Tweed Valley Weekly Locals Supporting Locals

Raunchy show draws big crowds for Cabaret 360 THE UKI Hall came alive last Friday and Saturday (August 12-13) when more than 35 performers took to the stage to explore the concept of “Nothing is what it Seems’’. The packed and clearly delighted audiences were treated to a plethora of local acts showcased within the framework of an original show directed by Michele Thomas and Marlena Basser that explored the landscape of the secrets ‘hidden in the closet”. The Bella Fontes, Li Pawson, Dandyman, Ruby Rubberlegs, David Hallett and many other performers were captured by the spell of the giant spider queen “Spidora” who lurked within a decorated wardrobe, stealing people away and wrapping them in her web. Local circus legend Sue Hird played Spidora to much hilarity and acclaim. Act after act revealed another secret to be revealed and another incredible local talent to be discovered. The Cabaret used many devices of traditional theatre – light box illuminations for shadow puppet play, black lights to make Spidora’s teeth glow and illuminated hoops come alive, giant tetrahedron’s from which faeries exploded,

acrobalance, music, comedy, and more, including in the finale a “human explosion” out of the wardrobe of every performer in the show to the rousing poem – about raging against the dying of the light, “Rock’n’Roll” performed by local performance-art identity Kool Eze Yay. Producer, Nick Hanlon of Rainbow Region Gigs said the event provided a huge boost to the local arts. “More than 47 artists, production crew and others were employed for this show, which resulted in a great boost for the local arts economy,” she said. “Artists gather in this region in great numbers so it stands to reason that a relatively small cabaret in a small village like Uki can actually be of a professional world class standard – many of the acts who performed in Cabaret 360 tour the world to perform when not at home. It is essential to foster and support the arts in our communities so many thanks are due to all the wonderful sponsors, supporters, performers and crew who contributed to this show. It’s success is ultimately a great expression of our collective strength as an artistic community.” To find out more about Rainbow Region Gigs or to get in contact with Nick Hanlon phone: 0477 827 940.
