We are not resting on our laurels, however. Dear me no; we are continually looking at ways to build on what Kettering U3A has to offer. See within our new-look Newsletter, and please shower Richard with well- and hard-earned appreciation. He puts in a huge amount of time and skill into producing this vital publication, month after month, on top of all the other things he does behind the scenes. Interest Groups can help by getting their pieces and pictures up-dated and submitted in plenty of time. The same can be said re keeping the notice boards up to date. (Wrist-slap to self as one of the worst offenders!) And finally, my brethren, please make sure your membership is up-to-date, too. We know where you live.

Busy Needles — Busy Needles continues as industrious as ever. Donations of wool, needles, patterns, knitted squares, half-started projects etc. are all most acceptable. If you don't know what to do with all those odd buttons you've amassed over time but don't like to throw out, be assured we will be happy to make good use of them, too. Thank you, Maureen (Curd), for your welcome woolen contributions.

It is with great regret that we advise you that Freda Smith passed away on Wednesday 5th August 2015. Freda was an active member of the Kettering U3A for eight years, holding the post of Secretary on the Committee for two separate periods as well as being involved in setting up the website. She was also the Group Leader of the Card Making 2 group for six years and had made many friends within the U3A. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and our deepest sympathies are extended to her family on their sad loss.

Proposed New Group JAZZ APPRECIATION The group will cover both modern and traditional jazz. Meetings will be monthly and feature music/CDs , discussion about the artists together with an exchange of views/ideas relating to jazz. There was an element of sadness in the book, but lots of lighter and humorous moments. We are now full to capacity, having welcomed 2 new readers who, I am sure, will be bringing to the group their suggestions for us to read. We are now about to start Robert Harris's book "An Officer and a Spy" which I am assured is a very good read, and are allowing ourselves 2 months in which to read this. Contact:

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments. Canals & Waterways — Fifteen of us enjoyed a two hour boat trip from Abington to Oxford. The weather was cool but dry. On arrival in Oxford we broke into small groups, some visiting the Colleges, some the Ashmolean Museum and others went to the Botanical gardens. A good time was had by all. All the places are taken for the Canal boat trip in September

Card Making 1 — As my operation was cancelled we held Card Making as usual. We had the usual two mornings of creative pleasure, laced with our usual exchange of news and views. We spent the morning making boxes for delicate decoupage cards and then creating beautiful cards to go into them. Everyone was most competent and the cards were so professional. I think everyone gains so much joy on these mornings. I know I do. The next meetings are on Tues 1st and Weds 2nd of September. I would like to express my sadness on the death of Freda. We shared many card experiences and she was an inspiration to me. RIP.

Card Making 2 — The subject for this month was men's cards. Packages were prepared for us and major choices were made. Gardening, fishing or football. Then the fun began; folding and sticking pockets, putting on collars, pushing out tools and the usual phrases " What do I do next? Where does it go? Does it look alright?" Everyone made fantastic cards and we were also visited by my twin grandchildren. At only 2 months old they were much admired. Thank you ladies for making such wonderful cards. Computer Group — As I have joked many times, if you have a computer problem, ask your grandchildren. Well this time I had to ask my daughter to help with the Android session we had this month! She knows more about Android than I do.

Computer Bits — Windows 10 BEWARE! Windows 10 has now been released, with a FREE upgrade for one year, for existing Windows 7 and 8.1 licenced users. All reviews so far have been favourable and I have installed it ready for the Computer Group meeting on 22nd September and so far it looks good and a massive improvement over the dreaded Windows 8 with which everyone struggled. BEFORE you decide to install it, make sure all your existing programs will work. You need to check each one on the manufacturers web site. Also check your printer and any other device you have will work with Windows 10. In any case, I always recommend waiting a few months so any bugs are fixed before you upgrade. Soon you should see a new small Windows icon on the task bar at the bottom. When you are ready to install, simply click on it and it will either offer to install Windows 10 immediately or ask you to “reserve your free upgrade” it and will notify you some time when it is now available for you. Microsoft is phasing the releases over some weeks or months. The actual installation process seemed painless and took about 2 hours with several automatic re-boots during the process.

As you can see from the screen shot below, the start menu is back as used in Windows 7 and previous versions plus some of the Windows 8 items. Either way you should find it more familiar and an easy transition.

Also personal help at www.Computing121.co.uk Country Matters — We visited Wicksteed Park on our last visit for a walk around the park and particularly the lake to compare it with our visit in December last year. We spotted plenty of wild fowl and also an egret one of which we first saw last year. There were quite a few damsel flies, purple loosestrife and flowering rushes. The water plant areas are becoming more established and it is good to note that Wicksteed’s are doing their bit to protect wildlife. We also walked through the arboretum and noted a buzzard and a kite. Several of us enjoyed lunch in The Piper on our return. Please note that Derek is suspending the group for the foreseeable future as he is my carer when I return home after my operation whilst I convalesce. He will keep the group updated as to my progress and hopes to resume ‘normal service’ as soon as possible – he’ll probably be glad of the break by then! Contact:

Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust is celebrating its 60th birthday this year, so it would be good to have a few riders from U3A to prove that you are never too old. The Trust exists to make grants to churches in Northamptonshire, not only for repairs, but for toilets and kitchens, which bring churches into the 21st century, and which we really appreciate when we receive a welcome cup of tea on some of our ‘Looking at Churches’ visits. This year’s; Ride and Stride is on Saturday, September 12th and most churches are open from 10.0am to 4.0pm. Janet Clements has a list of all the churches involved in Northamptonshire and also sponsor forms. The money goes half to the Trust and half to a church of your choice but it is not necessary to be a church-goer. Looking at Churches — In July we visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Northampton, which is a round church, based on the original Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There are a few circular churches in England, but this is the best preserved. It was built as a Thanksgiving for a safe return from the Crusades in the Holy Land, by a local wealthy Norman knight. We had the bonus of two guides, one historian and one militarian speaker, as St. Seps, as it is called, is the church used by the Northamptonshire regiment. There is a chapel dedicated to the two World Wars, with many memorials to soldiers who fell during these times. The church has a world famous window called the Jaffa Window, depicting Richard the Lionheart at the Battle of Jaffa. It is being restored at the moment, but will be magnificent when finished. Afterwards we had tea & cakes in the church, so it was a happy social occasion. Our next church is Warkton to see the newly restored memorials there. This is on Wednesday August 19th at 2.0pm. The church will be open for the whole of August, but hopefully there will be guides in attendance to speak to.

Lunch Club — Our thanks go to Elizabeth and Kathleen for organising the July lunch which was enjoyed by all as usual I am sure, I am sorry I was away and missed it. We are having a summer break for August and are continuing our lunches in September. The date will be 22nd September organised by Maggi McGuire and Sue Hart, venue to be arranged. The menu will be at the U3A meeting the week prior, look forward to seeing you all in September.

Knit and Natter - Several of our members, including Annette, being away, Jean, Jackie, Janet et Michele came to Geddington, not to see how the other half knits, in fact, but it was interesting how the two groups maintain their distinct identities whatever the venue. That's one of the most delightful aspects of U3A Interest Groups: diversity - even when the "Interest" is the same. How lucky we are. Next time we are back at Annette's as usual. Meanwhile, Janet is organising a craft stall at Rothwell Church on the 15th. Let's hope for a good response.

Musical Circles 2 — A session where the scope and range of various instruments combine to make beautiful music Violin. The Rondo from Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 61 with Itzak Perlman on the violin. 10 minutes of pure virtuoso playing. Fair Organ Just one or two moments of Gavioli’s Fair Organ playing Pomp and Circumstance in D was all we could stand before turning to Voice. Placido Domingo sang Una Furtiva Lachrima from Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amour with the London Symphony Orchestra and there was hardly a dry eye in the room. String Orchestra and Bell. Composed by Arvo Part, this cantata in memoriam of Benjamin Britten played by the Bournemouth Sinfonietta was an unusual piece in that there was a continuous string accompaniment throughout with the sonorous sound of a bell coming through. Clarinet. We were then delighted by the first movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Quinet K 581 with Keith Puddy and the Gabrielli String Quartet. A favourite with the group. Harp and Flute. Composed by Louis Spohr this Work for Harp and Flute was to allow his wife Mariella to demonstrate her technical ability. The leading harp player of the 1800’s she was probably the best in Europe at the time. Note that the harp takes the lead in the title. Piano. John O’Connor then took centre stage on piano playing Beethoven’s Piano Sonato no 14 Opus27/2, otherwise known as the ‘Moonlight Sonata’, demonstrating the range of the instrument and his talent. Recorder. Not noted as a serious instrument Telemann’s Recorder Suite in A minor, played by the Capella Istropolitana, proved well worth listening to and demonstrated the breath control required to play this instrument seriously. Horn. Another firm favourite. Mozart’s Horn Concerto no 3, K 447, and the first movement played by Kurt Redel with the Camerata Labacensis brought us back to familiar territory. Running out of time we finished of with The Orchestra. Holst’s the Planet Suite and Mars, The Bringer of War brought the session to a rousing finale. An enjoyable afternoon in good company with plenty of time for refreshments and a gossip. If this is what floats your boat then have a word with Eileen. Ray Bradbury.

Photography Group — The Photography Group experimented with a full day out for its July meeting instead of the usual Monday afternoon two-hour sessions. We chose Stowe Gardens, as a lot of the group are National Trust members but had not been to Stowe. We welcomed two new members to the group, Steve and Margaret, so we are back to full strength. A rather grey sky developed into blue sky and sunshine during the day and it became distinctly hot and summery. A lot of the site was visited but a fair proportion had to be left for another day as we ran out of time and energy. The familiar photogenic features were well photographed (The Palladian Bridge, The Temple Of British Worthies to name but two). Refreshment was sought in the cafÊ, and the day was considered to be a great success. So much so, we have chosen another day out for August, when we hope to visit another National Trust property, Anglesey Abbey near Cambridge. The dahlias should be out and so provide more targets for our cameras. Incidentally, if you follow the official signs to Stowe Gardens from the A43 after Towcester you end up going for miles off -track and through villages, or you get lost. Much better to go the "old" way, which is to keep on the A43, turn off to Silverstone Circuit, keep on to Dadford, and Stowe appears on your left. Much quicker - that's the way we came home having tried the "official" route on the way there.

For August five of the group went to Anglesey Abbey near Cambridge. The weather was mixed, with light drizzle, cloud, occasional sunshine and blue skies. Most of the time the conditions were perfect for photographing flowers. Strong sunshine is not flattering to images of flowers. Softer light is required to show all the delicate detail without blockedup shadows and burned-out highlights. The lack of a strong breeze also helps to keep the flowers still. The dahlias were beginning to blossom and so provided plenty of subject material, as did the moorhens on the mill race and the flowers in the herbaceous garden. A visit to the house, a quick lesson in the use of fill-in flash and macro photography, a meal in the restaurant, and a visit to the shop on the way out - a recipe for a very successful day. Safe Driving — Drivers unprepared for a host of rule changes on the roads in 2015, warns IAM

Safe Driving — continued A new scheme in London will be introduced later this year on 1 September that ensures all lorries and construction vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are fitted with basic safety equipment.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning people to be ready for a host of changes coming up in driving laws in the UK – and fear many are totally unaware of what’s in store in 2015.

The Safer Lorry Scheme, which will be enforced by the Metropolitan Police, City of London Police and the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency, will aim to tackle the number of fatal collisions involving cyclists and pedestrians. The scheme will run 24 hours a day across the city and any drivers found in charge of a non-compliant vehicle may be issued with a £50 penalty notice and a potential £1000 fine at the Magistrates Court.

New regulations that have changed driving licences, drug-drive limits and speed limits have already taken place in 2015. There are, however, other changes expected to take place later in the year. For motorists oblivious to these changes, the IAM is raising awareness to ensure all road users understand the new driving laws and changes. In March a new law on driving under the influence of legal or illegal drugs including cannabis and cocaine and prescription drugs including diazepam, methadone and morphine came into force across England and Wales.

Upcoming changes to driving laws will also see smoking in cars carrying children under the age of 18 becoming illegal from 1 October. Potential fines and penalties are expected to be announced closer to the time.

Earlier this month, the IAM revealed the true scale of drug-driving since the new regulations started and found 902 arrests have already been made by police forces. Motorists convicted of drug-driving will get a minimum one year driving ban, unlimited fine, up to six months imprisonment and a criminal record.

Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer said: “This year has seen some of the biggest changes in motoring procedures we have ever seen. It is very important drivers and riders are fully up-to-date on what is happening – they will affect everyone in one way or another. So don’t get caught out, get informed.”

In April, the speed limit for the largest heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) travelling on a single carriageway across England and Wales increased from 40mph to 50mph, and on a dual carriageway it has increased from 50mph to 60mph.

From the government’s launch of the ‘Make a Plea’ service in March, which enables motorists charged with minor motoring offences including speeding, failing to identify the driver or using a vehicle without insurance to respond to the charges made against them digitally, to the scrapping of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) paper counterpart of the photo card on 8 June, in which all driver information such as endorsements and which category of vehicles you are entitled to drive is stored electronically – the changes have allowed motorists to access information remotely. Important changes have also come into force with how motorists provide proof of their driving records to a third party and will need to obtain a special code from online to allow sharing of data.

Singing For Pleasure —

Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group has been going for well over two years and it continues to thrive. We meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Our sessions are normally free as we usually have the use of ASDA’s Training Room free of charge. When that is not available we use a member’s house. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. Occasionally we have a guest speaker for conversation sessions who is a Spanish lady and former teacher. Having accepted two new students who all have previous experience of the language, we are almost at full capacity. However, we would possibly be able to take one more student but because of the level our members are at, a new student would need to have a reasonable knowledge of the Spanish language.

Group A Singing in the Rain After a last rehearsal before the summer (?? - it was wet all day) break , we betook ourselves to The Lawns for a delicious fish 'n' chip lunch organised by Margaret and June. Many, many thanks, ladies. A good time was had by all, though no croquet on the lawn, alas. The new "term" begins on September 4th with a run through in the morning and a return to The Lawns to sing for the residents that afternoon. Good news is that Carol, who was intending to stand down, now she no longer has a piano :(, may be persuaded to play on provided we can find her a suitable keyboard! Group B They heard the breeze in the trees / Singin' strange melodies,/ And they made that/ The start of the blues! Well, the start of a second group anyway; the "blues" bit we'll come to. Owing to the gratifying popularity of SfP "A", we now have a goodly enough number of would-be singers to make viable a second group, with room for more. Group "B" will be meeting fortnightly, in the Timpson Lounge at Fuller, on Friday mornings from 10 am to 11.45 am, starting on the 25th of September. (Group "A" meets on the alternate Fridays.) So far, so good. The "blue note" is that we are desperate for an accompanist - pianist preferred, but we'd be grateful for any person/s proficient on any musical instrument. If you can but bash out the tune with one hand we'd still like to hear from you. For any further information, or if you fancy joining us for a good sing contact Mary.

Theatre Goers — National AND THEN THERE WERE NONE A group of ten theatre goers recently went to the Milton Keynes Theatre to see “And then there were none” written by Agatha Christie. Based on the nursery rhyme “Ten little soldier boys” it is set in 1939 and takes place on an isolated island off the coast of Devon. Seven of the individuals are guests plus the butler and his wife and the secretary to the host all arrive. Once they have settled in, they hear a recording that accuses them all of committing a murder for which they have not been punished. They are all horrified to hear their names together with details of the victims and how they were murdered. They all, of course, say they are innocent, but they also realise that none has have ever met the individual who invited/employed them and that they are all there to die. On the mantelpiece are statues of ten little soldiers, and as the individuals are murdered, another little soldier is removed. They search the whole island but soon realise that they are alone, that no-one is going to come and save them and that the murderer is one of them. But who is it? You will have to go and see it yourself to find out. There was an excellent cast with a number of well known actors including Susan Penhaligon, Paul Nicholas, John Buchanan, Fraser Hines. Compared to modern murder mysteries, Agatha Christie’s plays are a little slow but we were all engrossed trying to see if we could spot the murderer removing the little soldiers. We were not successful but the sleuths among us correctly guessed who the killer was. A very enjoyable afternoon and a play certainly worth going to see. 12

Billy Flynn. As you will see, the price stated is the actual ticket price. The theatre had capped the number of concessionary tickets and at the time of booking that number had already been sold. Hence this full price.

Walking Group Welcome back Keith and congratulations on completing your walk from Land's End to John o' Groats.

Water Colour Painting Classes - start again on 10th September 2015 in the Parish Church Rooms, Sheep Street, Kettering from 1.45 pm to 3.45 pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, with free parking next to these rooms. Should the car park happen to be full, then the church grounds may be used. Dates for the Autumn Term are:September October November December

(New classes for the Winter Term will start on 14th January 2016). The following picture is called "Bishop's Palace, Bath�, and is painted in water colour by Hazel Britton. The rest of us faced a much lesser challenge when we set off for our August walk from The Wharf Inn at Welford on the 6 mile walk known as the Reservoir Walk. We walked between Welford and Sulby Reservoirs, then across the fields to Sibbertoft. In Sibbertoft we passed a large group of walkers from the Northampton Ramblers doing the walk in the opposite direction. We stopped at Sibbertoft Church for a short break which was very welcome, as the morning turned out quite sunny. Our return to Welford took us back across more wheat fields and through a small wood. Luckily the combines were always a safe distance away! After crossing the Welford Road, the last part of the walk took us along the banks of the Warwickshire Avon and back to The Wharf for welcome refreshments. The September walk will be on Wednesday 2nd September starting from The Bell Inn at Gumley and heading to Laughton Hills. Lunch can be pre ordered from 10am and the walk will start at 10.15am prompt. Walking Group - In Memory of Joan Ogley Keith's End to End (Lands End to John O'Groats) raised ÂŁ3,013.08 Joan spent the last couple of weeks of her life in Cransley Hospice where she was able to live in comfort and dignity. She, myself and my daughters and grand-daughter were treated, throughout this terrible time, with care and compassion. It is important to me that this service continues to be provided to the local community. Last year I walked the Coast to Coast Path in support of this charity but still feel that there is more I should do whilst still physically able so have set myself a bigger challenge, which I hope all readers will support. Writers Group & Writers Too The Parish Rooms being otherwise needed, the Group enjoyed the hospitality of Elizabeth Brassington, and shared the wide variety of pieces members had produced for the session. There was scope for much interesting and informative discussion, including a consideration of the opening section of T S Eliot's Burnt Norton. The topic was "A [something] Summer": Elizabeth Toseland's aptly seasonable prose-poem appears below - a harvest of words and appeals to the senses. The Anthology is now ready for printing; I hope to have copies ready for sale shortly. The topic for next time for both Writers and Writers Too, is to choose a colour, then think of a wordassociation - eg blue moon, in the pink, green with envy, khaki drill or whatever - and make of your choice what you will. September sessions will be at the usual venues. We still have room for more in W.Too, so for more information contact Mary Wildman... They see grow red the TOMATOES. They thin, they transplant the LEEKS. They slice, they consume the CUCUMBERS. But they know the Gardening Summer will end. Ahead lies the Long British Winter.
