DCA 2023 Field Trials Tally Ho Texas Style!

Windsong Acres Kirbyville, TX

By Gloria LaTour

The DCA National Field Trial (February 28 – March 1, 2023) was held in Kirbyville, Tx at the incredible 50 acre facility named Windsong Acres, owned and lovingly cared for by Dean and Donna Biscamp. They have lived on the property full time since August 2002. Dean is the main grounds caretaker and master rabbit feeder — 50 lbs a day.

Windsong has two field pond pastures, a large flat 30 acre plot of land with an interesting variety of cover and a smaller 15 acre pasture, both of which were worked beautifully over a period of six days by our hounds during DCA 2023 Nationals Week. As veteran field trailers know, both pastures offer unique challenges for hounds and handlers of all skill levels.

The grounds always have more than enough rabbits to create plenty of excitement – and there was plenty.

This year we had lovely weather for the DCA and Mission City Dachshund Club of San Antonio (MCDC) trials and a great turn out of participants from all over the US.

For the DCA National Trial, the entry was a total of 114 dogs. The males ran the first day with 25 Open Dogs running first with Michael Pitisci and Bill Dyer judging, then Field Champion Dogs with an entry of 29 and Heidi Meyers and Leslie Savoye judging. The second day had 25 Open Bitches with Heidi Myers and Bill Dyer judging, followed by 37 Field Champion Bitches judged by Michael Pitisci and Leslie Savoye. Congratulations to this year’s DCA National Field Trial winners! We feel your pride.

The DCA ABSOLUTE went to the Field Champion Dog Rooster and Junior Handler Marshall Tully. It was very exciting and according to Tracy Freeling he is the 2nd Junior Handler to win an Absolute at DCA Nationals. So glad to see young people being introduced into Field trials and having success.

Following the DCA National Trial, MCDC hosted four days of fantastic field trialing (March 2-5) for their first time as a host club during Nationals Week. It was a daunting task but Club members and non-members pitched in to help make it a grand and glorious time. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make these trials a success!

Thank you and congrats to all that came and played in Kirbyville, TX. Tally Ho!

C.Faust he was the breeder, of his winning dog "Rooster," as well as the owner, trainer and handler of his dog that won the "Best in Show" of the Field Trial awards. Samantha Tully, Marshall's mom, said that she really wanted him to pick a different puppy to keep out of this litter, but he insisted on keeping Rooster. Samantha said that Marshall trained and practiced and put all of the field points on Rooster to finish his field champion title.

Dog also placed an impressive 2nd in the Open All Age Dog (OAAD) Stake at the National Field Trial. Red Dog is well on his way to his Field Champion title, largely guided by Marshall. The 2023 National Field Trial was held in Kirbyville, TX, February 28 & March 1 with an impressive entry of 114. As the regular field trialers there know, these grounds can be muddy.... and wet! This year, conditions were more favorable than usual for the trials. While out in the field at the National, Stan made a quick phone call to daughter Laura to establish that Laura was 10 yrs old winning Absolute at the National, while Marshall was 11 years old. Laura hangs onto the title of the youngest to win the National Field Trial.... for now!

What do you remember accomplishing in 7th grade? When Marshall Tully, Texas, is all grown up, he will likely remember winning Absolute at the DCA National Field Trial!

There have roughly been 20- something people to join this elite group, and 11 year old Tully is now one of them. As many people remember though, he is not the youngest to win Absolute at the DCA National Field Trial, that title still belongs to Laura Knoll-Duncan. Then Laura Knoll, daughter of Stan & Tina Knoll, she remembers it well.

Marshall Tully may not be the youngest to win, but unlike Laura,

Winning the DCA National Field Trial was Rooster's second Absolute win, and to top it off, Marshall also took Absolute with Rooster's litter brother “Red Dog” at the Mission City Dachshund Club of San Antonio's Field Trial, two days after the National! Red

Laura, now married & working on a new career, still partipates when she can, and is also a licensed field trial judge for dachshunds. To add another twist to the story, Laura, Marshall & Rooster have all met each other. Laura, and her dad Stan, were the judges that gave Rooster, and Marshall, their first Absolute win.
