University of Birmingham Kayak Club Spring Term 2013

Na onal Student Rodeo 2013 (NSR) NSR is the largest student kayaking event in the world and definitely one of the highlights of the year. This years circus themed event was par cularly memorable with candyfloss, balloons, bbqs, own circus tent and so much more. The Birmingham clowns won the spirit of NSR prize and came third overall. A special note to Antonia for coming third in the novice category and Rhys for coming third in expert! These amazing achievements mean we can look forward to seven shinny new boats for the coming year. With Chris as our new events sec I’m sure we can all look forward to an even be er me at next years heroes and villains themed event

Rivers Summary Frustra ng water levels have plagued this terms river trips but good mes have s ll been had with beginner/intermediate weekend trips and of course, BUCS slalom! The photo shows the snowy weather experienced by those on the intermediate weekend away. Ideal for a spot of kayak surfing ...

Polo This year we have had lots of new people have become interested in polo and some old faces have come back to take us to victory (that means you Dec and Rikard!) We have competed in numerous division 4 leagues at regional and na onal level, as well as a division 2 regional league. One of our division 4 mee ngs resulted in Birmingham coming home undefeated! And we came third place in the overall division 2 league table! Even though the last tournament we played within this league featured most definitely the funniest, and I have to say the most off course shot thanks to Mr Newfield. Facing away from the goal never ends well when shoo ng! I think he may have also binned himself during this a empt; there’s a nice li le image to make you chuckle even when you’re bogged down by uni work. On the other hand this year has also included some spectacular goals such as Tom Ault’s goal from the halfway line during ULU tournament at the beginning of the year. Other goals include some cheeky ones from Laura and Jess who represent almost half of the brand spanking new ladies team. Hopefully ladies we will make our mark on BUCS without losing too much of our innocence! On the pitch I mean of course. Before this academic year is finished we have one more division 4 na onal match and of course BUCS! Those who went to Cardiff last weekend are most definitely prepared for anything the weather may throw at them during BUCS in April a er enduring rain, snow and a bit of hail. Although I think the alcohol on the Saturday night helped hold the cold at bay. No ma er the weather we will have fun and hopefully score LOADS of goals (maybe even a few cheeky ones when not facing the goal :P ), and of course bin some rivals, during the course of the weekend! Thank you to all those who have played and helped out throughout the year. Bring on BUCS and a great year for polo and kayaking next year! Vivat Birmingham!
