Sean Kelley kicked a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and the Aggie defense made it stand up down the stretch, as the UC Davis football team claimed the 57th annual Causeway Classic with a rain-soaked 17-16 win over rival Sacramento State at Aggie Stadium. UC Davis finished the season with a three-game winning streak, posting a 6-5 record for it second consecutive winning season and its 39th in the past 40. Receiver Anthony Soto caught a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Randy Wright to help highlight the offensive effort while defensive end Bobby Erskine had a game-high 11 tackles. The Hornets, who led 13-0 in the first quarter after a pair of short touchdown passes from Jeff Fleming, also finished 6-5. Fleming lobbed a one-yard score to Matt Carter before connecting with Chase Deadder from four yards. Hard rain and strong wind perservered throughout the game with lightning in the area forcing a 47-minute delay after the teams had retreated to the locker rooms for halftime. The game was resumed at approximately 6:30 p.m. Inclement weather affected play on the field throughout the game. Sacramento State had four turnovers while UC Davis had one. Teams stuck to the ground for most of the second half with UC Davis getting its big break midway through the fourth quarter when Kyle Monson muffed a punt from Colton Schmidt at the Hornets’ 10. Sacramento State held the Aggies out of the end zone but Kelley was good from 21 yards, making it 17-16 with 6:34 to play. Sacramento State got the ball back one final time with 2:15 left at their own 42 with backup quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson - replacing injured Jeff Fleming - hitting Ron Richardson on fourth-and-9 to keep the drive alive inside of UC Davis territory. A big sack from defensive end Eric Sobotka later pushed the Hornets back to the Aggies’ 37 before Bethel-Thompson was intercepted by Jonathan Perkins at the 11 on fourth down with just 21 seconds remaining. The Hornets scored on their first two drives, taking the opening kickoff and marching 80 yards on 11 plays, capping the drive when Fleming lobbed a one-yard pass to a wide-open Carter in the back of the end zone. The extra point was missed. Zach Schrader blocked Schmidt’s punt on the following drive putting the Hornets in striking distance again at the UC Davis 20. Fleming’s short pass to Deadder six plays later accounted made it 13-0. UC Davis got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter after recovering a fumble at the Sacramento State 38. Wright found Soto for their first scoring strike, this one from 23 yards that helped make it 13-7. Another fumble, this one forced by linebacker Byron Gruendl, gave the Aggies the ball back at the Hornets’ 12 early in the second quarter and Wright converted the opportunity by threading a 16-yard touchdown pass to Soto that helped push UC Davis into a 14-13 lead.
