Every woman looks forward to maternity at some point in her life. This ideal maternity event is, however, tainted with fear. As health care costs are consistently rising, the general childbirth support is becoming expensive.

Less Waiting Time At the beginning of 2015, the Dubai Health Authority issued Policy Directive Number 2, saying every medical insurance plan in Dubai should meet or exceed the minimum benefits set forth by the National Health Insurance Law. This covers all maternity policies. To add to this, maternity treatment has also become a permanent inclusion in most family insurance.

Maternity coverage, which once was optional and a separate inclusion in employment insurances, was recently became mandatory. Insurers started to change their offerings. Instead of requiring a minimum of 1 to 2 years before covering any preexisting conditions, the waiting time is lowered to six months.

Basic Package The basic package for essential health benefits (EHB) for those who are earning Dh4,000 has access to family or general physician, surgical procedures, referrals to specialists, laboratory tests and diagnosis, emergency services and maternity care.

Pregnant women are advised to get medical insurance or review their existing coverage and look for the following: 

How many months are necessary before a woman can fall pregnant and be covered by insurance? Can she enjoy the same benefits if another pregnancy occurs in less than twelve months?

Does it cover normal and Caesarean deliveries?

Are the benefits exclusively applicable to hospitals accredited by the insurance for inpatients? Does it cover home birth alternatives as well for outpatient?

What guarantee or compensation is there if any complication happens while delivering?

Do insurances cover ultrasound scans, tests and gynaecology visits?

Are health products included in the insurance like maternity cover, equipment, anaesthesia and post-natal supplements?

Does it include postpartum care?

Does it have extra benefits for the newborn like screening tests?

Getting everything prepared and well organised before the big day will help mothers later on.
