UAU studio follows an intuitive approach into ceramic design, allowing the hand of the maker to be present in each piece. The Romanian studio was founded by Vanessa Singenzia, whose exploration of the versatility of ceramic materials has led to a distinctive design identity. Through UAU’s UAU design philosophy, the process underlines the attentive craftsmanship that it employs to crate sculptural and conceptual objects that meet the functional. With this in mind, it has led the studio to have a more personal approach by choosing to work only on limited edition objects.

OBJECTS AND PRACTICE

“…throughout my creations I want them to set a mood, to convey a feeling. I don’t want you to pass by that object daily and just say, ‘Ah yes, that’s just my lamp’. I want it to make you feel something and hopefully acknowledge its presence.”

CHANKA-HANKA Mobile Chandelier

A mobile of hanging shapes which wheren’t forced into its final form, but rather allowing space for intuitive decision during the process of making .

The Oven

side table - an offbeat sense of humor with a whimsical sensibility. A collaboratory project made together with Reborn Bicycles, a Romanian based studio specialised in custom painting and colouring techniques. Exploring eclectic themes, ranging from vivid colours to a simple shape (inspired by the studio ceramic kiln) to capture the way new possibilities can be created in ceramics by embracing and working intuitively across the media. This piece was hand build on an intimate and human scale, allowing it to be sensitively manipulated and sculpted into its final form. A different appearance was sought to achieve a look alike infrared thermal imaging aesthetics. Through this innovative technique, multiple thin layers of engobe paint were applied to the unfired ceramic body and over the course of many hours and meticulous work of sanding through the layers a complex animated surface was revealed. After firing, a colourful distinctive mottled finish has been achieved, an aesthetic that subverts and dismantles traditional frameworks and understandings of functional ceramic objects.

“SYNKRO”, considers the effect objects have on our physical and mental environments. Featuring glowing neon elements supported by ceramic bodies, the two complementary light objects represent masculine and feminine energies and reflect the human desire for communication.

The project starts from the idea that our hands are extremely finely tuned instruments, and touch is a deeply human experience. The rhythms of our bodies synchronize through touch, for example when we hug. The relationship between comfort and touch can be extrapolated to other experiences, such as working with ceramics. Touching ceramics leaves a mark that remains forever. This gesture actually tries to place the idea of comfort in eternity.

With this robot look alike shape, I imagined the owner having the choice of diffusing the light as she feels to by rotating the mobile part to set a new ambiance or simply having it face her book.

Space • Form • Line Coffee Table. Hand-sculpted in terra-cotta and basaltic fiber waste. The shape follows the movement of the hands making it almost a meditative process.

“BIRDS” , a collection of 3 limited edition carafes made together with Reborn Bicycles Our idea arises from the inspiration we gathered by studying the feather pigmentation of 3 different birds. Kingfisher, Purple-Crusted Turaco and Cheeked Bee Eater

REFLECTIONS

Miss Solar System, light object inspired by Space .

Luna Coffee table is an ongoing research on materiality, a pure form with natural elements such as white clay and glass. The object was inspired by the dramatic light phenomenon called scattering that occurs during the sunset. Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays, causing them to scatter and produce into a variety of hues. Through the use of the glass top, colour and layering, unexpected effects are created which play with ones visual perception and the surrounding space.

Montipora, hand painted atmospheric light object.

Sunray Venus Flower pot. - A coherent way to perfectly merge glazes together.

The Ugly - The Beautiful

This story is different, it tells a tale about us. These characters, the masks are a subject of sociology and collective psychology, psycholog they have remained as a kind of archeological witnesses of past mentalities. Characters from popular mythology and folklore are presented in this fantastic world that unfolds with the force of a ritual. The Ugly and The Beautiful seem contradictory at first but in fact, without pursuing the annulment of each other, the intention is to let them act in some kind of continuous tension so that the harmony of the show is given by the equilibrium of contrasts and not by the absence of one or the other. Amusingly these characters symbolise, us humans they depict grotesque or comical characters that come from the world of the village, the fruit of superstitions or ludic manifestations from the heart of the community. This is us - The Ugly and The Beautiful - the folklore - traditions.

“ I always design things with function in mind, but maybe when you see the installation in person for the first time, it doesn’t look like the most functional thing. It’s a delicate balance of aesthetics, materiality, form language, and function. “

The Ancestors. A limited edition light collection which is meant to be viewed from every angle as free-standing sculptures, where form and function coexists organically.
