Turner Carroll Gallery, a dynamic force in contemporary art for over three decades, remains steadfast in its mission to discover and exhibit significant works from around the world. Founded by Tonya Turner Carroll and Michael Carroll, both seasoned art professionals, the gallery has consistently championed gender and racially diverse museum-collected artists addressing pressing societal issues. Committed to contributing to the contemporary art world, Turner Carroll Gallery authors monographs, collaborates with prestigious institutions, and facilitates exhibitions. In a groundbreaking move, the gallery opened CONTAINER in October 2022, a novel art space in Santa Fe housed within a unique shipping container building. CONTAINER redefines the art exhibition experience, seamlessly blending an art institution, commercial gallery, and private collection. It introduces a fresh vision for showcasing art with a focus on hosting touring museum exhibitions, offering collectors a direct opportunity to acquire works from these institutional showcases. Turner Carroll Gallery’s enduring dedication to diverse, impactful art continues to shape the art landscape both locally and globally.

Jeremy Biggers
Jeremy Biggers in front of his Martin Luther King, Jr. mural in Dallas (Photo: Jesus Ayala) Jeremy Biggers draws inspiration from his personal experiences and the way they shape his perspective of the world. His artwork explores themes of identity, particularly in relation to his experience as a Black man in America. Through his unique visual language he employs his signature “hyper-red” color to convey a sense of aspiration and a rejection of complacency. The dots that are a recurring element in Biggers’ work represent his mother and the ladybugs that visited him after her passing. These symbols hold a deep personal significance for the artist and add an additional layer of meaning and separation to his pieces. Through his art, Biggers seeks to establish a connection with the viewer, encouraging sincere conversation and facilitating the discovery of new perspectives. His hope is that his work will resonate with viewers, and inspire them to explore their own identities and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. Jeremy Biggers’ artwork is a testament to the power of personal experiences and the ability of art to spark meaningful dialogue and promote personal growth.

Judy Chicago
Judy Chicago (Photo: Donald Woodman) Judy Chicago, born July 20, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, embodies the roles of artist, author, feminist, educator, and intellectual over a career that spans five decades. Her indelible influence is evident in her inclusion in hundreds of publications worldwide. In the 1970s, Chicago pioneered the first feminist art program in the United States at California State University, Fresno, and catalyzed a transformative era for feminist art and education. This milestone underscores Chicago’s enduring impact on shaping the narrative of art, not merely confined to her visual oeuvre but also extending into pedagogy and cultural evolution. At the heart of Chicago’s artistic legacy stands The Dinner Party, a magnum opus permanently housed in the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Revered as the inaugural epic feminist artwork, The Dinner Party celebrates women’s historical achievements. Chicago’s work includes numerous other notable projects such as the International Honor Quilt, Birth Project, Powerplay, and The Holocaust Project. Judy Chicago has enjoyed two career retrospectives. One at the de Young Museum of Art, and one currently at the New Museum, NY.

FAILE (Photo: Matthew A. Eller) FAILE, the Brooklyn-based artistic collaboration of Patrick McNeil (born 1975) and Patrick Miller (born 1976), has been a fixture in the art scene since its establishment in 1999. Known for a multimedia practice that explores duality through a fragmented style of appropriation and collage, FAILE’s iconic works have graced prestigious institutions worldwide including the Tate Modern in London, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. The duo’s artistry, encapsulated by the anagrammatic moniker “FAILE” derived from their first pseudonym, “a life,” reflects a symphonic fresco of recurring patterns, sentences, and characters. These elements are frequently exhibited in the foreground or background of their creations, and form a cohesive narrative that evolves with each new piece. Living in New York, the artists often revisit and expand upon their past works, creating a dynamic, self-updating colorful world that offers a reflection of American—perhaps Western—pop culture. FAILE’s nuanced approach unveils archetypes and structures within popular representations that are subtly altered and turned inside out like a revealing glove, thereby contributing to a perpetual motion of cross-referenced creations that continually add complexity to their evolving body of work.

Clarence Heyward
Clarence Heyward (Photo: Clarence Heyward Studio) Clarence Heyward was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He is a painter and collagist whose work explores notions of the Black American experience. Heyward tackles cultural truths and stereotypes and questions identity in his work. He “paints his truth” and uses people of color as subjects in his paintings as an homage to his culture. Among his most prevalent subjects are members of his own family as well as himself. His intimate knowledge of his family’s experience informs his fresh and direct approach to contemporary figuration. He often uses the chroma key green color to reference the video concept of a green screen, upon which any background or reality can be superimposed. His use of the chroma key in his recent paintings evokes a sense of possibility within identity and a recognition that who we see is a function of who we are as observers. Heyward is the recipient of notable awards including a Brightwork Fellowship residency at Anchorlight Raleigh in 2019-2020, an Emerging Artist in Residence at Raleigh Artspace in 2021, the Ragdale Artist Fellowship in 2022, was the Artist in Residence at NC State University in 2022, and was an Artist in Residence at Alfred University in 2023. His work is in the collections of several notable private and public institutions, including that of Jason Rubell.

Sam Lao
Sam Lao portrait (Photo: Sam Lao Studio) Sam Lao is a multidisciplinary artist based in Dallas, TX. Despite being dubbed early on in life as a creative child, Lao spent much of her upbringing trying to find a more “acceptable” career path. A University of Texas at Arlington graduate with a BFA in Visual Communications, Lao worked with multiple artistic mediums post-graduation, most notably painting and music. Loa turned to fiber art in 2020 to combat the isolation of the global pandemic, and this led her to tuft. Lao’s practice explores the interaction between color, texture, and pattern, as they relate to the constant flow of creating and the actions required to bring thought to fruition. This process considers the ever-shifting nature of an idea from its inception to its ultimate consumption. Through her craft she examines the abstract nature of what it means to be creative. Lao was reprimanded many times in her youth for getting too close to the artwork during museum visits, and the tactile qualities of her current work subvert the adage of “do not touch the artwork” by inviting the viewer to do just that, and, in turn, making a visual experience a physical one as well.

Hailing from a lineage of distinguished Pueblo potters including his mother Seferina Ortiz, and grandmother Laurencita Herrera, Ortiz’s innovative work transcends traditional boundaries. His captivating clay creations have graced museum exhibits across the globe from the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, to the Stedelijk MuseumHertogenbosch in The Netherlands, and showcase his deep connection to his Cochiti Pueblo roots. A multifaceted artist, Ortiz seamlessly integrates fashion, video, and film into his repertoire, expanding the narrative of Pueblo culture. From laser-cut leather jackets, to vibrant T-shirt collections like “Colorblind” which pay homage to the historic Pueblo Revolt of 1680, Ortiz’s designs encapsulate the spirit of indigenous storytelling. His artistic journey has elevated Pueblo pottery to new heights, and includes collaborating with fashion icon Donna Karan. As Ortiz continues to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional, he and his work serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of Pueblo culture on the global stage. Ortiz will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Lowe Museum in Miami in 2024.

Swoon
Swoon (Photo: Bryan Derbala) Renowned under the moniker Swoon, Caledonia Curry stands as a trailblazing force in street art, and is noted for being the first woman to attain widespread recognition in this traditionally maledominated sphere. Her artistic journey unfolded on the vibrant streets of New York in 1999, a period coinciding with her studies at the Pratt Institute of Art. There, Curry launched her distinctive approach, adorning building facades with temporary paper portraits, a practice that aimed at democratizing art and reclaiming public spaces within the urban landscape. A mid-career retrospective of Curry’s work is currently on view at the Taubman Museum of Art. Over two decades, Curry has explored human complexity through intimate portraits, immersive installations, and community-based projects, and actively works toward a more just and equitable world.

Nadya Tolokonnikova / Pussy Riot, still from Putin’s Ashes, 2023 Conceptual multimedia artist and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova is the creator of Pussy Riot, a global feminist protest art movement. She was sentenced in 2012 to two years’ imprisonment following the anti-Putin performance Punk Prayer. The Guardian named Punk Prayer among the most important art pieces of the 21st century. Nadya Tolokonnikova published a book Read and Riot: Pussy Riot’s Guide to Activism, co-founded the independent news service and media outlet Mediazona, co-founded the art-collecting collective Unicorn DAO, and raised over $7 million for Ukraine. She spoke before the US Congress, British Parliament, European Parliament, appeared as herself on season 3 of House of Cards, and appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 2012 as one of the most influential people of the year.
