Notes: In the fall of 2009, women’s field hockey competed in its first season since being discontinued back after the 1982 season. However, since no records remain from the previous incarnation of the sport, most numbers set during the 2009 and/or 2010 seasons constitute school records. Greg Warzecka announced his retirement after 16 years of service as director of athletics. During his tenure, the department won six NACDA Directors’ Cups and saw some of the most significant achievements in school history.

Daniel Descalso, who played for UC Davis from 2005 to 2007, earned a call-up from the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds to the St. Louis Cardinals in September; then made the big club’s 25-man roster in 2011. He hit his first major league homer on May 3 against Florida.

• Five former student-athletes and two former coaches were inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame on June 4... Alphabetically, 2011 CAAHOF induction class comprises Jason Cox (men’s basketball), Matt DeJong (men’s soccer), Kathy DeYoung (women’s volleyball, softball, women’s golf coach), Ray Goldbar (men’s and women’s gymnastics coach), Scott Gordon (men’s golf), Greg Lee (men’s tennis) and Tony Moore (men’s track & field)... Additionally, longtime gymnastics meet director Molly Goldbar (wife of Ray) earned the Special Recognition Award for volunteer contributions... Finally, former Aggie quarterback and current Boise State head football coach Chris Petersen earned the inaugural Aggie Legacy Award, granted to former student-athletes for post-UC Davis sports-related achievements.

• After 16 years at the department helm, Greg Warzecka announced his retirement as director of athletics... A former baseball coach-turned-administrator, Warzecka became the 11th director of athletics on August 1, 1995... His tenure with the Aggies includes several key mileposts in department history: most notably the launch of athletics-related financial aid and the move to the Big West Conference and NCAA Division I membership... Warzecka also oversaw a substantial upgrade in the campus’s athletics facilities: the Schaal Aquatics Center (2004), the Marya Welch Tennis Center (2005) and the multi-use Aggie Stadium (2007)... During his career, UC Davis won six NACDA Division II Directors’ Cups in a span of eight years, an award presented to the most outstanding overall program in the country.

at the NCAA Championships… The women earned their second team berth in four years after placing eighth at the West Region tournament in Auburn, Wash…. On the men’s side, freshman Matt Hansen captured the Southwest Region individual title to advance to the national tourney… Finally, the men’s and women’s track and field teams sent 15 athletes to the West Prelims at Oregon, with hurdlers Thomas Phillips and Alex Wilright advancing to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa... In all, UC Davis scored 106.5 points toward the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.

• UC Davis athletics also issued its annual student-athlete awards on the same night as the CAAHOF inductions... Linda Hermann (swimming & diving) won the W.P. Lindley Award as scholar-athlete of the year... Paige Mintun (basketball) captured the Hubert Heitman Award as the top female athlete of the year, while Jonathan Peterson (cross country) claimed the Colby E. “Babe” Slater Award as the outstanding male athlete of the year... Men’s soccer and women’s gymnastics won the Lysle Leach Award and Marya Welch Award, respectively, for posting the highest team grade-point averages.

• Nine UC Davis teams were represented in the NCAA postseason, including five that reached the national finals… Both men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the West Regional in Eugene, Ore., with Jonathan Peterson earning an atlarge spot at the NCAA Championship (where he placed 14th)… During the winter, women’s gymnastics (Anna Shumaker and Marcy Miller) and women’s swimming (Liliana Alvarez) each sent individual qualifiers to their respective NCAA meets, while the women’s basketball team earned its first ticket to the “Big Dance,” where it took on Stanford in televised action… In the spring, both men’s and women’s golf teams had representation

• Two UC Davis alumni reached the highest levels of professional sports during the 2010-11 academic year... Daniel Descalso, a 2007 ABCA All-West Region selection, made his Major League Baseball debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in September... The following spring, he made the big club’s 25-man Opening Day roster... Descalso is the second UC Davis graduate to play in the major leagues, joining former California Angels pitcher Steve Brown (1983-84)... In December, Scott Gordon became the first Aggie to qualify for the PGA Tour after firing a nineunder par at Q-school in Winter Park, Florida... Gordon, who has qualified for the Nationwide Tour in 2008 and 2010, also earned his induction into the CAAHOF (see above).

Women’s basketball coach Sandy Simpson retired after 14 years and more than 250 wins with the Aggie program. As a swan song, UC Davis posted a 24-9 record and earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of its Big West Conference tournament title.

• Sandy Simpson, who won a school-record 251 games as head women’s basketball coach, announced his retirement shortly before the start of the 2010-11 season... The Aggies sent out the 1977 graduate in style, posting a 24-9 record and capturing the Big West Conference tournament title to earn the program’s first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament... Simpson was rooted in UC Davis basketball, having played for legendary Aggie men’s coach Bob Hamilton then later serving as an assistant for Pam Gill-Fisher and Jorja Hoehn... Soon after Simpson’s retirement, associate head coach Jennifer Gross was named as his successor... Gross played for Simpson in 1997, the year UC Davis finished third at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight tournament.

• UC Davis relaunched its official athletics website www. ucdavisaggies.com in late October... The new version featured a greater emphasis on video and social media... The site design was developed in conjunction with CBSSports.com College Network, the official web site provider for Aggie Athletics.

• A 1960 UC Davis graduate and a former football and track athlete, alumnus Bruce Edwards and his wife Diane have donated $2 million to Aggie Stadium – the largest single philanthropic contribution to Aggie athletics in history... Oddly, Edwards waited four decades after his graduation to rekindle his relationship with the program: the successful Bay Area businessman did not attend his first UC Davis football game in 2001. • Junior pitcher/outfielder Scott Lyman was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft... This represents the fifth straight year UC Davis has had a player drafted in the first 10 rounds... Hours later, sophomore right-hander Joe Biagini went

• The Aggie women’s tennis team captured its fourth NCAA Public Recognition Award for Academic Progress Rate in as many years, while the women’s gymnastics team garnered its first... Teams ranking among the top 10 percent in their respective sports claim the award... The APR measures classroom performance for all Division I student-athletes. • Aggie student-athletes showcased their artistic talents in several different disciplines during the 2010-11 academic year... In late November, football player Brandon Tucker and distance runner Kristina Taylor organized the second “Art of Athletes” student-athlete art show, this time in the university’s Basement Gallery... Aquatics standout and English major Ashley Chandler was one of three undergraduates to have one-act plays performed throughout the UC Davis Theatre & Dance Edge Performance Festival in mid-April... On May 10, the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee hosted the fourth installment of “Aggie Idol,” a student-athlete charity variety show... This year’s event raised funds for Team Davis, a local non-profit which serves those with developmental, cognitive and/or physical disabilities.

• UC Davis picked up six conference championships in 2010-11… Men’s cross country claimed the Big West title in late October, edging UC Riverside by just two points… Women’s swimming & diving crushed the field at the inaugural Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship meet in late February, while women’s gymnastics successfully defended its MPSF title in March… In between those two events, the UC Davis women’s basketball team upset Cal Poly in a televised Big West Conference tournament title game on March 12… Finally, the women’s and men’s Aggie golf teams bested their respective Big West fields in the spring… The women fired a tournament-record 867 to claim the conference banner in April, then the men finished 17 strokes ahead of their nearest competitor in early March.
