Gianni Ghizzoni, President, Eumabois shares with FDM Asia about Eumabois’ promotional activities and how it is actively shaping the industry through standardisation. By Goh Tz’en Long.

StandardsOf Excellence Eumabois seems to be actively involved with a lot of exhibitions. Can you tell us more about Eumabois’ activities? Eumabois takes care of various subjects beside exhibitions. One of the main areas is technical subjects. In Europe, we are involved, together with the Presidency and the Secretariat of TC 142 in Brussels, in the standardisation of woodworking machinery. This is a very important job and of course it is our duty to do it, to set the standard for woodworking machinery. Also on the technical side, we have issued, last year, a new terminology for woodworking machinery. We have translated it in many different languages including Chinese and Russian. Also, we have tried to collect statistical information on production, because on export it is rather easy, for they are available all over the world, but production statistics is different. So we are trying to involve all the associations in Europe and also extra European associations. Production statistics is very important in order to have the real picture of the

production of woodworking machinery in the world so everybody knows what is the position for us. The technical nomenclature is for everybody in woodworking machinery, not only the Europeans, because as I said they are translated into Chinese, Russian, Arabic and many other languages. It gives a common way of calling the machines, and also in catalogues in all the exhibitions, they have common terminology. It is terminology Eumabois issued that has been studied speciﬁcally by experts in our sector.

Eumabois has endorsed certain exhibitions. Can you tell us the basis for deciding on which shows to endorse? We try to endorse exhibitions according to the needs of our industry and we look at the organiser and what kind of promotions they do. We look at the cost of the exhibition space and the services also. And we try to promote these exhibitions in order to create important events, in order to give guidelines to our members,

because sometimes, for instance in China, there are so many exhibitions that our members are really confused.

the market at a certain level. High level (technology), they can still sell, but at the low level, it is very difﬁcult to compete with the Chinese because of pricing.

Can you tell us about efforts to protect intellectual property rights?

Can you tell us about your work with the Wood Technology Club?

We have asked the organiser of the exhibition that we sponsor to put in the general rules of the exhibition, some information about counterfeiting. We didn’t go very deeply into the matter because we are not in a position to approach legal matters, but we put in a general note stating that counterfeiting can be sued so everybody knows, in case anybody takes action against them during the exhibition, they know that they were informed in advance.

The Wood Technology Club is an informal European and extra-European wood association and we meet practically once a year. Once in Italy, and once in Hannover in Germany and occasionally somewhere in the world. We had an informal meeting in Bangalore in India last February. And again, we are trying to keep in touch with the whole world of woodworking machinery and trying to ﬁnd subjects which are of common interest. And of course one of the very important subjects which is of common interest is statistics and exchange of opinion about exhibitions. We are also trying to put up something also as far as the material wood is concerned. We want to try to promote wood in order to show the market that we are not the ones just cutting the trees but trying to protect them. FDM

Can you tell us the market potential of the woodworking industry in China as compared to Eastern Europe? Well of course the market potential is huge. There is also a huge industry on woodworking machinery in China and the Europeans, they have a some difﬁculty in penetrating
