A select lineup of 14 curated performances, this season features some of the most exciting new creations from around the world including bold projects from both established and emerging performance-makers. We are delighted to welcome back iconic artists and companies who have not been to Austin in recent years, including world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the celebrated Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Texas Performing Arts is home to the most extensive educational collection of Hollywood motion picture backdrops in the world. Comprised of 68 backings, the Hollywood Backdrop Collection includes original works from iconic and celebrated films such as The Sound of Music (20th Century Fox 1965), Ben Hur (MGM 1959), and North by Northwest (MGM 1958). Generously donated to Texas Performing Arts by J.C. Backings and the Art Directors Guild Archives’ Backdrop Recovery Project, the collection is a living legacy of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Thanks to TPA supporters Susan and Robert Morse this unique collection is now available worldwide in an easy-touse, mobile friendly website. Both visual gallery and teaching archive, this all-new online resource will amplify the legacy of largely forgotten visual artists and engage educators, researchers and cinephiles in new and exciting ways.

Take a Bow! Austin’s own Langston Lee Wins National Jimmy Award

In June the most talented teenagers from across the country took the stage at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City for the 14th National High School Musical Theatre Awards®, better known as the Jimmys. Among them, two Austinarea students, Langston Lee and Kyra Carr had the opportunity to compete on the Broadway stage with 94 other nominees.

This annual awards event is a coast-tocoast celebration of outstanding student achievement recognizing individual artistry in vocal, dance, and acting performance. Both Langston and Kyra are winners of the 2023 Heller Awards for Young Artists for leading roles in their high school musicals. This was the first year that Heller winners could compete at the national level, thanks to a partnership with Texas Performing Arts, a member of the Broadway League. At the end of an unforgettable evening of show-stopping performances, the top honor of Best Performance by an Actor was awarded to Langston.

But the Jimmys is not only an awards event, it’s a once-in-lifetime opportunity for the students to learn what it takes to build a performing arts career through coaching sessions, training, and rehearsals led by some of Broadway’s most accomplished professionals.

Nurturing homegrown talent and guiding and supporting the next generation of artists is central to TPA's mission and we could not be happier for Langston, Kyra, and all of the nominees. Bravo!

Backstage after their 2018 debut show in their adopted hometown of New York City, Shahzad Ismaily asked Arooj Aftab and Vijay Iyer to huddle together and reflect on what had just occurred. “We felt it from the first moment,” remembers Iyer. “We were mystified and almost silent and said: I don’t know what just happened. But we should do that again.” They hadn’t prepared material in advance; the potent chemistry surprised even these seasoned collaborators. A shared focus on collective real-time creation allowed them to weave the bass, piano, and vocals into a breathtakingly unified sound. This was music in the moment. Words couldn’t define it, but the audience felt it, and joined the emotional journey. Staying open to spontaneous co-creation became the band’s defining approach in the half dozen shows they played before recording their debut album. Individually, their accolades are substantial – vocalist Arooj Aftab, the first Pakistani to win a Grammy, wows audiences worldwide with her mesmerizing live shows; MacArthur genius and Grammy nominee Vijay Iyer is one of today’s most influential pianists; multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily’s sensitivity and technical acumen has made him a legend among musicians like the late Lou Reed for whom he was a session player. Yet the marvel here is how ego disappears as the three players merge to create a singular, gorgeous sound.

One key factor is how Aftab employs her otherworldly voice as another instrument in the ensemble. “I’m mostly using the words to get the sound out,” she says. “I’m not thinking about telling a story.” The voice-aswind-instrument gels with the synth/keys combination of Iyer and Ismaily that flow together like sunlight and shadow.

More broadly, by trusting in real-time creation – and each other – the band is able to cross-pollinate spontaneity with the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime in music. As Ismaily puts it, “I feel like we’re subtly cueing listeners to say, Live like this.”

Love In Exile. Three world-class musicians meet in New York City to forge a singular voice that takes their distinct backgrounds and vast histories of collaboration as a starting point. From there they explore one-of-a-kind performances defined by a sense of timeless beauty and sudden surprise alike.

Lila Downs is one of the most influential artists in Latin America. She has one of the most unique voices in the world and is known for her charismatic performances. Her own compositions often combine genres and rhythms as diverse as Mexican rancheras and Corridos, Boleros, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Cumbia, and Folklore. Her music often focuses on social justice, immigration, and women’s issues.

Lila sings in Spanish, English, and various native languages such as Zapoteco, Mixteco, Nahuatl, Maya, and Purépecha. She has recorded duets with artists as diverse as Mercedes Sosa, Caetano Veloso, Juanes, Norah Jones, YoYo Ma, Juan Gabriel, Carla Morrison, Natalia Lafourcade, Santana, The Chieftains, Niña Pastori, Esteman, Soledad, Diego el Cigala, Aída Cuevas, Toto La Momposina, La Santa Cecilia and Bunbury. Chavela Vargas proclaimed Lila as her successor. Her extensive repertoire has allowed her to sing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, and The UNAM Symphony in México, as well

as with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has given concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Hollywood Bowl (USA), Teatro Colón (Argentina), Auditorio Nacional and Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. She was invited by Barack Obama to sing at the White House and has appeared at the Oscars for her role in the film Frida. Her music has also been included in various other feature films such as The Counselor, Tortilla Soup, Real Women Have Curves, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Fados, Mariachi Gringo, and Hecho en México.

Lila Downs has just released her fourteenth album called La Sánchez, produced by Orlando Aispuro, a guitarist and producer from Hermosillo, Sonora, who has collaborated with artists such as Carín León, C. Tangana, and Matisse. This album is heavily influenced by the music from the north of Mexico and seeks to raise awareness about important matters, such as maternal recognition, compositions in times of pandemic, the vicissitudes of sentimental and social relationships, and a journey through mourning.

Lila has graced the stages of many of the world’s most prestigious festivals and venues including annual sold-out residencies at Auditorio Nacional, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall,

and the Hollywood Bowl. She has been invited to sing at the White House and performed on both the Academy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards telecasts. Her music has also been included in several feature films such as Tortilla Soup and Real Women Have Curves. Lila has 2 million social media followers and over 180 million views on YouTube.
