith Tribble’s history of building programs with strong foundations and dynamic structure. Since his start as Director of Athletics and Executive Vice President for the University of Central Florida Athletics Association on June 6, 2006, Tribble has quickly taken hold of the program’s blueprints and promised to lead with a principle that everyone associated with the program will also share - to “finish.” Most importantly, Tribble is committed to the concept of the well-rounded student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of their academic prowess oﬀ the field as well as championship results on. In addition, the other focal point of his concentration is the oversight of the construction, expansion and completion of the noted UCF Athletics Facilities Master Plan. When finished, the plan will touch all areas of the student-athletes’ well-being, including residential housing, academic and mentoring support facilities and state-of-the-art performance venues where UCF fans and supporters can cheer on the Knights. To date, Tribble has overseen $150 million in new construction and improvements to UCF athletic facilities since his arrival. Through a renewed commitment, Tribble has been most proud of the record academic achievement of the UCF student-athletes during his first two years in Orlando. The Knights, for the thrid-straight year in 2008-09, placed the highest number of student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with 224 representatives maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or better. Much of UCF Athletics went from transitioning into Conference USA to competing for its titles in just a few short years. The football program has played for two C-USA titles since 2005, winning the championship and coveted AutoZone Liberty Bowl berth in 2007. In 2007-08, other programs such as women’s soccer and softball, and members of women’s track and field, claimed C-USA titles. In 2008-09, men’s golf reigned over the league, in addition to a big Conference USA Tournament championship from women’s basketball. Over half of the programs have competed in NCAA postseason tournaments the past two years. Successful student-athletes start with top-notch coaching and at UCF the commitment to coaching excellence has been evident. Among Tribble’s transactions so far has been the renewal of several successful veteran coaches, including Amanda Cromwell (women’s soccer), Renee LuersGillispie (softball), George O’Leary (football) and Kirk Speraw (men’s basketball). Additionally, Tribble was instrumental in the hiring of several new head coaches, including Bryan Cunningham (men’s soccer), Todd Dagenais (women’s volleyball), Becky Cramer (women’s rowing), Stephanie Nickitas (women’s tennis), Terry Rooney (baseball), Bryce Wallor (men’s golf), Courtney Trimble (women’s golf), Caryl Smith-Gilbert (women’s track and field/cross country) and Joi Williams (women’s basketball). Tribble attended the University of Florida where he played oﬀensive guard for three bowl teams. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (public relations and marketing). Tribble and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Carlyn, and a son, Kyle.

Excellence Off the Field

In addition to excelling on the field, student-athletes at UCF also enjoy great success in the classroom and in the community. The Knights are supported by a nine-person professional staﬀ of advisors and program coordinators from the Oﬃce of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA). The ASSA mission is to support student-athletes’ academic development while exceeding satisfactory progress toward their degrees. ASSA advisors coordinate tutoring, mentoring, study sessions, and priority class registration for all current student-athletes and assist new Knights through the recruitment process. UCF student-athletes receive specific academic and athletic information at orientation as well as study skills and time management instruction through out the year. More than 50 computers are available for student-athlete's use anytime during the academic year. During the 2008-09 academic year, UCF set a Conference USA academic record after placing 224 student-athletes on the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. UCF had the most student-athletes earn spots on the honor roll for the third-straight year. Student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better to earn a spot on the honor roll. In addition, 34 Knights earned the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. The medals are awarded to student-athletes who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better. Along with working hard in the classroom, the Knights are also active in the community, donating their time to worthy causes throughout central Florida. In recent years, members of the softball team have helped disabled children play baseball as part of the Miracle League and volunteered their time at the Jenny Finch Softball Camp, as well as the Knights Give Back project where they spent time preparing Camp Thunderbird in Apopka to make it safe for the arrival of over 130 disabled children.

Towers at Knights Plaza

Numerous UCF student-athletes reside on campus at the Towers at Knights Plaza, modern apartment-style dormitories on the north side of campus which allow student-athletes to live within close proximity to UCFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletics facilities. The apartments feature common kitchen and living room areas as well as four single bedrooms with full-size beds. Each bedroom includes high-speed Internet access, cable television and local phone service. The Towers at Knights Plaza feature 100,000-square feet of retail shops and restaurants. Tenants include Barnes & Noble bookstore, Subway and Knightroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cafeteria, where UCF student-athletes dine. The apartments are located near the majority of the athletics facilities, including Bright House Networks Stadium, UCF Arena, The Venue at UCF, Jay Bergman Field, the UCF Softball Complex and the UCF Track and Field and Soccer Complex. The Towers at Knights Plaza are also in close proximity to the Wayne Densch Sports Center and Nicholson Fieldhouse.

Athletics Facilities From Bright House Networks Stadium to the UCF Arena, UCF student-athletes play and train in top-notch venues. The school’s always growing and improving athletics complex is part of UCF’s commitment to provide student-athletes with exceptional and modern facilities. In the past few years, this commitment has assured that the UCF athletics facilities are not only among the best in Conference USA, but across the nation.

The 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium, the home of the UCF program, shared its debut season on campus in 2007 with another brand new facility - UCF Arena. Home to the Knights’ men’s and women’s basketball programs, the 10,000-seat venue also opened in the fall of 2007. The arena, which also hosts concerts and UCF commencement ceremonies, includes luxury boxes and suites, open concourse areas and numerous concession options. Other facilities that have seen upgrades in recent years are Jay Bergman Field – home to the baseball program - and The Venue at UCF, the renovated previous arena which now houses exclusive modern practice facilities and oﬃces for the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as an equally-spacious home facility for volleyball. Oﬀ campus, two new facilities opened in 2009 the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center and the UCF Golf Practice Facility.

UCF’s Facilities Master Plan includes numerous facility enhancements in the coming years, including the planned construction of a new stadium and entrance structure at the UCF Soccer and Track and the expansion of Jay Bergman Field. The vision for a new academic services center is imminent, one which will provide student-athletes greater access to resources near their new Athletics Village residences, and further assist their progress towards their degrees and post-graduate success. When UCF Athletics completes its Facilities Master Plan during the next decade, every sport and every student-athlete will have received the benefit of an improved facility to practice, train and compete for championships in.

Strength & Conditioning/ Sports Medicine

The strength and conditioning program is an integral component of UCF’s 16-sport athletic family. The most visible sign of the Knights’ commitment in this area is an 11,200-square foot weight room located in the middle of the Wayne Densch Sports Center. The state-of-the-art facility contains the finest free weight and machine equipment, cardio equipment and treadmills. UCF also houses a weight room in The Venue, which is utilized by the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. Five certified strength and conditioning coaches monitor the progress of UCF’s student-athletes.

The UCF sports medicine facilities are fully equipped with the most up to date technology, including a SwimEx aquatic therapy pool, used to aid in advanced rehabilitation of the elite student-athlete. The main athletic training room is located in the Wayne Densch Sports Center with additional locations at The Venue, Jay Bergman Field, the UCF Softball Complex and the brand-new UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center. The sports medicine staﬀ consists of six full-time athletic trainers, seven graduate assistant athletic trainers and approximately 60 undergraduate athletic training students.

UCF students have easy access to one of the world’s most vibrant cities – Orlando. Looking for theme parks, attractions, museums, world-class shopping, great restaurants, golf courses, jogging trails and nature preserves? You can find it all here in Orlando. Orlando is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. In 2007, 48.8 million visitors traveled to the region. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando and Sea World are just a short drive away from the UCF campus. The Kennedy Space Center, state parks and sandy beaches oﬀ the coast of the Atlantic Ocean are also all nearby. Orlando is a frequent destination for today’s top national musical acts, who visit popular venues like Hard Rock Live at Universal’s CityWalk and House of Blues, which is located at Downtown Disney. The city’s world-renowned theme parks have added a variety of new entertainment experiences, including Disney’s Cirque de Soleil and Universal’s Blue Man Group performances. Beyond the theme parks, downtown Orlando features an ever-changing skyline, fine dining options and a newly developed arts district. Cultural destinations in the city include the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orange County Regional History Center and Lake Eola Park.

Orlando Sporting Options

With top-notch events occurring year round, Orlando is a premier destination for sports fans. The region is home to professional franchises, college football bowl games, world-famous auto races, several professional golf tournaments and much more. The Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association brought excitement to the city last season with a tremendous run to the NBA Finals. The Magic open play in 2009-10 season in a brand-new, state-of-the-art downtown Orlando arena. The region’s sports calendar is busy with baseball each spring as Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex hosts the Atlanta Braves for Major League Baseball spring training. The Houston Astros train in nearby Kissimmee and the Washington Nationals prepare for the regular season close to UCF in Viera. Each summer, the Tampa Bay Bucs train for the upcoming National Football League campaign at Disney’s sports complex. The Florida Citrus Bowl, the former home of UCF football, hosts a pair of college bowl games each winter and has also been the site of World Cup and Olympic soccer contests. In 2006, the World Baseball Classic held part of its inaugural event in Orlando. In addition to UCF athletics events, the region also features most prominent NASCAR race, the Daytona 500. Several other NASCAR races, PGA Tour golf tournaments and numerous action sports championships are also held in Central Florida.
