Welcome to U Career Success! Our cutting-edge approach has made us the number one career services offering in the university landscape.

2023 brought us impactful global events including shifts in geopolitical leadership, advances in technology that shape the way we live, and a humanitarian crisis we've never before seen. For the University of Utah, the stakes are high as we fight for the protection of quality higher education and demonstrate the value it holds for our society.

With so many challenges in the world, it's easy to become focused on the negative. However, working at U Career Success surrounds us with positive energy. In this report, you'll see why. We hope you enjoy a small taste of our exciting developments.

First, we've rebranded. Two different programs, Business Career Services and the Career and Professional Development Center, are now one.

Welcome to U Career Success! Our cutting-edge approach has made us the number one career services offering in the university landscape.

Thanks to generous support from President Taylor Randall and Provost Mitzi Montoya, we are taking our innovative model perfected in the David Eccles School of Business campus wide. In President Randall's words, "Every student deserves to access this outstanding professional development and career support." We couldn't agree more!

Next, we've built new partnerships. We have loved working with our new partners: College of Science, College of Fine Arts, School for Cultural and Social Transformation, the College of Humanities, College of Engineering, and College of Social and Behavioral Science. For colleges yet to join the full program, we are providing strong liaison coaching to ensure that every student has access to our services. We predict all colleges will be full partners of U Career Success by 2030.

Finally, I would like to thank the nearly 100 people working on the U Career Success team. Interns and professional staff alike are selflessly committed to helping our students and community partners. Through their efforts, we are able to reach for and achieve success. Because of their combined good will and that of so many allies and friends of the U, we remain positive about the future. I wish you all the very best in 2024.

Warmly,

A Coach for Every Student

Our ultimate goal is to build bridges with every college on campus and to host specialized coaches in each. Until then, coaches who are familiar with specific industries can give each student guidance relevant to the unique aspects of their target field.

For those beginning to consider their options, firstand second-year coaches guide students through all-important career exploration. We aim to get students engaged in the career success process starting Day One. BCOR 1010 – Career Exploration, a one-credit course required for all business school students, serves as a model for effective early student programming.

Power in Partnerships

By partnering with college leadership, we better understand the unique aspects of each industry and use that insight to maximize the resources that we provide to students. Placing services where students already attend classes and embedding content in their academic courses makes career preparation a natural pursuit, initiated earlier in their college experience and continuing each year.

REDEFINING CAREER SERVICES

Our Collaborative Approach

U Career Success builds on a proven method developed by the former Business Career Services team, where career coaches collaborate with Corporate and Community Engagement relationship managers to pair the right students with the right jobs every time. Students and organizations alike benefit not only from the guidance of our experts, but from the connections and networks we cultivate. The campus-wide expansion of U Career Success positively impacts all our partners: employers now have access to a greater pool of students, a wider range of campus departments increase their educational impact, and more students are empowered to achieve their career goals.

Presidential Support

Unlike many university career service offices that operate the best they can with limited resources and minimal access to key decision-makers on campus, U Career Success leadership reports directly to University President Taylor Randall. His commitment to deliver on the promise of Utah students is evoked when he states "the future which begins with the hope of each successful student." The President's Office fully expects every

student to have a richly rewarded experience as they leave the learning community and embark on personal journeys that include important contributions to workplaces, families, and society.

U CAREER SUCCESS ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023 6

Three months before graduation, I started meeting with Dominic. I had accepted a position I hated but that paid the bills – I felt defeated. Dominic and I continued to put in the work. I’m proud to say I accepted a position as a News Producer shortly after graduation. In one month, I went from lost and defeated to a success I could not imagine. Since then, I’ve been published in The Salt Lake Tribune and have been invited to speak on a panel for my work in journalism. Without Dominic’s expertise, this happy result would not have been possible.

We build CAREER CONFIDENCE

Student to Student

Our exceptional student team is comprised of nearly 40 individuals from diverse majors and academic stages. Career Success Interns work on a wide range of projects, including social media management, peer coaching, photography, podcasting, and more. Our interns bring a dynamic perspective to the table and forge a critical link to the broader student community through their active involvement in campus clubs and groups.

Beyond day-to-day operational support and event assistance, Career Success Interns drive innovation within the department. Their keen observations of challenges and proactive suggestions for solutions make them instrumental in shaping the evolution of our offerings. Serving as the voice of students in our office, they play a pivotal role in ensuring that our services align with the needs of the student population.

In return, our interns gain valuable professional experience that serves as a gateway to the world of job and internship opportunities, laying a foundation for their future growth.

The internship offers them the chance to develop critical workplace skills and notably to explore diverse interests, so they may discover a new and exciting career path. We express our deep gratitude for the dedication and innovation our intern team brings to U Career Success.

CORPORATE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Connections, Connections, Connections

The key to our distinct approach lies in the integral relationships our Corporate & Community Engagement team nurtures over time. By building close collaborations with companies, government agencies, non-profits, and other organizations, relationship managers learn how best to support hiring needs and effectively connect recruiters, alumni, and friends to student talent that builds their teams' capacities.

At last count, the Corporate & Community team manages close contacts in over 1,500 organizations, locally, nationally, and globally. They continually seek to expand those connections, building pipelines for students across all majors and programs at the University.

These corporate alliances form the basis of internship programs, career fairs, targeted networking events, site visits to company locations, alumni and expert panels, presentations to classrooms and student organizations, and other creative connections. We are deeply grateful for the partners who enrich the opportunities of students and invest in brand-building and skillbuilding in so many ways.

I can’t thank U Career Success more for our incredible partnership. As a new firm in Utah, leaning on the U Career Success team to provide resources to connect with students on campus, has been so integral to our success. Their team is creative, dedicated, and hands-on. Truly, they go above and beyond for their students and employers.

Event Spotlight

Graduation Extravaganza , Spring 2023

In April 2023, the first-ever Graduation Extravaganza took center stage as a collaborative event hosted by the College of Social and Behavioral Science, College of Humanities, and School of Cultural and Social Transformation. While dedicated to honoring graduates, this event was open to all students in these colleges and had a terrific impact on building the feeling of campus community.

U Career Success Corporate & Community Engagement played a key role by facilitating relationships with employers who attended the event, bringing together employers and students in a dynamic environment. This unique collaboration allowed graduates to connect with organizations aligned with their majors, setting the stage for future career success.

Graduation is such an exciting time for students, and we are so happy to partner with U Career Success in bringing employers to campus during this collaborative event. It not only showcases the wide range of career opportunities, but it is also a fun way for employers and alumni to celebrate with our graduating students.
