Welcome to Connect The Tauranga Chamber’s new online business magazine Welcome to the newest business publication in Tauranga – the Chamber Connect e-zine! Chamber Connect is your quarterly link to compelling business stories and information. Our aim is to engage business readers so that they feel part of it and interact at every opportunity. We also need to bid our old hard copy Enterprise magazine a somewhat sad farewell. It didn’t offer the same level of engagement the digital option does and our member research showed our readers had different needs for a modern world. It’s a bit like selling an old car that has served you well, but there’s a brand new one about to arrive from the dealer!

Being an online magazine allows us to start bringing you lots of interesting and useful business stories, videos, audio, social media and other online links and resources. We look forward to bringing you these in our upcoming issues. We would love to receive your input, so please tell us what you think and any suggestions on how we can continually improve your reading experience. Best regards Max Mason Chief Executive

Features you can look forward to are a regular in depth interview with a high profile business leader, lots of information on useful events to put in your diary, articles on economic, legal and financial topics, and tonnes of photos of Chamber people having fun.

Student takes on Hong Kong Loren McCarthy, a Tauranga Girls’ College student has been chosen as one of six students to represent New Zealand at the 2013 FedEx/JA International Trade Challenge Asia Pacific Final in Hong Kong. Loren is part of a Young Enterprise Scheme team called Soar Enterprise which has developed a blended chocolate and nut spread. Loren is looking forward to the challenge and hopes to bring back the title. Watch out for these future business leaders!

The title ‘Chamber Connect’ was chosen very deliberately because that’s what it’s all about – connecting you to people, ideas, information, resources, opportunities and activities. The Chamber’s mission is to ‘Build Better Business’ and by connecting you to everything you need, it helps you do just that.

NEW MEMBER PROFILE

The SmartGrowth review involved a community engagement programme of 40 meetings across the Western Bay of Plenty. Updates were made and then submissions were heard on the draft. The Smart Growth Implementation Committee is now finalising the draft. Meet Jason Stockdale, our new Regional Business Advisor. Jason’s role is to assess existing local businesses to determine their capability needs and assist them with a plan to help them grow. This plan will include relevant management upskilling opportunities, connections with advisors and training. Evolution - from a growth management plan into spatial plan. This means that SmartGrowth’s vision for the Western Bay - a great place to live, learn, work and play is shared across not just local government, but other key players including industry, community groups and other organisations. Expand SmartGrowth Partner Forums - The number of agencies and organisations signed up to the SmartGrowth vision and helping to implement the actions is growing. A step change is required in the way SmartGrowth engages with communities through more forums.

Quick fire brand building tips

Strategy Focus on action: 45 of 110 actions are identified as priorities. The first major project is to review the Settlement Pattern using revised growth projections.

Work out what you do that is absolutely unique. Market that! Stop selling and start listening – provide a solution to your clients needs. Challenge how your brand communicates on every level, not just your advertising campaigns. Choose an attitude of excellence in everything you and your team do. Take control of your brand - influence perceptions with a well developed Marketing and PR mix. Deliver, deliver, deliver – under promise and over deliver every single time. Work out the difference between the urgent and the important – and do the latter first! Be the brand that smiles! Make it an absolute pleasure doing business with you, at every encounter!

2013 Westpac Business Awards Launch The Westpac Tauranga Business Awards were launched recently with some excellent speakers. We heard from Murray Denyer, Cooney Lees Morgan representing the judges. Murray was keen to say how much each judge enjoyed the experience and visiting Bay businesses and seeing how they do business. He reiterated that confidentiality was very important to all of the judges.

Understand that PR builds the reputation of your brand. Never underestimate the power of it. Invest in it wisely.

We then heard from Alistair McMahon on the mentoring role that is available to the entrants and how important sitting and talking with someone independent is. This service is available to all businesses entering the Awards.

Make your team your biggest brand champions. The ultimate success of your business will come down to them.

Angela King of Salon One, winner of the very prestigious TrustPower Customer Service Award was next up. She gave a very heartfelt and funny

account of what entering the Awards meant for her and her team. Last year was actually Angela’s second attempt. After building on the things learnt from the first entry she entered again and won the award she wanted! Finally, Anne Pankhurst went through the updated entry process, which will be completed online after the initial nomination process is worked through. This will make entering less time consuming in a time-poor working environment. All questions will be the same, but less arduous to answer and the judges will ask more in depth questions when they visit.

GetOnline.co.nz celebrates 1st birthday and brings 1.3m+ visits to local business websites 11,000+ Kiwi SMEs benefit from Westpac & MYOB initiative In the past year more than 11,000 New Zealand businesses (SMEs) have built their presence online with GetOnline.co.nz, an MYOB and Westpac initiative that provides a website builder that makes it easy for every Kiwi business to get online.

Launched in June 2012, GetOnline.co.nz gives SMEs a free domain name and enables them to build a business website free of charge for one year. In that time participating businesses have received an aggregate of more than 1.3 million visits to their websites. MYOB General Manager Business Division James Scollay says GetOnline.co.nz was designed to assist local SMEs get online in response to finding that

more than two-thirds of New Zealand SMEs didn’t have a business website. “Three quarters of New Zealanders research their purchase decisions online yet only one third have a business website. This means a number of New Zealand businesses are missing out on opportunities. Helping another 11,000 kiwi businesses get online is a great start and we hope to have even more SMEs take advantage of this initiative in the coming year,” he says. New MYOB Business Monitor research found 44% of SMEs with a website said it’s led to more customer enquiries and interest. 36% said they’d increased their income or revenue thanks to their website. Westpac GM Business Banking Mark Fitz-Gerald says the response to date has been fantastic.

businesses (SMEs),” Mr Fitz-Gerald says. “The response reflects the demand for companies to be visible and become more competitive online. It’s made a material difference to the number of New Zealand businesses operating online.” The programme was supported with nationwide workshops, and Westpac is providing further support through Bizpac, a bundle of tailored banking solutions for SMEs. Mr Fitz-Gerald says GetOnline.co.nz is part of Westpac’s Grow NZ initiative and another way the bank is helping local companies develop their business and encouraging smart investment for growth. According to MYOB research, businesses that regularly update their website, have an image gallery and social media link, drive five times more e-commerce transactions than their competitors.

We get up close and personal with Lain Jager - CEO, Zespri candidates for the CEO role which I would like to see through before I step out of the role. After Zespri? I don’t know. My sense is another Executive role, but who can see the future? What are you most proud of?

Delivering business results is hugely rewarding but what really pushes my buttons is when people around me, including my sons and my team at work, are in the zone performing, growing and really enjoying themselves.

“As you continue to be

promoted it is most unlikely you will achieve excellence through your own endeavour but by harnessing the energy of others. In the end your success will come from the success of your team.

If you could have dinner with four influential people who would they be?

Barack Obama, Ben Bernanke, Angela Merkal and Pope Francis. How do you deal with stress and pressure in your role?

I do not feel very much stress or pressure. I seek to make the role simple by reducing it to two fundamental questions (1) Where is our growth going to come from? (2) What combination of organisational capabilities do we need to sustain and develop competitive advantage and therefore margin over time? I delegate a lot which gives me time to think about the best questions and evaluate performance. What is your next career challenge after this one?

In November this year I will have been at Zespri for 13 years and CEO for five. In general my view is that a good tenure for a CEO is between five and seven years because after that the change curve tends to flatten. I have some objectives around building green profitability, successfully commercialising G3 after the impact of Psa, completing the evolution of the sales and marketing structure, and developing internal Tauranga Chamber Of Commerce | 6

Have your qualifications been important in your career?

Education has been really important because through education I think we develop the ability to see patterns and make sense of the world around us, to summarise information and communicate effectively, to think really critically. What is the best part about your job?

I think I can answer that for many Zespri employees when I say it’s working for the NZ kiwifruit growers who are a great community with a genuine vision for the future and the determination to achieve a sustainable fruit return and therefore a sustainable industry for the future. Where do you see Tauranga in the next 10 to 15 years?

Continuing to grow strongly. It’s a great location without the mind boggling housing and infrastructure issues affecting Auckland. The Port is important and our schools are good. Tauranga is well positioned for the future.

What advice would you give someone going into their first leadership position?

Most people are promoted because they have worked hard and delivered good outcomes for their boss. As you continue to be promoted it is most unlikely you will achieve excellence through your own endeavour but by harnessing the energy of others. In the end your success will come from the success of your team. What do you feel a key element is to having a successful team environment?

I think “environment” is the key word. Almost invariably people want to do a great job – environments that support teams are those with strong context and shared goals and values. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I grew up working relatively hard in small businesses owned by my parents. I had no idea what I wanted to be but I had a work ethic, a belief that life is tough and a desire to achieve. If you could have a super power what would it be?

Selfishly to fly or time travel. But if I had to make a choice it would be to heal. Who has been the most influential person in your life?

I think Debra my wife and Cai and Jed my sons have wrought the most change on me. Professionally I have had some great bosses who I have learned a lot from.

If you could change anything in Tauranga what would it be?

If you could have created anything in the world what would it be?

Tauranga is projected to grow strongly at about 1.4% annually. That sort of growth will require a proactive approach to investment and development to deliver a liveable city. While I think the Mayor and City Council have done a very good job of moving us forward, historically this has been in the face of opposition by some individual city councillors with a less progressive agenda. I would urge all rates payers to vote for progressive city councillors – otherwise we risk getting servants of narrow agendas in important roles.

Aside from a cure from Psa!, it would be a sustainable non-carbon based energy source because in my view, that will be antecedent both to dealing effectively with climate change and also the next big step in lifting productivity which will be important to offset the drop in the standard of living that will otherwise almost inevitably follow changing global demographics (population growth and aging).

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Other than your current position what would be your dream job?

It’s a huge privilege to be CEO of Zespri. After Zespri - I don’t know.

It’s time to enter the Business Awards We catch up with last year’s winner Tui to hear about their experience.

Image: Tui Products Managing Director Don Forgie and Westpac’s Steve Atkinson (L-R). Image Courtesy of Wayne Tait Photography.

Tui Products Ltd is a proudly New Zealand owned and operated company. For the past few years Tui has been helping Kiwis to get fantastic results in their gardens, in 2010 they were awarded the centenary trademark! Another milestone for Tui was their win as Tauranga Westpac Business of the Year in 2012. Based in Mount Maunganui, with offices in Palmerston North and Christchurch, they have 70 team members. Originally based in Palmerston North, they joined with Blended Fertiliser in Tauranga, and then bought Debco New Zealand (Auckland). The existing Blended Fertiliser site in Tauranga was continued, and expanded. Infrastructure like the port, the location of their raw material sources and the proximity to Auckland (where many of their customers and some suppliers are based) make it a logical location to base their business. For their team, the Mount Maunganui

Tui are currently in the process of building a 10,500sqm purpose-built building in a joint venture with Wallace Developments, after their existing working space was creating inefficiencies due to limited space. They have signed a 99-year lease with Mangatawa Papamoa Blocks Inc, and have recently prepared 6ha of land on Truman Lane for industrial development. Tui Products is a nationwide leader in manufacturing, supply and distribution of quality garden products and birdseed to independent garden centres, big box retail, pet stores and home brand to FMCG. Beyond the Tui label, they also represent many other brands and are the distributor for several international gardening brands. Tui are committed to providing products and advice that are suited to the New Zealand environment and make things simple for Kiwis. This commitment is reflected in the expansion plans into new areas and categories. One of those developments is the introduction this winter of two exciting new products: Tui Firemagic Firestarters – replacing both kindling and newspaper when lighting a fire these are made from recycled cardboard. Complimenting these are their Tui Firemagic Briquettes, made from 100% recycled NZ milled wood.

Tui found winning the Westpac Tauranga Business of the Year Award a fantastic way to recognise the whole team’s efforts. For them this third party endorsement, a product of a very positive culture, is a great opportunity to congratulate all those involved. The awards raised their company profile within the community, where previously they have flown under the radar to some degree. The company received a number of congratulatory messages from suppliers, local businesses and the community which were very much appreciated. For Tui, the Award’s process provided an opportunity to reflect on the business and progress made. Getting to discuss the business with the judges and receive their feedback in areas such as marketing, was also very valuable. Their tips to businesses thinking of entering the Awards are to take this as an opportunity to reflect on the changes and growth of your business since you started. Also, make sure you can quantify your results. Tui is certainly a company worth watching for the future and we welcome their expansion in the local market.

Legal Careers with a Difference Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is home to a unique cluster of applied law programmes including real estate, immigration advice, legal executive and conveyancing. Recognising the needs of increasing numbers of working people retraining or upskilling, the Polytechnic offers all four programmes through a range of blended delivery methods – from full and part-time through to fully online. Dr David Lyon, Head of School Business, said the suite of programmes was designed with providing a one-stop shop for legal expertise.

knowledge and professional qualification to work as a conveyancer. “The Polytechnic delivers New Zealand’s only accredited Diploma in Conveyancing. While still a relatively new profession in New Zealand, conveyancing is experiencing exponential growth due to the increased activity in the housing market.” NZ IMMIGRATION ADVICE Being the only New Zealand provider of the Graduate Certificate in New Zealand Immigration Advice has seen the Polytechnic inundated with applicants for the current year. The Graduate Certificate qualification is a legal requirement for anyone applying for a licence to practice as a New Zealand immigration adviser. It’s also a great qualification for people who work in international education, travel or human resources, helping to build knowledge of immigration matters.

“Years ago people went directly to a lawyer for anything legal, now there are other and more cost effective options,” said David. CONVEYANCING Conveyancing (the legal transfer of a property title) is one such profession that is no longer just the domain of lawyers. Developed in conjunction with the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers, the Diploma in Conveyancing equips graduates with the skills,

“We’ve had a fantastic response to this programme – so much so that we’ve had to suspend enrolments until 2014,” said David. “The benefits to graduates are instant and we’re already seeing some great success stories.”

or for those wishing to embark on a legal career as a legal executive, paralegal or legal personal assistant. REAL ESTATE Rounding off the four is the National Certificate in Real Estate programme. “Rising confidence in New Zealand’s property market has seen buoyant sales from around the country, especially in Auckland and Christchurch, and this is now filtering down into the regions,” says David. “Locally, real estate companies have remarked on the renewed interest in property which we anticipate will flow on for those wanting to work within the industry.” A career in real estate appeals to a wide cross section of people with graduates of the programme including a former police woman, an interior decorator, a truck driver and administrators. What all these graduates have in common is their interest in property and wanting to get the best deal for their clients. No matter what your legal bent is Bay of Plenty Polytechnic has got you covered. Visit www.boppoly.ac.nz today for more information.

LEGAL EXECUTIVE The Polytechnic also offers the NZ Law Society Legal Executive Diploma. The popular programme is now delivered in Auckland as well as Tauranga and is available both full and part-time. This is an ideal programme for people already working in law firms who want to get a qualification
