Already Statio of the Via Salaria in Roman times with the name of “Supircanum”, in 1225 Arquata (from arx, fortress) voluntarily submitted to Ascoli Piceno, getting a wide autonomy in exchange. In 1429 it passed under the rule of Norcia till the 18th century. During the Napoleonic invasion, in 1809, it was annexed to Umbria. After Napoleon, with the restoration of the pontifical government, it came back to the delegation of Ascoli Piceno. WORTH VISITING Very interesting is the medieval Fortress, built in the 13th century in a dominant position and rebuilt between the 14th and 15th centuries by Giovanna II from Naples. The Church of SS. Annunziata preserves a wooden crucifix of the 13th century. The Church of the Madonna della Neve, in the hamlet Faete , contains some frescoes by Pietro Alemanno. In the Church of St. Francesco, in the hamlet Borgo, you can find a copy of the Turin Shroud, made in the 17th century, three paintings of the 17th Century, a polychrome wooden statue of the 16th century representing St. Antonio da Padova, a fresco of a Madonna with Child and Saints. The Church of St. Agata, in the hamlet Spelonga, preserves important frescoes, a fine polychrome terracotta and a flag, stolen to the Turks during the Battle of Lepanto (1571). The Church of the

Madonna del Sole, in the hamlet Capodacqua, is a valuable octagonal structure of the 16th century, full of symbolic meanings. The Church of St. Silvestro, located in the hamlet Colle on a high cliff, contains frescoes, dated 1511. In the Church of San Pietro, in the hamlet Borgo, you can find a painting of the 16th century attributed to Cola dell’Amatrice. The parish Church of the Holy Crucifix, in the hamlet Pretare, preserves a carved and painted crucifix of the 17th century. Worth seeing also the Museum of Arte Immanente “Villa Papi”, founded in 1990 by the artist Diego Papi. WORTH TASTING Local specialities are: truffles, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts, pecorino cheese, potatoes, beans and cakes (mostaccioli). SOMETHING TO DO The following sport facilities are available: a soccer field, four tennis courts, a multipurpose gymnasium and a skating rink. You can enjoy winter sports in the famous ski resort of Forca Canapine (1541m); in Forca di Presta (1560m) you can enjoy free flights with hang-gliders and paragliders. WORTH DISCOVERING Arquata is the only Italian town between two parks: the Sibillini Mountains National Park and the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. It is the

starting point for different excursions, including walking, horse trekking and mountainbike itineraries.
