Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the June edition. It’s set to be a big month as we all finally have to decide whether we want the UK to remain a part of the European Union or Brexit, as that famous 80’s band ‘The Clash’ once said “Should I stay or should I go?”. I don’t know about you but I am so fed up with being told what to do, and with politicians thinking they can scare me into a decision, I do believe they could all do with lessons in psychology. As I see it life offers no guarantees, it is what we make it, and challenges along the way help us to grow. This is where I break into more song “The sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there’ll be sun....”! On a lighter note, June marks the start of the summer fete season as well as a variety of other annual events, so check out our ‘What’s On’ pages for what’s happening in the local area. If you are interested in venturing further

afield, why not check out my other magazines, they can all be viewed online at www. thevillagedirectory.co.uk. This month, on Sunday the 19th to be precise, we celebrate Father’s Day. Dad’s everywhere have permission to put their feet up and enjoy the love coming their way. It doesn’t require a lot of expense, my husband would be over the moon just to be presented with a tidy garage, and his tools returned to where they should be, as opposed to scattered around the floor! That should be a BIG hint for my son! ~ Debbie

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood

6

Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? It’s certainly the case in my garden! In no time at all they come into growth, produce sizeable leaves and stems and quite often seem to be flowering and then seeding in only a few weeks. Top of my weed hate list is that tiny and innocuous looking one called hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). It produces a rather attractive little rosette of leaves which in no time at all is topped with a short spike with tiny and indeed pretty white flowers. So why do I despise it? It is simply that it spreads by pinging out its seeds within such a short space of time that if you don’t pull them up very promptly you soon have what amounts to a forest of these plants all over your garden. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ and this could mean your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or even your lawn. So what is it that makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities in order to grow in the way they do, and sometimes compete actively with the nearby garden plants that you are so carefully nurturing. • Some of them grow so rapidly that they can create shade and so stunt the growth of smaller plants nearby. • Those which have an almost ground-cover like effect can soon swamp garden plants and cause their growth to be distorted or held back. • Occasionally weeds may also harbour pests or diseases which can then move on to your garden plants. Everyone has some weeds in their garden, but what can you do to minimise the problems they cause, yet avoid spending hours on end with a hoe in your hand or a sprayer at your fingertips? • Always try and get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as you can before

your garden plants start to grow strongly will make weeding easier and also cut down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. My favourite is UK designed with a heartshaped head and a blade on all edges, meaning that you are hoeing every time you pull or push the hoe – it also has a relatively small head to making it easier to hoe in confined spaces, between plants and in gaps in between rows without risk of damage to your plants. It is a hoe we fight over at home; find out more on my website. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed, as this often causes more weed seeds to germinate, and even if these have been lying dormant in the soil for some while, as soon as the soil is disturbed they come to life - so if you are not careful you may make the problem worse. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring many more seeds to the surface and encourages weed seed germination; hence it is best to put up with a few weeds during the growing season. • Whatever you do, it is essential to remove your weeds before they set seed – that old saying of ‘one year’s seeds is seven years’ weeds’ really is true in many cases. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots in one go is my little red-handled weeder – small but built out of stern stuff and by tucking the hook-like head beneath the rosette of leaves

and close to the centre of the plant, I find it easy to pull out the root in its entirety almost every time. See www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. All this means is that you get the area in which you intend to sow prepared well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date. This allows dormant weed seeds to germinate so you can then carefully remove the weed seedlings, and then sow or plant up as you wish. Because you have already removed one major flush of weeds, you tend to have fewer problems later. • Don’t forget the importance of a good deep mulch; many weeds can be kept at bay or the seeds prevented from germinating successfully

the garden

if you cover the soil surface with a mulch which is a minimum of two or preferably three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) deep. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Pantos Can Be Performed Free A whole set of fun and entertaining pantomime scripts has just been published – with a difference. Normally amateur groups, schools etc. have to pay what are called royalties for every performance they give of a play, pantomime or whatever. Now popular shows like Mother Goose, Dick Whittington, Pinocchio and others can be performed by amateur societies free of charge. Chris Webb, of publishers Jones and Webb Creative explains “All the scripts have been performed by professional companies across the UK and are now available to amateurs for the first time. They’re all on Kindle as ebooks at budget prices which INCLUDE the performing rights, as long as a copy is bought for each member of the cast.” Partner, Michael Jones adds “This will be a substantial saving for any amateur group taking advantage of our offer. It will mean more profit for societies’ funds.”

You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been. How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent. Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet. http://blog.petplan. co.uk/12/2015/ advice/dog-traininghow-to-toilet-trainpuppy-housetraining/ By Ann Haldon

Home & Interiors Outdoor Living

By Katherine Sorrell climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids would be the ideal spot for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best set closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or perhaps even an outdoor kitchen.

20

Longer days and (fingers crossed) lots of sunshine mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell The days of formal, look-butdon’t-touch gardens, with manicured lawns and ranks of ordered flowers in borders are – most would say thankfully – long gone. Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; in other words, they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. It sounds wonderful, but if your

garden is in need of an update, just how do you go about achieving this magical blend of practical and pretty? The secret, of course, is in the planning. Look at the bigger picture first. How will you use the space and what do you want from it? To begin with, sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, whose training and experience means they will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of yourself. In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline,

Consider changes in levels – they add interest to a garden and are easier to deal with than slopes – but if you are carrying a tray out from the house, it’s best to avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too, dramatically affecting both how your garden looks and also how it feels underfoot. Will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement the flooring in your kitchen for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, where different types of flooring can differentiate, say, a kitchen from a dining room, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify a few stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences (dull ones can be changed fairly easily, or painted a bright colour for va va voom), hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path, for

example, entwined with fragrant honeysuckle, would make a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can provide a link between two different areas of the garden as well as offering a shaded spot in which to sit.

for cushions. Armed with some basic design principles, the time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the sunshine day after day (we live in hope). And who knows, your efforts may also provide a long-term return. Creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion, and turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may even add value to your property.

Finally, furniture. Take the indoors outside with waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. Meanwhile, if space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away when necessary, or consider building seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat, for example, and you can even build in hinged storage

Cake and Bake Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.

Ingredients: 24 • 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil

• 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins

TIP

You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil.

1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface

and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place

a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5.

3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry

the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and

scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Last year some innovative ideas grew in the Furnival family as to how they could get their wonderful milk out to the local community, they decided to invest in a RAW milk vending machine. I have seen these in several up market food halls but never in a shed, up a country lane, where anyone local can access it at their convenience. These machines are very costly and it was a big gamble they decided to take. What a great idea, they thought after spending many hours and many days researching the whole process, let’s introduce people to OUR MILK as our forefathers knew it. It comes straight from the cow. RAW unpasturised just filtered to remove any bits that should not be in there, and then dispensed straight to you, the consumer, you cannot get fresher or tastier than that.

26

I hope I’ve managed to keep your attention over the last couple of articles, and that my passion for all things local and handmade has shone through. My intention is to raise awareness, stir up interest and curiosity amongst the unconverted, and to provide an opportunity for all these great people to tell their stories. Honeychild Manor Farm owned by the Furnival family for over 50 years is set in beautiful countryside on the Romney Marsh which is well known for its outstanding beauty. It is situated on the edge of the small village of St Mary’s in the Marsh. Having been a working dairy farm for all of those years, and having approximately 1500 acres with 300 Freesian cows, it is the last working dairy farm here on the Marsh. The cows are milked twice a day and it supplies milk to a factory that supplies mostly London corner shops and supermarkets combined with other dairy contributors. The Cows are so well cared for and are out to grass as much as possible in the better months, during the winter months maize and grass is grown especially for silage and hay plus a few extras to keep the cows fed properly throughout the winter.

“The whole process has been a complete labour of love from start to finish, and in fact is still, until we have enough people buying our milk, Amber explains to me”. Amber is the daughter in law and manages the venture, she goes on to say “in fact I am sure, at points, we could have easily thrown in the towel! If it wasn’t for our connection to the land and the farm through the family and the desire to move with the times to survive, it would have been an easy choice to hang up our wellies”. As with many of our passionate producers the motivation to bring to the consumer a LOCAL, FRESH product and the push to adapt to modern times to make ends meet overides the pain of process. The advantages of RAW milk is simple, the fact that the cows are only fed on grass makes it more natural, the fat content is slightly higher because of this, however it contains more vitamin C and vitamin B6 and it increases intestinal absorption of vitamin A, where pasturisation decreases our ability to absorb them. Many people experience digestive problems when drinking pasturised milk, whereas they do not with RAW milk! It has not been proven that there is any probiotic effect but the collective experience of raw milk users proves otherwise. It has also been recorded that given to small children RAW milk can reduce the chances and symptoms of asthma, hayfever and allergy symptoms, these

studies have been carried out across a selection of families and backgrounds and could be attributed to the hygiene hypothesis, that unpasturised milk is less susceptible to contamination than pasturised milk due to it’s probiotic bacteria. So, if you have never experienced Honeychild Manor Farm milk or in fact RAW milk I urge you to jump in your car when you have a spare moment drive down to the farm and taste it for yourself. Take your own container or grab one there and buy some FRESH, REAL, ALIVE and RICH local MILK at

£1 per litre, you will surely not want to go back to supermarket milk again. The milk is also available at two Farmers Markets now. Visit their website for further details: www.honeychildmanorfarm. co.uk or see their facebook page. Please like them and share on social media, and do help my cause to raise awareness and gratitude to this producer for bringing another LOCAL product to our doorsteps. FACT: Romney Marsh Brewery ’s grain leftover from the BEER making process is sent to Honeychild Manor Farm and used to feed the cows, no wonder their MILK is so RICH!!

Summer Pudding Serves 6-8

Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling time This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.

28

Ingredients: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries • 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices mediumsliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate

TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape.

5

6

Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

Learning French on the Romney Marsh In September a new French languagelearning club for children and adults will open on the Marsh at Littlestone, offering children the opportunity to learn French with songs, dances, stories and easy poems, and offering adults either individual or small group tuition with a tailor-made programme focusing on conversation. For school-age children, come along and find out more at the Friday Open Days on 3 June and 10 June from 3.30pm-5pm when you can see the materials used, see testimonials of former students and their families, ask questions and sign up for the sessions. Tuition takes place after school hours in two sessions, from 3.30pm-4pm and then 4.10pm-4.40pm. Numbers are limited to six children per session and the cost is £5 per child per session, £4 for siblings. One-to-one tuition for older secondary school-age students perhaps looking towards examination qualifications starts at 5pm for 45 minutes at £15.

If you are interested in the adult sessions, come along on the same Open Days but between 10am-11am and have a cup of tea/coffee and a chat to discuss your study needs and the kind of programme you would like. The sessions would generally take place in the mornings. The cost for individuals is £30 for one hour, weekly or fortnightly – and with homework given! Small groups will be charged at between £6 and £8 approx. per person depending on the size of the group. 35 The tutor is Mrs Helen Sanderson, who successfully ran the club for over fifteen years in London before moving to the Romney Marsh last year. Helen is a BA(Hons) graduate in French and German, holds a Certificate of Education, a French qualification (the DALF) and is DBS checked (formerly CRB). For contact details see the Petits Polissons advert on this page!

Hobbies Why You’ll Be Bowled Over By This Popular Game By Kate McLelland A team of uniformed players lined up to bowl on a perfectly manicured green is one of the most evocative sights of the summer. Lawn Bowls is a gently-paced team game that – like cricket matches on the village green – seems to reflect a British way of life that has barely changed in hundreds of years. However, if you have always thought that outdoor bowls is a sport that is exclusive to the United Kingdom, you may be surprised to hear that the game is also played in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

36 Lawn Bowls has become popular for two main

reasons: it’s a highly social activity, offering a strong sense of camaraderie within the club itself and the potential to develop wider networks through inter-club matches. It is also accessible to new members, being one of the easiest team sports to pick up (although regulars will tell you it takes time and skill to perfect the techniques required). The game is played in singles, pairs, triples and four player teams. Players use weighted bowls known as ‘woods’ that are heavier on one side, giving them a bias. The bowls are rolled along a flat grass bowling green towards a smaller ball, or jack, with points scored for the woods that stop closest to the jack. The team captain (or ‘skipper’) always plays last and takes responsibility for directing the team’s shots and tactics. It sounds simple, and it is, but the game also relies on precision, patience and – occasionally, when a player drives to dislodge an opponent’s ball from the jack – power. The history of playing bowls goes back to medieval times and the world’s oldest surviving bowling green, in Southampton, was first used in 1299. The best known historical reference to

the sport is probably the story about Sir Francis Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe as the Spanish Armada approached the coast: he was so absorbed in play he is said to have insisted on finishing the game, claiming that he would still have time to beat the Spaniards. While this story may not be strictly true, it serves to highlight the addictive qualities of the game: apprentices, labourers and servants were banned from playing bowls by successive English kings because it was thought to distract men from their duties and lead them into dissolute company. Nowadays England is said to have more than 400,000 bowlers, while Scotland has approximately 100,000. Successful clubs can go on to compete at national and even international level: the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women is held every four years and the next event will take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 28 November to 16 December 2016. Despite its status as one of Great Britain’s most popular sports, up to now Lawn Bowls has had the reputation of being more suitable for the older generation. That view has recently been challenged by an upsurge of interest in Barefoot Bowls, a relatively new Australian variant of the game that has attracted more young people to play. Many Australian clubs have been happy to relax their dress code and membership rules in order to appeal to the next generation of players. Barefoot Bowls uses four players per team with a game length of between 30-60 minutes, although the main objective – to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible – remains the same. In this country Barefoot Bowls has been promoted as a street sport and a tournament held in London last

year drew a crowd of more than 150 students and young professionals. Another more traditional variant of Lawn Bowls is Crown Green Bowls, which adds an additional level of challenge as it is played on an uneven surface. In France the game of Pétanque is played on a hard dirt or gravel surface, either in public parks or dedicated areas called boulodromes. Hollow metal balls are bowled towards a ‘cochonnet’ (which translates as ‘piglet’), which is the Gallic version of the British jack. Pétanque is surprisingly popular in the UK too, and the English Pétanque Association website (www.englishpetanque.org. uk) lists 16 regions where the sport is played. There are thousands of bowling clubs across the UK where you can pick up the basics and eventually go on to play in leagues if you want to take part at a more serious level. The game can be enjoyed at any age (provided you are reasonably mobile) and you can play all year round, as the sport goes indoors in the winter. The British Isles Indoor Bowls Council (www.biibc. org.uk) can provide information on indoor clubs while the sports section of the BBC website (www. bbc.co.uk) provides contact information on the

various Lawn Bowling associations for England, Scotland and Wales, each with its own search facility to help you find a local club. No one is said to be more than 15 miles away from their nearest bowling ground, so next time you come across the classic scene of players assembled on a green, don’t just walk on by: find out how you can become involved in one of the country’s best loved sports.

Beauty A Touch of Indulgence by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy.

38

I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in. Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty essentials at the moment is Mixtress’s It’s All

Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels dried out by central heating or air-conditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic

health & Lifestyle product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day. Clarins’ new Joli Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50, are a real treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second.

implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it. Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own anti-ageing Hyaluronic Acid. The mask helps to tighten, lift and plump skin, so you look fresher-faced in the morning, even if the kids/dog/ partner woke you up several times in the night.

I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare, so I do love a product that makes it easier. Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As

World Blood Donor Day By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual World Health Organisation event. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors, highlighting the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors. WHY SHOULD YOU GIVE BLOOD? It’s easy to find reasons not to donate, but also easy to assume blood will be available if we need it. However, in the UK we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs; around 67% is used to treat medical conditions, 27% in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% to treat blood loss after childbirth. WHO CAN GIVE BLOOD?

40 If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh

over 7 stone 12lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood. Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months. However, some things can affect your eligibility, such as organ transplantation, travel to certain countries and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www.blood.co.uk/who-can-give-blood. PREPARING TO GIVE BLOOD You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation session. To donate, book an appointment or drop in at your next local session. To make your donation as comfortable as possible, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regularly. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid unusually strenuous exercise. • Know your medical and travel history.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DONATE BLOOD Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take over an hour; take a friend or book to distract you if you’re nervous. You’ll be given a drink to keep you hydrated. Your identity and health check details will be confirmed, and your iron levels will be checked by testing blood from your finger. A small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure and the donation site will be cleaned with antiseptic before the needle, connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special scale constantly measures your donated blood until the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm. AFTER YOUR DONATION You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. You should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323. BECOME A LIFESAVER Think of saving a life and you probably imagine rescuing someone from an accident or a fire. But by becoming a blood donor, you could save a life every time you donate. So why not register today?

New ‘Death Tax’ will hit the bereaved In the latest in our regular series of articles on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson, Senior Partner at Pengelly & Rylands Solicitors, talks about your family or Executors know how your ways to prepare for those initial finances work and this can help to relieve the stress and worry at a very difficult time. costs after a bereavement. A proposed sharp rise in Probate fees will heap a logistical and financial burden on Executors and families. Currently, Executors pay a flat Probate Court fee of £215 (or £155 if the application is made through a solicitor), regardless of the size of the estate. Under the new rules, there will be a sliding 42 scale with a cap of £20,000 for estates worth more than £2,000,000. These fees need to be paid before the Executor or family can get their hands on money held within the estate. This comes as a surprise to many of our clients and can create a cash-flow problem which, with the increase in fees, could be a crisis, especially if the majority of the estate is in non-cash assets like property. As the law currently stands, Court fees and any Inheritance Tax attributable to cash assets has to be paid before the Executor can apply to the Court for a Grant of Probate and usually a bank or building society will, if funds are available, release money from the deceased’s account for this purpose. Funeral costs are often a large expense at the same time and, again, the bank will release available funds. One way to ensure there is accessible cash for the family to pay for a funeral, Court fees and Inheritance Tax is to make sure

A joint account with another adult family member can be a good idea – they should not have too much money in them, but could help in the event that one of the account holders dies. The surviving account holder would only have to produce the death certificate to the bank to access the funds. There are risks involved, so it is not a good idea to put a lot of money into joint accounts.

Trusts are also a good way to ensure assets go straight to the beneficiary without going through Probate, but they can be costly and involve a lot of work and possibly Inheritance Tax consequences if the trust is worth more than £325,000. Life insurance can be a good way, dependent on health and age, and can ensure that your dependants have access to funds in the event of your death, but the policy needs to be put into trust to make sure the funds can be directly accessed before Probate. Finally, a funeral plan can also help pay for a funeral in advance to avoid anyone having to pay, but read the small print first, as they do not cover the minister, burial plots or grave diggers. If you would like to speak to someone about any of these issues, please feel free to telephone Pengelly & Rylands on: 01580 762248

Riders will enjoy regular and well stocked feed stations, described by one of our 2015 riders as “the best of any ride I’ve done”. Cyclists can complete the challenge safe in the knowledge that help is always at hand 44 from support and recovery vehicles, mobile mechanics, and first aid, all of whom will be patrolling the ride throughout the day. Panoramic views over Canterbury Cathedral await all finishers, as well as a medal of achievement, plus an exclusive rider goody bag. Cyclists are then invited to enjoy a complimentary sports massage, and can look forward to a BBQ, music, and stands & stalls, as well as complimentary bike cleaning provided by our friends at Bike Tart. Friends and family are encouraged to cheer their cycling stars through the finish line, where there’ll be activities for the kids including a bouncy castle and face painting! Two coaches will be available to transport cyclists and their bikes; one from Canterbury to the start line in Greenwich Park on the morning of the event, and the other taking riders back

from Canterbury to Greenwich Park at the end of the day. Places on both of our coaches are available to book via our website or over the phone. Feedback from our 2015 riders: “One of my favourite sportives” “Would do it again tomorrow!” “Already signed up and looking forward to next year” “Having done the ride five times before, I think that speaks for itself. I’ll be back next year” Cyclists will be provided with route maps, training plans (if required), a Children’s Trust fundraising pack, and GPX and TCX files will also be available on signing up. Single and discounted team entries available & riders are asked to raise a minimum of just £1 per mile cycled to help children with brain injury. To secure your place in our London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge 2016, simply visit The Children’s Trust website at www. thechildrenstrust.org.uk/ltc or give us a call on 01737 364323. Enquiries can also be sent to ltoc@thechildrenstrust.org.uk.

Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy.

46

Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Well-researched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply.

The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laugh-out -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner. The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield

Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.
