PREVIEW: The 2018 season was historic for the Denair High football program. The Coyotes notched a Sac-Joaquin Section title (D-VII) and a State Championship (D-VII AA). They only fell once last year — to the team that went on to play in the Division-VI Sac-Joaquin Section title game, Ripon Christian. Other than that mishap, no team that faced them last fall was able to match their intensity, which included a relentless ground attack and the best line in the Southern League. Following their monumental run this past fall, coach Anthony Armas and his squad feel confident of possibly making another successful run, maybe not like last year, but a good one that has them returning multiple players that stood well above their peers just a year ago. Dylan De Silva, Carlo Morales, Derek Starkey, Elvis Silva, Will Knox and Ulises Corrales are those returners. “We’re really trying to put last year in our rearview mirror,” said Armas. “It was a great year. We had a lot of fun last year, but our players and staff know that it’s over and we’re all looking forward to writing a new chapter for our program. “Our goal has always been to make a run at the league title and go from there,” said Armas. also returning our QB (Elvis Silva) and FB Dylan De Silva,” he added. “We have a great group of young men this year and we’re really excited about the upcoming year.” Last year’s success saw the Coyotes finish the year ranked No. 280 in California. Heading into this season, they are currently ranked no. 272 in the preseason rankings on Maxpreps.com.
