CPS energy Headquarters LOCATION: San Antonio, TX TEAM: SmithgroupJJR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design of the New Headquarters for CPS Energy will speak to the company’s commitment to serving the energy needs of its customers as well as its commitment to being a vital partner and member of San Antonio. One of the project’s main design drivers is the creation of accessible public and semi public space and amenities that will engage the street, and become a part of San Antonio’s public urban fabric. Bolstered by a host of sustainable features, both passive and active, the building’s performance will reflect the CPS’s dedication to sustainability. The architecture draws references from not only its immediate context, but also the strong regional influences of Central Texas. While establishing a clear and strong identity for CPS, the design will be memorable not as a monument , but rather another iconic piece of San Antonio’s emerging downtown.

Massing The tower and garage are placed on the center of the site. The efficient form is a derivative of the program that is housed within.

6

public space The tower is pushed to the north edge of the site to confront the street, and the garage is pulled to the south to allow for public green space.

connectivity The tower is pulled off of the ground plane to allow direct access from the street to the newly created greenspace.

series of terraces The program that makes up the auditorium, cafe, conference space, and boardrooms is pulled out of the tower and down to levels 1 and 2 creating a series of terraces that serve CPS as well as the community.

Sustainability Solar shading devices are employed to the south, east, and west sides of the tower to minimize solar gain. The garage is fitted with solar PV panels to maximize optimal sunlight exposure.

Terminal 3 Modernization LOCATION: Phoenix, AZ TEAM: Corgan / SmithgroupJJR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The T3 Modernization Project at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a $560M multifirm collaborative renovation/expansion. The aspirational vision is to achieve a ‘World Class Facility’ through comprehensive renovations to the Central Processor and North Concourse, and the addition of a new 15 gate South Concourse. The Terminal Processor features a new West expansion that will create a new modern vocabulary, forge a new airport landmark, and establish itself as the new Terminal 3 front door. T3 Modernization Goals and Objectives. 1. Create a “world class” facility with identity that sets the standard for passenger experience at the world’s friendliest airport. 2. Create value that supports the economic engine of Sky Harbor driving commerce and the economy of Phoenix and the region. 3. Create a performance focused facility that maximizes operational efficiency while being flexible and adaptable to changing needs. 4. Create a modern and sustainable facility embracing Phoenix’s unique sense of place introducing passengers to our culture and our desert environment. 12

13

Specific to the Terminal 3 Modernization Project are three main design opportunities: first, the vision of a World Class Facility, which encapsulates our understanding of a cutting edge, industry leading facility. Second is the facility’s unique location, the Place, responding to Phoenix’s culture and community, progressive architecture, sustainable desert building techniques, and anticipated economic capabilities. And third, the existing facility as part of a larger holistic campus, Existing Canvas, with opportunities to create identity, incorporate PSHIA’s aviation legacy, and connection to alternate modes of transportation as the design moves forward. 14

15

Moving people efficiently and effortlessly to and from their destination is also a focus of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The new facility will maximize performance and operational efficiency, while remaining flexible and adaptable to future needs and changes.

hayden flour mill LOCATION: Tempe, AZ TEAM: SmithgroupJJR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Hayden Flour Mill redevelopment will turn the abandoned, historic mill into a vibrant community gateway to Mill Avenue. This iconic landmark will celebrate its history through careful redevelopment to not only become one of the most anticipated mixed use projects in Tempe, but will be a catalyst for future growth in the City. Hayden Flour Mill is located just south of Tempe Town lake, backs up to the Hayden Butte preserve, and features an abandoned 4 story mill building as well as a 12 story silo tower. The four story office building fronting Mill Avenue will turn into a restaurant and retail venue with hotel amenities and a rooftop lounge overlooking the Town Lake park and Mill Avenue while boutique hotel rooms are to be situated into the former silos. A new 5 level hotel structure will serve as the hotel entry lobby, restaurant, conference space, as well as feature 4 levels of rooms over a second floor amenity pool deck.

Barrister place LOCATION: Phoenix, AZ TEAM: SmithgroupJJR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The redevelopment of the Barrister Building and the properties to the East and South presents an opportunity to create a vibrant mixed use project which will serve as a cornerstone to Downtown Phoenix. The design approach will celebrate the beautiful historic elements of the Barrister Building, while looking forward to the future of downtown Phoenix. Barrister Place will consist of 88 condominiums. 63 brand new units are located in two, mid-rise buildings, which will flank the historic Barrister Building to the east and to the south, as well as 25 exposed-brick lofts in the Barrister Building itself. The Barrister Building will receive a sensitive face lift and be repurposed for people that want to live in a truly historic edifice with a legendary film-making past. Both the new and historic structures at Barrister Place will be programmed for “local first retail and restaurant tenants at the street level

Terminal redevelopment LOCATION: Classified TEAM: Corgan / SmithgroupJJR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Currently, a major airline’s operation is split between two outdated concourses in a heavily congested area of an airport. This only permits a small number of wide body aircraft as well as a limited number of passengers and routes served. The redevelopment of the two existing terminals can increase service by 40% and offer a greater airport experience to customers. With the proposed design of the two new terminals, and the connecting Processor, there is an opportunity to solidify and establish a new gateway at the airport. The Design will embody a unique vision that represents the company’s culture, commitment to the region and customer service.

36

37

38

The proposed design will be transparent and open, and will provide a sense of connectivity to passengers, from curbside to airside. Transparency will allow abundant day light to wash the halls of the grand processing hall as well as the holding rooms of the terminals. Additionally, the transparency will allow views out to the mountains and iconic skyline to provide a unique traveling experience.

campus vista historic remodel LOCATION:: Phoenix, AZ TEAM: Tyler Neal Kuenzi Design PROJECT DESCRIPTION: W. Earll Dr. was a a complete interior remodel and exterior refresh of a 1,300 SF home built in 1945. Located in the Campus Vista Historical district the renovation sought to open up the cramped floor plan, wash the interior of the home with light, and bring the home up to date while still maintaining much of the original 1940’s ranch essence. A 500 SF master bedroom and bathroom addition transformed this once dark and neglected home into the gem of the neighborhood. FRONT BEFORE
