Lighten Up On OSU Offensive Coordinator

delivered by

Dear TWIF, Ken, for all the complaining you do about (Ohio State offensive coordinator) Jim Bollman, do you think you could do a better job? I’ve met Bollman at an OSU alumni function and I can tell you that he’s a very good man who has Ohio State’s best interest at heart. If you knew him, you wouldn’t be calling for his head all the time. I know it’s been a tough year offensively for the Buckeyes, but they’ve had to deal with a hurt Beanie Wells and the growing pains of a freshman quarterback. Next year will be completely different, you just watch. Heck, the Buckeyes will still end up 10-2 and go to the Rose Bowl or another BCS bowl this year, so all is not lost.

So lighten up and quit being so critical. GO BUCKS! Roy, Zanesville Dear Roy, I am certain Bollman is a good person, as are all of OSU’s coaches. My job in being analytical of the Buckeye program sometimes calls for being critical, but it never, ever gets personal with me. Let’s face it: The Buckeye offense is atrocious, ranking 97th nationally following the Penn State loss. Though Coach Jim Tressel calls the plays, Bollman oversees the the linemen. And the fact is, OSU has not had an effective offensive line during the Tressel era. Two years ago, the juggernaut

Buckeye offense led by Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith still only ranked 26th nationally. That’s been the highest-ranked offense in Tress’ eight seasons in Columbus. So no, I won’t lighten up about this. The thought of going to the Rose Bowl in a rematch against USC with no offensive game plan and a line that will give up eight sacks is too unbearable a thought. I’d rather play Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl. That game is winnable‌ ..I think. Dear TWIF, What is Mike Brown waiting for? Marvin Lewis should have gotten his walking papers weeks ago. This may be the worst Bengals team ever, and the coach has not just lost control of his players but almost seems amused by the team’s ineptitude. And Chad Ocho Zero has become a cancer to the team. It’s time to completely clean house, including quarterback Carson Palmer, who also doesn’t seem bothered by the team’s demise. Sherri, Loveland

on!’

Dear Sherri, Not much I can offer except, ‘Right

It is stunning to believe this franchise is just two years removed from winning the AFC North title. Now, here’s the $3 question: Who will replace Lewis as coach? There are several excellent assistant coaches in the NFL, and you can be assured that Brown will overlook all of them. Dear TWIF, The Columbus Blue Jackets remind me of the Ohio State Buckeyes. They never live up to expectations. This city pours its heart and soul into its teams, and all we get in return is one big disappointment after another. Something’s got to change. Sam, Columbus Dear Sam, Gotta confess that I’m not big into hockey, though I do watch the playoffs.

(#20) Georgia Tech at (#19) North Carolina

Don’t Pass!

We have some simple advice for both coaches in this game: Don’t throw the football! Why? Well the defenses of Tech and Carolina have combined for 32 interceptions this season. That’s why we like Tech in this one. The Yellow Jackets can run the ball, averaging 242 yards per game, and Tech has an better overall defense, allowing just 13 points per outing. With that said, if you scan Carolina’s schedule you’ll notice they’re two heartbreaking losses away from being unbeaten. So hmmm, we’re not sure which way to go. OK, it’s hard to bet against Heel boss Butch Davis.

PREDICTION: North Carolina 24-20 Legendary Insight “Two good football teams are going at it here. Both have opportunistic defenses, so this could come down to the team that makes fewer mistakes. I like Carolina at home.” – Vince Dooley

As a matter of... FACT

North Carolina has overcome deficits of 10 points or more four times to win games this season. The Tar Heels are bowl-eligible for the first time since 2004.

Although it may not win the ACC, don’t be surprised to see North Carolina secure a BCS bowl bid with a 10-2 record, considering both losses were of narrow margins.

‘Eers Are Back

Well, well, well, West Virginia; welcome back to big-time college football. We missed ya. It’s been a rough first full season for Mountaineer Coach Bill Stewart. That high-flying spread offense seemed to have gone off to Ann Arbor with RichRod, as there were both ugly wins and losses early. But Stewart’s endured and now has his team thinking Big East title and another BCS bowl. It’s no surprise WVU’s resurgence has been due to the one-two punch of quarterback Pat White and running back Noel Devine. The Bearcats aren’t a pushover, but they’re just catching WVU at the wrong time.

PREDICTION: West Virginia 34-20 Legendary Insight “It’s good to see the WVU offense clicking again. I think they’ve finally figured out how to make Noel Devine more of a playmaker. They shouldn’t have much of a problem against UC.” – Don Nehlen

As a matter of... FACT

UC Coach Brian Kelly was 16-4 in his first 20 games, the top mark among UC football coaches who have coached 20 or more games. Dana King (1931-34) and Sid Gillman (1949-54) went 14-6 in their first 20 games at the helm.

OPINION

Few expect Kelly to stay at UC, which is considered a feeder job to the big-time (his predecessor, Mark Dantonio, left after a few years for Michigan State). But Kelly continually insists he’s staying put.

powerade previewS (#2) Penn State at Iowa

Are Hawks Hovering?

Let’s Go Penn State! Let’s Go Penn State! Come on, you have to admit it would be pretty cool to see JoePa win the national title just a few short years after being written off by virtually everyone, including the Nittany Lion faithful. But beware of Iowa. The Hawkeyes’ four losses have been by a total of 13 points, and its offense has been rolling the last couple of weeks. We were a little surprised to discover that the Hawks have won the last five in the series. That streak will come to an end, but PSU will work for it.

PREDICTION: Penn State 34-23 Legendary Insight “Everyone thinks Michigan State is the only hurdle left for Penn State, but Iowa is dangerous because no one’s paid attention to them all year. Still, the Lions have too much overall firepower.” – John Cooper

As a matter of... FACT

Through the first four Big Ten games, Iowa ranked first in rushing offense (200 yards avg.), second in rushing defense (113 yards) and third in scoring offense (28 points) and scoring defense (15.8 points).

OPINION

Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz seems to have put together a decent team again, following a few lean seasons. We wonder if his name will come up again as Joe Paterno’s successor at Penn State.

(#8) Oklahoma St. at (#3) Texas Tech

Good Old Cowboy Shootout

First team to 100 points wins. OK, maybe it’s 50 but we’re likely in for one big-time shootout when the Cowboys and Red Raiders mix it up. The Pokes lead the Big 12 in rushing but aren’t afraid to go up top. Running back Kendall Hunter leads the conference and ranks fourth nationally with 139.5 rushing yards per game, while wide receiver Dez Bryant is the conference’s top receiver with 110 yards per outing. The Techsters are passhappy but can grind it out if need be, as you saw in the win over No. 1 Texas last week. We’re on the Tech bandwagon.

PREDICTION: Texas Tech 48-31 Legendary Insight “This game may come down to the team that has the ball last. Texas Tech may be better defensively, but I don’t think either team is going to struggle to score points. I’ll just go with the home team.” – Gene Stallings

As a matter of... FACT

Four of the six Big 12 South division teams have been ranked in the Top 10 at some point this season. They are Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Texas.

This Week in Football • central ohio edition • Volume 7, Issue 10

OPINION

Winning the Big 12 South is harder than winning the national championship. The strength of this division provides the defense that winning a conference title needn’t be a prerequisite for winning the national title, as many believe. 11

TROY (5-3)

PLAY PIGSKIN PICKS! www.TWIFonline.com

powerade previewS (#22) California at (#6) USC

Trojans Don’t Want Roses

Some will tout this as a showdown, with two of the three Pac-10 co-leaders clashing with Rose Bowl implications at play. But USC doesn’t want roses. It craves South Beach for a shot at the national title. Besides, who awaits the Trojans in Pasadena? Ohio State? Been there, done that. The Cal defense has been pretty good all season, holding several opponents to less than 100 yards rushing. If the Bears can stop USC back Joe McKnight, and force QB Mark Sanchez into a couple aerial mistakes, the Bears might stay in this one… for a half.

PREDICTION: USC 44-23 Legendary Insight “Cal will have USC’s attention but I don’t foresee the possibility of an upset here. The Trojan defense may be the best in the country and it seems to be getting better each week.” – John Robinson

As a matter of... FACT

Of the 86 head football coaches at Pac-10 schools over the last 50 years, Cal’s Jeff Tedford is one of just four to have winning seasons in each of his first six years. The others: Frank Kush (ASU), John Robinson (USC) and Mike Bellotti (Oregon).

OPINION

That’s impressive. Here’s a stunner as well. USC Coach Pete Carroll is 25-0 in November games. He’s the best big-game coach in the country.

(#1) Alabama at (#15) LSU

Rude Homecoming Awaits

LSU isn’t used to playing the role of spoiler, but an uncharacteristically swiss cheese ‘D’ which has yielded 103 points combined in the team’s two conference losses has been a killer. And though the nation’s top-ranked team is coming to town, Alabama brings with it a yo-yo offense. It’s lights-out one week, anemic the next. The Tigers still believe they’re in the SEC West Division race. A win here and an upset loss by ‘Bama down the road would put the Tigers back in the conference championship. We can see it happening, especially with ‘Bama Coach Nick Saban returning to face his old team.

PREDICTION: LSU 27-24 Legendary Insight “If Alabama wins this one, they’re almost homefree, but you can bet LSU will be fired up to beat (Nick) Saban. If ‘Bama can generate a little offense it should be OK. But I’ll go with the emotion of the home team.” – Pat Dye

As a matter of... FACT

The top three run defenses in the country are TCU (31.2 yards per game), Alabama (62.4) and Texas (69.3). In the AP poll, TCU is ranked 11th, Alabama first and Texas fifth.

OPINION

Just proof No. 12,437 that if you can stop the opponent’s running attack, you can win any game, regardless of how great (Texas) or average (Alabama) your offense is.

The Good Stuff

Envious Of Big-Time Offense Good news: Ohio State’s offense is now ranked 97th nationally. That’s a drop of only two spots from a week ago. Had the Buckeyes faced someone other than Idle last Saturday, they might be checking in at 110th offensively. Bu-dum-bum! Ok, you’ve heard it. But it may be time to inject a bit of humor into OSU’s tragic situation. Even Coach Jim Tressel tongue-in-cheeked last week that he was looking forward to the weekend’s high profile games to see what all the offensive ‘gurus’ know that he doesn’t. He was joking, but we wish he wasn’t because there was much to be learned. Did you watch Texas/Texas Tech? Florida/Georgia? Oklahoma/ Nebraska. Heck, how about Purdue/Michigan? Now that was entertainment! Assuming you caught bits and pieces of all the action, as a Buckeye fan weren’t you just a little envious of the offensive fireworks? I don’t know how many times I caught myself saying, “Why can’t we do that?” I was even jealous watching the lowly Boilermakers. To win, they had to fake a punt (which led to a touchdown) and they ran to perfection the old hook-and-ladder for the winning

score. The Boilers scored 48 points. Damn, they were fun to watch. Gotta give Tress credit in that he handled a barrage of questions from the media last week pertaining to the play-calling and his staff. The Senator knows that many of his Buckeye Nation constituents want him to turn the playbook over to someone else and get rid of his O-line coach. For the first time in, well, forever, Tress didn’t do his political tap dance. He actually answered questions. He was as direct and forthcoming as he’s ever been, and made it clear that he is the man in charge. The Buckeye stops here, he declared. At the time I thought, “Good for him. I don’t want our leader cowering to pressure. He obviously believes in what he’s doing, and that’s the kind of leader we need. In the face of adversity, he remains unwavering.” But now I’m having second thoughts. Am I confusing strong leadership with stubbornness? Let’s face it; this team has been a train wreck offensively. I know running back Beanie Wells was hurt early and there’s been a change at quarterback, but to go three games without an offensive touchdown is simply inexcusable.

With Ken Halloy Ken halloy is the publisher of This Week In Football, with editions in the columbus, cleveland and cincinnati markets. he is also co-host of the this Week in Football radio show, which airs every Sunday during the football season from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on 610 WtVn in columbus.

Pains me to say this, but even Michigan is better offensively. The Wolverines are running the spread with a bunch of misfits, and they rolled up 42 points on the Boilermakers. That’s the same Purdue ‘D’ the Buckeyes couldn’t cross the goal line against. As we prepare for the final quarter of the regular season, we can only hope that Tress will turn his athletes loose like Texas Tech, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and others do. I leave you with this, my friends. Are you starting to wonder if OSU’s talent is really as good as the teams we watched last weekend? I’ll be honest: I really, really liked what I saw in Texas Tech. Receiver Michael Crabtree is unbelievable. Still, the Buckeyes are as talented as Tech, Oklahoma and the other big boys, aren’t they? I truly believe they are. So, if OSU has comparable talent, then what’s the problem?

presents

This is not the time for Ohio State to take a cat nap. There’s a few reasons the Buckeyes might take a lackadaisical approach to this week’s game at Northwestern. First, OSU has won the last three meetings against the Wildcats by an aggregate score of 160-24, with the closest margin of victory being 41 points. The Bucks may be thinking these are the Mildcats of old. Second, NU senior running back Tyrell Sutton (from Akron) is out for the rest of the regular season with a wrist injury. He is the team’s leading rusher (776 yards/97 per game/six TDs) and fourth-best receiver (30 catches for 276 yards and two scores). Third, veteran quarterback C.J. Bacher may be out as well with a hamstring injury. He did not play in last week’s dramatic win at Minnesota. We highly recommend the Buckeyes disregard the aforementioned, though. While OSU has dominated the series recently, it was in 2004 that a Buckeye group with a struggling offensive line traveled to Evanston and lost to the Wildcats for the first time in 33 years, 33-27, in overtime. The Buckeye defense had a miserable time slowing the Wildcat spread offense.

Buckeye Game Day

Coming off the painful loss to No. 3 Penn State, Ohio State has two weeks to prepare and we’re not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. If the offensive line learned how to block and the defense gained insight as to how to play assignment football against the spread, then it’s all good. We have faith in the latter.

BREAKIN’ IT DOWN OSU OFFENSE VS. NORTHWESTERN DEFENSE

(#12) Ohio State at (#25) Northwestern

When: Saturday, November 8 Where: Ryan Field Time: 12:00 p.m. ET TV: ESPN or ESPN2 Series: OSU leads 58-14-1 Last Meeting: 2007, OSU won 58-7 in Columbus

OSU’s next touchdown will be its first in three weeks. Critics throughout Buckeye Nation are wondering if senior Todd Boeckman will get a chance to lead the offense if Terrelle Pryor struggles again. Don’t bet on it. Coach Jim Tressel appears married to Pryor, and we’re OK with the commitment, especially now that national title dreams are vanished. It’s appropriate to think long-term.

We would like to see Tress refer to the playbook he used at Michigan State. It had a little bit of everything, including the I-formation which we love. Playing conditions will likely be cold and windy, so a steady diet of Beanie Wells mixed in with a controlled passing attack is in order. The line makes everything a mystery, so we’re not sure what to expect from the Buckeye offense. Advantage: Even

NORTHWESTERN OFFENSE VS. OSU DEFENSE

Though the Wildcats average a respectable 26 points and 377 yards per game, with Sutton out, Bacher’s status iffy and the Buckeye defense showing signs of the good old days, the scale is weighted in OSU’s favor. But not as much as you’d think. Bacher’s replacement last week at Minnesota, Mike Kafka, rushed for 217 yards on 27 carries, so he obviously offers a different kind of scary to the

Buckeye ‘D’. The Wildcats are one of those teams that are lights-out offensively one week and so-so the next. Of additional concern is a trio of wideouts whom are all equally productive: Lane Ross (38 catches, 397 yards), Rasheed Ward (35, 329) and Eric Peterman (33, 386). We expect the Buckeye defense to stay aggressive and play with continued confidence, as we believe its effort over the past three games has been legit, not smoke and mirrors. At least it had better be. Advantage: Ohio State

SPECIAL TEAMS

I know we sound like a broken CD but the OSU return teams are embarrassing. So let’s leave it there. The coverage teams are improved, but still nothing to text home about. We’re assuming Aaron Pettrey has secured the placekicking job. Congrats to him; he’s earned it. And punter A.J. Trapasso has been a rock all season. Arnado Villarreal has been steady for the Wildcats, hitting 16 of 20 field goals, though all but one of his misses have been within 40 yards. Stefan Demos averages a modest 40 yards per punt, though six have been 50 yards or longer and 16 have been downed within the opponent’s 20-yard line. Advantage: Ohio State

Bucksline John Corby

They may be nationally ranked, but Northwestern is still Northwestern. OSU 23-3.

Larry Larson

All is not lost for Ohio State. The Buckeyes show true character by going into Evanston and taming the Wildcats. Keep the faith Buckeye fans! OSU 31-17.

Dave Maetzold

Northwestern has an explosive offense. Ohio State doesn’t. The Buckeyes have a good defense. Northwestern doesn’t have a ‘D.’ OSU 27-13.

INTANGIBLES

The environment certainly won’t be intimidating. The Buckeyes are still playing for a BCS bowl, including the Rose. That should mean something, shouldn’t it? Advantage: Ohio State

Members of 610WTVN Radio in Columbus offer their predictions and comments on the Ohio State game.

Matt McCoy

Jim Tressel is 1-4 after a bye week, including three losses in a row. That can’t continue; can it? OSU 27-13.

Dave Purdy

The Buckeyes do not have a great record after bye weeks, and they often play down to their competition. But again, that doesn’t necessarily equal a loss. It just means another ugly win. And I’ll take it! OSU 24-17.

Joel Riley

I always enjoy “Mildcats Week”…their cheers are more than mono-syllabic and their cheerleaders are brainy babes. Higher GPA doesn’t mean squat on the gridiron, so the Bucks win another Big Ten game. OSU 42-17.

THE WAY WE SEE IT

Being a nooner kickoff, this offers a chance to take a day off from the sauce and do something constructive. It should be a workmanlike Buckeye victory. But if the Bucks play like they’ve been into the sauce themselves. . .

OAC Title Is On The Line

It is on! The Mount Union Purple Raiders and the Otterbein Cardinals square off in what is unquestionably the conference’s game of the year, ultimately determining who’ll be king of the OAC at season’s end. Mount Union (8-0, 7-0), which has won 16 consecutive OAC crowns, was business as usual last week in smashing John Carroll, 41-7. Otterbein (8-0, 7-0), meanwhile, manhandled Marietta, 55-0. The Cardinals have now set a school record for most wins in a season as they prepare to host the Purple Raiders. Tickets go on sale Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Otterbein’s Memorial Stadium ticket office. One suggestion: Get in line right now and bring This Week In Football with you to read while waiting in line!

PANTHER PREVIEW

Urbana Blue Knights at Ohio Dominican Panthers

A Panther Win Streak! The Ohio Dominican Panthers mowed through the Mid-State Mideast League a year ago en route to a 10-0 regular season record. But fortunes haven’t been as great for ODU this year. Heading into last week, ODU’s best stretch thus far was a two-game win streak following opening season wins over Marian College and Campbellsville. But here again are the Panthers, who’ve put together their second two-game win streak after squeaking by Walsh, 24-22, last week.

This Week’s Question:

Should Todd Boeckman get another shot as the starting quarterback?

Presents Ohio State appears destined for a second-place Big Ten finish. So what good would it be for Coach Jim Tressel to shake things up again by benching Terrelle Pryor in favor of Todd Boeckman? Unless OSU falls in one of its three remaining yet very winnable games, the Buckeyes are headed, at best, to the Rose Bowl and at worst, the Capital One Bowl. Nope. No national championship game for OSU to stink up this year. The ultimate prize is no longer a possibility for the Buckeyes. So why start a senior when you can keep developing the star you brought in to run your offense for the next two, and if Buckeye nation is lucky, three seasons. Wouldn’t everyone like to see Pryor start in the ‘Shoe against the U of M? Wouldn’t you like next years Michigan game to not be Pryor’s first real taste of The Game?

NO

Don’t get me wrong. Boeckman is a good guy, solid leader and above average passer. Maybe next year he can develop into a dependable NFL back-up like the Colts’ Jim Sorgi. Right now, the Bucks have absolutely no obligation to Boeckman. It’s much more important to continue what already is a bright future with Pryor. He will become a better leader and quarterback with every snap he takes this year.

YES

Now that Ohio State is both out of the national and Big Ten title pictures, as a senior Todd Boeckman should get a chance to lead the Buckeyes again this season, even if it’s just for one game. The odd thing is, Coach Jim Tressel has always shown loyalty, sometimes to a fault, with his seniors. Yet, he seems to be snubbing Boeckman. Some thanks to a guy who not only led the Buckeyes to the national title game last year, but who has handled his demotion

this season with total class. Make no mistake: Terrelle Pryor is the man for the Buckeye offense, but not starting a game at this point is not going to destroy the young man. In fact, Pryor would likely be the first to propose that Boeckman get another chance to show his stuff before his career comes to an end. That’s the type of unselfish player Pryor is. Even if Boeckman doesn’t earn another start, he should get some playing time down the stretch because OSU’s passing game is suffering big-time. Fact is, Pryor’s passing leaves much to be desired at this point. Boeckman has a better chance to stretch out an opposing defense right now. Never thought I’d write that, but it’s true. Here’s hoping that Tress will surprise us and allow Boeckman to at least start in OSU’s bowl game, even if he only leads them for a series or two.

YES NO

“Todd Boeckman should be starting because he’s a senior and one of the team captains, plus he’s a much better passer than Terrelle Pryor. Not having the passing threat is also hurting Beanie Wells as opponents are focused solely on him. But I would like to see both quarterbacks play, especially against the strong defenses, to give the Buckeye offense that much more versatility.” Debbie Clay, Columbus “Boeckman didn’t do anything to lose his job. He led OSU to a Big Ten title and the national championship game. The offense has sputtered without him.” Christian Brooks, Columbus “Pryor is more of a playmaker and with him in the same backfield as Beanie Wells, it gives the OSU offense a strong rushing combo.” Ryan Horace Columbus

“Boeckman is a really good quarterback and he took OSU to the national championship game. He deserves another shot.” Pam Lolo Columbus

YES

“Boeckman is a sixth-year senior who has the experience needed to lead the Buckeyes. Pryor is making way too many freshman mistakes. But I would like to see both of them in the backfield at the same time. Now that would be interesting!” Chuck Lieb Columbus

IN THE ZONE

With “The Roadman” Kenny Roda

With The Browns, You Never Know What You’re Going To Get To best describe the Cleveland Browns at this moment, I would like to borrow a famous line from the movie “Forrest Gump”: The Browns are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. For sure, there is one thing the Browns are consistent at, and that’s being inconsistent. It has become impossible to forecast whether the good Browns, or the bad Browns, will show up from week to week. There’s absolutely no particular reason why the Browns are so erratic. The best explanation that I can conclude to is that it is a various bunch of reasons that change on a weekly basis. One week it is the play of quarterback Derek Anderson. Another week it is wide receiver Braylon Edwards dropping passes left and right. Another week it’s play-calling. Then it’s the defense’s lack of sure tackling. Or it could just be a general lack of execution along the offensive line, along with missed opportunities when it comes to the defense creating turnovers. In Cleveland’s five losses, it can best be summed up that those reasons all combined are why the Browns did in fact lose those games. The hideous loss to Baltimore, a game in which Cleveland led by two scores in the fourth quarter, sure had a variety of

Meet YOUR Bengals!

the aforementioned present. And it doesn’t get any easier this week as Denver comes to town for a Thursday night showdown. For Cleveland to win, and this might sound simple but it’s ever so true, it must play football for four quarters. Not for two quarters like against Baltimore last week. No, the Browns must come to play for four entire quarters. If the Browns can do that, and learn how to finally finish off a team, then they stand a good chance at beating the Broncos. All the rage this week will be whether or not Crennel should start Brady Quinn in place of the struggling Anderson. I bet it doesn’t happen because of the short three days in which to prepare for Denver, and because, ultimately, it doesn’t matter if Quinn or Anderson is behind center. Edwards still is going to drop catch-able passes and the defense is going to struggle. And if Cleveland would lose to Denver, I do think it is inevitable that Quinn will start the following week at Buffalo on Monday night. The Browns would be 3-6, and if that’s the case, the season would be all but lost. Seeing what Quinn could do at that point should certainly be on Crennel’s agenda. Let’s shift gears to The Ohio State Buckeyes, who head to Northwestern for a match-up of Top 25 Big Ten teams.

This is a trap game. The 7-2 Wildcats are having a good season and knocking off the Buckeyes would make their season great. Northwestern, having enjoyed such unexpected success this year, has nothing to lose, while OSU is seeking a BCS bowl berth. OSU can indeed get that big slot in a BCS bowl if it wins out. So there’s a bit more pressure on Coach Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes this week. I can see OSU ironing out its offensive woes with an extra week of preparation, and it should also give Beanie Wells some much-needed rest to heal his ailing foot. We all know the defense is at its peak right now, so I’ll go with the Buckeyes on the road. How does a 27-14 Buckeye win sound? While not pretty, I’ll take it and hope the Buckeyes can run the table en route to yet another BCS bowl game. Go Bucks!

Browns Game Day

Scouting Report: The Denver Broncos

by marty gItlin

An Old Nemesis Returns For A Thursday Night Special You think they’re only complaining about inconsistency in Cleveland? How about what’s going on in the Mile High City? They’re doing some Mile High moaning over there. The Broncos were kicking up their heels after a 3-0 start in which they averaged a downright ridiculous 38 points a game. In losing three of their next four, however, they scored just 59 points. Now that’s inconsistency. On the other hand, the Bronco defense has been consistent – consistently bad. In the six games following the opener, they surrendered an average of 30.2 points a game. Yet the Broncos remained in first place in the woeful AFC West through Week 8. If they can rediscover the explosiveness in the offense and some semblance of a defense, they should make the playoffs. After all, San Diego has been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this year and neither Oakland nor Kansas City is a factor. The Browns aren’t so fortunate. Pittsburgh threatens to run away and hide in the AFC North, though its loss to the New York Giants in Week 7 while both Cleveland and Baltimore won put those plans temporarily on hold. But it appears likely that the Browns will need to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card. Cleveland’s next stretch of three of four games at home will ultimately determine its fate.

BROWNS OFFENSE VS. BRONCOS DEFENSE

Broncos defense? What defense? Through seven games, Denver ranked 30th in the NFL in yards per game at 394.6 and 29th in points per game at 27.9. The Broncos rank last in the NFL with just two interceptions, which is shocking considering they feature such stalwarts as Dre Bly and Champ Bailey in the secondary. Bailey, however, is in the midst of a six-week absence due to a groin injury. It’s no wonder the Broncos are dead last in the AFC with a minus-9 giveaway-takeaway rating. Denver, though, has impressively racked up 17 sacks and linebacker D.J. Williams has performed well, but the pass defense has been pathetic and the run defense average. It becomes increasingly apparent that no matter how poorly an opponent defends the pass, the key to Cleveland’s success is Jamal Lewis rushing at least 20 times. Lewis’ tough running style breaks down defenses, which in turn opens up the deep passing game. Quite important when you take into consideration that quarterback Derek Anderson feels most comfortable with the deep ball. With wideout Joe Jurevicius out for the season, the Browns need Donte Stallworth to emerge as a dependable receiver. His effectiveness will 28

prevent defenses from keying on Braylon Edwards and tight end Kellen Winslow. ADVANTAGE: Browns

BRONCOS OFFENSE VS. BROWNS DEFENSE

Is the secondary ready to roll? Are the pass rushers prepared for the chase? Those are questions the Browns must answer as they face the Denver aerial assault. Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has launched an average of 36 passes a game, but while he started with a boom, of late he’s been a bust. In the first four games, he completed Denver Coach 102 of 157 passes for 1,275 yards, nine Mike Shanahan touchdowns and just four interceptions. on the ground, In the following three weeks, he completed just 61 of they have been 97 passes for 587 yards, stingy in the red four touchdowns and zone. MARTY MAKES THE CALL

With just three days to prepare for both teams, coaching will play a huge role in this battle of old AFC Super Bowl contending rivals of the 1980s. The Browns boast several advantages including playing at home where they have been strong since 2007. Since Cleveland is behind in a stronger division, it should feel a greater sense of motivation. And the Browns boast a stronger running attack behind Lewis, which should help keep the Denver offense off the field. Cleveland is also stronger defensively, but that isn’t saying much considering the ineptitude of the Bronco defense. Denver is for sure dangerous, though, but give Cleveland the ultimate edge playing a home night game in front of the raucous Dawg Pound, which still harbors hatred for the old John Elway-led Broncos.

The kicking game has been special for Denver, while the return game has been spectacular as usual for the Browns. Denver placekicker Matt Prater and punter Brett Kern have been sensational. Prater has converted on all but one of 14 field goals. Kern, meanwhile, is averaging 48 yards a punt. Their kick returners, however, have been rather ordinary. Andre Hall averaged just 22 yards with a long of 28 through seven games. Royal is rather dangerous as a punt returner, but Denver’s kickoff team has been poor at covering kicks. Phil Dawson remains steady as the Cleveland placekicker, but punter Dave Zastudil alternates good games with bad ones. ADVANTAGE: Even Denver photos courtesy of Eric Lars Bakke/Denver Broncos

Central Ohio playoff Previews the big three

Hilliard Davidson (10-1) vs. Worthington Kilbourne (9-2)

The Hilliard Davidson Wildcats devoured the Worthington Kilbourne Wolves, 17-10, a month ago. OK, it wasn’t exactly a devouring, but if history repeats, Davidson will be heading to the Division I state quarterfinals. Davidson opened the playoffs with a 38-7 victory over Grove City, while Kilbourne forced this Ohio Capital Conference Central Division rematch by edging Brookhaven, 14-6. The Wolves were led by fullback Mike Johnson, who finished with 94 yards on just nine carries. And Kilbourne’s defense was as staunch as it has been much of the year in holding down a very good Brookhaven offense. And a defensive thriller is likely, as two of central Ohio’s best defenses and defensive geniuses in Davidson Coach Brian White and Kilbourne Coach Vince Trombetti square off.

Upper Arlington (10-1) vs. Pickerington Central (11-0)

In late August, the Upper Arlington Golden Bears jogged onto the field for their opener with soaring expectations. But they trudged off a couple hours later in defeat – their lone disappointment of the season. That loss was handed to them by Pickerington Central. So without a doubt, Upper Arlington is thinking revenge. The Bears earned this shot at redemption by beating Marysville, 28-16, last week. However, Upper Arlington must play better this week to knock off undefeated Pickerington Central. That became more apparent when Pickerington Central blew away Hayes with a 28-point second quarter en route to a 38-21 first-round victory.

Prediction: Pickerington Central 20, Upper Arlington 10

Prediction: Hilliard Davidson 14, Worthington Kilbourne 7

Marion-Franklin (10-1) vs. St. Francis DeSales (11-0)

All Marion-Franklin has ever wanted is to celebrate a playoff victory. After all, the Red Devils have lost four consecutive first-round postseason games. And finally, last Friday they did, courtesy of a thrilling 34-28 double overtime win over Columbus City League rival Beechcroft, in which Marion-Franklin couldn’t celebrate until running back Tyrell Massey scored on a 4-yard run in the second overtime. Oh, by the way, that makes 22 touchdowns tallied by Massey this season. St. Francis DeSales, however, is one tough assignment. The Stallions opened the postseason with a tough 20-17 win over Bishop Watterson. DeSales needed a stout defensive effort and some strong running from running back Josh Kusan, who rushed for 124 yards on 19 carries. Kusan has rushed for 18 touchdowns this season and expect him to have another big day against the Devils.

Prediction: St. Francis DeSales 35, Marion-Franklin 20

three MORE to watch Olentangy Liberty (8-3) vs. Medina Highland (10-1)

Top seeds rarely fall in high school playoffs. Especially in the first round. Especially by a large margin. Well, Olentangy Liberty defied conventional wisdom by smashing No. 1 seed Toledo Central Catholic, 34-7, last week in Toledo. The upset special was provided courtesy of Allen Eggleston, who rambled for 143 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Zach Michael added a 3-yard scoring run and passed for 109 yards, giving him 1,442 for the season. And the Patriots will have one name prominently on their minds as they prepare for Medina Highland: Chris Snook. The West Virginia University recruit has been running wild all season and did so again in a 35-23 first-round victory over Avon Lake. He rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries.

Prediction: Medina Highland 27, Olentangy Liberty 17

Licking Valley (10-1) vs. Poland Seminary (9-2)

Watch out Poland Seminary! There’s a Storm coming! That is, Licking Valley running back/linebacker and Ohio State recruit Storm Klein. Klein has rushed for more than 1,400 yards this season, but it was quarterback Drew Ryan that did most of the work in a 37-6 stomping of Rayland Buckeye Local that kicked off the Division III playoffs. Ryan rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more in the win. Poland Seminary nearly didn’t get a date with Klein & Co. But a 30-yard field goal by Ryan Rovnak with 1:28 remaining clinched a 27-24 win over Granville.

Prediction: Licking Valley 28, Poland Seminary 14

Ottawa-Glandorf (7-4) vs. Pleasant (10-1)

You can certainly say OttawaGlandorf was primed and ready for the playoffs. You don’t outscore your opponent 42-0 in the first half of the firstround postseason game when you’re not ready. And even more impressively, the Titans were clearly the underdogs based on being the seventh seed facing the second seeded and undefeated Clearview, who the Titans indeed finished off, 56-12, rushing for 307 yards along the way. Now the Titans will seek revenge against Pleasant which beat them, 48-21, in last year’s regional semifinal. Pleasant made life very unpleasant for Pemberville Eastwood last week, playing exceptional defense in a 20-7 victory. The hero was Cory Snyder, who pulled off touchdown runs of 13 and 20 yards in the fourth quarter to help erase a 7-6 deficit. And Spartan Coach Chris Kubbs will undoubtedly use Snyder’s vast talents to send the Titans packing two consecutive seasons.

Prediction: Pleasant 35, Ottawa-Glandorf 21

DORIAN BELL

Gateway High School • Monroeville, Pa.

Linebacker 6-0, 230, Senior 40-yard dash: 4.5 seconds College of Choice: Verbally committed to Ohio State Commit Date: April 21, 2008 Who Lost Out?: Boston College, LSU, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia Shane Rolin/Gatewaygators.com

The Scoop: Bell, one of the most highly recruited prospects in the nation, has the potential to play either inside or outside linebacker in college. He’s a playmaker with elite speed and lateral quickness. He shows great skill in rushing the quarterback and dropping back in coverage, and packs quite the punch when tackling. Bell is a relentless competitor and should warrant playing time as a freshman.

Note To The Buckeye Coaches: Stop Celebrating Punts!

Presents

The

Final Word

With Mark “Munch” Bishop

Great day to you friend! I must say, I truly enjoyed my cup of coffee Sunday morning with the extra hour of sleep. Yet, how did we survive last weekend with no Buckeye football? I forgot what it meant to have a Saturday to spend with the family, do chores and watch a ton of football on the tube. It was a great day, but then again, enough! Bring back our Buckeyes! Perusing print (I still love holding a newspaper or magazine with my morning coffee or evening beverage), I saw the name “Kafka” in the headlines for the Northwestern Wildcats. Apparently he’s the quarterback who directed the Wildcat option attack in their impressive road win over nationally ranked Minnesota. Now, I know of Kafka as the author, and I know of beef “kafta,” which is a Middle Eastern dish, but quarterback C.J. Bacher had started 25 straight games for the Wildcats. Who is this Kafka fella? And with the upcoming trip to Evanston this weekend for OSU, I had to look into this, and indeed

Mark “Munch” Bishop brings an energy and charisma to afternoon sports that can only be done by a true fan. he lives and dies with every local team and can talk as knowledgably about the Browns of the Jim Brown or the tim couch era. “Munch” has been a household name in cleveland radio and is a huge Buckeye supporter. he started in radio in 1979 in columbus and is still active in the market, along with cleveland, for 25 years strong.

Mike Kafka filled in for Bacher and rushed for 217 yards on 27 carries in a Wildcat win! What a thrilling win it was as Northwestern earned the victory with a pick six. Wildcat safety Brendan Smith returned an interception 48 yards for the game winner in the waning seconds of the contest. Now, with the Wildcats riding some monumental momentum, will the Buckeyes fall prey to the Wildcats in that same manner? I hardly think so. Evanston will be like an OSU home game Saturday! If you are around the loop in the Windy City, all trains heading north will echo with O-H…I-O! And let’s hope the week off gives the Bucks a hungry demeanor they’ll need to pull off the Big Ten road win. Beat Northwestern? SURE! Even with Mr. Kafka, there is no pride of Akron, running back Tyrell Sutton (yes, Akron is IN Ohio!). Northwestern’s most consistent offensive weapon over the past few

years is hurt, and likely out for the remainder of the season. All OSU needs to do to win at Northwestern is commit to the run with Beanie Wells. With that strategy, the Buckeyes for sure will wear out the Wildcat ‘D’ and win. One last note: It’s time for OSU coaches to stop celebrating good punts, as they did frequently two weeks ago against Penn State. Sure, punting is important in regards to field position, but not the most important part of the game! Instead, celebrate touchdowns! PLEASE, no more fist pumps following an A.J. Trapasso punt – most especially the average boots. My best, as always, and enjoy every sandwich!
