President’s Welcome As current President of UCD Ladies Hockey club, I am delighted to be involved in what will hopefully be the first of several Ezine newsletters for our illustrious club. This follows from our first ever Alumni dinner, held in November 2012, which was extremely successful and allowed for a great 'catch up' with fellow players, many of whom were re-connecting after a very long time. In order to build from this we were fortunate to have two students assigned with the specific purpose to help extend the Alumni lists for both the Men and the Ladies sections. This has resulted in the gathering of over 600 names for the Ladies Alumni. Nonetheless, I am aware that there are many past players who have 'slipped through the net' and I am appealing to you that if you know of any who may have to please forward contact details. (ucdhockeyalumni@gmail.com) I am writing to you here during an extremely exciting time in the history of UCD hockey club which has become not just one of the most successful clubs in the University or even Leinster but in Ireland. At present there are 12 UCD players on the Irish squad. The results of the First team speaks volumes ...winners last year, 2013, of the Leinster League and the Irish Senior Cup in 2012, they then went onto win the Gold medal in the European Championships in Sicily. What about that for a 'hat trick' ? In addition, the Second's squad won the L.H.A Trophy and were runners up in their League, securing promotion. Another squad, the Fifths, were cup winners. Beyond these wonderful achievements there has also been huge progress and success at every level in the club over the last number of years and this season shows equal promise as teams are all very well positioned. However, as we all know it is not all about winning alone, it is also about participating, so I am calling on you to please come to Belfield and participate by lending your support! I think it is important that the ties that bound us together during our playing days should continue. To this end, the Ladies club has a programme of events planned for the balance of the season and together we would warmly welcome all Alumni to reconnect and recapture some of the fun and 'craic' we experienced, regardless of the level we competed at during our playing days in UCD. I look forward to seeing you soon. Elaine Anthony. Club President

Club Captain Welcome to our first UCD Ladies Hockey Club Newsletter. I hope that you will find the content interesting and entertaining. Our aim is to bring you up to date with the clubs progress and the events that will happen in the coming months which might be of interest to you. The club is at an exciting stage in the season. We have 7 teams competing in the Leinster leagues with the 1st and 3rd teams currently topping their tables. Our 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th teams are all in second place and our 4th team in 6th place. As a result we are heading into an exciting couple of months/weeks with some very important matches such as the Irish Senior Cup against Old Alex Hockey Club on the 1/2/2014 and the IHL throughout March. This year is the first year we have had a Hockey Administrator, Justin Sherriff. We are delighted to have his services. He is assisting the Ladies and Mens section with all ‘Hockey issues’ and I wish Justin every success in his role. Club Squads ~ 1st The 1sts Squad is currently in first position in Division 1 with 34 points and competing well for league honours and in the quarter final round of the Irish Senior Cup. The IHL tournament will be played this year during March and will be a busy and exciting time for the 1st squad/club. This trophy has escaped UCD’s grasp over the last few years, but it is one of the primary goals for the 1st squad this season. Current Leinster Division Champions, European Champions and UCD Ladies are the holders of the Chilean Trophy for the 4th season in a row. This squad has currently 12 Ireland international players which without doubt is unprecedented in UCD Ladies Hockey and in the university’s history. The 1st squad is coached by Johnny Harte and Richard Rellis and this is their fourth season with UCD Ladies Hockey Club, and they also coach in Wesley College and bring a wealth of coaching experience. The 1sts Squad is sponsored by the Bank of Ireland and we thank them for their continued support. Hockey Sticks Happenings College hockey has commenced with a surge, 100+ new players who signed up at SportsExpo for UCD Ladies Hockey. It is fantastic to have such an increase in players. Hockey trials were challenging to say the least with that volume of players arriving in college but we have done our best to accommodate all players in the 7 squads along with social hockey. So far, all college teams have been competing very well across all divisions and the season has great potential for honours but still a long way to go. There have been the usual injuries across most squads with broken fingers, thumbs, cuts, stitches, bruises and a few players getting lost leaving the environs of D4, never mind the far reaches of the Pale. Yes, Tullamore is in Leinster, Ladies, and as as is North Kildare, we know it’s not on a motorway but places do exist that are not on motorways. . .

Hockey Sticks News The UCD bar has recently re-opened as The Clubhouse and offers the facilities for socialising with other teams after matches and training. Recently we used the fine facilities after the ISC Ards match and the feedback was very positive in terms of the food, and the premises. The Clubhouse has an upstairs function room which is available for events with full bar and food facilities and would be an ideal location for the Alumni Ball / Awards Night which is being planned at present. More information to follow on the Alumni Ball / Awards Night. We are planning on using The Clubhouse after the Irish Senior Cup versus Old Alex on the 1/2/2014 and after the rounds of IHL home matches in March, (dates opposite the President’s Welcome on the inside front cover). Please come and support your team in UCD on those dates.

Hockey Sticks News Moving on, the Freshers Hockey Night was a success and held “off campus” for purely ‘localisation’ reasons within the Mount Merrion area. The establishment in question is still standing, we understand, and believe it or not we have been invited back ... a first! All freshers have been accounted for since and were duly welcomed to college hockey in the appropriate manner with a full tour of Coppers Face Jack’s, purely for familiarisation purposes and improvement of social skills, plus locating late night kebab joints and ‘lockins’, all in the interest of hockey of course. This year’s Club Captain is Alice Hearnden, who has been in the club for 3 years and is an experienced hockey player. We wish Alice and the committee all the best for the rest of the season. There is a challenging second half of the season ahead for the club with 7 teams competing each week, plus cup competitions.

Hockey Sticks News Great Honour for UCD Hockey Club Member Leah Ewart, 1st Squad member, currently studying Biomedical, Health & Life Sciences, has been chosen by the Olympic Council of Ireland as Team Ireland’s Young Ambassador for the Nanjing 2014 World Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The role of the Youth Ambassador (YA) is to encourage young athletes to actively participate in a number of learning experiences that take place in parallel to the competition programme. In the true spirit of the YOG mission, they want to engage with young athletes and other young participants and inspire them to play an active role in their communities. Leah captained the Irish hockey team in the first YOG in Singapore finishing 5th overall. The Games experience was hugely inspirational and she has since gone on to represent Ireland at senior international level. Ewart said “After having had the privilege of participating in the first ever Youth Olympic Games myself, I’m delighted to have been chosen as an ambassador to encourage other young athletes to enjoy and be motivated by this unique and unforgettable experience. To be part of an event like this is every young athlete’s dream and I want to share with others how taking part in these games can inspire you to train harder and aim for your own sporting goals, as it did for me. I want to make sure the athletes involved in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing realize not only the sporting opportunities of competing against other top athletes but also the educational and cultural experiences that will be available to them. I hope that as an ambassador with previous experience of the games that I can be a source of advice, encouragement and support to Team Ireland athletes so that they too can appreciate and get involved in every aspect of the Youth Olympic Games whether it be sporting or non-sporting, and having experiences that they will keep with them for the rest of their lives.” We wish Leah every success in the role and no doubt she will do UCD proud.

I n t e r Va r s i t i e The Halloween bank holiday brings a major event in the University hockey calendar as the annual Inter-Varsity tournament takes place. This year Trinity and RCSI were the hosts of this great tournament which includes all the major universities in the country as well as some of the ITs in the recent years. The tournament took place in Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club. Twenty-four teams competed in four separate men’s and ladies competitions – The Mauritius Cup and Plate and the Chilean Cup and Plate. This year the tournament was restructured so that both men’s and women’s competitions had ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions, to create more competitive matches and prevent the wide divide of standard which had been seen in previous years. UCD ladies were hoping to make it four in a row this year following a very successful year in the 2012/2013 season. The girls retained their Leinster League title, were runners up in the Irish senior cup and became European Champions in Sicily in May earning promotion for next year’s Irish representative. They went in favourites into this year’s Inter-varsities having remained un-defeated for the last 3 years in the tournament. UCD faced a tough group though, comprised of University of Ulster (UU) and University College Cork (UCC). Coach Johnny Harte brought a strong, experienced 18 man squad to the tournament with 8 freshers taking part in their first taste of Intervarsity Hockey. They were quickly brought up to speed with the runnings of the tournament and took everything that was asked of them in their stride.

s - 4 in a row The opening game of the tournament saw UCD face a strong UU side including Irish internationals Chloe Brown and Vanessa Surgeoner. It was an exciting game with both sides creating a lot of chances. UU put in a very strong performance and ended up deserved winners of the game 4-3. This was a surprise victory for UU and was UCD’s first defeat of the 2013 season as well as their first defeat in this competition for 3 years. UCD needed to regroup and held their very own Freshers Tournament, which took place over the weekend which helped to regain their sense of competition. The way in which the young UCD players stepped up to the plate was impressive. This confidence allowed allowed the ‘slightly’ older (well mostly ‘slightly’ older) girls to take the lead in learning from the defeat to UU and build on improving performances. The following day, UCD needed a win to progress to the semi-finals against rivals UCC whom they had defeated in last year’s final 2-0. It was a scrappy game but UCD came out 3-1 winners to earn a semi-final later in the day against Queens University Belfast. This was a tough game full of drama. There was an issue with the rules during the game causing one player to even scale the fence and leave the field. In spite of this UCD held out for a 3-1 victory. This set up a final against UU with UCD now looking for revenge on their opening day defeat.

This win made it 4 in a row for UCD ladies and also the 2nd double in 3 years as UCD men were also crowned victors. It was an exciting, fun and drama filled Inter-Varsity tournament and Here’s to 5 in a row next year!

Photo: Deryck Vincent

The final did not disappoint and was an exciting contest between two strong sides. UCD were without their captain Sarah Greene for Flannery - determined disciplinary issues but still had 16 strong and determined players. Both teams benefitted from a wealth of senior international experience but it was UCD who ran out 3-1 winners. Aisling Naughton got the first goal with Anna O’Flanagan making it 2-0 to UCD at half-time. Emily Beatty got the third before Vanessa Surgeonor scored what was a consolation goal for UU.
