Spearheading a new wave of traditional music, Atlantic Arc Orchestra is dedicated to an entirely new, suspense-charged relationship between the traditional and the modern. Through a programme of original, traditional, re-arranged and shared material, the seven members of the ensemble create a powerful fusion that pushes the tradition to the edge of its boundaries in an organic collaboration of Irish, Scottish and English musical ancestry. Deconstructing barriers, while outwardly exploring questions of identity and environment, the seven members have cultivated a unique process of openness and curiosity towards new ‘traditional’ music. The creative process is an improvisational journey of Celtic synergies, its rhythms, melodies and songs. Together these figureheads of the tradition form an extraordinary ensemble for a musically charged experience that redefines brilliance.

NORTH DANNY DIAMOND, CONOR CALDWELL & HELEN DIAMOND

Friday 21 October Doors 8 pm £10 b.y.o.b 26

on their new duo album North, Belfast-born fiddle players Conor Caldwell and Danny Diamond blend shared northern musical heritage with the fruits of further-afield musical adventures to create a landmark contemporary Irish fiddle recording. New compositions sit at ease beside forgotten gems from old manuscript collections; rich fiddle textures drift in and out with fiery melody lines, while careworn tunes learned in childhood are re-imagined and re-arranged. Hailed as “a long-playing delight” in Siobhán Long’s 5 star review for The Irish Times (July 29th 2016), North is the latest in a line of acclaimed contemporary traditional/ folk records to have emerged from the Irish Traditional Music Archive’s Dublin studio, following the likes of Lynched’s Cold Old Fire and Diamond’s 2014 solo debut Fiddle Music. Helen Diamond is a singer and fiddle player from Dublin. She has strong family links with the north of Ireland and from an early age has been drawn to the rich northern tradition of unaccompanied English-language singing, of which she is one of her generation’s leading exponents. Helen’s fiddle playing is influenced most strongly by the music of South-West Donegal, but also takes inspiration from old-time American music. 27

Each falling into different categories but with a beating heart that is inescapably Irish. From the outside they look very different but the blood flowing though their common gaelic veins is music and each boasts world class traditional performers, whose skills were honed in communities full of people who may disagree on almost every subject, but whose shared development in traditional music ensures they are forever linked to the Emerald Isle. 33

MUSICIANS FROM ACROSS IRELAND AND MANCHESTER WILL GATHER FOR THREE DAYS OF PERFORMANCES, WORKSHOPS AND MASTERCLASSES TO SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS AND HELP THE NEXT GENERATION FOSTER THEIR LOVE OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC. 34

For the first time these links will be celebrated over a November weekend with performers from the Diaspora gathering in the Duncairn Centre for Culture and Arts for a series of concerts and workshops. This weekend will lay the foundations for a larger and more ambitious programme that will explore cultural identity and how different communities contribute to and fit within 21st Century Belfast. The music will serve as a backdrop to a wider examination of how different strands of Irishness have developed in each city and different contexts — be it in Dublin where to be Irish comes without question, to Manchester where Irish identity is an important part of a series of other strands of identity that has developed in an English environment. The Irish identity in Belfast has been examined more than anywhere else outside the United States but while the last census showed that just 40 per cent of citizens in the north of Ireland see themselves has having no Irish identity, the rest see themselves as being Irish in varying degrees.

This is perhaps how Belfast has become a centre for traditional music and arts that is the envy of the world. With homegrown international class performers and regular visitors from far and wide, each weekend brings a new opportunity to take in a groundbreaking performance in our world-class venue. This weekend in November will build on that development and work towards establishing the city as an official city of traditional music that will celebrate cultural identity in a way that includes all communities, both old and new. Musicians from across Ireland and Manchester will gather for three days of performances, workshops and masterclasses to showcase their talents and help the next generation foster their love of traditional music.

There already have been flattering comparisons with the likes of David Bowie, Kate Bush & John Grant, but Jack’s unique voice and songwriting flair shine throughout in a sea of eclectic influences. ‘Dream Catcher’ is set for release on September 29th, featuring edgy baroque pop, plaintive ballads and startingly honest refelctions on the world around him.

prints are ever the same. Ink is applied to a plate through a variety of media and then transferred to paper through an etching press. Drypoint is a printmaking process in which a design is drawn on a plate with a sharp, pointed needle-like instrument and then transferred onto paper using an etching press. The soft, feathery lines of drypoint lend themselves to playful illustrations or expressive sketches. Relief printing is the process of creating an image by cutting areas away from a lino or adigraf sheet. The parts of the image that are not to receive ink are carved away from the surface and the remaining area is inked with a roller and then transferred onto paper with a roller or etching press.

ULSTER UNIVERSITY – BELFAST SCHOOL OF ART EXHIBITIONS

NORMA BEGGS – THE SPACE BETWEEN

12.09.16 – 23.09.16 (Painting)

26.09.16 – 07.10.16

7.11.16 – 18.10.16 (Textiles and Fashion)

As part of our ongoing partnership with Ulster University’s Belfast School of Art, we are committed to providing a range of opportunities and support for the best new and emerging artists. This includes graduate residencies in our studios, mentoring and advice, and exhibitions throughout the year.

This exhibition is the culmination of Norma’s participatory photo-textile project engaging with rural and intercultural groups.

We have already hosted the 2nd Year BA Hons Contemporary Applied Art students end of year exhibition, as well as a special selection from a variety disciplines chosen from the work on display at the major end of year exhibition in Belfast Campus, including work selected for the annual RUA show.

Having grown up here in the ‘70s and ‘80’s, this project is inspired by all that happened behind the headlines. The human spirit has both survived and thrived during our troubled past.

The project sought out the personal stories behind the headlines of ‘The Troubles’. Life, memory, art — they’re interconnected.

The two exhibitions in our Autumn and Winter Programme will feature work by a selection of painters and textiles and fashion artists chosen from Belfast School of Art. 70

Through creative reminiscence, photographic images, artifacts and creative consultation, personal accounts of life have been triggered, recorded and informed the new photo-textile pieces created by Norma.

SARAH MAPLE – KEEPING UP WITH THE KAPULETS

GREEN SHOOT PRODUCTIONS

17.10.16 – 28.10.16

21.11.16 – 3.12.16

‘Keeping up with the Kapulets’ is a full episode of ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ acted out in Shakespearean style.

‘1932’ details some of Belfast’s shared heritage, focusing and revealing the story of the Outdoor Relief Strike which was one of the few occasions working class Protestants and Catholics united and achieved a measure of change despite immense opposition from the establishment. And yet this history is virtually forgotten in our public memory. Why? The Exhibition will raise a question as to the impacts of sectarianism on society today and the lessons of organising for lasting change.

Supported by Arts Council England, Sarah Maple completed a BA in Fine Art from Kingston University in 2007 and in the same year won the ‘4 New Sensations’ award for emerging artists, run by The Saatchi Gallery. Sarah’s artwork, film and performances have been exhibited internationally at galleries and institutions including Tate Britain, A.I.R Gallery (NY), AGO (Canada), The New Art Exchange (Nottingham), Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast) and Kunisthoone (Estonia).
