Su privilegiada situación, a tan sólo 10 km. del Aeropuerto Internacional Alicante-Elche, a 17 km. de Alicante y a 65 km. de Benidorm, también son buenos argumentos. HISTORIA El mar ha marcado la historia de Santa Pola. Los íberos construyeron un recinto amurallado en el s.IV a. C., para comerciar con los griegos de Focea. Los romanos potenciaron un puerto clave en el Mediterráneo para el comercio marítimo, el Portus Illicitanus, que contaba con todos los elementos de una ciudad: una factoría de salazón de pescado, almacenes, la Casa Romana de El Palmeral, mercado, necrópolis, etc. Desde el s.XVI, el Castillo-Fortaleza y las Torres Vigía protegían a la población de los piratas berberiscos que se refugiaban en la isla de Tabarca. Una vez expulsados en el s.XVIII, se estableció definitivamente el núcleo de población que tomaría el nombre de Santa Pola.

History From time immemorial different cultures have left their archaeological remains in Santa Pola. The Iberians: a walled settlement from the 4th century BC. The Romans: a factory to make salted fish, some stores, a Roman Villa in “El Palmeral” and a port which was the key to maritime trade: the “Portus Illicitanus”. From the 16th century the Castle and the Watch Towers were built to protect the population from the Barbary pirates, who took refuge in Tabarca Island. Once they were expulsed, in the 18th century, the centre of population named Santa Pola was established.

CENTRO CULTURAL CASTILLO-FORTALEZA Interesting places in the Castle

CASTILLO-FORTALEZA El Castillo-Fortaleza es una magnífica muestra de la arquitectura militar renacentista del s.XVI. Proyectado en 1553 por el ingeniero italiano Juan Bautista Antonelli, su coste fue sufragado por D. Bernardino de Cárdenas, Virrey de Valencia, dentro del "Plan para la defensa de costas del Reino de Valencia”. Con su estructura defensiva hizo frente a los ataques piratas de los berberiscos que asolaban el litoral. Al finalizar las obras en 1557, una guarnición compuesta por 33 personas y sus familias se instalaron en su interior: el alcaide, un alférez, treinta soldados y un capellán, que vivían en los muros del Castillo. Con el paso del tiempo, los usos civiles sustituyeron a los militares. El 9 de julio de 1859 el Castillo pasó a propiedad del Ayuntamiento, realizando obras de reforma, encaminadas a que el edificio perdiera su carácter de fortaleza. Desde entonces, el recinto ha sido utilizado para el desempeño de funciones de diversa índole, convirtiéndose en sede de la Casa Consistorial, Cuartel de la Guardia Civil, Juzgado de Paz, hospital y hasta una improvisada plaza de toros. Actualmente, el Centro Cultural Castillo-Fortaleza alberga las siguientes instalaciones: Museo del Mar, Sala Municipal de Exposiciones, Salón de Actos “Baluarte del Duque de Arcos” y Capilla de la Virgen de Loreto.

Fortress-Castle The Fortress-Castle is a beautiful example of Renaissance military architecture of the 16th century. The Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli planned it in 1553 and Don Bernardino de Cárdenas, Viceroy of Valencia, according to the “Programme for the coastal defense of the Kingdom of Valencia”, paid for its construction. Thanks to its defensive structure, the castle faced Berber pirate attacks that razed the coasts. When the building work was finished, a garrison of 33 people and their respective families settled into the castle: the governor, a second lieutenant, thirty soldiers and a chaplain, who lived within the walls of the castle. As time went by, civil uses replaced military ones. From July 9th 1859, the castle was owned by the town council that carried out alterations so that the building would lose its military nature. Since then, the place was used for many different purposes such as Town Hall, Guardia Civil Headquarters, Peace Court, hospital and even an improvised bullring. Nowadays, the Fortress-Castle Cultural Centre houses the following facilities: the Maritime Museum, the Exhibition Hall, the Duke of Arcos Bastion and the Virgen de Loreto Chapel.

ETNOGRAFÍA DEL MAR Y LA PESCA La pesca ha sido siempre una importante fuente de riqueza por si misma, pero alcanza dimensiones industriales cuando el hombre tiene un mayor conocimiento del mar y sabe valorar sus recursos y explotarlos. El mar como escenario, el hombre de mar como protagonista y el barco como herramienta, son los tres elementos sustanciales que conforman la Historia Marítima y hacen de ella parte fundamental de la Historia de la Humanidad. Todo ello se refleja en el Museo del Mar, haciendo que los materiales objeto de su exposición entren en relación dialéctica con su entorno. ETNOGRAFÍA DE LA MÚSICA Y EL MAR Sección compuesta por cinco salas dedicadas a la Música en Santa Pola y a los restos arqueológicos de la Torre del Cap de l’Aljub, predecesora del actual Castillo-Fortaleza.

The Maritime Museum HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY It is presented as a monographic exhibition, focussing on the history of Santa Pola, with three main topics: Prehistoric era, the Iberians, the Roman Port and the history of the Castle. ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE SEA AND FISHING Fishing has always been an important source of wealth merely by itself, but acquires industrial proportions when man gets a better knowledge of the sea and knows how to evaluate its resources and then exploit them. With the sea as a setting, seamen as the main actors and boats as the tools, these are the three substantial elements that shape Maritime History and make it an essential part of the history of mankind. This is reflected in the Maritime Museum, as the materials in the exhibition explain their relevance with the environment. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE MUSIC AND THE SEA This section consists of five rooms dedicated to the history of music in Santa Pola and the archaeological remains the Cap de l’Aljub of Tower, the predecessor of the current castlefortress.

BALUARTE DEL DUQUE DE ARCOS Derribado en 1872 para la construcción de la calle del Muelle, ha sido levantado de nuevo sobre la planta original. En la obra se han incorporado las más modernas técnicas y nuevos materiales, conformando un espacio volumétrico de 12 metros de altura y luz cenital que proporciona una gran majestuosidad al interior.

The Duke of Arcos Bastion It was demolished in 1872 in order to build Muelle Street and then it was rebuilt on top of the original place. The most modern techniques and materials have been incorporated, making a total height of 12 metres and a zenith light which gives it a magnificent atmosphere inside.

PATIO DE ARMAS Ha sido testigo de los más importantes acontecimientos históricos que han ocurrido en Santa Pola a lo largo de los siglos, tales como la expulsión de los moriscos en 1609, o la visita que hizo el Rey D. Alfonso XII a Santa Pola para otorgarle el título de Villa.

Parade Ground It has been a witness to the most important historic events that have taken place in Santa Pola throughout the centuries such as the expulsion of the moriscs in 1609 or the visit of King Alfonso XII in order to grant the category of Village.

CAPILLA VIRGEN DE LORETO La capilla de la Virgen de Loreto, donde se encuentra la Patrona de Santa Pola, está situada en el baluarte del Rey, y constituye un espacio religioso secular desde los orígenes de la Fortaleza, siendo además un punto de interés turístico.

“Virgen de Loreto” Chapel This chapel, where we can find the Patron Saint of Santa Pola, is situated in “The King Bastion” and it is a religious, secular space from the origins of the Fortress and it is also a place of tourist interest.

ACUARIO Situado en Plaza Francisco Fernández Ordóñez. t. 965 416 916 Lunes cerrado / Closed on Mondays. Es el más antiguo de la Comunidad Valenciana y posee 9 grandes acuarios que dan a conocer la flora y fauna del Mediterráneo. La mayoría de las especies que recoge el acuario han sido donadas por los marineros de Santa Pola.

Aquarium

The aquarium is the oldest in the Valencian Community, and it includes 9 large glass tanks containing flora and fauna from the Mediterranean Sea. Most of the species shown have been donated by the fishermen of Santa Pola.

BARCO MUSEO ESTEBÁN GONZÁLEZ Reservas en el Acuario Municipal / Reservations on the Aquarium: t. 965 416 916 El Esteban González es un barco-museo en el que se recrea la auténtica y genuina vida a bordo de los pescadores de arrastre de Santa Pola. Está ubicado en las inmediaciones del Ayuntamiento, en la Plaza Constitución.

Esteban Gonzalez Boat Museum

The Esteban Gonzalez is a boat museum that recreates the authentic and genuine life on board of the fishermen of Santa Pola. It’s situated in Constitution Square, around the Town Hall.

MUSEO DE LA SAL Abierto de 9 a 14 horas, de lunes a domingos. t. 966 693 546 El Museo de la Sal se ubica en las instalaciones de una antigua factoría de sal, dentro del Parque Natural. En él podemos descubrir el proceso de extracción de la sal y su historia, además de información sobre el Parque Natural, desde donde se puede realizar un itinerario para observar flamencos, cerceta pardilla, tarros blancos, garcetas comunes, gaviotas patiamarillas, cigüeñuelas... La extracción de sal es la actividad económica fundamental en la zona y, en gran medida, conforma el ecosistema actual. Las aves se alimentan de los peces e invertebrados que penetran en las salinas mientras que la producción salinera se beneficia de la riqueza mineral aportada por los excrementos de la avifauna.

The Salt Museum Open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday to Sunday. The Salt Museum is located in a former salt factory within the Nature Reserve. As well as learning about the salt extraction process and its history, this museum gives a lot of useful information on the Nature Reserve, from where a route can be followed to observe Flamingos, Marbled Teals, Common Shelducks, Little Egrets, Caspian Gulls, Black-winged Stilts… Salt extraction is the main economic activity in this area and, to a great extent, makes up the current ecosystem. Birds feed on fishes and invertebrates that go into the salt flats while salt production benefits from mineral richness brought by the birds’ excrements.

RESTOS ARQUEOLÓGICOS “CASA ROMANA DEL PALMERAL” Se trata de una lujosa villa romana de carácter señorial construida en el s.IV d.C. Presenta un patio peristilo de grandes dimensiones rodeado por un amplio corredor que da acceso a siete estancias -triclinium (comedor), oecus (salón) y cubicula (habitaciones)- decoradas con mosaicos geométricos policromos y pinturas murales. Esta mansión debió ser la residencia de una familia rica que desarrollaba su actividad en el Portus Illicitanus. Como el resto de personas adineradas de su época, daban una gran importancia a la decoración de las habitaciones con pinturas y mosaicos utilizando materiales como el mármol o el alabastro. Para evitar la oscuridad de las noches, alumbraban la casa con lámparas de aceite (candiles de barro o de bronce). Debido a su sentido religioso, en la vivienda destinaban un lugar sagrado donde rendir culto a los dioses, sobre todo a Venus, diosa protectora de los marineros.

Roman Villa in “El Palmeral” This is a luxurious noble Roman villa constructed in the IV Century AD. It is made up of a large patio with columns surrounded by a wide corridor which gives access to 7 rooms -triclinium (dinning room), oecus (living room) and cubicula (bedrooms)- decorated with polychrome geometrical mosaics and mural paintings. This mansion must have been the residence of a rich family which was involved in the Portus Illicitanus. Like all rich people of the time, they placed great importance on the decorating of rooms, using materials such as marble, alabaster and making paintings and mosaics. In order to avoid the darkness of the nights, they lit up the house with oil lamps (made of clay or bronze). Due to their religiousness, they had a special place in the house where they worshiped the gods, above all Venus, the goddess of the fishermen.

EL PUERTO Heredero directo del antiguo “Portus Illicitanus” de época romana, su actual emplazamiento está determinado básicamente por la habilitación en 1844 de la Aduana Real en Santa Pola y la construcción del actual muelle. En 1609, cuando el puerto quedaba junto al Castillo, se embarcaron los moriscos del arrabal de Elche hacia Orán y Mazalquivir. Según el decreto de expulsión firmado por Felipe III, los moriscos y sus mujeres, bajo pena de muerte, debían dirigirse en el plazo de tres días a los puertos que cada comisario les señalase, sin permitirles sacar de sus casas más que los bienes que pudieran llevar sobre sus cuerpos. En el s.XVIII, gracias a las buenas condiciones de abrigo de la bahía, el puerto recibió varias visitas de la Escuadra Real y siguió desempeñando una importante función comercial. Actualmente es uno de los puertos pesqueros más importantes del Mediterráneo español. Sus principales actividades son la pesca, el embarque de la sal y la construcción de embarcaciones deportivas. No olvide visitar nuestro puerto y su bulliciosa actividad pesquera por las tardes de lunes a viernes.

The Port The heir of the ancient “Portus Illicitanus” from the Roman Epoch, its current location was determined by the building of Royal Customs in 1844 in Santa Pola and the construction of the current dock. In 1609, when the port was next to the castle, the subject Moslems from Elche used to board here to go to Oran and Mazalquivir. According to the decree of expulsion signed by Felipe III, the subject Moslems and their wives, under the threat of the death penalty, had to go to the port that the commissioner had instructed them to go to within three days, whilst not being allowed to take with them anything that could not be carried on their bodies. In the XVIII Century, thanks to the good shelter conditions in the bay, the port received various visits from the Royal Squadron and continued having an important commercial role. Nowadays, it is one of the most important Spanish ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Fishing is the main activity, but also salt commerce and the construction of sport boats. Do not forget to visit our fishing port where you can observe the daily fish activity.

MERCADO DE ABASTOS Situado en la antigua plaza de la Iglesia, fue a mediados del s.XIX un proyecto de templo academicista. Cuentan los cronistas sobre el templo que “cuando estaba en buena parte construido, una noche se vino abajo la bóveda, quedando en ruinas toda la obra”. Una vez superado el siniestro, las obras continuaron, volviéndose a repetir el desastre unos años más tarde. A finales del s.XIX, un terremoto convirtió la iglesia nueva en lo que se conoció en el pueblo por la “iglesia rota” (Bonmatí, 1981). Entre 1935 y 1938 se construyó en su lugar el actual Mercado de Abastos. El recinto alberga diferentes comercios que ofrecen productos frescos de la tierra.

The Market Situated in the old church square, it was a project for an academistic temple approximately in the middle of the 19th Century Feature writers say that “when a good part of the building had been done, the vault collapsed, leaving the entire building in ruins”. After having come to terms with the disaster, the works continued, only with the same misfortune to happen again a few years later. At the end of the 19th Century, an earthquake turned the new church into what was known in the town as the “broken church” (Bonmatí, 1981). Between 1935 and 1938 the current wholesale food market was constructed in its place. The grounds house several different businesses which offer fresh homemade products.

Está ubicado en una privilegiada zona del cabo de Santa Pola.

The Cimar

Prior authorization request for groups, t. 636 805 654 The Research Marine Center is an active center, situated on the headquarters of the “Torre d’en Mig”, built in the 20s, with a privileged location at the foot of Santa Pola’s cape.

PLAZA DEL CALVARIO Enclavada en una de las zonas más altas de la localidad, en este barrio de pescadores destaca la Ermita de la Piedad, de inspiración árabe, construida a principios del s.XX. A partir de 1967, las familias que vivían en el castillo se trasladaron a las viviendas sociales de este barrio.

Calvario Square

A fishermen’s quarter sited in one of the highest areas of Santa Pola. We recommend you to visit the Piedad’s Chapel, built at the beginning of the 20th century designed on Moorish architecture. Families who were living in the Castle moved to this part of the town from 1967 onwards. 7

TORRES VIGÍA TORRE DEL TAMARIT Ctra N-332 km 83, dirección Torrevieja. Coordenadas: 38.18422791,-0.61508417 TORRE ESCALETES Avenida Torre de Pep. Coordenadas: 38.1913532,-0.5305919 Las Torres Vigía fueron construidas en 1552, bajo el reinado de Felipe II. Están situadas estratégicamente para avistar al enemigo antes de que éste llegase a la costa y se comunicaban entre sí por medio de ahumadas de día y luminarias de noche. Son: Torre del Tamarit en las Salinas, Escaletes en la Sierra y Atalayola en el actual faro. Su custodia estaba encomendada a cuatro atajadores: dos de a pie, que realizaban continua vigilancia, y dos a caballo, que controlaban el trayecto comprendido entre dos torres: comunicación, petición de auxilio, etc. Tanto la Torre Escaletes como la Atalayola (actual Faro) tenían guardas de a pie, pero no a caballo, por lo que la función de enlace corría por cuenta de los dos atajadores del castillo. La Torre Escaletes, también conocida como Torre i Pep, es de planta circular y su principal función consistía en la vigilancia de este sector marítimo, prestando especial atención a cualquier embarcación enemiga que hubiera podido esconderse en la cercana isla de Tabarca. En ese caso, debía enviar inmediatamente señales de aviso a la torre Atalayola y al Castillo-Fortaleza de Santa Pola. La Torre del Tamarit, conocida también por Torre de la Albufera o Torre de las Salinas, es de planta cuadrada y está situada entre la Torre del Pinet y el Castillo-Fortaleza de Santa Pola. Al estar un poco alejada de la costa su función principal no era la de vigilar el litoral marítimo, sino el permitir la comunicación con las torres del campo de Elche y vigilar las salinas.

Watch Towers The Watchtowers were built in 1552, during the reign of Felipe II. They were strategically placed in order to spot the enemy before he reached the coast. They communicated with each other using fire at night and smoke signals during the day. The towers are: Tamarit Tower in the salt lakes, Escaletes Tower in the mountains and Atalayola Tower, the present lighthouse. Its safe-keeping was entrusted on 4 guards: two on foot, who continuously kept watch, and two on horseback, who controlled the way between the 2 towers in order to be able to communicate and also ask for help. The Atalayola Tower (the current lighthouse) like the Escaletes Watch Tower had guards on foot but not on horseback, as the guards at the castle were in charge of linking the towers. Escaletes Tower, also known as Torre i Pep, this tower has a round floor and its main function was to keep watch on this part of the sea, paying special attention to any potential enemy boats that could be hiding close to the Island of Tabarca. In such a situation, they had to immediately send a warning signal to the tower Atalayola and the Fortress Castle of Santa Pola. The Tamarit Tower, also known as the Lagoon Tower or the Saline Tower, it has a square floor and is situated between the Pinet Tower and the Fortress Castle of Santa Pola. Due to the fact that it is a bit far away from the coast, its main function was never to keep watch of the coast, but to facilitate communication with Elche´s countryside towers.

EL FARO Coordenadas: 38.209087-0.515194 Se halla emplazado en el extremo este del cabo de Santa Pola, sobre una antigua torre vigía del s.XVI, denominada Atalayola. Fue instalado en 1.858 para la orientación de los barcos que por la noche navegan por estas costas, sobre todo para los buques de la Armada, que en el año de su construcción fondeaban en la bahía de Santa Pola. Actualmente posee un foco luminoso situado a 152 m. sobre el nivel del mar y a 15 sobre el terreno; su apariencia es FGpD (2+1) B con un período de 20”; su alcance máximo es de 16 millas y es un referente visual de gran ayuda para la navegación.

The Lighthouse Coordenates: 38.209087-0.515194 Located at the far eastern end of the cape of Santa Pola, upon an old watch tower (16th century) called “Atalayola". It was built in 1858 to guide ships that sailed near the coast during the night, and especially ships of the Navy which used to anchor in the Bay of Santa Pola at that time. It currently has a spotlight situated 152 m. above sea level and 15 metres above ground level; its light signal is FGpD (2+1) B with a period of 20”; its maximum reach is 16 miles and it is a very useful reference point for orientation.

NATURALEZA Nature PARQUE NATURAL DE LAS SALINAS

73% Protected Territory Santa Pola Saltworks Natural Park

Las Salinas de Santa Pola fueron declaradas Paraje Natural el 12 de diciembre de 1988 y posteriormente pasaron a la figura de Parque Natural el 27 de diciembre de 1994 en razón a su biodiversidad, a sus abundantes endemismos y a la compatibilidad de los usos económicos con la conservación ecológica (industria salinera). Además, el Parque Natural está reconocido a nivel internacional como humedal de gran importancia por la Convención Internacional de RAMSAR.

Santa Pola Saltworks were declared a Protected Area on 12th December 1988 and later designated a Natural Park on the 27th December 1994 due to its biodiversity, its abundant endemism and its economic uses; all these compatible with ecological conservation (namely, the salt industry). Furthermore, the Natural Park is internationally recognized by the RAMSAR International Convention as being a wetland of great importance.

Con una superficie de 2.469,7 ha. y situado entre los términos municipales de Santa Pola y Elche, el Parque Natural está compuesto por dos grandes salineras (Braç del Port y Bonmatí), terrenos palustres de diferente gradación salina, saladares, zonas arenosas costeras, cotos cinegéticos y terrenos de cultivo con especies tolerantes a la salinidad.

With an area of 2,469.7 hectares, located between the municipalities of Santa Pola and Elche, the Natural Park is home to two large salt-producing companies (Braç del Port and Bonmatí), marsh lands of different saline levels, salt marsh, coastal sandy areas, hunting grounds and agricultural land using species tolerant to salinity.

La explotación salinera desde finales del s.XIX, ha permitido la pervivencia de Las Salinas, humedal protegido como Parque Natural y declarado “Zona de Especial Importancia para las aves”, donde la presencia del flamenco y cigüeñuela es constante. La dinámica de Las Salinas consiste en hacer circular el agua marina por un circuito de balsas para obtener la concentración de sales como consecuencia de la evaporación. Las aves se alimentan de los peces e invertebrados que penetran en las salinas, mientras que la producción salinera se beneficia de la riqueza mineral aportada por la avifauna.

From the end of the 19th Century, the salt-works have made it possible to preserve the Salt Lakes, wetlands protected as a Nature Reserve and declared ”Special Protection Areas for Birds” (SPAB) where the flamingo and Stilts are regular residents. Its dynamics consist of circulating sea water ponds for salt concentration by evaporation. The birds feed on the fish and invertebrates whilst the salt production benefits from the mineral wealth provided by the birds.

Entre la biodiversidad reinante cabe mencionar como formaciones vegetales más importantes, el carrizal/juncal (vegetación palustre), los saladares (destacando las sosas) y la vegetación de las dunas litorales. Un punto especial merece la avifauna, que es el grupo mejor representado, destacando las colonias de avocetas, cigüeñuelas, charrancitos y flamencos existentes en el Parque Natural. NORMAS DE CONSERVACIÓN DEL PARQUE NATURAL

Nos encontramos en un espacio natural protegido. Para contribuir a su conservación debemos intentar visitarlo en grupos reducidos, hacer el menor ruido posible, no salir de los senderos delimitados, respetar a los animales y plantas, no encender fuego (salvo en los lugares permitidos y con la debida autorización), respetar las normativas forestales, y no dejar basuras, residuos ni huellas de nuestro paso por el Parque Natural.

Among this wide biodiversity, it is worth to mention as the most important plant formations: reed grass (wetlands vegetation), the salt marshes (where soda types figure highly) and the coastal dunes vegetation. A special mention is deserved by the birdlife, which is the best represented group, figuring highly here: the colonies of pied avocets, black -winged stilts, little terns and greater flamingoes, all living in the Natural Park. REGULATIONS OF THE NATURAL PARK This is a protected conservation natural area. Therefore, in order to contribute to its preservation, we must try to visit it in small groups, making the lowest noise possible, not straying from the marked paths, respecting the animals and plants, not lighting fires (except in permitted places and with the proper authorization). It is of the highest importance to follow regulations, not to leave garbage, waste or any evidence of our visit throughout the Natural Park.

AVISTAMIENTO DE AVES Santa Pola es un paraíso para los amantes del birdwatching, sobre todo en el Parque Natural de las Salinas. Este humedal de Importancia Internacional y zona ZEPA, forma parte del triángulo palustre El Hondo y Torrevieja–La Mata configurando uno de los mejores lugares de la península para la observación de aves. Su diversidad, número y belleza hacen de las Salinas de Santa Pola un lugar privilegiado para los amantes de las aves. Las especias residentes y multitudinarias, como el flamenco o la avoceta, y las amenazadas en peligro de extinción como la Malvasía Cabeciblanca o la Cerceta Pardilla, convierten a las Salinas de Santa Pola en una joya ineludible para los amantes de la observación de aves.

LA SIERRA Y EL CABO

The Sierra and the Cape

La sierra es una formación acantilada que se eleva a 144 m. sobre el nivel del mar. En sus estribaciones se encuentra el cabo, que marca el punto final de la bahía de Alicante. En su punto más alto se encuentra la Torre Vigía Atalayola, el actual faro.

The mountain is a cliff formation rising 144 m. above sea level. At its foothills is the cape which marks the end of the Alicante’s bay. At its highest point is the “Torre Vigía Atalayola”, the current lighthouse.

El cabo de Santa Pola es un ejemplar único en Europa de arrecife coralino fósil de la era messiniense, formado principalmente por restos de corales del género porites, estromatolitos y algas halimedas.

Santa Pola’s cape is a unique specimen in Europe of Messinian coral reef, mainly made up of coral remains of the genus porites, stromatolites and halimeda seaweed.

Este espacio es de gran relevancia ambiental, ya que es uno de los pocos ejemplos de arrecife fósil del litoral mediterráneo, y alberga una interesante vegetación y fauna.

This area has a very important environmental significance because it is one of the few examples of fossil reefs on the mediterranean coast, and contains a very interesting vegetation and fauna.

Birdwatching Santa Pola is a paradise for bird watchers, particularly the Santa Pola salt flats. These internationally renowned wetlands and ZEPA zone are part of the El Hondo and Torrevieja– La Mata triangular marsh, one of the Iberian Peninsula’s top birdwatching spots. The diversity, number of birds and the beauty of the Santa Pola Salt Flats make this area a magnet for bird lovers. Its many residents and visitors include flamingos and avocets, and birds in danger of extinction such as the white-headed duck or the marbled duck, make the Salinas de Santa Pola a twitchers’ paradise. 11

Santa Pola has set out several viewpoint from which you can take pictures of great beauty, watch incredible sunsets, see beautiful sunrises or just admire the landscape and environment.

MIRADOR DEL FARO En las inmediaciones del faro de Santa Pola, antigua torre vigía denominada Atalayola. Con una forma serpenteante, esta desafiante obra de ingeniería reta a quienes sufren de vértigo a situarse en su extremo final orientado hacia Tabarca, y disfrutar de sus vistas panorámicas de la costa de Alicante y del Cabo las Huertas hasta Isla Grossa, frente al Mar Menor.

Viewpoint from the Lighthouse In vicinity of the Santa Pola lighthouse, is an old watchtower previously called Atalayola. With its snaking shape, tis amazing work of engineering with a beautiful winding footbridge, challenges those who might suffer from vertigo to stand at the far end of the skywalk facing Tabarca and so

enjoy panoramic views of the Alicante coast; also as far as “Cabo las Huertas” to “Isla Grossa”, facing the “Mar Menor”.

MIRADORES DE GRAN ALACANT Los miradores de Gran Alacant están situados en la Av. del Mediterráneo (coordenadas 38.236636, -0.520701) y en Av. Escandinavia (coordenadas 38.225145, -0.520583). Desde el mirador de la Av. Mediterráneo se observa la belleza natural de las Dunas de los Arenales del Sol y la Bahía de Alicante, pudiéndose observar en los días más claros y nítidos Sierra Helada y el Peñón de Ifach, punto situado a 37 millas náuticas (68 km.) en línea recta. Al final de la Av. Escandinavia, junto a la urbanización “El Olivo de Oro” destaca la zona de acceso a la pista de despegue de parapente, donde se puede observar cómo vuelan los parapentes en los días que sopla una ligera brisa de levante. Viewpoint from Gran Alacant Areas located on Av. del Mediterráneo and on Av. de Escandinavia. From the lookout point on Av. del Mediterráneo you can admire the “Arenales del Sol” dunes natural beauty and the Bay of Alicante; and on good, clear days you can see as far as “Sierra Helada” (Benidorm) and the “Peñón de Ifach” (Calpe) situated 37 nautical miles (68 km.) in a straight line. At the end of Av. Escandinavia by the “El Olivo de Oro” housing development, is an area that gives access to the paragliding runway, where you can

Se encuentra entre el mar y la N-332, con un itinerario que recorre las montañas de sal hasta llegar al canal de desagüe de las salinas de “Braç del Port”.

Tamarit Beach Route Type: On foot, not suitable for cycling. Total Distance: 3 Km. It is a totally flat area with two different valuable environments which are the salt marsh and beach. It lies between the sea and the N-332, with a route that runs from the mountains of salt to the salt lake drainage channel at Braç del Port.

Other Routes Various routes suitable for hiking and mountain bikes have been prepared, which run along the mountains of Santa Pola. PLAYAS DE PONIENTE

PLAYAS Las playas de Santa Pola se caracterizan por su diversidad. 11 km. de playas para todos los gustos y edades, con más comodidades, más variedad, más calidad de arena... El agua tiene una temperatura media de 24ºC en el mes de julio y de 18ºC en noviembre. Todas nuestras playas están orientadas al sur.

Beaches Diversity is the trademark of Santa Pola’s beaches. There are 11 km. of beaches to suit people of all tastes and ages, with more amenities, more variety, better sand quality... The water has an average temperature of 24ºC in July and 18ºC in November. All our beaches are orientated to the south.

West beaches PLAYA EL PINET Longitud: 3.324 m. · Servicios: Equipamientos básicos por tratarse de una playa calificada no urbana para la protección y preservación de sus características medioambientales. Se sitúa junto al Parque Natural de las Salinas, en el extremo sudoeste del término municipal de Santa Pola. Es una playa virgen a la que sólo se puede acceder a pie. Junto a la playa del Pinet se encuentran las Salinas de Bonmatí, construidas a principios del s.XX, y la base de la Torre Vigía el Pinet, que cruzaba señales con el Castillo de Guardamar, con la Torre Vigía del Tamarit o con el Castillo-Fortaleza de Santa Pola.

The Pinet Beach Length: 3.324 m. · Services: Basic equipment of a non-urban beach for the need to protect environmental features. Located next to the Salinas Nature Reserve, on the southwest side of the Santa Pola municipal area. It is an unspoilt beach which you can only get to on foot. Close to El Pinet beach can be found the Bonmatí salt flats, dating back to the beginning of the 20th.

PLAYA LA GOLA Longitud: 1.655 m. · Servicios: Equipamientos básicos por tratarse de una playa calificada no urbana para la protección y preservación de sus características medioambientales. Existe una zona delimitada para la práctica del Kitesurf. Como dato histórico curioso señalar que en esta playa se realizaba la mayor parte del contrabando en época posterior a la Guerra Civil. Únicamente es accesible a pie desde la playa del Pinet o Tamarit. En la playa de la Gola encontramos el embarcadero de las Salinas “Braç del Port”, cuya construcción fue solicitada por Don Alfonso Llorens Ceriola en 1896 al Ministerio de Fomento para exportar la sal que producían.

“La Gola” Beach Length: 1.655 m. · Services: Basic equipment of a non-urban beach for the need to protect environmental features. There is a designated area for practising Kitesurfing. As an interesting historical note, it was from this beach that the majority of the smuggling was carried out after the Civil War. It is only accessible on foot from the beaches of Pinet or Tamarit. At La Gola beach is situated the quay of the Bonmatí salt flats “Braç del Port”, which building was requested by Don Alfonso Llorens Ceriola in 1896 to the Ministry of Public Works for the export of the salt produced.

PLAYA TAMARIT Longitud: 665 m. · Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas. En su límite oeste se encuentra el antiguo muelle salinero construido en 1897. Las vagonetas cargadas con sal eran desplazadas por las vías tiradas por animales, una vez en el muelle, las vagonetas eran descargadas en los botes (gabarras) que transportaban la sal a los barcos anclados en la bahía. En esta playa tiene su sede la empresa Parres Water Sports, para la práctica de kitesurf y otros deportes náuticos. www.parreswatersports.com

Tamarit Beach Length: 665 m. · Services: Provided with all the same services found in an urban beach. On its western limit we find the old salt quay built in 1897. The wagons pulled by animals and loaded with salt were moved along the rails, once in the harbour, the wagons were unloaded into barges (gabarras) which carried the salt to the ships anchored in the bay. PLAYA LISA Longitud: 553 m. · Servicios: Dispone de todos

los servicios de las playas urbanas. Aquí se ubica una escuela de windsurf y zona náutica de patines. Por sus aguas poco profundas, confiere a niños y mayores la máxima seguridad para la práctica del baño. Asimismo, por su buena orientación a los vientos predominantes, es una playa idónea para la práctica de deportes a vela como el Windsurf, por ello tiene aquí su sede el Club Windsurf Área con más de 25 años de antigüedad.

Playa Lisa Beach Length: 553 m. · Services: Provided with all the same services found in an urban beach. A windsurf school and a nautical area for pedal boats are located here. In these shallow waters, children and adults alike enjoy the best safe bathing. Also, as it ideally faces the prevailing winds, the beach is ideal for watersports such as windsurfing, so Club Windsurfing Area is based here, with more than 25 years old.

GRAN PLAYA (PLAYA ACCESIBLE) Longitud: 1.084 m. · Servicios: Cuenta con una zona náutica de windsurf, patines, un chiringuito y restaurantes. Dispone de una zona de atención a personas discapacitadas. En los inicios del s.XIX, toma cierta entidad el fenómeno del veraneo en las playas de Santa Pola. En Gran Playa y Playa Lisa se ubicaban numerosas barracas de esparto y junco, que fueron la

habitación más popular para los veraneantes, en su mayoría ilicitanos. El “Baño de las Sirenas”, situado en el actual puerto, era Centro Social de reuniones para los veraneantes más pudientes. En esta playa tiene su sede el Club Windsurf Santa Pola y en 2009 se celebró el “Campeonato del Mundo de Fórmula Windsurf”.

Gran Playa Beach (Accessible Beach) Length: 1.084 m. · Services: It has a nautical area for practising windsurfing and pedal boats. There are refreshment stalls and restaurants. First aid and care services are placed in Accessible Points for people of limited mobility. At the beginning of the 19th century, Santa Pola became a summer resort for the first time. A great number of sheds made of esparto grass and rushes were located in Gran Playa and Playa Lisa. These sheds were most popular for people who spent their holidays here, most of whom came from Elche. The so-called “Baño de las Sirenas”, which was situated in the present harbour, was like a Social Centre for meetings of the richest holidaymakers. Santa Pola’s Windsurfing Club is based here and in 2009 was held the “World Championship Formula Windsurf”.

PLAYAS DE LEVANTE

East Beaches PLAYA LEVANTE (PLAYA ACCESIBLE) Longitud: 425 m. · Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas y zona náutica de patines. Dispone de una zona de atención a personas discapacitadas. Fue galardonada en la distinción temática de “Ruptura de Barreras Arquitectónicas y Atención a Personas con Discapacidades” por la Fundación para la Educación Ambiental en Europa (FEEE). A finales del s.XIX esta playa se convirtió en un improvisado astillero para la construcción de barcos de pesca. En aquella época, Santa Pola tenía 4100 habitantes, y esta playa era la preferida de la población. Junto con el comercio y la pesca, el turismo empezaba a dejar su huella: los veraneantes de Elche, los baños La Sirena, las barracas junto a la playa, el Teatro y el Casino nos cuentan los inicios de un incipiente desarrollo turístico.

At the end of the nineteenth century, this beach became a make-shift shipyard for building fishing boats. At that time 4,100 inhabitants lived in Santa Pola and this beach was their favourite. Tourism, as well as trade and fishing, was flourishing: Elche holidaymakers, La Sirena baths, the refreshment stands near the beach, the Theatre and the Casino tell us about an incipient tourist development.

CALAS SANTIAGO BERNABEU Longitud: 920 m. · Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas. Deben su nombre a D. Santiago Bernabeu (presidente del Real Madrid durante más de tres décadas) quien veraneaba en una casa situada en la avenida del mismo nombre. Estas calas de fondo rocoso, fueron regeneradas en 1990 con arena de fondos marinos cercanos. En la Cala I tiene su sede la empresa de deportes naúticos Be Water Sports, especializados en Sup y vela ligera. www.bewatersports.es

Santiago Bernabeu Coves Length: 920 m. · Services: It is provided with all the same services we can find in an urban beach.

These coves are named after Mr. Santiago Bernabeu (Chairman of Real Madrid for more than three decades), who spent his summer holidays in a house located in the avenue which now holds his name. These rocky coves were regenerated in 1990 with sand which was brought from the sea bed close by.

PLAYA VARADERO Longitud: 475 m. · Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas y zona náutica de patines. Galardonada desde 1987 con la Bandera Azul. Su denominación proviene del varadero que está junto a la misma. Anteriormente se denominaba Playa de los Ingenieros debido a que los ingenieros del varadero vivieron en sus inmediaciones. Además, era el punto de concentración para la tradicional celebración de la tarde de la mona de Pascua. Cada año, a principios del mes de julio, se celebra la Travesía a nado Tabarca-Santa Pola, prueba deportiva de carácter internacional en la que los nadadores deben realizar un trayecto a nado de 5900 m., con salida en la isla de Tabarca y llegada en esta playa.

Varadero Beach Length: 475 m. · Services: It is provided with all the same services found in an urban beach and an area designated for pedal boats. It boasts a Blue Flag since 1987. Its name comes from the “Varadero” (dry dock) which is next to it. Previously it was called “Playa de los Ingenieros” because of the engineers who worked in the dry dock and lived in the surrounding area. Moreover, it was the meeting point for the traditional celebration of what is known as “Easter Cake Afternoon”. Every year, in early July, the Tabarca-Santa Pola open-water Swim is held; an international sporting event, in which swimmers have to cover a distance of 5900 m. (in a straight line). Departure is from the beach on Tabarca Island, thence to the Finish on this beach.

CALAS

Coves

CALAS DEL ESTE Longitud: 1.287 m. · Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas. Galardonada con la Bandera Azul. Santa Pola del Este es una urbanización situada entre la playa y las estribaciones de la Sierra que empezó a urbanizarse en 1963 consiguiendo poco después la declaración de Centro de “Interés Turístico Nacional”. La escuela náutica y albergue juvenil Natural School tiene su sede en la cala conocida como Carlotti. www.naturalschool.es

Del Este Coves Length: 1,287 m. · Services: It is provided with all the same services we can find in an urban beach. It boasts a Blue Flag. Santa Pola del Este is a housing development situated between the beach and the mountains. Its development began in 1963 which later received the certification of “Centre of National Tourist Interest”. CALAS DE L’ALJUB Longitud: 830 m. · Servicios: Playa no urbana con equipamientos básicos. Chiringuitos en Bancal de La Arena y Cala de la Ermita. Están situadas en una zona de protección especial, de alto valor paisajístico y medioambiental. El Cabo de Santa Pola, con sus 144 m. de altura, es un ejemplar único en Europa, de arrecife coralino de la era messiniense. El nombre de estas calas data de la Edad Media cuando esta zona se denominaba El Port del Cap l´Aljub.

De L’Aljub Coves Length: 830 m. · Services: Non urban beaches with basic equipment. Kiosks in “Bancal de La Arena” and the Ermita Beach. These are located in a special protected area, with a beautiful landscape and priceless environment. Santa Pola’s Cap, 144 m high, is a unique example in Europe of a Messinian coral reef. The name of these coves dates from the Middle Ages when this area was called “El Port del Cap l’Aljub”.

BANCAL DE LA ARENA Longitud: 610 m. · Servicios: Playa Natural con equipamientos básicos. Chiringuito y un canal de entrada y salida de embarcaciones. Esta playa está situada en el Cabo de Santa Pola, zona de protección especial y de gran valor paisajístico y medioambiental.

Bancal de La Arena Length: 610 m. · Services: Natural beach with basic equipment. A beach bar and an entry and exit channel for boats. This beach is located in the Cape of Santa Pola, which is a special protection area with a great landscape and environmental value.

CALAS DEL CUARTEL Longitud: 1591 m. · Servicios: Playa Natural con equipamientos básicos. Se trata de dos calas situadas junto al Bancal de la Arena en cuyas inmediaciones se ubica el tercer centro de investigación marina de España denominado CIMAR. Las aguas de estas calas se encuentran en lo que se denomina una zona L.I.C, Lugar de Interés Comunitario y son el lugar ideal para la práctica del snorkel.

The Cuartel Coves Length: 610 m. · Services: Natural beach with basic equipment. They are located next to “Bancal de la Arena”, which is a small beach with a beach bar and an entry and exit channel for boats. In the vicinity of these coves, the third important marine research centre in Spain “CIMAR” is located. The waters of these coves are in what is called a LIC area, Site of Regional Importance. These coves are ideal for snorkelling.

Tabarca Island

Santa Pola es el punto más cercano de la Península a Tabarca, única isla habitada de la Comunidad Valenciana, situada a tan sólo 3 millas del cabo. Desde el puerto de Santa Pola, parten embarcaciones durante todo el año hacia la isla, declarada en 1964 Conjunto Histórico Nacional.

Santa Pola is the closest point from the Peninsula to Tabarca, the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, just 3 miles away from the Cape. Boats leave throughout the year from the port of Santa Pola to the island, which was declared a National Historic Area in 1964.

Tabarca es un lugar único que atrapa con su historia, haciéndonos recordar que inspiró a artistas y atrajo a piratas. De hecho, para acabar con la piratería, la isla fue fortificada y poblada por habitantes de la isla de Tabarqah (Tabarka) situada en Túnez. De esta época (s.XVIII) quedan las murallas, las puertas de San Gabriel, San Miguel y San Rafael, la torre defensiva de San José, la Casa del Gobernador (restaurada como hotel) y la Iglesia. En el extremo oriental de la isla se encuentra el faro, del s.XIX. Es además un auténtico paraíso marino (reconociéndose en 1986 como la primera reserva marina del país) de aguas cristalinas y espectacular fauna y flora que hará las delicias de los amantes de la práctica del buceo. La línea de la costa es recortada, formada por pequeños acantilados de escasos metros de altura, con playas de cantos rodados y una única playa de arena con aguas transparentes. Debajo de la iglesia hay fondo de algas y la zona está protegida de los vientos de S. y SE. A espaldas del puerto, fondo de algas y rocas, protegido de los vientos del 2º y 3º cuadrante (SE, S, SW).

Tabarca is a unique place with its own history, reminding us once, it was a place of inspiration for artists aswell as a sanctuary for pirates. In fact, to stop piracy the island was fortified and populated with people from the isle of Tabarqah (Tabarka), in Tunisia. From this period, (18th century) the walls, the gates of San Gabriel, San Miguel and San Rafael, the defensive tower of San Jose, the Governor’s House (turned into a hotel) and the Church, all still survive. At the far east of the island you will discover the 18th Century Lighthouse. It is a marine paradise (regonised in 1986 as the first marine reserve in the country) with crystal-clear waters, its magnificent flora and fauna turn this island into a dream place for scuba diving. The line coast is irregular, made up of low cliffs of only a few metres in height, with pebble beaches and with a unique sandy beach with clear water. It has a total of 560 moorings for boats up to a length of 15 metres and its facilities have recently been updated, so this is a marvellous leisure and sailing complex. Its proximity to the town centre offers visitors ample shopping and leisure opportunities. FIESTAS Las fiestas de un pueblo reflejan el espíritu de sus gentes, la tradición popular y la historia de la zona. La historia de Santa Pola está profundamente ligada al mar, por lo que sus fiestas giran entorno a él. Estas son algunas fiestas de interés:

MARZO. El “MIG ANY” de Moros y Cristianos tiene lugar el primer o segundo fin de semana del mes de marzo, como preámbulo de las Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos que se celebran medio año después, en septiembre. MARZO / ABRIL. Durante la Semana Santa,

las calles de la ciudad son testigo de las diversas procesiones a cargo de las diferentes cofradías. En estas mismas fechas, en el patio de armas del Castillo-Fortaleza se instala un Mercadillo Medieval.

JUNIO. El domingo más próximo al 24 de junio, tiene lugar la «Romeria del Cap» en honor a la Virgen del Rosario. JULIO.

El día 16 se celebra la festividad en honor a la Virgen del Carmen, mediante misas, ofrenda a los marineros fallecidos, procesión y fuegos artificiales.

SEPTIEMBRE. Del 31 de agosto al 8 de septiembre se celebran las fiestas de Moros y Cristianos y Fiestas Patronales en honor a la Virgen de Loreto, con desembarco, embajadas, conquista y reconquista de moros y cristianos, desfiles, fuegos artificiales, ofrenda floral a la patrona, procesión, juegos infantiles y competiciones deportivas. DICIEMBRE.

El día 10 se conmemora la

Venida de la Virgen de Loreto a Santa Pola, con una pequeña procesión desde el puerto hasta su capilla. Según la leyenda, en 1643, un pesquero con destino a otro puerto se vio obligado a recalar en Santa Pola por causa de un fuerte temporal; en el barco viajaba como pasajera una imagen de la Virgen de Loreto. Cuando amainó el temporal, el barco se hizo a la mar y tuvo que regresar a puerto dos veces más antes de poder partir, por lo que los tripulantes y autoridades entendieron que la Virgen de Loreto deseaba quedarse en Santa Pola.

FIESTAS DE NAVIDAD. Del 21 de diciembre

al 5 de enero se organizan actividades para niños y jóvenes en la plaza de la Glorieta. El 31 de diciembre se recibe el año al ritmo de las campanadas desde el Castillo. Estas fiestas finalizan el 5 de enero con la tradicional Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos.

MARCH. The “MIG ANY” (Half Year) celebration of the Moors and Christians takes place the first or second weekend in March, as a preamble to the Moors and Christians Festival in September. MARCH / APRIL.

At Easter (“Semana Santa”), streets witness processions performed by different brotherhoods. On these days a Medieval Market is opened inside the parade ground of the Fortress-Castle.

JUNE. In June, as a prelude to summer, we celebrate the “Romería del Cap”, a pilgrimage to honour the “Virgen del Rosario”. JULY.

The 16th July, Santa Pola, and especially sailors, venerate the “Virgen del Carmen” – fishermen’s patron saint– with masses, flower offering for fishermen lost at sea, processions and fireworks.

SEPTEMBER.

From 31st August to 8th September, we celebrate Moors and Christians and Festival in honour of the “Virgen de Loreto”, the patron saint of Santa Pola, with the landings, Conquests and Reconquering by the Moors and Christians, and enjoy parades, fireworks, floral offerings, processions, children’s games and sport competition.

DECEMBER.

The 10th December, according to a legend which goes back to 1643, Santa Pola commemorates the emotive “Vinguda de la Mare de Deu de Loreto” (the arrival of Our Lady of Loreto). According to a legend which goes back to 1643, a fishing boat travelling to another harbour, had to reach port in Santa Pola because of a big storm; on board, there was an image of the Virgin of Loreto. When the storm died down, the boat sailed away and had to go back to the harbour twice before being able to leave, so the crew and the authorities understood that the Virgin of Loreto wished to stay in Santa Pola.

CHRISTMAS SEASON. From the 21st of December to the 5th of January, several activities are organized for children and young people at the Glorieta square. On the 31st of December, the new year is welcomed to the rhythm of bells from the Castle. These celebrations will end on the 5th of January with the traditional Parade of the Three Kings.

GASTRONOMÍA Guisar: “Preparar los alimentos sometiéndolos a la acción del fuego”. Esta definición se podría aplicar perfectamente a cualquier guiso, pero no sería fiel reflejo de la cultura gastronómica santapolera, ya que en esta tierra de marineros, guisar es algo más que preparar unos alimentos; es poner a disposición de los comensales unas materias primas de una gran calidad, rehogadas con aceite de oliva, condimentadas con azafrán de hebra, ñoras, clavos, hierbas aromáticas de la sierra, sal de sus salinas y mucho cariño, para redondear unos platos que, por su sencillez, resultan exquisitos. Los guisos de esta tierra destacan por su colorido, y la base de los mismos son el PEIX DE SANTA POLA y el arroz. Desde el aperitivo (salazones, gamba roja, marisco variado) pasando por el arroz (a banda, negro, con tropezones, arrós i gatet), los guisos (bollitori de rape, gazpacho de mero, caldereta de langosta), el caldero y los postres (hojaldres, helados, mantecados), nada dejará indiferente a quien coma en Santa Pola. Cada atardecer, en la pescadería del Peix de Santa Pola y en los puestos de la lonja de pescadores, se puede adquirir el mejor pescado y marisco fresco recién desembarcado, para prepararlo en casa a nuestro gusto.

El Ayuntamiento ha otorgado el galardón ESTRELLA DE MAR a los restaurantes que se esfuerzan en incrementar la calidad de sus servicios e instalaciones, y a mejorar su conocimiento de idiomas. Gastronomy Cooking: “prepare food by heating”. This definition could be perfectly applied by any cook, but it wouldn’t be true for Santa Pola gastronomic culture, because in this land of sailors, cooking is something more than preparing food; it means offering guests, food of high quality, fried with olive oil, seasoned with saffron thread, sweet red pepper, clove, aromatic herbs from the mountains, salt from its “salinas” and made with lots of care, in order to achieve some dishes which, for their simplicity, are delicious. The local cuisine is remarkable for its colour, and they are based on fish “PEIX DE SANTA POLA” and rice. Not only snacks (salt-dried fish, red prawns, varied shellfish) but also the rice (“arroz a banda”, “arroz negro”, “arròs i gatet”), the stews (“bollitori”, “gazpacho de mero”, “caldereta de langosta”), the typical “caldero” and the desserts (puff pastry, ice-creams) will surprise all who eat in Santa Pola. Every evening, at the Fishmongers of “Peix de Santa Pola” and stalls in the fish market, you can buy the best fresh fish and seafood, just caught, to prepare at home.

ARROZ NEGRO CON RAPE, CALAMAR Y GAMBAS

Black Rice wit Squid and Prawns

Ingredientes para 4 personas 400 g. de arroz / 2 l. de caldo de pescado / 200 g. de calamar fresco en rodajas y con su tinta / 100 g. de rape fresco y troceado / 200 g. de gamba roja fresca / 1 pimiento rojo / 2 ajos picados / 1 ñora frita picada / 100 g. de tomate triturado / aceite de oliva / colorante y sal ELABORACIÓN: En una paellera ponemos el aceite a calentar, freímos el pimiento y retiramos. Con la ñora hacemos lo mismo y una vez que enfríe la picamos. A continuación, se echa el calamar troceado, el rape y la gamba y sofreímos todo. Añadimos el tomate y rehogamos, se añade el ajo picado y la ñora picada y se dan unas vueltas. Añadimos el arroz y seguimos sofriendo. A continuación, añadimos el caldo de pescado previamente elaborado y caliente. Repartimos el arroz uniformemente con una rasera cuando empiece a hervir. Dejamos hervir a fuego fuerte durante 10 minutos y 10 minutos más a fuego lento, añadiendo el pimiento al final. Dejamos reducir el caldo hasta que esté completamente hecho. Ingredients for 4 people 1 squid weighing / 1/2 kg. with its ink / 1 ‘ñora’ (a type of dried red pepper, named after a town in Murcia) / 1 bulb of garlic / ½ red pepper / Tomato puree / 400 g rice Fish stock Saffron / salt and olive oil. PREPARATION: Pour oil into a frying pan, and fry the ‘ñora’ pepper, removing it when it has browned. Next lightly fry the sliced red pepper. Remove the pepper, and lastly fry the squid, the prawns and the monkfish. Crush the ‘ñora’, pealed garlic and tomato puree with a pestle and mortar. Lightly fry the paste, add and spread out the rice, and add all the fish in. Once everything has been lightly fried, during 10 minutes, add the pepper and leave the stew cooking during 10 more minutes. 38

El PEIX DE SANTA POLA es pescado fresco que los pescadores de nuestra localidad desembarcan a diario en la Lonja pesquera, ubicada en el puerto. Este pescado es muy sabroso y posee unas cualidades únicas para poder elaborarlo de mil maneras diferentes: escabeches, en aceite, con tomate, con pasta y arroces, a la plancha o simplemente marinado, su carne jugosa y delicada satisfará cualquier paladar que disfrute del buen pescado. Es rico en ácidos grasos omega-3 que contribuyen a disminuir los niveles de colesterol y de triglicéridos en sangre, además de hacer la sangre más fluida, lo que rebaja el riesgo de formación de coágulos o trombos. Colabora así en la reducción del riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares, y es por ello que se recomienda su consumo y el de otros pescados. Además, el bonito, como el resto de los pescados, es buena fuente de proteínas de alto valor biológico y posee cantidades diversas de vitaminas y minerales. ESPECIES CARACTERÍSTICAS Las especies más representativas desembarcadas en el puerto de Santa Pola son: salmonete, pescadilla, bacaladilla, brótola, gamba roja, gamba blanca, quisquilla, cigala, pulpo, calamar, jibia-sepia, potas, cangrejo, galera, sardina, anchoa, congrio, bonito del sur, besugo, pez espada, caballa, jurel, lecha, palometa, dorada y rape, entre otras muchas. ¿QUÉ ES EL “TAPEIX”? El Tapeix es un concurso de tapas que organiza el Ayuntamiento de Santa Pola en colaboración con la Asociación Empresarial de Hostelería y Ocio para promocionar el Peix de Santa Pola, distintivo de calidad que identifica el pescado que desembarcan nuestros marineros en el puerto cada día. Este concurso se suele celebrar en Febrero, y tiene una duración de 2 semanas aproximadamente. 40

PEIX FROM SANTA POLA is fish that the fishermen from

our village fish everyday and unload at the fish market placed in the port. This fish is very tasty and has unique qualities for preparation in a thousand ways: pickling brined, in oil, with tomato, with pasta and rice or simply marinated, its juicy, delicate meat will satisfy any palate that enjoys good fish. It is rich in fat omega-3 acids that contribute to lower the levels of cholesterol and to in blood and also, to make blood thinner, which contributes to reduce the risk of clots. It collaborates to reduce the risk of heart disease so its consumption is recommended along with other blue fish. Besides, tuna, like all other fish, is a good source of a high-biological value and has different kinds of vitamins and minerals. TYPICAL SPECIES The most representative species that arrive at the port of Santa Pola are: red-mullet, young hake, small cod fish, red king prawns, white prawns, prawns, crayfish, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, potas, crab, mantis-shrimp, sardine, anchovy, conger(eel), bonito from the south, sea bream, sword fish, mackerel, horse mackerel, soft roe, gilthead bream and monkfish amongst many others. WHAT IS “TAPEIX”? The “Tapeix“ consists of a tapas contest organised by the Local Government in collaboration with the Hospitality, Industry and Leisure Time Association from Santa Pola. Its aim is to promote the “Peix de Santa Pola” (Fish from Santa Pola), which is a sign of quality that identifies the fish unloaded on port every day by our fishermen. The contest stars in February, with a duration of 2 weeks.
