Gold Coast Suns stars visit Murwillumbah Flu shot on its way
MURWILLUMBAH RESIDENTS were given a rare treat to meet with some of the star players from the Gold Coast Suns AFL team on Thursday, March 27. Among the players was Suns forward Ben Ainsworth, ruckman Matt Conroy and midfielder Darcy Macpherson who set up a signing table at Sports World Murwillumbah. The trio said they were delighted to visit the Tweed Valley and meet with local fans. Among the supporters were eager local students and parents including current young players with the Vulcans Junior AFL Club. By Jonathon Howard TWEED SHIRE residents are being urged by local pharmacists to make the flu vaccine a priority this month and lessen the burden on the public healthcare system. Although the vaccine is not effective to prevent COVID-19, Tweed residents can help reduce the number of influenza cases and make life easier for healthcare workers. Tweed Shire pharmacists are expected to receive the flu shot late this week or early next week. Pharmacists can also now vaccinate people aged 10 years and over in NSW. Varela and Swift Pharmacy co-owner Skye Swift said there was a strong need to minimise the number of flu transmissions wherever possible. “We have all our staff accredited and residents can simply turn up, fill out a consent form and get the shot,” she said. Mrs Swift said the most helpful way to prevent the spread of both the flu and COVID-19 was to adopt good handwashing techniques. “It’s vital that you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water,” she said. “You should also prevent touching your face including mouth and eyes.” Mrs Swift said anyone with flu-like symptoms should call their doctor ahead first. “This is extremely important, people should call ahead first if they show symptoms,” she said. “We don’t want to spread infections in hospitals, medical centres or pharmacies.” Murwillumbah Priceline Pharmacist Lisa Adams said the staff were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the flu shots. “I would predict they will arrive in the coming weeks and will be made available immediately,” she said. “I would like to encourage residents to take up the flu shot, as it will assist in reducing the burden on the healthcare system.” Mrs Adams said the pharmacy has received a lot of enquiries about the flu vaccine, but no cases of flu at this stage. “We have made a significant order for the flu shots and we’re prepared once they arrive,” she said. Last year’s record-breaking flu season claimed a staggering 902 lives and infected more than 313,000 people nationally. In NSW, 111,710 people were infected with influenza and at the time of print there had been more than 90 coronavirus cases and three deaths in Australia.
