community,” Mr Howes said. “Over the first few days in the position I have been impressed about the outstanding opportunities and quality innovative teaching that the students have access to on a daily basis. “I have also been very pleased by the warm and welcoming culture of the school. I am very much looking forward to getting to know the students, their families and the community.” Mr Howes’ previous appointment was as Deputy Principal at The Rivers Secondary College, Richmond River High Campus in Lismore. His intention is to remain as Principal of Murwillumbah High School well into the future.
POTTSVILLE RESIDENT Alan Davis recently wrote to The Weekly with an offer to help find lost or mysterious treasures with his metal detecting skills. “For the best part of three years now, I have been detecting as a hobby,” he wrote. “During that time, I have occasionally found what I would classify as an item of interest, something other than junk. “I still have these items. Now the awkward part is, although I put a notice up (locally) I don’t describe the article in detail, to ensure that the legitimate owner contacts me. “There are various reasons why I may not get any enquiries. It could have been lost by a tourist, or, if lost by a local, they may not read the notice board.” “So if you lose something or have lost anything in the past (metallic or part-metallic) please contact me on (02) 6676 2685. “I am available to help you, even if you have lost the item on your own property.” However, Mr Davis said there were also some conditions. “But please note, I do not do this for personal gain, so I have to make it clear that it has to be something of personal value (monetary, historical or sentimental) and not just, say, a decimal coin for instance,” he wrote. “This offer is free to Tweed Shire residents or visitors to this Shire and local Historical Societies.” For more information phone Mr Davis on (02) 6676 2685.

Meanwhile, the nation’s six-year-olds could undertake a counting skills examination, naming shapes and sounding out words under a ‘light touch’ test to check their schooling progress. Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham told AAP media that he has appointed a five-person panel to develop the new assessments for Year 1 students. Based on assessments used in England, the Year 1 tests are likely to involve children verbally identifying letters and sounds in real and made up words, simple counting, recognising numbers, naming shapes and demonstrating basic measurement knowledge.

AFTER A LENGTHY summer break, it was back to the books for the Tweed’s school students on Monday, January 30, for the first term of 2017. Thousands of children in schools across the Tweed Shire started their first year of primary or high school this week. There were tears of joy from parents who dropped their kids off to school, some for the first time. The Weekly dropped into Murwillumbah High School this week to meet the new Principal Peter Howes. “It is an absolute pleasure to have been appointed as the Principal of Murwillumbah High School, a school that continues to be such an important part of the local
