A BeAutiful MessAge to Be shAred … A man, who regularly attended meetings with his friends, suddenly without any notice stopped participating. After a few weeks, one very cold night the leader of that group decided to visit him. He found the man at home, alone, sitting in front of a fireplace where a bright and cozy fire burned. The man welcomed the leader. There was a great silence. The two men only watched the dancing flames around the logs that crackled in the fireplace. After a few minutes the leader, without saying a word, examined the embers that formed and selected one of them, glowing most brightly of all, removing it to the side with a pair of tongs. Then he sat down again. The host was paying attention to everything, fascinated. Before long, the lone ember flame subsided, until there was only a momentary glow and the fire soon went out. In a short time what was previously bright light and heat had become nothing more than a black and dead piece of coal. Very few words had been spoken since the greeting. Before preparing to leave, the leader with the tongs picked up the useless coal and placed it again in the middle of the fire. Immediately, the ember was rekindled, fueled by the light and heat of the burning coals around him.

When the leader reached the door to leave, the host said: Thank you for your visit and for your beautiful lesson. I'll return to the group soon.“ Why is the group extinguished? Very simple, because each member that withdraws takes fire and heat from the rest. It's worth reminding group members that they are a part of the flame. It's also good to remind us that we are all responsible for keeping each other's flame burning and we must promote the union among us so that the fire is really strong, effective and lasting.

THE GROUP IS ALSO A FAMILY. It doesn't matter if sometimes we are bothered by so many messages that reach the chat. What matters is to be connected. We are here to meet, learn, exchange ideas or simply to know that we are not alone. Let's keep the flame alive.

THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR FIRE. Life is beautiful with friends.

Please STAY with us.

Star-spangled banner

Lupang hinirang

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.

Bayang Magiliw, Perlas ng Silanganan Alab ng Puso sa dibdib mo'y buhay Lupang Hinirang, Duyan ka ng magiting, Sa manlulupig di ka pasisiil.

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.

Sa dagat at bundok, Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw, May dilag ang tula At awit sa paglayang minamahal.

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y Tagumpay na nagniningning; Ang bituin at araw niya Kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't pagsinta, Buhay ay langit sa piling mo; Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi Ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo.

I would like to convey my heartfelt felicitations to all the Officers and Members of UAP Southern California Chapter headed by Arch. Lucille E. Floresta-Fainsan, on the celebration of your 10th Year Chapter Founding Anniversary. You have reached another milestone in the life of our organization. Also, it is with great pleasure that I wish you all a happy New Year full of joy and success as we get through together to a very unique experiences of last year and shift into the new chapter of our fiscal year. It feels that when we are apart and adapting to the new normal for about a year now, the excitement and enthusiasm of our colleagues from UAP Southern California Chapter resonates even at a distance, and we can still feel in our hearts how collaboration and connection with each other in a UAP gathering is really important. This is what we have always aimed for. To be an organization that marries enjoyment and passion. Where learning and camaraderie are integrated. And where it serves as an avenue to cultivate our talents, hone our skills, and be the best versions of Filipino architects that we are destined to be. I encourage each and every one of you to continue learning and adapting to the needs of our present times, and step up as professionals ready to lend your expertise to anyone who are in need.

And as the pride of this prestigious organization, I join you to endure our commitment to the ideals of Noble Leadership, Good Governance, and Member First Policy that have come to define our organization spirit of unity, so that together we shall continue to achieve our aspirations to serve better our members and the architecture profession, and continue our pursuit of professional excellence.

My dear colleagues, this year 2021 is our celebration of the 100 Years of Architecture in the Philippines—truly an exciting milestone worth commemorating. We have always been taking pride in our profession’s roots, our forefathers who have planted the seed for us, our great Filipino architects whose magnificent works have all left us in awe and admiration, and our colleagues and contemporaries who are paving the way for Filipino architecture to gain global exposure.

But also, this year gives us a whole level of renewed strength, motivation, and inspiration to keep on moving forward as a united profession. To take our industry to greater heights, to elevate our skills, develop our core competencies, and continue proving to the world how great a Filipino can be in terms of builds and designs. Once again, as you celebrate your Chapter’s birthday, remember that there will always be dreams grander or humbler than your own, but there will never be a dream exactly like your own...for you are unique and more wondrous than you know. I wish you a blissful celebration that rises to the top. Congratulations UAP Southern California Chapter! Stay strong together, build faith, always be grateful, and live longer. Mabuhay ang UAP Southern California Chapter!

Saanman sa mundo, ipinagmamalaki kita Arkitektong Filipino!

OUR HISTORY | 2011-2021 | by Warm greetings to everyone! Year 2021 is a significant year as we celebrate our Ten-Year Anniversary, a big achievement for all of us. It is a celebration for all who have been a part of the United Architects of the Philippines Southern California Chapter. Ten years ago, in 2011, the birth of the United Architects of the Philippines Southern California Chapter came to life. After the founding of UAP CAL116 (based in Northern California) in 2008, and under the leadership of the late Arch. Eduardo Quezon, a vision to reach Filipino architects based in Southern California became one of the first goals. They realized a separate and independent chapter in Southern California would best meet the needs of colleagues in the area. The move would also be beneficial for those who resided in Southern California and were holding positions of responsibilities with the Northern California Chapter. It allowed them to be more effective in the service and pursuit of the UAP’s mission and aspirations. A small group of Filipino architects based all over Southern California started hosting gatherings throughout the Los Angeles area. These meetings captured the interest of more Filipino architects, and as a consequence, the UAP SoCal Chapter was formally established. Throughout that time, UAP CAL116 was very supportive and engaged, travelling to Southern California,

participating in a few of the general membership meetings.

On January 31, 2011, UAP CAL116 issued to us their board resolution number 01 series of 2010-2011, a resolution sponsoring the creation of an independent Southern California Chapter. With this and together with other pertinent documents, our application was submitted to the UAP National Board of Directors through the National Committee on Chapter Organization on February 01, 2011. After a laborious process of preparing and completing all requirements, the formation of the United Architects of the Philippines Southern California Chapter was formally granted by the United Architects of the Philippines National Board of Directors on April 26, 2011 with Chapter Registration No. 130. Our chartering and first ever induction of officers and members was held on October 16, 2011 at the Almansor Court in Alhambra, California. Arch. Emerito Maulion was the first Chapter President of UAP SoCal, as interim during its formation process for Fiscal Year 2010-2011, and upon chartering as the first inducted President during Fiscal Year 2011-2012. He was supported and assisted by the following chapter officers: Arch. Leilanie Pekson Panyawai, Vice-President for Programs and Development; Arch. Teofilo Cotangco;, VicePresident for Operations;

Frank Lloyd Wright influenced me the most, professionally. His design quest of breaking-out of the box and creating Organic Architecture appropriate to its place and time were always consistent with nature. As an early proponent of freeflowing plans and well-lighted windows, FLW reunited his shelter’s interior to the outdoor’s natural environment. I admire his passion for beauty, genuineness, harmony, creativity and proven stability of his structures. One way I can contribute to the success of our Chapter is by effectively collaborating in unity with our members in some of the Chapter’s projects.

The best I can do to support the Chapter is to show loyalty and commitment. Voicing out my opinions as well as listening to other members will contribute to the success of our Chapter. The SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM UAP Southern California (UAP SoCal) Chapter wanted to find a way to give back to the community and make a meaningful impact in the world of Architecture. With this thought in mind, and many projects considered, the idea of putting up a Scholarship Program was born! The Chapter’s Scholarship Program was initially proposed during the term of Chapter President/CP Joven G. Joaquin, Jr. in Fiscal Year 2019-2020. It was later adopted and further pursued by CP Lucille E. Floresta, the current Chapter President for Fiscal Year 2020-2021. Unanimously approved by the Chapter Board and General Membership, a Scholarship Program Fund Drive was launched in September 2020 in conjunction with the publication of a Yearbook to commemorate the Chapter’s Tenth Anniversary on April 26, 2021.

and where majority of students come from low-income families. They came into an agreement that the screening for potential scholars will be handled by the Office of the College Dean while the final selection of recipients of the program will be determined by the Chapter. Also, the Chapter would raise the much-needed funds and will continue to do so annually, and the recipient would receive scholarship money for tuition fees or course-related expenses. The projected pilot implementation of the program will be this incoming school year 2021-2022. The members of UAP SoCal believe that in giving generously, we share our blessings, and build the strength and talent in UAP. Our legacy then becomes a cycle of generosity to improve our community and build a stronger and better future for the United Architects of the Philippines.

In Fiscal Year 2019-2020, then Chapter Secretary Floresta reached out to Dean Jocelyn R. Lutap of the College of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (CADBE) of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) to explore the possibility of granting academic scholarships to academicallyoutstanding but financially-challenged architecture students. It is worth noting that this University was chosen because it is regarded as the largest state university In the Philippines by student population

II Your organization’s drive and ambition to help well-deserved recipients are the solid base and every achievement is one of the many steel posts of the structure.

Congratulations to UAP for extending a helping hand and be an instrument for UAP’s recipients in shaping their future.
