“Studying art history gives you a context for the objects that you see in the museum, so it’s exciting to look at an object and have this whole other level of understanding of what was going on in the world when this piece of art was made”, said Russell Ihrig, Associate Director of Interpretive Planning at the museum. “Sometimes understanding the history helps you understand why these objects are even in a museum in the first place.”

ASTRONOMY The Cincinnati Observatory strives to share the universe and our historic site with all our visitors, and to comply with ADA guidelines, will make all reasonable accommodations to ensure a positive experience when visiting the Observatory. However please note that there are limitations imposed by our architecture, being a National Historic Landmark, and our being a functioning astronomical observatory. The physical act of getting to the telescope’s eyepiece for viewing can also be an issue. The eyepieces on our two main telescopes can be anywhere from 4 feet to over 14 feet above the floor, which typically requires climbing a stepped platform to reach.

HOW TO USE YOUR TELESCOPE Do you have a telescope sitting in the closet or over in the corner and you would love to use it if you only knew how? Do the dials and knobs leave you mystified? Intimidated? Which end do you look through? There are all of these various pieces that do what? Perhaps you know how your telescope works (sort of), but you’re not sure what to do with it. You say you can find the Moon, but beyond that, the telescope won’t cooperate. Fear not! The answers are all here. However, much you know or don’t know about YOUR telescope, I guarantee you will leave with enough knowledge to take on your scope, one-on-one, and come out victorious. We start with the sky and end with your eye. Your telescope will forever be your friend (until you get a bigger friend!). Bring your telescope along, cardboard spyglass or Hubble wannabe, and we’ll make this a hands-on learning experience. Instructor: Dave Bosse Wednesday, December 5, 8–10 pm, $35

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE OBSERVATORY Look to the heavens through the oldest continuously used telescope in the world; explore the depths of the 1873 observatory including its attic and basement; and learn why President Adams laid the observatory’s original cornerstone in 1843. Hear the fascinating history of the founding of the observatory; investigate how the 19th century astronomers determined time for the city of Cincinnati; discover why the observatory was designated a National Historic Landmark; and find out what is in store for the future. The Moon will be viewed through the telescope following the program, weather permitting. Instructor: John Ventre Tuesday, September 18 or November 13, 8-10 pm, $35

LONGITUDE: JOHN HARRISON AND HIS CLOCKS Knowing what time, it is, exactly, has been part and parcel of knowing where you are on the planet, especially at sea. Comparing sky-time with your clock-time told you where you were, your longitude. This was a nearly impossible task with the mechanisms of early time keeping up to the 18th century, which resulted in seafaring catastrophe after catastrophe; lost at sea or found on the reef. All of that changed in the 1700’s because of the life-long work of a third-grade educated, back-woods carpenter, who took on the scientific establishment of his day and brought us into the world of modern, accurate time-keeping. John Harrison’s clocks and advances in clock making told us what time it is, exactly, and set records in accuracy that stood for centuries, even into the 21st century. Let’s find out what makes clocks tick (literally).

An Exploration Exploration of of Cincinnati Cincinnati An Then and and Now Now Then Instructor: Jeff Seuss

CINCINNATI LOCAL

NEW! CINCINNATI TRUE CRIME DETECTIVE

NEW! CINCINNATI THEN AND NOW

Think you’re an ace amateur sleuth or a crack private eye? Then match wits with local crime historian and Queen City Gothic author JT Townsend as he exhumes Cincinnati’s most infamous murder mystery in this riveting 4-week class. Based on his upcoming book Summer’s Almost Gone, this interactive class will focus on the 1966 Bricca family murders.

Join local author, Jeff Suess, for an evening of exploration through Cincinnati’s rich history and vibrant culture. Using archive photos from the 19th and 20th centuries, Suess will take you on a tour, beginning at Fountain Square, out to the riverfront, then back downtown – with several other stops in between. Essential Cincinnati highlights include Roebling Suspension Bridge, Fountain Square, Union Terminal, Music Hall, and Carew Tower, Mount Adams Incline, the canal, and Old Main Library. You will receive an autographed copy of Suess’ new book, Cincinnati Then and Now. Instructor: Jeff Suess Thursday, September 13, 6:30–8:30 pm, $39

NEW! OHIO’S JOURNEYS TO WORLD WAR I On April 6, 1917, the United States officially entered World War I and over 200,000 Ohioans played a major role in the Great War. It seems fitting this Spring that we celebrate Ohio’s history in this great war. This program brings to life the history of this event with historic photos of the war and documents as seen through the eyes of local Cincinnatians. Our grandparents and great-grandparents who were involved in that “conflict” are gone and, at best, most people do not see them as the young vital men that they were when this happened. Few ever talked about the war. Come and discover names of WWI heroes in Southwest Ohio that you might not know. Instructor: Cheri Brinkman Thursday, September 20, 6:30–8:30 pm, $25

NEW! SPEND AN AFTERNOON IN AN 1800S VILLAGE Heritage Village Museum is a recreated 1800s community in Southwestern Ohio. The village contains 13 historic buildings from around the Cincinnati area; they were moved here to save them from destruction. In this class, you will receive a guided tour through the various homes and a history lesson on simple homesteading life in the 1800s. Life was tough during these times. Join Frank Farmer Loomis on an exploration of home and work life, leisure, medicine, religion, and slavery during this significant time in the United States. The class includes a demonstration of hearth cooking, withcornbread, onion pie, and potatoes--two staples of the late 1700s to early 1800s hearth cooking. Instructor: Frank Farmer Loomis Location: Heritage Village Museum, Sharon Woods Sunday, October 7, 1–5 pm, $59

The crime was hideous, unexpected, baffling. Striking between the 4th and 5th slayings of the Cincinnati Strangler, the Bricca killer plunged a city already on edge into an abyss. And more than a half-century later, the Bricca mystery is a terminal, cold case with a fading pulse. Evidence has been lost, buried, or forgotten – the truth is elusive, shrouded, or shameful. Townsend was given unprecedented access to the Bricca case file – laden with information that never saw the light of print. And as an armchair detective stalking a legendary mystery, Townsend is not shackled by the presumption of innocence and reasonable doubt. All evidence is admissible – hearsay, rumors, gossip, and undertones. In this class, you will learn to become a better armchair detective as you binge-watch Dateline on ID or other thousands of crime shows. Along the way, Townsend will share his exclusive Rules for Armchair Detectives. Rule #1: A mystery can’t be solved, but a puzzle always has answers... If you like turning murder mysteries into solvable puzzles, then surrender yourself to THIS class. Because you have the right to remain fascinated... JT Townsend is the author of the regional bestseller Queen City Gothic and also Queen City Notorious. His work has appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Magazine, Word Magazine, Clews, and Crime Traveler. As part of his True Crime Lecture Series, he had presented over 250 programs in the Cincinnati area, including Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh Kidnapping, and Jack the Ripper, as well as classic Cincinnati murder mysteries. Thursdays, October 4–25, 4 weeks, 6:30 pm–8:30 pm, $79 Your fee includes a copy of JT Townsend’s new book, Summer’s Almost Gone.

NEW! ART HISTORY AT THE MUSEUM This course will introduce major artistic and stylistic developments in the history of art from the prehistoric era through the period of Ancient Greece and Rome. Instructor: Lauren Tate, Ph.D.

“You’re immediately drawn into the tour with Frank’s wonderful stories about the architecture and history of the building - and his sense of humor all the more adds to the experience. His tours always leave you wanting to sign up for the next one!” – Janet Wernke, Communiversity student

Blacksmith Basics: Basics: Intro Intro To To Blacksmith Forging Decorative Decorative Iron Iron Forging Do you think blacksmiths no longer exist? Think again. This longest-established craft dates back to 1350 B.C. and many of today’s blacksmiths work utilized the same tools and techniques. Early smiths heated iron in a small furnace built of clay, the fuel was charcoal, made to burn hotter by using manually operated bellows. Small pieces of iron ore were placed in with the charcoal, and after several hours a small piece of fist-sized iron was produced. The Blacksmith’s shop was not only a much-valued village business but a meeting place where all the local gossip would be exchanged, and business deals made. Join UC alumni and instructor, Jordan Graff, for a glimpse into the world of the blacksmith – of today and yesteryear. During his 12-hour beginner’s course, Introduction to Forging Decorative Iron, you will be introduced to different blacksmithing techniques like bending, tapering, fullering, punching holes, drawing material out, patina and metal finishing techniques. You’ll use these skills to create decorative and functional iron art! Projects will include scrolls, decorative wall hooks, leaf keychain fob, and bottle openers. Find and ShareYour Passion: Erica L. Strayhorn

Saturday, December 1, 11 am–1 pm, $45

NEW! HEART OF MEDITATION:THE EIGHT WORLDLY WINDS Without even realizing it, we are constantly blown about by The Eight Worldly Winds: pleasure and pain, gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and disrepute. Using Buddhist teachings and the tools of insight meditation, we will explore ways to maintain balance and equanimity in the midst of change and challenges. We will experiment with a variety of meditation techniques--no experience needed. Chairs and meditation cushions provided; wear comfortable clothing. No particular belief system is required, just a desire to experience the clarity and peace that meditation can bring.

In the university’s continuing education program, it’s isn’t unheard of for a student to discover their passion while taking a Communiversity course, then go on to become an instructor themselves. One such story is that of instructor Erica Lynn Strayhorn, who took a Communiversity makeup course in 2011. “The course made me feel empowered by helping to increase my confidence in being able to apply my makeup,” she said. “It not only gave me confidence about makeup application, but it also encouraged me to try some other new and different things.”

Instructor: Susanne Noble Location: Dharma Center of Cincinnati Thursdays, November 1–29, 4 weeks, no class on Nov. 22, 7–8 pm, $59

Since taking her first makeup class, Strayhorn has become a makeup artist. She owns Erica Lynn Makeup Artistry, LLC and provides luxurious makeup services that pamper the everyday woman desiring to refine her look, the bride looking to be a more naturally glamorous version of herself, or the professional wanting a polished look for an event or professionally photographed headshots. Strayhorn also empowers women by teaching them how to create and apply a makeup look tailored just for them that simply enhances the beauty they already possess.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE FOR POSTURE, POISE AND PERFORMANCE Alexander Technique lessons provide an opportunity to unwind and get to know how your body and mind work, as your instructor guides you through common activities such as sitting, bending and walking. Through tactile and verbal coaching, you will learn to let go of unnecessary tension and effort while gaining and experience of ease, effectiveness and composure. This sense of lightness will become your reference point as you learn to apply the principles of the technique on your own. Instructor: Claire Rechnitzer Tuesdays, October 9–November 13, 6 weeks, 6:30–8:30 pm, $99

NEW! GETTING UP ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BED

“Teaching and empowering women is my passion because I believe every woman has a purpose, something special to give just waiting to be born and sometimes we need encouragement to help us get it out”, Strayhorn said. “The makeup itself doesn’t make the woman beautiful because she’s already that, but makeup artistry is the tool that I use to help women feel a little more confident.”

If you are planning on using the extra hour gained by resetting Daylight Saving Time to catch up on your sleep, why not make the most of it by learning to get a better night’s sleep. Even the best sleep-hygiene habits can leave us stiff, sore, creaky or cranky upon waking if we neglect to attend to our posture while sleeping. You may be already aware that the position you sleep in is part of the problem but don’t know which position would be better or how to change habits that rule us when we are, by definition unconscious.

Paint Like Like the the Masters Masters with with Paint New Creative Creative Painting Painting Classes Classes New This Fall, Communiversity offers five new painting classes with instructor, Kevin McCarty. McCarty has been a professional artist for over 40 years, painting landscapes, portraits, and still life. His work spans all sizes, styles, and media. Born in Cincinnati, he studied at the Atlanta School of Art on scholarship and expanded his artistic skill while living in New York City. McCarty also spent three months in Europe, where he obtained firsthand knowledge of the masters and major schools of painting. Living and painting throughout the U.S. and Europe has been a major influence on his painting style. Kevin breaks down the painting techniques of the old masters so you apply these techniques to your own artwork. You will see how famous artists mixed paint to create color and light on canvas, learn about and practice applying tonal harmony as the masters did, and eventually see they too can create tonal harmony analogous to any part of art history, from Giotto to Matisse. “It helps encourage students to show them that their approach is not only unique, but there are people throughout the history of art who have done similar things so they feel validated in their own natural skills and paintings,” McCarty said. For all five courses, students will receive one gallery-wrapped, stretched 11 x 14” fine art canvas, a set of brushes, and a full set of acrylic paints in a wide spectrum of colors at no extra cost. The courses will meet on UC’s Victory Parkway campus. > > See page 5 for course dates and times COMMUNIVERSITY FALL 2018
