You Know You Are In Tanzania When…

Anyone on the streets welcomes you for food. “Karibu Chakula” It doesn’t matter if you are a stranger. Everyone gets hungry and we love to share our meal When you get chatty with a person who just smiled at you. Tanzanians are very friendly people and just with few exchange of words you can find yourself feeling very comfortable. It could be a Masai, your safari guide or the bar tender at the lodge. It is always a good idea to learn some Swahili in between your conversation.

Sipping "madafu" by the beach. Did you notice the tall palm trees during your beach holiday? Then taste some tender coconut, a refreshing mandatory drink, a perfect cooler for your tropical holiday. Trigger warning: If you have one, you might just want to drink two or more every day. Not to worry. It is very healthy! Find yourself walking barefoot. Some say it’s a therapy; some simply love the natural surface they walk on. Who needs shoes when you can feel the sand and the natural wooden platform? Travelers are truly inspired by the local lifestyle that takes you back to the roots. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wrapped in a Masai shuka and sipping some wine facing endless green views. Not fearing the elephant anymore. From the time you came as a tourist, you may have had apprehensions about the giant. The figure and looks may fear you And in a few days… You wait for the elephant to pass by your tent, play with its calf, splashing mud or scratching the gigantic baobab tree. You know you will miss the special Big Five of Tanzania but you know, you came as a tourist but you are going back home as a family. This is the spell binding effect of Tanzania. Come Experience the Swahili Magic.

Brave 7 Year Old

MONTANNAH

Scales Mt. Kilimanjaro

ahead of their trek. This emotional journey has made Montannah achieve a new record of being the youngest female to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The young girl was accompanied by her mother Hollie Kenney, 45, who is a swimming coach. She added: “I was very real with her, explaining that people can get very sick, that we’d have to train very hard and it wouldn’t be an easy task.'

Here is why… While the world has seen all sorts of record-breaking achievers on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania hosted a very special person on Uhuru peak on 8th April. Petite Texas girl made a wishful determination to visit Kilimanjaro and despite knowing how daunting the climbing journey could be, she said ‘it was getting only easier’ as she went higher. While you may wonder what the real motivation to be so gleeful, we were too surprised of her enthusiasm. Montannah's father passed away in 2013, few weeks after her 3rd Birthday. 'The higher I go, the closer I am to him in heaven,' Montannah told the Austin American-Statesman,

Hollie further adds, “when being above the clouds, she immediately associated that with heaven and it resonated with her,'. “She loved that idea of being closer to her dad and asked me if she was going to be able to see him.” Upon asking Montannah what she felt about the climb, she said, "I wanted to be closer with my dad. I wanted to do fun adventures with my mom and learn about Mt. Kilimanjaro." Despite not having any nearby mountains to climb in Austin, Hollie, a former professional triathlete, said they were already in decent shape before deciding to make the trip. They trained by doing hours-long hikes on weekends and shorter ones during the school week. "We couldn't do any altitude training, but we are not in area for that," Hollie said. "She was in good shape with running, swimming and basketball. We spent a lot of time hiking."

Unforgettable Swahili Memories to Take Back Home Are you wondering what would you take back home after a blissful holiday in Tanzania? Have a look at some of these adorable gifts you will love to buy.

ZANZIBARI DOORS The detailed wooden doors of Stone Town have the cultural roots of Zanzibar. The mÊlange of Swahili, Arab, and Indian traditions is evident in the design of Zanzibar doors. If you look close enough, these giant doors tell stories of the residents’ social status, religion, and profession. After you have learnt about the history of these doors while touring around Stone Town, you are sure to pick a memento and a Zanzibari door will certainly add to your charming souvenir collection.

KITENGE Flamboyant and comfortable, you will envy all the designs and colors adored on local people. Kitenge is a local East African fabric often stitched into skirts and dresses for women and shirts for men. Besides the patterns and colors, the cloth is very comfortable and goes easy with tropical climate of Tanzania. Ready made kitenge outfits are hard to find but you can always tailor one at a local shop.

LITTLE MASAI During your safari, you are likely to meet the tall, lean and the most authentic people of Tanzania, none other than the Masai. While it is always fun chatting, interacting and trying the tall Masai jump, there are many stunning souvenirs that will keep the loving masai in your thoughts and right by your side. Ever seen the Masai candles, key rings, masai, cloth piee or statues. These adorable pieces are light weight and easy to carry. TANZANIA ON A CANVAS Tinga Tinga paintings are part of the Ndonde mural art tradition. The Ndonde people decorate their huts with various pictures of animals and figures until today. However the artistic style became famous when one of the members of the Ndonde tribe, Edward Saidi Tingatinga came to the city of Dar es Salaam in sixties of the last century. Today you can buy Tinga Tinga paintings exclusively from Oysterbay which has the legacy of a bunch of trained professional artists. From wildlife imitations to people and abstract art, one can never go back without buying adorable paintings from this market.
