It is a tough industry and I think you have to be very passionate about make-up to survive as its hard work and long hours.
I credit Spob OBrien, Louise Young, Jan Sewell, Kate Benton, Sharon Martin, Mandy Gold and Tanya Noor as make-up designers who have encouraged and supported me to develop as a make-up artist. They are all extremely talented artists who inspire many people and are my role models in the industry. I learn something new on every job and I love that products and methods are constantly evolving. Spob, Sharon, Kate and Jan are leading hair and make-up designers in the UK, they are all creative, focused, hardworking women who are very supportive of their teams. One other make-up artist I should mention is David Horne, who has been a real mentor to me in the last two years. David is an exceptionally creative and innovative make-up artist as well as being an outstanding educator and a voice I listen to as my own business career has developed. How would you define your style… is there a particular period

that influenced you most? In body painting I am inspired by history, fantasy and fairytale and emerges in my work. I work on a variety of films but really enjoy working on period productions and have been fortunate this year to work on Victorian, ‘20s, ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘80s films. I would have to say my favourite period is the 1950s because of icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. I enjoy researching for ideas and gain inspirations from past periods and fashion designers. What do you look for from an assistant? It’s important to be the best assistant you can be. It is a tough industry and I think you have to be very passionate about make-up to survive as its hard work and long hours. I like people who can think on their feet, who can work out what I need without asking. I generally like to get to know the people who become my assistants and they need a good sense of humour and be prepared to work hard. I look for assistants who are professional and well trained, that’s important to me and someone who doesn’t mind making lots of tea.
