Athletics Director Whit Babcock - @WhitBabcock Whit Babcock was officially announced as the University of Cincinnati’s 14th Director of Athletics on Oct. 22, 2011. Babcock, a former college baseball player, joined the Bearcats following five years at the University of Missouri, where he served as the executive associate director of athletics. The Bearcats’ leader has initiated a new administrative structure within the department, proposed a comprehensive vision and capital campaign for athletic facility enhancement including an $86-million renovation and expansion to Nippert Stadium, set forth a scholarship enhancement plan for Olympic sports, crafted a three-year strategic plan for all facets of the program, hired head coaches in football, baseball, men’s track and field, lacrosse, volleyball and women’s soccer and implemented numerous external relations strategies to connect and engage with Bearcats’ alumni, donors, fans, and students. His background in fundraising, marketing, promotions, ticket sales, licensing and multimedia partnerships were key attributes in support of his hiring. In his introductory press conference, Babcock cited three guiding principles for his vision for

the athletic department’s future: commitment to comprehensive excellence, centering the department’s focus on the student-athlete experience, and engaging the community. The department operates under Babcock’s ONE TEAM philosophy which is centered on the core values of Integrity, Respect, Determination and Excellence working together as 547 student-athletes, 150 staff, 19 sports and ONE TEAM. Over the past year, Babcock has implemented numerous changes in the academic area aimed at enhancing the student-athlete experience, reinstated and enhanced scholarship funding to Olympic sports, added men’s indoor track and field as the department’s 19th sport and streamlined his executive team to ensure better lines of communications across the department and University community. A native of Harrisonburg, Va., Babcock lettered four seasons in baseball at James Madison University and served as team captain his senior year. He earned his bachelor’s degree from JMU in 1992. In 1996, he received his master’s in sports management from West Virginia University.

Home to University of Cincinnati men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball since 1989, Fifth Third Arena has served as the venerable backdrop and to numerous exciting moments in Bearcats Athletics. The 13,176-seat facility opened as the Myrl H. Shoemaker Center, named for the former Ohio Lieutenant Governor. The building was renamed in 2004 to recognize Fifth Third Bank’s generous support of the athletic facilities improvement campaign. The festive arena, with 16 private executive suites, new Daktronics video boards and restaurant and lounge area overlooking the court, provides a loud and raucous home-court advantage for the Bearcats. A new portable playing surface, the All-Star Plus which is used by several NBA teams, was installed for the 2003-04 season and resurfaced prior to the 2012-13 campaign. Fifth Third Arena stands at the center of the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village. It is connected to the Lindner Athletic Center, which allows convenient access to the Bearcats’ state-of-the-art sports medicine and strength & conditioning centers, as well as all administrative and coaching offices and the Nancy Hamant Academic Center. The UC volleyball squad beat Toledo on Sept. 12, 1989 in the first organized athletic event in the new $32-million facility. Fifth Third Arena has been the ultimate home court advantage for the Bearcats volleyball team. Since the arena’s inception, UC has produced a .760 winning percentage (212-67) in matches played at home, as well as a .823 winning percentage (130-28) in conference matches played at home. Additionally, Fifth Third Arena has hosted 10 regular-season volleyball tournaments, one conference tournament and four nationally televised matches.

2013 COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH MOLLY ALVEY Molly Alvey was named the 12th head coach in the 40-year history of University of Cincinnati volleyball on Feb. 15, 2012. In her three-year coaching career, she has compiled a 50-45 record. In 2012, Alvey led UC to a 12-20 record and a 9-6 mark in BIG EAST play during her first season at the helm of the Bearcats. Cincinnati finished fifth in the BIG EAST standings and earned its eighth consecutive bid to the BIG EAST Championship where it advanced to the semifinal round for the fourth straight year. Alvey guided her team through a tough schedule, playing 11 matches against teams ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA Caoches’ poll, and two others against teams receiving votes. In her first season, Alvey tutored senior AllAmerican Jordanne Scott, who was a unanimous pick to the All-BIG EAST First Team, as well as the AVCA All-Northeast Region First Team and the AVCA All-America Honorable Mention team. Before coming to Cincinnati, Alvey spent two seasons as head coach at Houston, leading the Cougars to a 38-24 overall record and mentoring 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America selection Lucy Charuk. She also spent the 2004 season as the head coach at the University of Southern Indiana, leading the Screaming Eagles to Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) regularseason and tournament titles en route to the program’s second-ever NCAA Division II national championship tournament berth. Alvey’s 2011 Cougars were ranked as high as 38th in the AVCA RPI and placed four members on the all-conference teams. She guided Houston to a third-place finish in Conference USA in 2010 with a 13-7 record. It was the program’s first top-three finish since 2005 and the 13 C-USA wins were also the most in league play since 1999. During her lone season at Southern Indiana, Alvey led the Screaming Eagles to a 24-7 regular-season finish, claiming the GLVC regular-season title with a 15-1 conference record. Southern Indiana then stormed through the conference tournament to earn the program’s second-ever NCAA Division II tournament berth, advancing to the second round. In her time at USI, Alvey coached two all-region selections and the program’s second All-America selection, Laura Ellerbusch.

Prior to Houston, Alvey spent five seasons at the University of Mississippi, including the final two seasons as associate head coach. She began her career at Temple in 2001 where she spent three seasons as a graduate assistant coach. During her five-year tenure at Ole Miss, Alvey was part of a coaching staff that guided Ole Miss to a pair of NCAA national championship tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. In that time, Alvey was responsible for coaching two-time All-Southeastern Conference setter Rachel Kieckhaefer who also picked up allregion honorable mention honors as a junior.
