Bandwidth and Training
Bandwidth in this context is referring to the amount of electronic data that can be transferred from one point to another in a specific time. Bandwidth was initially expressed and measured as bits per second (bps). Today bandwidth is measured in Mbps or (Megabits per second). Some speeds even measure in Gbps (gigabits per second) and even Tbps (Terabits per second). To oversimplify this discussion, think of bandwidth as water flowing through a pipe. The larger the pipe, the more product can freely flow or be pushed.
As users transition to web browser-based applications, one of the problems they must deal with is internet speed. Few things frustrate a computer user, like buffering. Buffering might occur when a user attempts to open a video file, like streaming a movie.
Relevance to water and wastewater industry? Most plants have computers that are tied into a network. Some may be a stand-alone unit. Both might have remote monitoring and work applications running. Things like SCADA are used to monitor pressures, start and stop pumps and motors, etc. Then someone might say it would be great to monitor the plant access or keep an eye on the events occurring at the plant, so several high-definition security cameras are added.
A pandemic event occurs, and required operator training goes from live instructor lead classroom events to computer-based training events. The operator/staff needs training, so the supervisor says, sign up Billy Bob for a 20-hour computer class, and he can use one of the desks with a computer workstation at the treatment plant.
Billy Bob comes to the plant for class, and there is enough bandwidth available to access a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.), and he does all that is needed to arrange for the class. Perhaps the following morning, Billy Bob shows up, signs in, and access the training provider’s web address provided in the registration process. Shortly after that, the supervisor uses his laptop to make adjustments through SCADA. And someone pulls up at the gate, and the lead operator wants to take a closer look, so he accesses the security cameras. Another operator is preparing and submitting TCEQ reports. Poor Billy Bob now begins experiencing “Buffering,” or his screen freezes, and he either only has audio, or the electronic class stops altogether.
Billy Bob is now frustrated and calls the training provider and says he is experiencing issues. The Training Provider verifies equipment, monitors the electronic classroom, and sees Billy Bob is the only student expressing concerns about buffering or choppy video. What Billy Bob does not want to hear is, that the problem seems to be on the user’s side or end. Meaning there is not enough internet bandwidth available at the plant to support all the applications that are running and fighting for bandwidth.
Some entities have IT departments and staff support. In some cases, it is not a big problem for the IT staff to dedicate more resources to the treatment plant. Small systems and individuals are left to face the internet concerns on their own.
The main point of this discussion is that plants, offices, and facilities should review their internet needs and capabilities. If the internet load justifies, make plans to address the current and potential internet needs.
TWUA has several steps in place to monitor attendance, participation, and comprehension, so for some allowing the worker to attend class from home could be an option? For TWUA, as long as you have a laptop with internet capabilities, a standard browser, and a telephone, you can attend class.
Internet bandwidth is one of the possible reasons for buffering; you also have resource allocation on the PC, which are influenced by which programs are open and/or running in the background while trying to view the video. Programs use memory (RAM) and require processing time (CPU). If too many programs are open, each one loads into memory and requires additional memory to execute, and every process they spawn requires processor time. When the PC does not have enough memory, it will use the hard disk as temporary storage to be able to execute; this is called SWAPPING. An example of something that will slow down the perceived performance is something like the Anti-Virus Software running in the background and possibly scanning files. Multiple browser windows open at the same time can also contribute. Together with the bandwidth, all of these things will influence your experience when streaming the video.
Help TWUA provide the best electronic learning experience by verifying your internet capabilities.

WIPES IN PIPES WIPES IN PIPES WIPES IN PIPES
With Micro-Solve® microorganisms multiply. This reduces the grease that binds wipes together. Micro-Solve® reduces the risk of contact with disease.

Wipes when flushed and combined with other products and grease that is poured down drains, create "fatbergs". Once they enter the sewer lines, they can accumulate and cause backups, damaging the city's infrastructure.
