The Island of Mozambique, located on the east african coast and bathed by the Indian Ocean, has long been an area of election for many travelers and merchants, which explains its enormous cultural and heritage diversity. Human activity dates from the 3rd century, initiated by the Bantu-speaking peoples and intensified from the 5th century, when the Arab expansion and subsequent settlement took place. It became a city on 17th September 1818, and remained the first capital of Mozambique until 1898, when the capital was transferred to Lourenço Marques (the current Maputo city). According to bibliographical sources, its name derives from an Arab sheik, lord of the Island, called Mussa Ben Mbiki or Mussal Bik whom Vasco da Gama and the first Portuguese navigators met in 1498. The Island of Mozambique, a strategic point for the development of transcontinental trade and support for Islamic expansion, which is an example the first mosque built in Mozambique, was also an important centre for the slave trade and for the trade routes control between the West, East (India) and the East African coast. Its historical and cultural singularity and its valuable architectural heritage earned UNESCO recognition, in 1991, as a World Heritage Site. Among the various buildings and in addition to the fortifications, the importance of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Bulwark, the Palace and Chapel of Saint Paul, the Church of Mercy, the Convent of Saint Domingos, the Church of Our Lady of the Health and the Hospital should be highlighted, as well as the Central Mosque, the Hindu Temple, the Trading Post and the House of the Slaves. In 2007, the construction of the Memorial Garden constituted a significant landmark to pay tribute to the abolition of slavery and to the preservation of the cultural diversity of peoples. With only 3 km of length and separated from the mainland by a bridge, the Island is endowed with an urban network comprising the "city of stone and lime", with remnants of testimonies of the Portuguese presence, and the "macuti city" built with local materials and techniques. The Island of Mozambique is an imaginary place, of rare beauty, hospitable and very affable people, which still conserves several forms of cultural manifestation (dances, typical costumes, gastronomy, linguistic and religious diversity, among others). These attractions, combined with opportunities for leisure, culture and historical revival, give the Island its character of unique tourist destination with unforgettable experiences.
