Map of Tenerife

Welcome! You may think you are on a normal holiday. However, what you might not know is that you are about to begin an adventure which will take you to endless beaches, to parks full of wild animals, to volcanoes you have never heard of…You will be able to experience fantastic rides, go whale watching and discover the most spectacular places on the island. To make everything easier for you, an explorer has already visited these places and has left clues and notes in this book. What’s more, there are some places on the island where you will find people who know each and every corner very well and every hidden treasure: the Infotén Network of Tourist Information Offices. Get ready for an adventure. Welcome to Tenerife! 5

With the animals The mystery explorer who will be showing you the best places on the island has left a clue on these pages. His message is: “You will find me among killer whales, dolphins, tigers, crocodiles… and all sorts of birds”. Has the explorer gone mad? There are no crocodiles or tigers here! And killer whales are far, far away, in the sea...! Where will the explorer take you now? We are going to give you some help. There is a place in the north of the island where you can live a different adventure every day. It is called Loro Parque, in Puerto Loro Parque de la Cruz, and yes: there are tigers and crocodiles, killer whales, dolphins and penguins, monkeys, iguanas and sloths, flamingos, cranes and hundreds of parrots. Incidentally, do not leave without seeing Katandra Treetops, which means “the song of the birds on Avda. Loro Parque, s/n, Punta Brava 922 37 38 41 www.loroparque.com Mon-Sun: 8:30 a.m-6:45 p.m

For example, the Jungle Park in Arona, where you can watch eagles, macaws and other exotic birds in action… they fly so close, you can almost reach out and touch them! There are many more places where you can see exotic animals, and even feed them and play with them, such as Monkey Park, in Los Cristianos, where you can see chimpanzees, lemurs, capuchin monkeys... as well as snakes such as pythons and enormous wild animals including crocodiles. It is really great fun!

And if you feel like camel or horse riding, the mystery explorer has taken his time to make a list of the most adventurous places: Camello Center, Centro Hípico de Alcalá, Tenerife Camel Park, Casa del Camello, Centro Hípico de la Caldera del Rey and Oasis del Valle. You can find more details on the final pages. You may not have enough time to see them all, but don’t worry. Just choose your favourite place and have a great time.

But our mystery explorer has left another clue and it is very, very strange… It only says, “Pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales”. Are you wondering what these strange words mean? Let us help you.

They are just some of the species of whales and dolphins which live in sea surrounding the Tenerife. Did you think that all animals lived in parks and zoos? Our sea is full of life. If you would like to see them, you can go on a boat trip that will lead you to an entire pod of whales. You can also see dolphins jumping and playing near the boat! You will feel like a pirate captain, sailing around the coast and seeing striking cliffs that drop down to the sea, just like an adventure film. There are boat trips for all tastes; you only have to choose your favourite. If you look on the directory page, you will find more information.

Here, you can see magnificent dolphin shows and enjoy many exciting attractions… If you travelled to Tenerife by plane, you must have seen the Island from up above in the sky. Sea, mountains… and how many beaches? When you see them, you might think that our coasts were the stage for naval battles? If you look at the coast of Santa Cruz, you can imagine the setting of the battle in which the English Admiral, Lord Nelson, was hit by the famous cannon, “the Tiger”, as well as all sorts of pirates and corsairs which sailed these waters many years ago in search of 14

treasure. There are so many beaches in Tenerife that the mystery explorer has made a list of just a few of them, the most enjoyable ones. There are beaches all round the Island, with exotic volcanic sand, or golden sand; small beaches or large family-friendly beaches; all with a wide variety of fun activities…Below is a map with the best beaches to enjoy with your family: Playa la Arena

Adventures in the City The Island, as you have seen, is very large if you try to visit every Pueblo Chico one of its treasures. But there is a way of getting to know it all in just one place that is great fun. This place is Pueblo Chico, in La Orotava, a theme park where you will be able to see a miniature version of Tenerife and its most interesting sights. You can walk down the tiny streets like a giant, much taller than the buildings‌

Cno. Cruz de Los Martillos, 62 Autopista Norte, TF-5 Salida 35 922 33 40 60 www.pueblochico.com Mon-Sun: 9 a.m-6 p.m

You can also visit the kind of place that older people like, such as museums and opera houses, because many of them have activities that are specially designed for you. In Santa Cruz, you will find the Tenerife Auditorio, where there are special 18

Did you know we also have a museum where you can learn and play at the same time? This is the Museum of Science and the Cosmos in La Laguna. You can even become a scientist for a day!

And, in Arona, there is another place that the mystery explorer has visited. It seems that he had such a good time that he forgot to leave a clue. But it doesn’t matter; we will show you where it is. 23

From every corner of Tenerife, you can see Mount Teide. This giant mountain is, in fact, a volcano. But, don’t panic. There is no danger of an eruption. Mount Teide and other volcanoes have erupted in the past and that is why Tenerife has so many volcanic landscapes: look at the volcanic rocks and Estación del Teleférico del Teide stones, lava tubes, seawater pools made of lava, etc… 922 010 445 Mon-Sun: 9 a.m-4 p.m

In the Teide National Park, there are so many unusual landscapes; you might think you are on another planet. Plants which manage to grow through volcanic soil, like the “Mount Teide broom” and the impressive “Red Tajinaste”. There are also reptiles such as the Tenerife lizard and the Tenerife wall gecko, which manage to survive the harsh conditions of the environment; birds such as the Kestrel or the Blue Chaffinch… You can also reach the summit of Mount Teide by cable car, on a nail-biting journey up the highest mountain in Spain or get to know the history and nature of the area at the Portillo Visitors’ Centre. 24

Would you like to see something totally different? Let’s change the scenery. In the Anaga Rural Park, you will find laurel woodlands similar to those in fairy tales, as well as mountainsides covered in Euphorbias. land, there is a network of paths that you can find out about at the Infotén Network of Tourist Information Offices. In the Teno Rural Park, you can see spectacular landscapes that drop down to the coast and a large lighthouse which has seen hundreds of ships pass by. Coves dressed in lovely tones of blue and green water; steep mountainsides, volcanic plains… See how plants change as you go up into the mountains, ending at the splendid cliffs of Los Gigantes. You can find all kinds of landscapes in just one place. If there was an “Olympics” for nature sports, it would undoubtedly take place in Tenerife, be26

cause here you can do all kinds of outdoor sports. In several special protected areas, enormous volcanic rocks hide a thousand routes for the most intrepid climbers. In Pedro González Park, better known as La Vega, in La Laguna, you will also find a Rockodrome, circuits for bikes and skating facilities and perfect hiking paths that wind through woods and mountains. The winds off our coasts billow the sails of boats and in certain places in the south, these winds are so strong that certain areas have become a paradise for windsurfing and kite-surfing. What’s more, surfing can be enjoyed all along the coast of Tenerife. You can see how young people ride large waves… Tenerife is a huge playground. 27

Are you one of those people that falls asleep by counting stars? Tenerife is the perfect place for observing stars, nebulas and even the Milky Way! Tenerife is arguably the best place in Europe for star gazers. Above two thousand metres in height, the atmosphere is very clear and transparent: this is why we have one of the most important solar observatories in the world. So now you know: ‌learn to become an explorer of the Universe.

28

29

How we live on Tenerife We can see our mystery explorer dressed in a strange way! He is wearing one of the traditional costumes of the Canary Islands, which are still worn during religious festivals and dances. It is quite a spectacle to see thousands of people dressed in these traditional outfits. At religious festivals or romerĂas, it is possible to see many age-old traditions: floats pulled by oxen; typical food; well-known music such as isas and folĂas and, of course, unique and enjoyable dances.

30

Most romerías and country dances in Tenerife take place between April and August. Some of interest include La romería de Tegueste, and other romerías in La Orotava, La Laguna, Santa Cruz, Adeje and Garachico, among others.

31

It is going to be virtually impossible to recognise the Mystery Explorer. He has dressed up for the carnival, the most well known international fiesta on Tenerife. If you are here during the festival, you will see how crowds fill the streets with the craziest and most original costumes‌ Dress up as a princess, a superhero or a pirate! The most important carnival is the one held in Santa Cruz, but you can find exciting carnivals in many other places such as Puerto de la Cruz, Candelaria, Santiago del Teide and Los Cristianos. 32

But we still haven’t spoken about filling your stomach. Do you like good food? Well you’re really going to have a great time here. Tenerife has superb traditional food and unique ingredients. Ask a chef at any restaurant: our potatoes are creamy and succulent; our fish is freshly caught from the sea, straight to your table and of course our tasty cheeses and bananas are great at any meal. We also have an endless menu of desserts. During your holiday in Tenerife you will have the chance to try some of these delicacies and if you visit any of our farmers’ markets you will be able to see a selection of local produce. 33

And you may well have heard about gofio, a meal based on toasted ground cereals, which has been produced on the Canary Islands for hundreds of years. It is very nutritious and can be prepared in a number of different ways. You can even have gofio for breakfast, mixed with milk. It will give you energy for the whole day

34

See you soon We are sure you have had a good time. You have had time to see the whole island, go up Mount Teide, enjoy the attractions, go whalewatching and take a dip in the sea or a swimming pool. Now you know the Island like a real explorer. We are very sorry to see you go‌ but you can always come back. Tenerife will have lots more fun awaiting you 35
