Best of UAB 2022

Kaleidoscope is beyond proud to present 2022’s Best of UAB for this year’s Family Weekend. We sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

As it turns out, most people prefer not to share, but to guard their favorite things rather jealously. It can be difficult to share your favorite sandwich shop, because, well, who wants to wait in a longer line for their favorite sandwich? It can be difficult to share something like your favorite place to cry, because a good space to cry is rarely shared with others.

It’s for that reason, though, that we’re so exceptionally thankful for everyone who voted this year. Over 400 Blazers decided to share all the things that have made their experiences at UAB just a little more special. That’s over 400 small acts of selflessness that make me and the rest of Kaleidoscope so unbelievably proud to be a part of this community.

It’s my hope that those acts of selflessness will contribute to a better time at UAB for anyone who reads this issue. From the world-class food to the world-class people, these names are on these pages to act as a guide for all of the very best this campus and this city have to offer. Use that guide to make memories that will last–memories with your friends, with your family, or just for yourself. Use it to help you find favorites of your own, because at the end of the day, the Best of UAB is not an objective list–it is decided by you.

Spend your Family Weekend with the people that matter most. Drive down U.S. 280 to visit Best Place to Take Your Parents-winning outlet mall The Summit and enjoy some of the finest shopping this city has to offer, or walk just around the corner from campus to Best BBQ-winning Jim ‘N Nicks in Five Points to try some of the best barbecue you’ll ever have.

Thank you to all of the talented writers and designers that worked so hard to bring this magazine to fruition, and thank you to all of our readers and their families, without which this magazine would have never been possible.

One of the great things about UAB is that you don’t have to leave campus to experience some of the best things Birmingham has to offer. Campus Faves explores all the hits that you can find right outside your dorm.

With over 30 fields of study ranging from philosophy to biology, the College of Arts and Sciences is a highly integral college on campus. It is the largest academic entity at UAB, meaning there is a good chance you have been involved with CAS at some point during your time here. It is also housed in some of the most impressive buildings we have to offer. Heritage Hall is probably the most recognizable academic building for students, and the newly opened University Hall is the stateof-the-art new headquarters for CAS, which is located on the other side of the Green.

You can do practically anything in CAS, whether you want to participate in research on drug discovery or see a symphony concert at the Alys Stephens Center. With some of the best programs in the country and tons of student resources available to ensure you get the most out of your education, it’s

College of Arts & Sciences clear why CAS was voted as best college.

BEST DEPARTMENT Chemistry

UAB’s world-class Department of Chemistry is a leader not just in the state, but in the Southeast as a whole. Its state-of-the-art research facilities and peer learning techniques have earned approval from the American Chemical Society, and more importantly, from the voters of Best of UAB. The Department of Chemistry has proven to be one of the best entry points for some of the world’s finest chemistry graduate programs.

Dr. Mitzy Erdmann

If you don’t know Dr. Mitzy Erdmann, chances are you’ve heard of her. Her General Chemistry course is a rite of passage for many studying at UAB, and it’s through her platform overseeing this class that she’s earned her spot among the Best of UAB. Known for her exceptionally positive attitude and her interactive approach to teaching, Dr. Erdmann is one of RateMyProfessors.com’s highest rated professors at UAB, and it’s no wonder why.

BEST FACULTY MEMBER

Glynnis Jackson

Coordinating a staff of 24 Resident Assistants in addition to a building of over 700 residents is no easy feat. UAB Student Housing Residence Life Coordinators are responsible for fostering a safe and inclusive environment for both residents and Resident Assistants. This is accomplished through intentional interactions, programmatic efforts and staff support. Over the past year, Residence Life Coordinator Glynnis Jackson has exhibited an astounding aptitude in compassion, advocacy, and resilience. Abbie Cheely, a resident assistant at McMahon Hall, states,

“I couldn’t be more thankful to have Glynnis. She personally invests in each one of us. [2021] was my first year on staff, and in the middle of figuring everything out, I felt so taken care of. She leads us so well; and even though we all joke around with her, we all still have a tremendous amount of respect for her. I couldn’t do this without Glynnis.”

We are so grateful for Glynnis and her remarkable impact on our UAB campus community!

DORMITORY McMahon Hall

It may be the newest residence hall, but McMahon Hall has quickly become a student favorite, already making an impact in its first year open on campus. The hall is a great place to start off your college career, with its kind RAs and conveniently close dining spots. With its warm, welcoming lobby and (usually) working elevators, McMahon Hall is full of all the charm and coziness you could ask for in your home away from home.

BEST DINING

Einstein Bros. Bagels

Einstein Bros. Bagels continues to be a favorite among students on campus, with its flavorsome bagels and coffee. Popular offerings include their fruity smoothies, avocado bagels and egg paninis. With such a variety of meal options, there’s truly something for everyone at this popular on-campus dining spot.

BEST BUILDING The Hill Student Center

Founded in 1969, UAB continues to have an unsatiated desire to refine and redefine its campus. One way in which UAB has displayed this inclination is by demolishing the original Hill Student Center that was open for public access in 1983. The remastered version, which was finished in 2015, has been a treasure to all UAB students who frequent this facility.

This campus hot spot offers a multitude of dining options and comfortable seating for studying and socializing. Whenever students need a break from their work, they are always welcome to use the Game Room on the second floor. The upper floors are a mecca for campus resources, including, but not limited to, the Trio Program, Disability Support Services, and Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs. The Hill Student Center has been a tremendous addition to UAB that has garnered love from students of all backgrounds. It is sure to make former UAB President Samuel Richardson Hill proud that it was named after him.

BEST HOSPITAL Children’s of Alabama

Children’s of Alabama is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the country, with over 3.5 million square feet across multiple locations. The Russell Campus in downtown Birmingham is the largest of these and one of the most notable buildings in the Health District. Not only does its window-covered outward appearance make it eye-catching from the street, but there are also many unique features within the building for patients. Education centers, meditation rooms and even a theater, are all things patients can look for when trying to make their stay more comfortable.

Children’s of Alabama also provides many educational opportunities for those looking to go into pediatric care. UAB students can learn about medicine, psychiatry, and surgery and do research through Children’s, as well as apply to entry-level jobs for anyone looking to add to their resume for medical school. They provide jobs for all the people of Birmingham, and are in fact, one of the largest employers in the state. And what is one Birmingham staple with Children’s? Going to a Barons game, where the fans are waving hello with their phone flashlights to the patients in their rooms overlooking the field. Sometimes, you’ll see a couple of lights waving back!

BEST STUDENT ORG Trailblazers

There’s a solid argument to be made that there isn’t a single student who hasn’t benefited from the services of the UAB Trailblazers at some point. From guiding campus tours for future Blazers, to assisting students with getting started on their academic journey, the Trailblazers are the first friendly faces that almost every new student sees at UAB.

The energy they bring day in and day out is astounding to observe. There are very few organizations on campus that exude the same relentless optimism that our beloved Trailblazers do. For these reasons, it’s no wonder that they’ve comfortably earned their place among the Best of UAB.

BEST SORORITY/FRATERNITY Delta Gamma

Delta Gamma is a fraternity founded in 1873 and has been internationally established on over 151 college campuses. Their most recognizable symbol is an anchor that represents hope, the Founders’ watchword. The philanthropy effort of Delta Gamma is Service for Sight, an initiative to support schools across the country founded by the sorority for women with visual impairments, as well as other organizations that promote sight preservation.

UAB’s chapter of Delta Gamma, Zeta Xi, was officially installed in 1991 alongside the Zeta Nu chapter at Montevallo. DG has many exciting events on campus, most notably Anchor Splash, in which fraternities and sororities compete in a synchronized swimming competition. They also attend social events ranging from football tailgates to Talladega Superspeedway races. The Zeta Xi chapter has raised over $50,000 for Service for Sight and has won numerous Delta Gamma awards along the way.

BEST PARKING Just Don’t.

Going to school in a downtown area has its fair share of advantages. You are close enough to numerous restaurants, bars, and stores that you can walk or ride your bike almost anywhere. However, when you do have to drive, the worst part of doing so is finding somewhere to park.

UAB has several parking lots next to key buildings on campus, but if you are an off-campus student who doesn’t want to pay for a parking pass, then you are stuck with street parking. And in the main areas of campus, there is none. Unless you are an early riser who gets to campus before most people have class, there is a very slim chance you can snag a spot around The Green or near the Hill Student Center. If you are in a bind, the best option is to just drive a little further away from the center of campus and walk.

UAB Transportation also offers great services, such as the Blazer Express, that can help students get from one side of campus to the other. Take advantage of these services, and just don’t bother trying to park on campus.

Over the past couple decades, Birmingham has undergone a renaissance in leisure and nightlife. The city has never been more ripe with places to kick back and have a good time. Local Hangouts enumerates all the best places to get some friends together and experience the fun of the Magic City.

16

BEST PLACE TO TAKE PARENTS The Summit

If there’s one thing UAB parents love as much as their Blazer children, it’s visiting the Magic City to be a part of their Blazer lives. For many UAB families, that long-awaited yearly visit culminates in one thing: shopping — and there’s no better place to do it than The Summit. From getting groceries at Trader Joe’s to styling a new fit at Lululemon (both of which are fellow Best of UAB winners), there is truly something for every family at Birmingham’s peak outlet mall.

BEST PLACE TO RELAX The Campus Green

Students agree that the Campus Green is the best place to relax on campus. It’s hard to argue that there isn’t an odd, welcoming silence that resides compared to the hustle and bustle of the city. It also helps that it attracts some of the best breezes you’ll ever find. When you’re not getting melted by the sun, it’s so easy to doze off while reading a book. Though there are corners of shade throughout, there are many more places to catch a good tan. We recommend the three trees by University Hall that, when the sun sets, are a perfect place to center oneself.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING Crowne on 10th

Nestled comfortably in the heart of Glen Iris, Crowne on 10th is a quiet apartment community with more than enough to offer. Its proximity to icons of Birmingham cuisine like Dreamland BBQ and Giuseppe’s Cafe are great lures, but its biggest draw is its distance from campus. With a short walk or an even shorter bike ride, you can climb out of Crowne’s resort-style pool and take your seat in class within 15 minutes flat.

The Campus Recreation Center is a great facility for achieving fitness goals for students and faculty alike. There is something for everyone to enjoy, no matter what sort of exercise you are looking to do. Want to go on a casual walk with a friend? Hop on the indoor track. Want to play pickups in basketball, soccer or volleyball? Make your way to the open gym courts. Want to test your climbing abilities? Well, there is a rock-climbing wall!  The Rec has pool tables, game consoles and a 30-person hot tub for people looking to have more casual fun with friends. Whatever activity you and your friends want to get up to, there is a good chance you can do it at the Campus Rec Center.

The best time to visit Railroad Park is at sunset. Sitting on a bench or lying on the grass with a good book under the soft, golden light of the sun — or going for a walk through the park with a friend — are some of the peaceful moments that life has to offer. Railroad Park’s vast landscape, trails and greenery makes it a great place to go be in the sun. The next time you’re feeling stressed or wanting to have a moment of solitude, take a trip to Railroad Park, better known as “Birmingham’s Living Room.”

There are plenty of venues around Birmingham to properly host and entertain that special guest, but which location can truly eclipse the magic of Vulcan Park? Not many. Its exhilarating climate is the reason it has won Best Date Night for two consecutive years. Vulcan possesses a romantic ambience that induces great conversation and highlights the beautiful architecture of downtown. A date does not have to cost an arm and leg. In addition to its pleasant setting, the admission fee is only $6!

Life moves fast at UAB. For some, a quiet place to get away from the fast pace is of utmost importance. Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens is the perfect answer to that need. From the beautifully ornate Japanese garden to the picturesque crape myrtles to the rugged bog garden, this place feels like worlds within worlds outside of Birmingham. It is the ideal spot to take an hour or three to forget that you’re in Alabama’s biggest city and stop for a moment to smell the roses.

It’s the perfect place to hang with friends or catch a game you’ve been dying to see — all while eating the best wings in town. And if you’re someone who’s unsure about what to get, order a bundle of the mango habanero wings. You’re welcome.

BREAKFAST

The Original Pancake House

Sitting right at the convergence of Five Points South, the Original Pancake House is a Birmingham staple that has served outstanding breakfast to the Southside community for years. At yelling distance from campus, it is the prime spot for UAB students to experience the best pancakes the Magic City has to offer. With its signature mid-century character and remarkably friendly service, the Original Pancake House should without question be on every Blazer’s Birmingham restaurant bucket list.

MELT

The days of carefully crafted, artisan sandwiches are falling to the wayside. Big sandwich franchises are creeping into every community. Evidence for the impending doom of the locally sourced, lovingly made sandwich is piling up. MELT, however, is definitive proof to the contrary. With locations in Avondale, Hoover and Huntsville, MELT is by far the best spot in Birmingham to take a seat and enjoy an exceptional sandwich.

BEST VEGAN Slutty Vegan

Slutty Vegan, a black-owned business that started out in a food truck, opened its first restaurant location in Atlanta back in October 2018. Its CEO and founder Pinky Nicole wanted to provide healthy vegan and plant-based options to Atlanta’s West End community. Around 1,200 people came to support Slutty Vegan’s grand opening and try the delicious food that gained the restaurant its popularity. With five locations in Georgia and now one in Birmingham, Slutty Vegan’s delicious plant-based burgers with “Slut Sauce” and “Slutty Fries” will immerse you into a vegan experience you will never forget.

BEST SANDWICH

Okinawa Steak House

In a town as removed from the marine economy as Birmingham, good seafood is often in short supply. Thankfully, Okinawa Sushi & Hibachi Steak House acts to remedy that. A landmark in the Homewood community, Okinawa provides the Magic City with world-class sushi at a wallet-friendly price. Great service and great fish make this restaurant an absolute must among Birmingham’s thriving restaurant scene.

Zydeco

For 33 years, Zydeco has been a pillar of Birmingham’s nightlife. Situated right down the street from the convergence of Five Points South, it has served as a hub for some of the Magic City’s best parties, live music performances and late-night carouses. There’s no better place to spend a Friday night with some friends, soaking up some of the finest drinks and underground musicians our city has to offer.

EATS

It’s no secret that Cook Out is the best place to grab food without having to break the bank. There aren’t many fast-food restaurants that offer a burger combo with two sides and a drink for less than $5 — Or that have $2.99 milkshakes in 40 different flavors. Whether you’re a fast foodie or looking for an affordable meal, Cook Out is a restaurant that will not disappoint. Only a few blocks away from UAB’s campus, Cook Out stays open until 3 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday!

The Cheesecake Factory

Founded nearly 50 years ago in Beverly Hills, California, the Cheesecake Factory offers accessible five-star cuisine. From first dates to graduation parties, the Cheesecake Factory is an American staple with a propensity to foster new shared experiences. If you’re looking for a place with an intimate ambiance and “all-you-can-eat” bread varieties, look no further than the Cheesecake Factory.

BEST 5-STAR RESTAURANTS

BEST FAST FOOD Chick-fil-A

Home of what is considered by many to be the first commercially sold chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A truly is one of the best fast-food chains in the country. They are surely a favorite around UAB, with multiple different locations spread around Birmingham, the closest to campus being the one in Five Points.

Whether it is their waffle fries, cool wraps or just an original chicken sandwich, it is hard to find any misses on the Chick-fil-A menu. Not only will you be treated to delicious food but great customer service as well. The combination of friendliness and efficiency so often displayed by their employees is more akin to a familyowned restaurant rather than a fast-food drive-thru line. The only downside to this Georgia-based giant of the chain restaurant world is you couldn’t eat it every day of the week. (I always seem to crave some Chick-n-Minis on a Sunday.)

Pro tip: When visiting the Five Points location, always order ahead on the Chick-fil-A app. It’ll save you tons of time not having to wait in the in-person line.

BEST CLOTHING STORE

Lululemon

While there is no shortage of quality clothing stores in the Birmingham area, Lululemon, located at The Summit, has become a go-to spot for those looking for fresh and stylish attire. The store’s sporty yoga clothing comes in a variety of colors and sizes, ensuring there is an athleisure style for everyone. With a positive environment and helpful staff, it is no wonder Lululemon has become a must-shop spot for those looking to stock their closets.

BEST THRIFT STORE Lovelady Thrift Store

Thrifting is the key to living a fashionable lifestyle on an unfashionable budget. There are many great options to make all of your $20 tag-popping dreams come true, but Lovelady takes the cake by a significant margin. Money spent at either of Lovelady’s locations is money that supports the Lovelady Center, an organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of women that have fallen on hard times in the Birmingham area. Its mission of uplifting women to help make their community a better place is reason enough to be considered the Best of UAB, but its fantastic selection of clothes, furniture and electronics sets it even further apart from its thrifty contemporaries.

BEST GROCERY

Trader Joe’s

There’s something about shopping in Trader Joe’s that warms the heart. It harbors a small-town feel, like Doose’s Market in the fictional town of Stars Hollow from “Gilmore Girls”. Ok, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but Trader Joe’s does not try to resemble other grocery stores. Since 1967, it has been an entity of its own. That is why it is so beloved. Almost everything sold in Trader Joe’s is uniquely their own brand. From fresh produce, frozen goods and pantry items to even their own skincare products — not to mention the warm and friendly welcome you get from its employees — Trader Joe’s is the perfect neighborhood market to go for some affordable grocery shopping.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

A steady supply of ice cream should be a part of every college student’s survival arsenal, and there’s no better place to get it than Jeni’s! Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, located in Pepper Place, has become a local staple. With a variety of colorful, unique ice cream flavors, such as Wildberry Lavender and Watermelon Taffy, Jeni’s is a spot you must try while you’re in Birmingham.

Hero Doughnuts

Hero Doughnuts & Buns only opened in 2017 and has since become a staple of the Birmingham area. With two stores, one on 2nd Ave. S. next to Railroad Park but the other in downtown Homewood, you are never too far from the best doughnuts in town. They use briochestyle dough, fillings and toppings made from scratch to produce quality doughnuts and buns for breakfast sandwiches and burgers. The stores have an inviting atmosphere, so there is no better spot for cinnamon-roll doughnuts and mimosas on a Saturday morning.

SALON

Vestavia Nails

For the Vestavia Hills community, Vestavia Nails is more than just a nail salon – it’s family. Known for remembering and taking care of every face that passes through their doors, the family behind Vestavia Nails is safely seen among the ranks of the kindest souls in the Birmingham area. Every nail technician holds themself to the highest standard of service and friendliness. Vestavia Nails is a great place for a pedicure and the perfect remedy to a bad day, and for that reason, it’s easy to see why UAB chose them as Birmingham’s best nail salon.

Massage Envy

When the stresses of life at UAB start to pile up, you can count on Massage Envy to make them all go away. There are few better places to set aside 90 minutes, take a load off, and experience one of the best massages you’ll ever get in the Magic City. With its exceptional service and its masterful decompression techniques, Massage Envy could turn the anxiety of finals week into the relaxation of a beachside lounge chair during spring break. It’s the perfect spot for Blazers to treat themselves and destress after a hard day of working and studying.

BEST PLACE TO NAP

Your Dorm

College life is superbly fun, but it is also superbly exhausting. There comes a time every so often when the unending day-to-day learning, partying, rinsing and repeating must be interrupted by an hour or two of peaceful and serene rest. The Magic City is many amazing things, but unfortunately it is, for the most part, neither peaceful nor serene in its vast urban sprawl. That’s where the age-old expression applies: there’s no place like home. Your dorm is not just a base of operations but an escape from the nonstop action of campus life at UAB. It’s a place of privacy and tranquility, and it is by far the best place in all of Birmingham to take a nice, relaxing nap.

BREWERY

Avondale Brewing Co.

Avondale Brewing Co. opened its doors in 2010 and has since become one of the most recognized breweries and concert venues in Birmingham. Not only can you enjoy a variety of brews year-round, but you also might be lucky enough to see one of your favorite artists playing there on the weekend. With a huge outdoor space great for playing games, watching a show or football game or just having a drink with friends, Avondale is sure to provide an environment everyone can enjoy. They have an exciting event calendar full of everything from music festivals to fundraising events, so there is a reason for everyone to visit.

BEST MOVIE THEATER

AMC Vestavia Hills

The greater Birmingham area has countless movie theaters for your weekend plans, but the Vestavia Hills AMC is a student favorite. Unlike other theaters, the Vestavia location has special amenities such as a Dine-In program and a PRIME screening room to make it stand out. The Dine-In experience is as good as it sounds; meals of your choice are delivered to you without the need to leave your seat. PRIME screening rooms are specially tailored screening rooms with higher quality projection and sound systems. The AMC at Vestavia Hills is a great place to catch a movie for students looking for a different type of experience.
