When your car is as old as you are “It’s basically about trying to keep old vehicles on the road. “We have a lot of families in the club and we organise outings and we are also a community based club so we do things like helping out at Anzac Day by taking the diggers out in the old cars. “We’ve got about 68 members in the club and we have a meeting once a month and they are like information sessions, so whether you are new to it or you have been doing it for a while, everyone helps each other out. “We’ve also got four ladies on our committee which is fantastic as everyone thinks vehicle clubs are male dominated but that’s certainly not the case with us at all.” After having personally restored five classic vehicles, Mr Ling said he is now a one-car man and is happy with his VW. He is however, keeping his love of classic cars in the family. “The beetle has always been my favourite but I am now restoring an old Holden ute with my son who has just turned 23.” The Tweed Valley Vehicle Restorers Club meets on the last Wednesday of the month at Murwillumbah RSL club at 7.30pm. By Megan Albany WHILE MANY of us regret selling our first car, some people like Tweed Valley Vehicle Restorers Club President Peter Ling, had the sense to hold onto the vehicles they loved while the rest of us were trading in, what would now be valuable vintage cars, for a newer model. “I’ve been passionate about cars since I left school in 1980,” Mr Ling said. “I’ve always been a classic vehicle enthusiast. “My own car is a white ‘67 VW beetle, built the same year I was born. “I’ve had the beetle for about 19 years and I restored it over a couple of years and I have been driving it at club events ever since. “I paid about $800 for it back then but it would be worth a bit more than that now.” Mr Ling, who has been president of the club for over ten years said it is a community based club that welcomes anyone with a passion for restoration. “Our Club has been going now for well over 30 years and we encourage people from all walks of life with vintage or historic cars, trucks, motorcycles or anyone with a passion for all things mechanical,” he said.
