8 The acrobats of Cirque Peking will perform gasp-worthy feats like the ones pictured here during their show at GSU's Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Special to Connect

Welcome to Cirque Peking Special to Connect The Georgia Southern University Performing Arts Center (PAC) will welcome The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China as they perform Cirque Peking on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Box Office Manager Juanita Smith says this is one of the best performances of the season. “The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China is one of the most exciting shows to visit at the PAC this season,” said Smith. “It’s truly a beautiful, mysterious, inspiring and family-friendly performance.” Founded in 1951, The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China has been one of the most acclaimed acrobatic troupes in China. Over several generations, the company has developed many unique, thrilling and death-defying acts. The troupe has not released a complete set list yet, so not even the people at the PAC are certain exactly what acts the acrobats will perform. This is largely so that the audience will not be disappointed if a performer is unable to complete a certain routine due to injury or other factors, but it does ensure that each performance is unique. However, a few of the potential acts include jumping through hoops high above the air, lasso tricks, juggling drums, balancing acts on a trapeze and contortion — and that’s just to start. For Georgia Southern students, tickets are $10. For adults in the community, tickets are $22 and $11 for youth. For more information about the performance, or to purchase tickets, visit academics.georgiasouthern.edu/ pac.w

SPECIAL TO CONNECT

Carol Maillard was one of the founding singers of Sweet Honey in the Rock, which came together in 1973 in Washington, D.C., and is an accomplished singer, songwriter and actress in her own right.

: Tell us about Sweet Honey in the Rock. : Well, Sweet Honey in the Rock is an a capella quartet that came into existence in 1973 in Washington, D.C. We were actors — and our vocal director Bernice Johnson Reagon — we were the four that finally ended up creating the group. There were other people who were involved in the early beginnings, you know, just rehearsing, coming up with material, men and women…, but then there was a rehearsal where only four people showed up. And that was Bernice, Louise Robinson, myself and a woman by the name of Mie.

dren’s songs, rap and R&B flavors in the music that we do. We pull in our experience as black women and also as black Americans. : So what drew you to the group in the beginning? : I was just happened to be in the room at the right time. I was just one of the singers who showed up at the rehearsal. : Does Sweet Honey write all of its music itself? : Not all of it. We write a good part of it, but we also arrange other people’s music. : Have you done a lot of college shows? What is it like performing for a different audience? : Absolutely. Well, it just depends. Some places, the college campus show sells out, maybe because the tickets are free or because they get a low discount. Very seldom do we know that a lot of college students came to the show. These people in the audiences can come from the community. Sometimes people come from out of town; they drive an hour or two, sometimes three, because Sweet Honey is in their general area. So it’s hard to say how a campus is different from a concert hall. Myself, personally, I don’t see the difference. : What is your favorite part about performing with Sweet Honey in the Rock? : I think watching the other ladies sing. It’s different every time they do something, and they really are great singers and fine performers. It’s enjoyable to watch them.

Coming to the PAC this Wednesday, Oct. 8, is a unique musical act made up of eclectic influences and drawing from many cultural backgrounds. Sweet Honey in the Rock brings music with a mission. One of its members, Carol Maillard, took a (very, very) quick break from the group's intense rehearsal schedule to talk to Connect about the basics of Sweet Honey in the Rock.

And we were Sweet Honey in the Rock together for maybe about a year, a year and a half we all stayed together. And when Mie left, we started having auditions to have another singer, and we ended up being a quintet. That was when it turned into five singers. We do a lot of different kinds of music. We do a capella music, we work with bands, we’ve sung with orchestras, but primarily the group is a capella, and the music we pull our repertoire from is very heavily rooted in African and African-American culture. : I kind of want to follow up on that. It seems like you guys have a mission behind the kind of music you choose and the kind of music you want to perform and show people. What is that mission? : Well, first of all, we always want to pay homage and honor our ancestors and the people who came before us: our parents, people of different movements [like] the Civil Rights movement. People who made great strides in advancing the idea of freedom and justice and liberty, Civil Rights, human rights for all people. We embrace all of that — these traditions — and even the labor party and the labor movement. Just people being fair to one another and loving one another and being understanding — not just tolerant — and being understanding of one another. The Civil Rights movement really put music at the forefront as a way to bring people together. When things got really really difficult and hard and violent and crazy and wrong, it would empower people and bring them together as one voice to make change. But we also want to entertain people as well; we want it to be an entertaining experience. You’ll hear jazz, blues, traditional gospel, spirituals, African chants, love songs, chil-

the illusion that the Alien is learning from its encounters with the player and adjusting its hunting strategy appropriately. The game is done to perfection, in my opinion, in both visuals and audio. The graphics are have the perfect lighting and textures to give the feeling of being isolated on a space station in the middle of nowhere. Also, the audio-cues, sounds and score tie in to perfection with the visuals and ambiance. This perfect blend of audio and visuals creates a very tense and frightening experience. Gamers should be warned, though: this is a survival horror game. The Alien will not show up instantly and may even take an hour or two for gamers to eventually cross paths with it. With that said, some gamers may find this game poorly paced, particularly considering the hours of exploring you will have to do on the space station. Also, as beautiful as the game is, the facial animations look rather bland at times. In conclusion, the game is genuinely scary and perfectly captures the mood and tone of the Alien films. Also, the unpredictable AI of the actual Alien makes for a tense catand-mouse gameplay that is perfect for a survival horror. Although the pacing and game style are not suited for all gamers, Alien: Isolation is a welcome horror and probably the best Alien game to date.w

Eagles soar to the top of the Sun Belt defense, but four takeaways will definitely help cure any defensive struggles. Tattler Game Ball: Let’s award this week’s game ball to LA Ramsby. He’s been a steady contributor offensively all season but hasn’t put up the flashy numbers like Ellison and Brown Breida have. “Little Al” racked up 136 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries Saturday night. It’s great to see him finally have a breakout game. Southern has a real three-headed monster in the backfield in that trio — and they are complemented by plenty of other big-play ability in Favian Upshaw, Devin Scott and Ean Days. It sure is fun to watch this offense. And even on nights when it seems they aren’t firing on all cylinders, the Eagles can rattle off 437 total yards and 36 points. Georgia Southern now sits atop the Sun Belt with a 3-0 record. Arkansas State, Texas State and LouisianaLafayette are all 1-0. Everybody else has at least one loss. The Eagles will look to improve to 4-0 with a homecoming date against Idaho this weekend. The Vandals have had a tough go of things so far this season. Despite being winless, they have been in every game

they have played except for a 34-10 loss to South Alabama two weeks ago. Idaho can score. They are averaging 25.6 points per game and have scored 30 or more points in three of their five games. Redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Linehan has passed for over 300 yards in four of his team’s five games and leads the conference in completions per game (29.0), passing yards per game (328.8) and total passing yards (1,644). The Vandals, however, don’t play much defense. Idaho gives up an average of 37.6 points per game and has allowed 483.6 yards per game to opposing

True Blue Spirit 5K to kick off homecoming weekend Show off your True Blue spirit on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 a.m. for the True Blue 5K race. The True Blue 5K will take place the morning of the homecoming football game against University of Idaho. This race through campus is a great way to begin a day of tailgating and cheering on the Eagles. Whether you are a seasoned runner, new to the sport or just looking for a

leisurely walk with your dog, this race is well-suited to any participant. President Keel will kick off the race with the help of the Georgia Southern cheerleaders and drumline. GUS will also be there to keep participants pumped and energized. “People love to dress up! Whether it is Georgia Southern gear or superhero costumes, we encourage you to wear what you want,” said Emmy Richards, Group Fitness Program Director. At the finish line there will be catered food from Barberitos. Awards are given

offenses. They also don’t seem to be able to run the ball. Through five games, the Vandals have a total of 433 rushing yards on the year; Southern averages not much less than that per game (367.2). Idaho averages 2.4 yards per carry and 86.6 yards per game on the ground. Tattler Prediction: Idaho will be able to move the ball, but they won’t stop the Eagles. And Georgia Southern’s defense will bend, but won’t break. Eagles 42, Vandals 20 This should be a fun one — let’s pack Paulson and bring the noise again! Happy Homecoming week, Eagle Nation!w

Well, it wasn’t pretty. But, like Erk used to say, 36 is more than 28 and we’ll take it every time. Georgia Southern looked downright bad in a first quarter that couldn’t have gone much worse for the Eagles. New Mexico State led 14-0 and Southern couldn’t seem get Alex anything going on either side of the ball. But the Eagles righted the ship during the second quarter, closing the gap to 14-12 by halftime. They rattled off 17 more unanswered points in the third quarter en route to the 36-28 win. It’s good to see this team grind out a win on a night when things didn’t quite click to perfection. Personally, I felt like the Eagles’ offense had been stymied all night and just never got going. Then I looked at the game stats. Southern rushed for 419 yards as a team and won the time of possession battle. Kevin Ellison and LA Ramsby each eclipsed 100 yards on the ground, and Matt Breida was just four yards shy of hitting the century mark. The difference in the game was the turnover margin. Southern’s defense picked off three Aggie passes and won the overall turnover battle 4-1. It started out looking like a long night for the

Luke Bryan's Farm Tour is your kind of night Get ready to "shake it," because Luke Bryan is bringing his Farm Tour back again this year, this time to Perry Field in Claxton on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Fans of Bryan's will receive an additional treat when former Georgia Southern Eagle and country music star Cole Swindell kicks off the tour as his opening act. Bryan’s Farm Tour began five years ago as a way to give back to agricultural communities by celebrating farmers and offering a fun escape with the outdoor shows. “Being from a rural farming community, the Farm Tour is something I have envisioned for a very long time,” he said “I love the thought of setting up on a farm and building

our own little world, starting small and growing it each time. We can never do enough to bring awareness to the hardworking farmers of this country.” Proceeds from the concerts are made available each year as a scholarship for a student from a farming family who is attending a local college in each community where the shows take place, including Georgia Southern University, where Bryan majored in business management and was a member of Sigma Chi. "We're grateful to those alums who remember Georgia Southern through their gifts of scholarship. The students and families of these scholarship recipients are very

StompFest 2K14 expected to sell out Kappa Alpha Si will defend its title as StompFest champion at the fifth annual Georgia Southern University Homecoming event. Stomp Fest includes acts from various fraternities, sororities and dance groups around campus along with a few local acts not associated with the college. William Hill, a GSU graduate, has returned this year to help coordinate an event that shaped his college experience. "People can expect to be entertained. Chris Prugh is hosting, so

the show is definitely going to be hilarious and a good time," said Hill. Incorporating recent trends in hiphop, stepping is a complex form of dance that requires the use of the entire body to create intricate rhythms. Stepping has roots deep in the African-American fraternities and sororities, but its popularity has since advanced to include a variety of participants. Hill describes the event as "a routine with deep African roots that evolves into a message. All the steps

Rhythm & Brews in the Garden expected to be best yet been attending the fundraiser for years. “I come back because I enjoy the different brews and bands. It’s just a good time to get out and meet people in the community,” Smith said. Missionary Blues is a Savannahbased, juke joint style blues band. They cover genres from traditional blues to juke-joint dance party stompers and New Orleans-influenced melodies. The band was formed in 2013. Its members include Mike English on vocals and guitar, Rigel Crockett on bass and vocals and Micah Goodman on drums and vocals. Sista Rae Rae often joins the band on harmonica, adding a contemporary twist to the band’s sound. Altman is confident that this year’s event will outshine the previous years. Her favorite aspect of Rhythm & Brews is that it always proves to be unforgettable.

“Rhythm & Brews is the Garden at its best. There’s nothing better than great people enjoying good food and having a wonderful time in a beautiful place,” Altman said. The Beaver House has been serving Statesboro’s favorite classic Southernstyle meals since 1989. Modeled after Mrs. Wilkes restaurant in Savannah, The Beaver House offers visitors a unique boarding house restaurant experience. Both garden members and nonmembers are invited to attend the benefit. Tickets include one plate of food and unlimited beverages. All guests must be at least 21 with proper I.D. to attend. All proceeds support the Garden.
