ver since I was a little boy I was fascinated with jets. As a child, my parents took my brother and I to countless air shows around the country and I watched in awe while the planes flew overhead. This excitement fueled my passion for flying and aviation. I must admit, Top Gun, was on constant repeat at the Werley residence, and to this day I still get goose bumps when I see an airplane take off and smell the exhaust fumes from burning Jet A.

Chris has been in the wine trade for over 25 years, beginning when a trip to Europe after high school graduation developed into a life-long passion for wine. He has worked in virtually all of its aspects including winemaking, restaurant, import, wholesale, and retail. In 1996, he became only the thirteenth American to have passed the demanding Master of Wine Examination. Today, there are still only 29 Americans out of a total of approximately 235 people worldwide who have passed this most demanding wine examination since it was first given in London in 1953. The exam not only covers winemaking and grape growing, but the business of selling, marketing and distributing wine as well. It also demands that successful candidates identify (in a series of blind tastings held over three days), the grape(s) used, where they were grown (country and region), vinification methods employed, the vintage or age, alcohol, acidity, sweetness and the quality/ maturity in a line up of 36 wines. Chris has also worked as a lecturer and educator for a wide array of clients including American Express, Merrill Lynch, Georgio Armani, IBM, Accenture, The Television Food Network, J.P Morgan, The Consulate Generale of Monaco, The Wall Street Journal, Crystal Cruise Lines, and many more. His success as a wine educator/lecturer can be attributed to a unique understanding of what people want to know about wine, a talent that evolved during years of working with clients of his retail shops.

Elisa Gaudet has worked in the golf industry in the U.S. and Latin America for the PGA Tour and the Tour de las Americas before founding Executive Golf International. Prior to golf, Elisa worked in the entertainment industry as a model and SAG, AFTRA actress. She has appeared on numerous radio and TV programs and has been a guest speaker on a variety of golf topics. Her syndicated “On the Lip” column has been running since 2003. In 2011 she launched the Two Good Rounds, a golf lifestyle brand with the first endeavor being the book Two Good Rounds – 19th Hole Stories from the World’s Greatest Golfers based on interviews with 36 of the top golfers in the world discussing their 19th hole favorites. his season Ferragamo focused on putting the sport back in sportswear by marrying it to tailored pieces, creating hybrid looks. LOIRE VALLEY Vins parfaits pour l'été

T

he Loire is the longest river in France, meandering past a myriad of picturesque villages and Chateaux and through world-class wine regions, each with a unique climate, geology, grape varieties and style of wine. The river’s headwaters are in the center of France in the Massif Central, and it flows northward to Orleans where it turns west and makes its way to the Atlantic. It is one of the largest producing wine regions in France, making almost as much wine as Bordeaux. While there are dozens of individual appellations, it is sometimes thought of in three main areas: Upper, Middle and Lower. With its cool northern climate, its red and white wines are perfect for summer fare, and the following are some of the better-known areas. The Upper Loire lies hundreds of miles from the sea and the climate here is more continental - in many ways it is more akin to the Burgundy region of Chablis than the rest of the Loire. The best-known regions are Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, along with lesser-known Quincy and Menetou Salon, and they are considered to be some of the best places in the world for Sauvignon Blanc. The combination of cool climate and limestone/flint soils produces wines with zippy acidity, racy minerality, and citrus and herbal notes that are crisp, dry and refreshing. They are great with all kinds of shellfish, seafood, sushi or salads. A small amount of red and rosé wine is also produced from the Pinot Noir grape, especially in Sancerre. The rosé wines are often superb – light to medium in body, cool crisp and clean, with hints of red fruit and pale salmon color. The reds, such as Sancerre Rouge, can be a little tricky as the cool climate makes a style that is higher in tannins and acids than the typical California or Oregon Pinot, but they can be delicious especially in warmer vintages when they get just a little more ripeness and fruit.

The Middle Loire is known mainly for white wines made from the Chenin Blanc grape and reds from Cabernet Franc or Gamay in the Anjou and Touraine. The Vouvray appellation makes delicious Chenin Blanc that ranges from crisp and dry (labeled as Sec), softish and off dry (demi-sec), to sweet dessert style wines (Moelleux). Huet is one of the best growers in Vouvray and the wines are well worth seeking out in all styles. They also age incredibly well, and from time to time the winery will release 42 Valley Social Magazine

whites that are several decades old. The best-known red wine regions include Chinon, Bourgueil, Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, Samur and Saumur Champigny, making red wines from the Cabernet Franc grape. They can range from medium in body with bright acidity that are ready to drink young – almost Pinot Noir like in some ways - to fantastic age-worthy wines from some of the top growers like Olga Raffault in Chinon, Breton in Bourgueil and Clos Rougeard in Saumur Champigny whose wines can age for decades. These regions are cooler than Bordeaux and California where the grape is also grown, and the wines here are typically more elegant, fine boned and almost Burgundy-like in their style than they are big and powerful. They a earthy, cool and sometimes herbal in tone, often with good acidity and tannin, and they are great with light meats like duck, game birds, pork, poultry or grilled meaty fish. There are also wines made from the Gamay grape, vaguely Beaujolais like, fresh and fruity, and some lovley dry, crisp rosé wines as well. The Lower Loire is where the river finally meets the sea near the city of Nantes. The climate is decidedly maritime and the wines of its best-known appellation Muscadet are influenced by the nearby Atlantic. Muscadet is crisp, high acid mineral wine that is a reflection of the cool climate and geology, with soils that include clay, gravel and sand above sub soils of gneiss, schist, granite and volcanic rock. The Melon de Bourgogne grape used for Muscadet is fairly neutral in flavor, and the wines are often aged on the yeasts left over from fermentation to allow the wines to gain some richness and texture in a process called called “sur lie”. Muscadet is racy, mineral, and focused, and the best come from a handful of small family estates, with Domaine de la Pepier being one of the tops. Most Muscadet is inexpensive, making it a great summer wine, and it is the perfect wine with oysters, clams, shrimp, sushi and all kinds of seafood. These are just a few of the many wines and regions along the Loire, a region whose wines are well worth getting to know especially of you are looking for lively refreshing whites and reds for summer. status as his fans fell in love with his voice and music style in "Lost Without U," a soulful ballad later voted by People magazine as the "2007 sexiest song of the year." The hit found its spot at number one on four Billboard charts simultaneously: R&B/Hip Hop album, Hot R&B/Hip Hop song, R&B Hip Hop Airplay, and Hot Adult R&B Airplay. Thicke returned to the stage in 2008 with a modern ’70’s tribute album, Something Else, paying homage to the era that influenced his own successful career. The name is Trump and it's coming up roses

W

hat's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet;” William Shakespeare's Juliet believed little importance should be paid to a name, most specifically in reference to Romeo's family Montague. Well we know how that ended. Quite the opposite can be said about Trump with the recent addition of Turnberry Resort Scotland he now has 17 golf courses around the world in his portfolio. Donald J. Trump boasts a 4 handicap and his company creed is the commitment to creating the world's finest portfolio of golf courses. Even more impressive is the fact that many of these courses are playing host to some of the most important golf tournaments in the near future. Most notably the PGA Championship at Trump National in New Jersey in 2022. Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey will host the 2022 PGA Championship and is already slated to host the U.S. Women's Open in 2017. The Senior PGA Championship will be played at Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Virginia, in 2017. His recent purchase, Turnberry , on the western coast of Scotland, has already hosted the British Open four times, and it remains on the rotation. Trump National Doral near Miami hosts a World Golf Championship and the Trump course in Puerto Rico hosts the Puerto Rico Open, a regular PGA Tour event.

I interviewed Donald years ago in 2005 at Bedminster during the Writers Cup when he only had four courses. While some things have changed, he has lowered his handicap by a stroke and added 13 golf courses to his portfolio; others are still very much the same like his focus and determination to have a name in golf in a very notable way.

From 2005 article: Donald Trump emerges from his helicopter that has just landed on the golf course at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster N.J., ready to play a round of golf and captain one of the teams in the annual Writers Cup. He has entered our lives much like a character from an Ayn Rand novel, many times swimming like a salmon upstream: he has overcome naysayers, governmental agencies and regulations, recessions in the economy and competitors in order to produce superior products. From ice rinks to skyscrapers to golf courses. The common thread that joins all of these diverse projects is Trump’s dedication to superior products and a relentless pursuit for the best. Adding golf to his portfolio of investments is largely due to his interest in the sport – Trump is a 5 handicap, and because, as he said, “For years golf has been my passion and I like having courses where I spend time." Like much of the land in the Northeast, the Bedminster property had agrarian roots. It was previously known as Lamington Farm, and its rich history dates back to the 1600s. The Duyckinck family occupied the house and land from the 1600s through the early 1900s. Legend has it that John Duyckinck, an alleged British Sympathizer, was jailed and eventually exiled by George Washington in 1779 to live within the boundaries of the property. The land was then obtained by the Morgan Cowperthwaite family, which kept it for three generations. The property was popular with high society for its fox hunting and formal dances. In 1981, the property was sold to automobile manufacturer John Z. DeLorean, whose celebrity brought a new awareness to the estate. The land was acquired by Trump in 2002. Since then, the buildings have been restored and a beautiful 18-hole, 7,081-yard golf course was built along with an Olympic-size pool, spa, tennis courts and a “village” of elegant guest cottages. The estate has now returned to its former grandeur and majesty, Trump-style, with no detail overlooked, no luxury spared . . . indicative of the man and our times.

CHRISTINE TAYLOR Hollywood’s Queen of Comedy: Lehigh Valley’s Christine Taylor Shares The Secrets To Her Success as a Film Star, Wife & Mother

} VS: Because we’ve been watching you on TV and in films since you were still in high school, a lot of people don’t realize that you grew up in the Lehigh Valley. Where exactly did everything start for you? CT: I grew up in a little neighborhood in Wescosville called Shepherd Hills, under the Allentown umbrella… one of the suburbs. I went to Allentown Central Catholic School, and before that, I went to elementary school at St. Thomas Moore. My dad's still in Allentown. My Grandma's there. I really have nothing but great things and memories about having grown up there. VS: How did you first fall in love with acting? CT: I started dance class when I was three. I wasn't an intense dancer or anything, but I always loved the recitals where you put on the big performance for the audience. That was sort of my first taste of what it felt like to do something on stage, dress up in costumes and have people clap for you. I took dance class for about ten years, from the ages of three to thirteen. Every year I kept re-signing up because I loved the recital at the end of the year. I never really loved to dance. (laughs) I didn't even love the dance classes that much. I started community theater, just because I had a love for being on stage. That was the most fun part for me. I went through some elementary school plays and then the community theater really started in my freshman year in high school, when I started to audition outside of school for some plays and started to work. VS: You didn't come from an entertainment family of any sort. Did that make it challenging to find the support and inspiration to pursue a career in acting? CT: No. Not at all. I feel like even though no one in my family had any show business ties or connections of any sort, my family was always a very funny, outgoing family. We laughed a lot, joked a lot. My parents took me to the theater growing up. We loved movies and TV. We all sort of shared that in common. St. Thomas Moore was the first place I saw a musical when I was seven or eight. I saw a church production of “Godspell”. I just remember looking at the actors on stage and hearing the songs. I just remember saying to my mom, "I want to do that." I felt like that was when I first saw how creatively stimulating being on stage could be. That's what really continued throughout. 70 Valley Social Magazine

I have a daughter in elementary school now, and she's doing the school play, and I was laughing because I said, when I was in fifth grade I remember auditioning for “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, and not getting cast. It was the most devastating thing to happen to this ten year old in fifth grade. The next year, I sort of wanted to do it, but there are always people that are going to be wanting to do it too. It wasn't like it just clicked right off the bat for me. The next year, I auditioned for “A Christmas Carol", and I got a little part. That was sort of my little step in. That made me want to do it a little bit more. With each year, I got a little bit of a bigger part and little bit of a bigger part. Really sort of paid my dues, locally, there. (laughs) Before I started getting the leads in plays. I feel like that just was a good life lesson… that it doesn't come easily, even in your fifth grade school play. VS: Was your goal always to land a role on television, move out west, and work your way into films? CT: Never. At that point, I had never even been to the west coast. In fact, working professionally is something that I sort of stumbled into during the summer before my junior year of high school, when Lois Miller, a manager who had a daughter on a TV show in LA, was starting up a talent management company right in Allentown. She'd seen me in a play, a community theater production of something that I'd done. She approached me to say, "Hey, would you be interested in auditioning for commercials at any point? You can drive to New York and go on some auditions and see how it goes." I think when she first approached me I was very involved in my high school world and my activities and probably whatever play I was doing at the time. It just wasn't the right timing. I remember over the summer, when I had some free time, she said, "They're looking to cast a Burger King counter girl. They're on this national search for this face. Would you be into going in and auditioning for it?" My mom and I said yes, of course. It was over the summer and it was a fun day in New York. It was a two hour drive into the city. We parked the car. I walked up to the audition. The audition took probably twenty-five or thirty minutes. (laughs) It was so short! I had never experienced that before because the community theater auditions were very intense and hours and hours. I just remember va l l e y s o c i a l m a g.c o m

reading off of a cue card and that was that. I left and my mom and I spent the rest of the day in New York City and had a blast. Lo and behold, I ended up getting the commercial. It opened up a world that I didn't even know. It was such a different type of acting. I was used to being on stage in the theater. These commercials came along, you could audition for ten or twenty a week and not get any, but it was a really fun process. I got to meet all of these cool people, and I happened to have some success in that. I ended up doing a bunch of commercials over the course of my junior year in high school. At the time you didn't have to sign exclusively with an agent. The agency pays attention to the people that are getting cast. I remember it was at that point that they started sending me on some other auditions for soap operas. Soap operas were really not my thing. There were always a couple that I wanted to get on. When they would say they wanted an 'edgy' girl, I would wear a jean jacket and think that was 'edgy' (laughs) for a soap opera. I was so naive when I walked into the room to see what New York City's version of 'edgy' was. That was when they sent me for an audition for this Nickelodeon series called “Hey Dude”, which was going to be Nickelodeon's first episodic series. That was in the beginning of my senior year in high school, when I auditioned for that, and ended up getting cast in that. I was just kind of going in to it blindly and having fun. I thankfully had parents that are fully supportive. They had this "Let's go for it," kind of attitude. I think what they thought was like, this is just going to be a fun phase and something that will be really fun to put on a college resume. (laughs) Because, how can it last? When I ended up getting the show, I ended up having to sort of relocate in my senior year for part of it to Tucson, Arizona. That was my first time I ever moved out west. I spent a couple of years doing that show and getting to know people who were on the show and people who worked in California and in LA, more sort of show business industry people. That sort of led me to LA from there. I had gotten into NYU. My plan was I was just going to go to NYU and sort of audition for commercials or audition on the side, but the Nickelodeon series sort of took me in a different path. VS: Are you surprised that “Hey Dude” has become something of a cult phenomenon over the years? CT: Yeah. I can't believe that. It's so crazy. When we did the show, it was such a little show. Nickelodeon wasn't what it is today. It had its following and kids watched it, but today, all these kids from the Nickelodeon shows are these sort of teen stars and multi-talented singers and, dancers. We were just this little show. At the time, when it aired. I know people watched it and enjoyed it, but that was sort of it. It wasn't the kind of phenomenon that the shows like “iCarly” ... It didn't have that kind of following at the time. I remember finishing the series and moving to LA and having a sort of credit on my resume of sixtyfive episodes of “Hey Dude”. All the casting directors had any idea what it was. They werere all saying, "What is Hey Dude? What is that show?" When it ended, it sort of just ended. They didn't syndicate it. It didn't air for years and years after that. It really was a decade later when the kids that watched it had had grown up and I would see them out socially. I would be in a grocery store line and the checkout person would say, "Oh, I loved you on Hey Dude." It was these

grown ups. They would say, "No. I watched every episode." VS: One thing that stands out about your career is that, despite reaching stardom so young, you never fell into that wild, out-of-control lifestyle that so many of your contemporaries succumbed to. What kept you on the straight-and-narrow path to a balanced family lifestyle? CT: Thank you. I think that's a really nice compliment. I have to attribute a lot of that to where and how I grew up. I didn't grow up in LA or in the industry. I think that I attribute to my parents and my family and trying to always stay as grounded as possible. I lived a very traditional life up until high school, when things started to shift a little bit for me. I even remember when they offered me the role in “Hey Dude”, my biggest issue, was that I didn’t want to say yes to the part unless I knew that they'd let me come home for my senior prom and my graduation. It meant more to me to be able to be with my friends and finish high school the way I started it. All that stuff still stayed true for me. For me, a shift came, as it does for some women, when I got married and had children… my family really became the priority. The roles started taking a back seat to what my life was. That just happened organically because I realized when I had babies that I wanted to be with them. Going off to work for too long a period of time was hard for me because I missed them and I wanted to be at “circle time” and pick them up. I think that probably is the balance that you're talking about a little bit, that I really appreciate you noticing. I just think it's sort of the way my life fell into place. VS: After focusing on films, you’ve built an impressive and enduring career on the big screen, appearing in favorites like “The Brady Bunch Movie”. “Zoolander”, “The Wedding Singer” and “Dodgeball”. Where did you get the comedic chops to pull off a line like “ I just threw up in my mouth a little bit”? CT: Comedy was something I loved to do. I always loved watching them growing up. My family, my friends… we all had favorites that we grew up watching. It was so exciting to get to be in a lot of them, especially some that I consider classics. That "Throw up in my mouth," line, I've got repeated to me probably (laughs) ten times in a week. You know, I really get it a lot. That, and the Marsha Brady thing, which I'm super proud of and I think is really cool. VS: As you mentioned, you’ve been very selective in recent years about devoting time towards your career. With that being said, what are your goals for the near future? CT: At this stage of my life, my daughter is in middle school. She's going into 7th grade next year. My son is going into 3rd. They're little people now. They can actually function without me if I'm gone for a few days or if I go off to do something. It took me a long time to not have that mother guilt of “are they going to be okay?” It also speaks to some of my control issues of wanting to be there and wanting to be with them. It's been a real teaching process for me because I realized it's important for them to see me go off and do things. I think particularly with my daughter, because my husband works in a very big, different capacity that I do, but I thought it was important for Ella to be able to see that moms can go work, too. It can be different.

VS: After a long successful career in radio, would you change anything? CL: Honestly, no. I was blessed to have a chance to work several radio formats in medium to major markets from the age of 16 years old and that really allowed me to have a nice rounded knowledge of music and a broad career in multiple radio formats and day parts. From Rock, Country, Top40/CHR and even Adult Contemporary to Mornings, Afternoons, and Nights, I’ve seen and done it all and that will always keep a smile on my face. Flying to L.A. for work was worth it for the In-N-Out Burgers alone! VS: What does no one know about you? CL: That I always wanted to be an artist! Obviously, one would think a musician but I really wanted to be Bob Ross or a variation of him. The fact that the guy would make Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, or Prussian Blue sound like colors of the rainbow was mesmerizing to me. I tried painting a Gerber daisy on canvas once. It took me 3 days, looked like an 8 year old did it, and I tossed it in the trash. At least I can say I was Bob Ross for 3 days! I’ll take it! 82 Valley Social Magazine

VS: What is your perfect escape? CL: Bermuda! St. Maarten always had my heart and still does in a way but there is just something about Bermuda that’s not able to be described in words or even photographs. You just simply need to go there…and keep going back! VS: What is your favorite spot in the Lehigh Valley? CL: I don’t think I have one spot that I would call a “favorite” but if you are talking about amazing culinary destinations in the Lehigh Valley, I’ve become a BIG fan of brunch. I find it to be a very relaxing and even calming experience. You don’t feel rushed, and usually you experience it with friends or loved ones and even if you do fly solo, you always meet someone that is there for the same reason as you...a wonderful experience. Plus, who doesn’t love lobster eggs benedict at 11:30 on a Sunday? VS: What is the next big thing? CL: I’m not quite sure, but whatever it is I am positive it will be plastered all over Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with the hashtag #NextBigThing so I’ll keep my out! va l l e y s o c i a l m a g.c o m

The warm humid weather is around the corner. With the climate change, Mother Nature annually re-introduces large populations of bugs. Spring and summer are an active period for many pests, including the pesky blood-sucking ticks and fleas. Fleas are wingless, blood-sucking insects that love to prey on our dogs, our cats and, occasionally even people. Fleas lay hundreds of eggs each day and the complete life cycle of a flea can be completed in as little as just 11 days! But, fleas are hardy too! If the environment is not right, flea larvae can make a cocoon and stay safe for up to five or six months. The best way to get fleas off of your pets and keep them out of your house is to work with your veterinary team and use safe, effective flea medications. Topical drops and oral pills are available to help kill all the adult fleas on your pet. But, since the adults are only about 5% of the population, it’s important to treat the environment too. Look for area treatments and environmental sprays that contain Insect Growth Regulators or IGRs. These will stop flea eggs from hatching and keep larvae from maturing. Be wary of over the counter products. Although some are good, please check with your veterinarian before applying on your pets. Some have caused severe problems, especially when used on the WRONG pet. Many “natural” or “organic” flea treatments lack any proof of effectiveness. For example, garlic tablets show no effect on fleas and could be harmful to cats. Ask your veterinarian about which products will work best for you and your pet. In addition, he or she can often provide you with good advice on stopping the infestation in your home. Ticks are blood sucking parasites that can carry of host of diseases to both people and pets. The best known of these diseases is Lyme Disease. Other diseases animals can contract from ticks are Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mounted Spotted Fever, and Anaplasmosis. Our dogs and our horses are susceptible to Lyme Disease and the illness often manifests as joint pain, recurrent lameness or even lethargy. Thankfully, the disease is not contagious between dogs or even between dogs and people. The blood-sucking tick is the only way to get this quiet disease. Lyme cases in humans is on the upswing in many areas of the country as the specific tick species that carry the bacteria causing Lyme disease expand their reach. Some experts believe that canine cases are increasing as well because dogs are outdoors much more than people and many pets aren’t tested for Lyme Disease. A veterinary in-house test kit is available for diagnosis from your veterinarian. It can help determine any exposure your pet has had to Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis bearing ticks. The good news is that we have many safe products, including topical medications and preventive collars that can help kill ticks before they spread the disease. There is even a vaccine that can help protect dogs that live in tick infested areas or that are at high-risk of contracting the disease. Antibiotics are available to treat affected animals. Ask your veterinarian about the best methods of tick control and how you can help keep your pet safe from a “tick”ing time bomb!
