EVARISTO DE CHURRUCAREN MONUMENTUA MONUMENTO A EVARISTO DE CHURRUCA MONUMENT TO EVARISTO DE CHURRUCA [EUSKARA] Monumentu hau 1939ko urriaren 25ean inauguratu zuten ofizialki. Art decó estiloa duen faro-dorrea du, Ignacio Mª Smith arkitektoak diseinatutakoa, eta brontzezko eskultura-multzoa, Miguel García de Salazar artistak egindakoa. Eskulturak elementu hauek ditu: Evaristo de Churruca eserita, brontzezko estatua batean; beste bi, alboan: batak, industria adierazten du; besteak, nabigazioa, eta aurrean, beste bi irudi daude: Bilbo eta Neptuno, bata bestearen kontra borrokatzen. Haien artean, harrilubetazko bloke handia dago. Bizkaiko eta Gipuzkoako armarriak landuta daude harri berean, eta Bilbokoa brontzez, eta beheerliebean. [CASTELLANO] Monumento inaugurado oficialmente el 25 de octubre de 1939. Está compuesto por una torre-faro en estilo art decó, diseñada por el arquitecto Ignacio Mª Smith y por un conjunto escultórico en bronce, obra del artista Miguel García de Salazar. La escultura comprende los siguientes elementos: estatua sedente en bronce del homenajeado, Evaristo de Churruca, dos estatuas ubicadas lateralmente representando una a la “Industria” y la otra a la “Navegación”, y en el frente dos figuras representativas de Bilbao luchando contra Neptuno y entre ellos un gran bloque de escollera. Aparecen los escudos de Bizkaia y Gipuzkoa tallados en la misma piedra y el de Bilbao en bronce y bajorrelieve. La obra representa el triunfo de los trabajadores sobre la furia del mar, la victoria de los vizcaínos sobre la barra, la ría y El Abra, dominados definitivamente gracias, en gran medida, a las obras impulsadas por Evaristo de Churruca durante su etapa al frente de la Junta de Obras del Puerto.
[ENGLISH] This monument was officially unveiled on October 25, 1939. It comprises an art deco style lighthouse tower designed by architect Ignacio Mª Smith and a group of bronze sculptures by artist Miguel García de Salazar. The sculptures comprise a seated statue of Evaristo de Churruca himself flanked by two figures identified as “Industry” and “Shipping”, facing two more figures which represent Bilbao and Neptune pushing on either side of a breakwater. The coats of arms of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa are carved into the stone, and that of Bilbao appears in bas relief in bronze. This work represents the triumph of man against the fury of the sea, personified in the victory of the people of Bilbao over the sandbar, the river and the bay. This victory was due in no small measure to the work promoted by Evaristo de Churruca during his mandate as head of the Board of Works of the Port of Bilbao.
