A MESSAGE FROM PENNY EGAN, CANCER

WELCOME TO TUXEDO JUNCTION 2017

COUNCIL TASMANIA CEO

Penny Egan

Welcome to our third Tuxedo Junction Charity Ball. I know that you will have a great experience and a night to remember. At the same time, remembering is also an important part of our evening. Every Tasmanian has a cancer story and there will be moments tonight when remembering those we have lost to this insidious disease is likely to evoke an emotional response. We will never forget them, but one of the reasons why you are here and Cancer Council Tasmania exists, is because we all want to make a difference. Your presence here tonight indicates your public support for Cancer Council Tasmania. We are passionate about our Mission to minimise the incidence and impact of cancer on all Tasmanians. Our Mission is not aspirational, it is achievable but we need your assistance to make it happen. The funds raised from this event and other activities each year ensure that we will deliver on our Mission.

has been extremely busy with nearly 5,000 occasions of support being provided to those impacted by cancer, in addition to many clients being transported to treatment appointments, the provision of educational, professional and research scholarships, financial assistance programs and much more. Cancer Council Tasmania is a statewide organisation with offices located in three regions of the State. The importance of extending our reach into communities so that Tasmanians know where we are and how we can help is paramount to ensuring that everyone has access to help, support and information. So many people support us and we want to ensure we make a return on their investment. Thank you for your ongoing support. In helping us you are ensuring that many Tasmanians are benefiting from your generosity now and into the future.

Importantly for all of us, every dollar raised stays here in Tasmania and contributes to our cancer prevention programs, a range of support activities and ongoing investment into cancer research. The past year

A MESSAGE FROM FIONA DAVIS,

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

TUXEDO JUNCTION TASMANIA COMMITTEE CHAIR, 2017

Three of those cancers have survival rates of 90% or higher, and that is thanks to lifestyle education, early detection and advances in research. And it is continuing investment in research that will benefit each of us. Remember, one in three.

Fiona Davis

On behalf of the Committee, I welcome you to this year’s Tuxedo Junction Charity Ball Supporting Cancer Council Tasmania Charity Ball. We are confident that the event planned for you tonight will be fun, informative, and moving. We have designed an event that honours our friend and families in the cancer community; we want you to be able to reflect and remember but also get up and dance in celebration for lives lost to cancer and, more commonly, for those who have made it through a cancer diagnosis and treatment. After all, every Tasmanian has a cancer story. We are all in this together. We are all well-educated as to the prevalence of cancer in our community. When we look at the people sitting immediately on either side of us tonight, we know that one of us will receive a cancer diagnosis by the time we are 75. That is one in three. We know that the most prolific cancers in Tasmania – being prostate, bowel, breast, lung, and melanoma - are those that, if diagnosed early, have improved survival rates in part due to the research that has taken place in our own facilities over the past decade.

4

Every cent raised tonight will benefit Tasmanians. Funds raised are directed to research projects, public awareness campaigns, and support and counselling services for people who have received a cancer diagnoses and their families. These are vital services and include Transport to Treatment for those in our community who live outside the metropolitan areas, support groups and telephone counselling services. For many people, a cancer diagnosis is extremely isolating and so contact with Cancer Council is imperative. The cornerstone to the success of tonight’s event will be our Live Auction. We have put together another incredible array of prizes. The Create A Lasting Legacy item is an opportunity to bid for the Naming Rights to a Research project supported by Cancer Council Tasmania. You can create a lasting legacy that will have a direct impact on cancer outcomes in Tasmania. If you would like any further information about any of the live auction items on offer tonight, please let your table representative know. The Committee all wish to thank you for your attendance tonight. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

“MANY PEOPLE ARE IN THE SAME BOAT AS ME.

EVERY TASMANIAN HAS A CANCER STORY

A CANCER SURVIVOR.”

- BELLA MACDONALD

Bella and Hamish Macdonald

At the age of 9, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Burkitt’s stage II). After surgery to remove the tumor from my ileocecal valve and two lots of chemotherapy, I was put into remission. Compared to others very close to my heart, I was lucky. It seems flippant to say that I had one of the better types of cancer. But it’s true. I was lucky. My chance of survival was high from the start. That’s not to say that my journey wasn’t tough. As I was only 9, I didn’t really fully understand what was happening to me but when I saw my mother break down in tears, I knew that something was not right. People have assumed that because I was so young, my memories would have faded but I will never forget the feeling of the Chemo running through my veins.

everything. Despite this, my mum spent every night I was in the hospital beside me, whilst dad looked after my siblings and everything else. A diagnosis of cancer changes everything. It changed my perspective of life. This year marks 10 years of remission for me and my family, and I personally still live by the moto that You Only Live Once (YOLO). Cancer sucks. There is no doubt about that. But I consider that I was back to being a ‘healthy’ kid only 3 months after my diagnosis thanks to how far doctors and research professionals have come. That’s why I’m sharing my story to help raise more funds for the Cancer Council Tasmania, so there can be more survivors instead of victims.

My parents are farmers and with my 3 younger siblings to care for, they already had a lot to worry about. They could not just drop

A VICTORY IS FELT WIDESPREAD.

CREATE A LASTING LEGACY It is true that everyone has a cancer story. Pain, grief and sorrow – all spread throughout the lives of patients and their loved ones. It’s universal, and it’s heart-breaking. At Mi-tec Medical Publishing, we’re no different. Beloved family, dearest friends, those that we think of as invincible – cancer doesn’t discriminate. For decades now, the war on cancer has been raging. But with every passing year, new developments into cancer research gain us that extra step forward, allowing major victories in cancer treatment and diagnosis. Varying from prevention and screening, to understanding tumour biology and patient care, they’re victories all the same. In the past few years, immunotherapy is gaining an amazing pace, and the success of this new wave of cancer treatment may herald a new beginning. These modern advances are astounding, and with each one, another life is changed. Wonderful or woeful, every cancer story causes a ripple effect. This is why the continual support of cancer research is so important – because of the capacity for one person’s story to influence so many lives. A victory is felt widespread. As is a loss.

AS IS A LOSS.

Yes, everyone has a cancer story. But it is a story filled with so much more than grief and sadness. It’s one filled with hope, love and courage. And it’s this that drives us forward. It’s the hope within the brilliant minds across the globe that make the amazing developments in cancer research possible. It’s the love shown by family and friends in the continual support of those most dear to them. It’s the inexhaustible courage demonstrated by those going through something so unimaginable, providing the much needed strength to everyone around them. It is all of this that defines "a cancer story”. And hopefully, one day, not everyone will have one.

A FINE ROMANCE: THE MAGIC OF FRED ASTAIRE...

After playing to full houses and dazzling crowds across Australia on our recent tour, we are so pleased to be able to bring a little touch of old world glamour to Hobart and to support the wonderful work that is done to help families who are affected by cancer.

A Fine Romance: The Magic of Fred Astaire is an all singing, all dancing tribute to the man who went on to become the most famous dancer of all times. A Fine Romance recreates the legendary dance routines of the era and takes the audience from Fred’s humble beginnings on Broadway, all the way to his Hollywood days and on-screen romances with his many leading ladies, including Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and of course Ginger Rogers. With beautiful costumes, plenty of glitz, extraordinary dancing and of course, the timeless music of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, the Gershwins, with songs including The Way You Look Tonight, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, Cheek to Cheek, Puttin’ on the Ritz, Top Hat, That’s Entertainment and more, this show has something for everyone.

Along with these credits, Joe performed in the 2015 Australian Tour of the BBC’s Dr. Who Symphonic Spectacular and has danced for over 46,000 patrons at various televised Australian cricket matches. Joe also appeared alongside Simon Gleeson, John Woods and Lucy Maunder in the 2016 stage production of Curtains by The Production Company at The Arts Centre Melbourne.

TUXEDO JUNCTION THE SHOW

Jenina’s Dance Workshop

Tas Swing

Established in 1991, Jenina’s Dance Workshop is dedicated, committed and passionate about all aspects of dance and performing arts, with a strong focus of technique and professional standard performances. JDW’s goal is to allow all students the opportunity to perform at their highest potential, achieving maximum results in a disciplined and friendly environment. JDW is a thriving hub for many of Tasmania’s most talented dancers, it has produced many dancers and performers who have continued on to work professionally interstate and overseas.

TasSwing is a locally run, Hobart-based swing dance school, and tonight you’ll be entertained by Lindy Mob, TasSwing’s performance troupe! Swing dancing was THE dance craze for teenagers and adults from the late 1920s until the late 1940s, and dancers flocked to the dance halls of Harlem, Chicago, Los Angeles and more to dance to their favourite big band orchestras and their bandleaders, such as Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Glenn Miller. The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem was perhaps the most famous dance hall, an enormous room the size of a city block with two constantly rotating bandstands, where social dancing was king. Today, TasSwing takes you back to that fantastic era with weekly classes, social dances, events and more. Check out our website, www.tasswing.com.au, or call 0407 940 148 for more details!

TUXEDO JUNCTION GOTTA DANCE 2017 - Charity Ball Supporting Cancer Council Victoria

EVERY TASMANIAN HAS A CANCER STORY My mum Julie Turner was a lot of things to a lot of people – she was funny, smart, wise, gentle, stubborn, supportive and compassionate. She was the centre of attention (which she hated) at family get-togethers because our family life revolved around her. She was also utterly selfless – and wanted no one to worry about her when she became so sick with ovarian cancer. Instead, she spoke often of other cancer patients she sat or lay alongside during day-long treatments in the hospital rather than focussing on her own issues, experiences or fears. Julie fought her disease bravely, refused to give into it, and, even towards the end, continued to fight as hard as she could. She died on 11 October 2013, almost five-years after she was first diagnosed. I am confident that she would be very pleased that ovarian cancer is discussed much more today – and there seems to be much more awareness of it – than when she was first diagnosed. And I know that she would be just as pleased that Cancer Council Tasmania continues its focus on research and community support. She was a beneficiary of that support and spoke highly of the committed people with whom she came into contact. Not only did they support Mum, they also supported our family, and I thank them for it. -Nicolas Turner Julie Turner
