transformable narratives

generated out of the grid of savannah, ga the matrix harnesses the community created from a series of squares. becoming the main access, the abstracted squares extend into a manufactured grid facilitating multiple possibilities. in this instance we celebrate the life of an elder hermit. having spent years alone building his community of solitude, he initiates a journey back to civilization; as a youth he left his crumbling city in search of a solution. upon entering the city for the first time in decades he faces a once grand tower now resting on only one support. once representing an accomplished city, it now stood for tyranny. collapsing the final support, with his last breath the elder man abolishes tyranny.

meditative speculations questioning the nature of experiencing light, the meditative space marries experience and ritual with the natural and scientific. through manipulating experience as it relates to the natural world surrounding, chaos transforms into the phenomilogical. placing a simple geometric form, raised from the site to protect sacred ground, so that it aligns with the path of the sun, the occupant discovers a serendipitous connection between the natural and explicitly man made. in the primary chamber the occupant is fully immerged in the connection between nature and structure. having fully escaped the reality outside he enters into a matrix of meditation chambers where the existence of light stands alone. in the absence of all other things, the occupant frees his mind. upon exiting the matrix of chambers, the occupant becomes instantaneously immersed in the natural world that lies beyond the structure. following the depletion of this reality its pleasures become overwhelming.

siting between two existing buildings, our site exists at the main point of circulation for the usf cypress apartments. focusing on the revitalization of exiting rituals at the ground level, rudimentary spaces arise. following a concept of filtration, activity on the ground floor resumes as previous now magnified by the transition upward into spaces purposed for student community (a matrix of study areas and student lounges). dividing the program into two visual masses, each is pulled apart allow a moment of circulation with in the void as well as a series of overlapping views.

engagingthe corner Revealing a distant vista, the corner unfolds allowing habitation. Fulfilling its purpose as a place for gathering, as the corner pulls away its focus turns to the view. Enhancing the site through the details of the architecture, the foundation hovers as it emerges from the sloped landscape; a massive column of earth seemingly acts as structure. Holding its own character all elements connect only through a soft connection; it is as though the corner is pulling apart. |27

rediscoving precident

exploring a new realm of multi-media, i began to wonder how i would apply the concepts of architecture. asking myself how the viewer can engage the film, i organized a series of viewings where the viewer, knowing their succession, is filmed. broken into three groups of six, each viewer shares a similar reaction amongst their group. in the begging the viewer finds confusion in the unfinished film; enjoying the upbeat soundtrack one viewer employs a random act of dance. in the reactions that follow confusion turns to laughter and then to discomfort as upon seeing multiple reactions they reach the realization that their reaction is next.

recording the layering of interaction, sand takes the place of multimedia in the spatial realm. in the rehabilitation of an abandoned military bunker both meditation and gathering harness function; the space transforms creating a small writing studio and social space. the introduction of sand generates a transition from the distraction of the surrounding environment into a meditative space of concentration. consequent to minor openings in the walls, allowing light to penetrate while limiting view, as well as the introduction of an exterior space beyond the threshold of entry, a place for meditative concentration finds completion. |33

more than establishing boundary, the wall gains moments of habitation through the fluctuation of its elements. its purpose the connection between two points (a facility for book storage and a reading room), the journeys along and through the wall lead to a serendipitous discovery of spaces renewed upon each revisit; a level of interaction leads to new means of discovery. splitting the journey into two main paths, the user elects to either pass through the wall, experiencing a view of the waterfront and the discovery new spaces through the observation of others, or to journey around the wall, discovering a communal space of concentration engaging the endless views of forest.

entering from collins ave, a passage to ocean dr moves upward in elevation overlooking a sunken workspace establishing boundary for the craftsman as well as creating a serendipitous experience for passersby. exemplifying the experience of scale, colossal light wells will be erected to house the finish components of the glider. a hydraulic wall backs each of the light wells, allowing the components to be removed in addition becoming a benchmark marking a celebratory launch of the glider. live | creating a place to reside centered on inspiration, the living quarters provide both privacy and the luxury of collaboration while adapting to the south beach atmosphere. sharing a common living space the residence will enjoy a series of views as well as various connections to their environment stimulating a variety of senses. eat | la sandwichrie, an iconic south beach sandwich shop finds a perfect fit in the newly charged alleyway. unlike other restaurants, la sandwhichrie bring gourmet to grab n’ go. adjacent to the main passage, the enticing aromas will leave no one passing through without sandwich in hand. interact | a rhythmic series of walls, each a blank canvas for street art, align to create an outdoor gallery. Also acting as a secondary gallery for the visiting artist, the wall of street art creates a characteristic backdrop in the heart of south beach.

Becoming the vessel through which we journey from the surface to the river, the boathouse is a space of transition. Preserving the existing site conditions, the earth is lifted to allow program exist beneath. Bringing light downward, a series of light wells are the only structures holing the seemingly hovering mass of earth. The characteristic of each protrusion of light reflect the user of the space generating a sublime sense of connection. Upon approaching the boathouse, the user may either elect to journey downward towards the locker rooms preparing to continue out to the riverside boat storage, or they may choose the path upwards into a green space overlooking the river and downtown.

interactive structure

exploringrefuge among the covered pools structure gives homage to interaction, folding down to respect the transition into the water; to one side the structure services passage and to the other interaction through folding to become a seating condition. centered around the concept of resort, each space within the natatorium harnesses a notion of place; from the profane experience of diving from the roof to the therapeutic pleasure of the naturally shaded pools overlooking downtown tampa.

holding emotions independent of the “utopian” feel that the highline generates, the multi-story cabinet of curiosity splits into two masses; the first respecting its adjacency to the elevated park seducing occupants of the highline to pass through, the second establishing its individuality standing apart though generating a courtyard of transition. positioned in an “up and coming” neighborhood, the highline museum allows flexibility giving it the capacity to generate opportunity. provided through boundary and redirection a colossal screen abstracted from the cross section of a bird bone allows the flexibility of the multiple entries characteristic to the museums site along the highline.
