Performing arts competition is coming
THE Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts is back on again and the talent is itching to perform in the region’s oldest running performing arts competition. Now in its 85th year the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts will take place on Thursday, 23 June to Thursday, 30 June at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre. On Saturday, 25 June, the Alton Budd Memorial Award with 10 competitors will be judged by Peta Blyth OAM. Dancing will commence on Saturday, July 2, with three group days then continue to July 12 with solo sections judging dance for 2016 is Pam Cramp. On Saturday, July 9, the JJ Richards Memorial Scholarship will feature 20 competitors. The Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts (eisteddfod) began in 1923 as the “Murwillumbah Music Festival”.
Gradually the Festival enlarged to include Speech and Drama as well as Dance. Originally the Festival was approximately 3 days in length but has now extended to approximately four weeks. The earlier Festivals were held at the end of Term 1 of the school year, when the year was a 3 term year. Today it is always held at the end of Term 2 of the school year as schools now have a 4 term year. Speech and Drama is usually the 2nd and 3rd last weeks of the term, Music is usually the last and 2nd last weeks of the term and Dance is usually the 1 1/2 weeks of school holidays. The Schedule is available at the end of January of each year and the closing date for entries is usually in the middle of March. Please note a supper will be served throughout the event. For further information phone the President Heather Martin (OAM) on: 0418 647 355.
