PROGRAM NOTES Bach’s “Fugue,” from Violin Sonata in g minor BWV 1001 is part of a collection of six pieces (three sonatas and three partitas) for solo violin which were published while he was employed as Capellmeister at the court of Leopold, Prince of Anhalt, in Cöthen (about 75 miles southwest of Berlin) (Rothe). Bach's solo literature is a popular choice to play on marimba due to its dark, resonant timbre (Bunting). With the initial four entries of the subject, this fugue suggests as many as four independent voices. This g-minor fugue features a unique subdominant answer, the dominant being the usual key of a fugal answer (Rothe). This fugue is a sophisticated addition to the literature and highlights the expressive potential and elegance of the marimba as a solo instrument using any of the 4-mallet grips (Allred). Oil and Water was written as part of the Duo Rodina Songbook project to create accessible works for percussion and clarinet duo. The title of the piece derives from the contrasting instrument materials (wood vs. metal) and the writing that is consistently independent in nature. However, as the piece demonstrates, these two materials that do not mix may still work together in beautiful harmony, despite their independent characteristics. (Gottry)

Stop Speaking is a contemporary solo for concert snare drum accompanied by digital audio playback. The composer has chosen two seemingly monotone voices: the snare drum and Vicki (an electronic voice), together to create a dynamic conversation. Extended techniques such as thumb rolls, nger icks, and use of a spiral textured stick on the rim are used throughout this intriguing composition. Andy Akiho, based out of New York, is a trailblazing composer who is building notoriety for pushing the limits of classical and other genres of music. (Allred) Blues for Gilbert has its origin in the same way that many Bach organ pieces and some Mozart keyboard works originated: It was a written-down version of the composer's improvisation. It is a gentle piece, using the "cool jazz" feeling that the vibraphone now often evokes. There is great tenderness in its shimmering feeling, and a sense of loss. It is, of course, dedicated to the memory of Gilbert Webster, who was Glentworth’s teacher. During one of his last lessons with Webster, the teacher, who was dying, asked him to just play the vibraphone for him while he rested. Glentworth improvised some music for him on this and other occasions. Later he wrote some of the improvised material down and arranged it as a vibraphone solo.

A duet for two marimbas, Into the Air is a composition that uses themes of rock and tonal minimalism to achieve a sense of ight or soaring through the sky. My rst time listening to a live performance of Into the Air is very memorable for me because it was one of the rst times that I had that moment of inspiration where I said to myself “I want to do THAT”. I nd it appropriate to end this journey how I began. (Allred) Ivan Trevino is a Mexican-American composer, percussionist, writer, and arts advocate whose music has been performed on ve continents in over 25 countries. He is a multi-award winning recipient of the Percussive Arts Society’s International Composition Contest and has over 70 compositions and songs to his name. Most recently, he was the featured composer on American Public Media’s Performance Today. (Trevino)
