Special Thanks

The journey of IM Venture since its first day in 2014 has been a significant development within a span of one year. Following the success of 2014, IM Venture has expanded to include 3 trips this summer and 3 summer projects in 2015. These numerous projects and trips have allowed IMV family to expand its network and increase its engagement by tenfold to over 2000 total number of workshop participants, volunteers, trip participants, and organizing team members engaged. In particular, with the common theme of “Uncovering the Beauty of Ethnic Cultures, 3 trips were organized respectively in June, July and August across the land of Vietnam in 11 days, each trip taking 20 students of Vietnamese origin studying in 8 different countries around the world to travel together, form lasting friendships, enrich their personal and professional development through peer learning and trip activities. And for the first time, the 3 summer projects were first introduced and run in Saigon and Hanoi simultaneously and soon picked up with great enthusiasm and effort of the team to get it off the ground. They comprise of 3 projects which are IMV Summer Trek workshop series, Viet Venture city race, and the flash mob project iDance. Another year has passed by, and IM Venture, with growing number of talented people and projects, has enhanced the quality of its programs and widened its network and impact to provide every member of the family with valuable learning experience in an intimate setting with their peers, who are top talents of Vietnam around the world.

IM Venture is an enriching cultural and educational exchange program connecting Vietnamese students studying abroad to Vietnamese local students through a meaningful trip across Vietnam in 2 weeks. IM Venture trips challenge both groups to immerse in a culturally and historically rich trip across Vietnam. Throughout the trip, we hold group activities, forum discussions, and fireside chats to facilitate an ongoing conversation among the group members. The two groups of participants will discover and re-discover their identity as Vietnamese, explore the hidden charms of their native country and thereby develop an appreciation for their root. This happens as the two groups learn about and understand each other’s life stories. Participants from Vietnam who wish to pursue an education abroad will find in IM Venture valuable mentors, friends, and advisors. Meanwhile, Vietnamese students studying abroad will find a loving group of IM Venture family members at home who will help them understand and embrace their mother country’s people and culture even more. Our mission - Strengthen Vietnamese identity through travelling - Encourage personal development, self-reflection, and professional enrichment through workshops, coffee chats, and group activities - Build global connections and network for Vietnamese youths to serve as mentors, advisors, and life-long friends for one another.

Travel to love the beauty of

Vietnamese

ethnic cultures

The theme of all 2015 summer trips was “Uncovering The Beauty of Vietnamese Ethnic Cultures. 11 days of travel to different regions across Vietnam was a fascinating glimpse into the life and culture of Vietnamese ethnic groups. 3 regions - Northern, Central and Southern of Vietnam were portrayed regarding the local customs, their daily life, the languages of the ethnic groups as well as local authentic cuisines.

Southern Vietnam Saigon

Dashing into the little corners of Saigon to hide away from the crowded streets, we explored a unique restaurant of Writer Nguyen Nhat Anh, named Do Do, situated at the end in one of Saigonese alleys. Then we headed to visit the place of dream “Toa Tau which is belonged to Anh But Chi, a renown artist/entrepreneur among Saigon youths, to participate in an inspirational workshops with honorable guest speakers who are prominent professionals to hear about their success stories and learn from their valuable advice for young people growing up like us.

Phan Rang

We made a visit to Poklong Grai Temple of the Cham, one of the most ancient and magnificent temples well preserved until today. We learned from the stories and the customs behind our brother ethnicity and further got a lucky drop-in to Bau Truc pottery village where beautiful works of art are displayed. We had a good time playing around with the clay and the equipment to produce our own art products. Phan Rang was also a place for well-known grape fields where we went on a field trip to visit the grape field of Uncle Ba Moi. We had a swell time learning about the arduous process of growing and sustaining grape fields throughout the year and enjoyed the yummy taste of fresh grapes and grape syrup.

Da Lat

We went mountain trekking to reach the top of Mt. Lang Biang to be amazed by the landscape of the surrounding areas. We then rejoiced being lost in the Love amusement park with all sorts of childhood games. When the night came, we mingled in the vibrant life of local people who were trading busily at the night market, tasting a lot of good food from street ones to a well-known avocado ice cream shop.

Central Vietnam Da Nang – Hue

We spent a long time on a road trip crossing the two beautiful cities in the Central of Vietnam. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Every one of our experiences varied from person to person and couldn’t be captured in generic terms as these sceneries all meant and appreciated differently within our own individual perspectives. We traveled, as the sceneries never stop turning up in the front.

Chay Lap homestay – Phong Nha

For the first time we had a hands-on experience to help out the host to prepare a big feast and felt the hospitality in their smiles. It was a memorable experience immersing in a local life with local routine of the people in this part of the country

Phong Nha

The next day we went on a discovery trip to the mystery cave “Hang Ruou” in the central of Phong Nha. This is named after a myth of local people who used to use the cave for wine making. On the way to conquer Ruou cave, we walked across the landscape of the peaceful village where kids were playing, pointing and staring at us with curious eyes from both sidewalks.

Dong Hoi – Quang Binh

It was an unexpected surprise that we were brought to Nhat Le beach in the territory of Quang Binh province. A short summer day singing, dancing, relaxing along the white sand beach sparkling under the sunlight in the breeze. And the most favorite part began when we had the most hilarious adventure over the night in the train to Hanoi when more than 20 of us packed in 1 room to play mafia past midnight

Buon Ma Thuot

Dropping a visit to the village’s house of culture, we listened to the stories of how local people live a rustic yet fascinating self-sustaining life. As this destination is known for the home of elephants, we had a chance to witness the traces left in the house of the village’s father of elephant hunting. Then we got the chance to pass across the Serepok river to see our elephant buddies.

Lak Lake

We were amazed to discover got to Lak Lake. We took a sh small village of the M’nong. A with a boat trip to Lak Lake in that looks like wooden canoe traditional dance of the M’nong danced along with them

that life is full of colors when we hort walk through the heart of the And eventually we were rewarded n the most awesome kind of boat e. At night, we went to see the g - Tay Nguyen gongs; sang and

Northern Vietnam Hanoi

What are the must-eat dishes in Hanoi? A lot of us might have different answers. But this time we tried Pho in Ly Quoc Su street in the early morning of Hanoi. This bustling city was in fact a gentle charm in the early morning. We couldn’t waste any moment to walk half across Guom Lake, then we quickly had to catch the our trip to visit Mai Chau.

Mai Chau

A night spent well on cultural exchange with the Thai ethnicity. We buried all signs of shyness to perform a few entertainment shows in exchange to the colorful dances – Mua Sap of the Thai. The next day was an early morning when we went on an excursion across the rice fields, passing by the mountains by bike, despite a few getting lost, a few getting felt off the bike, but all we saw was happiness in all our faces.

Back to Hanoi and Final Gala

The most emotional and saddest yet happiest moment of our trip. We sat together in an intimate room, performing for one another, reflecting, and expressing our deepest thoughts and wishes for one another before departing. We were sad to have to leave this trip behind but we were happy to have formed some a tight family in merely 10 days. Tears shed but our friendships don’t erode. We continued to reunite, share pictures, Skype, Facebook, and kept in touch with one another following our trip. Farewell!

GRAND GALA 2015

Highlighted activities of the 2015 program 1. Coffee chat in Ho Chi Minh City

We hosted a coffee chat with talented and high profile professionals from various backgrounds, who hold vibrant philosophies of life and a passion to talk and exchange their stories to the young people. Some notable guest speakers in 2015 were Chi Van Tran - a former college professor and now inspirational vlogger, Chi Ha Cao - an alumnus from Harvard Business School and current General Director of Education First. Anh But Chi or Do Huu Chi - a comic artist, art instructor and co-founder of Toa Tau Creative Learning Hub, Anh Hoai Chung – co-founder of Stella Education, a stop to study in the US, Chi Quynh - a Smith College scholarship recipient, graduated w/ a BA in Government studies and Chi Linh - a pharmacist researcher from Boston, who has been leading a number of philanthropic activities at Everest Education. The workshop is a platform for the participants to listen to the sharing of the guest speakers about their lives and also a place to ask and bring their matters into discussion by asking questions. In this session of 2015 workshop, the speakers share the same interest in Vietnamese education reform, who are enthusiastic about nurturing and educating a generation of talented youtother thi The topic of the workshop was essentially focused on study path and education. The questions discussed were to tackle education ambiguity and concerns about its purpose, how to get inspired and how to know your major of interest to apply for a course in university. A part from that, the questions designed allow an informal, friendly atmosphere for us to touch on any individuals’ concerns about life and to get useful advices from the speakers. From the guest speakers’ real experiences and interesting true stories, not only our concerns about studying matters are resolved but also our minds are filled with inspirations as well as encouraging motivations to continue walking on our dream paths.

2. Student-led seminars

For the first time, we have executed a new program for participants to take part on their learning journey while going on the trip. With the objectives of promoting peer learning and highlighting everyone’s unique talent, we utilize student-led seminars as a platform for our trip participants to shine and become inspired by their peers. What is the students-led seminar about? It allows students to discover a field of interest for any skills and topics that they are interested in, and from that to prepare a short presentation in 10-12 minutes to become the best knowledgeable person in the room and teach others about their chosen skills or topics. These skills may be martial arts, magic tricks or debate skills. Students are grouped into a team of 4 to 5 people and must work together to decide the organisation of the presentation to make it a fun, entertaining performance. This students-led seminar has encouraged students to discover themselves in both their strengths and weaknesses, to boost their confidence, and also acts as stimulation for them to cherish the power of peer learning.

3. Deep talks – circle of discussion

This activity remarks the spirit of IM Venture since its first days born. We believe in the key importance of appreciating and understanding yourself and the people around you. After a long day with full of activities, we sat down in a circle to talk about our feelings, sharing with one another our personal worries, insecurities, or important milestones in our lives to help us understand one another. Through this activity, we knew a lot more about our friends, which is very important for our participants to become more open-minded, gain new perspectives, and form strong friendships with one another.

4. Trip diary

Each class together made its own diary to record valuable moments and experiences shared together throughout the 2-week journey.

5. Gossip and wish-list

One of the most remembered activities during our trips. A usual activity that allowed us to learn more about each other during long bus rides.

6. Secret Buddy

At the beginning of the trip, each member was a secret buddy to take care of throughout the trip. His or her mission was to secretly take care of this person without letting him or her know.

7. Skill training workshops

These workshops served as skill training opportunities for IM Venture participants. Under the lead of two trip leaders, participants had the chance to share experiences and learn more about communication, leadership, presentation, and networking skills.

8. Project 20

Per IM Venture trip, 20 attendees and 2 trip leaders were responsible for thinking about 1 grand project related to the mission of IM Venture or the trip of IM Venture. This allowed all 20 members to work together as a team, under leadership of 2 team leaders, on 1 grand project. The project is chosen by team leaders.

9. Grand Gala

This is the final gala at the end of the trip, organized by IM Venture participants. Our participants performed for one another, shared farewell wishes for each other before departing, and together celebrated the valuable times and memories that we had shared during the trip. Lots of tears and smiles were mixed together as we were sad to leave the trip behind but ecstatic and proud to have become a true family after the trip.

10. Team bonding games

Beside these main activities, there were other fun and educational games for trip participants to learn about teamwork and experience Vietnamese folk cultures.

Recruitment statistics

The session for participant enrollment has ended and the recruitment team could not be happier to announce the total number of selected participants. 1. The number of application form was 252 submissions. 2. The countries represented include USA, UK, Finland, Italy, India, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Germany, Russia. 3. There were 70 high schools and 47 colleges around the world represented.

Class of 2015

Profiles The final result of accepted participants was completed in April to welcome on board 63 participants and trip leaders, together with our founder and 3 trip organizers, forming a family of 67 together this summer.. The application and interviewing rounds help guarantee that IM Venture gather a diverse group of students from all across Vietnam (in 2015 there were participants from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hue, Buon Ma Thuot, Hai Phong, Bien Hoa – Dong Nai, Ha Tinh, Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa, Vung Tau) and in various countries around the world (India, US, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, Finland, Canada, etc). In comparison to 2014 trip, the variety of the participants is significantly diverse in 2015, covering many parts of the country that we could not have reached last year. This substantial difference of this year trip compared to the one last year was an increase in the number of trips to be organized. We have accommodated more trips in 2015 with a total of 3 trips, in three continuous months over the summer: the June trip (6/6 – 16/6), July trip (15/7 – 25/7) and August trip (1/8 – 11/8).

Notes/Reflections from

(Ngô Mai Nhật Huy – June Trip Participant) “When I think about IM Venture, it kind of hurts my heart. That unknown factor of not knowing when I'll get to see everyone again but I have to remind myself to miss someone you have to be lucky enough to have people you truly love and care for. Even laying down in my bed right now, I'm thinking about the 23 people I've lived together with in those 11 days and how we did everything together. I will not forget eating that first night in Saigon and learning Vietnamese slang words as well as ripping toilet paper and sharing a fact about ourselves past midnight. I won't forget partying on the second day on the bus. That tour bus definitely became a party bus with us blasting music in the back and rocking out with the bumpy roads…” (Nguyễn Trung Trà My – July Trip Leader)

(Nguyễn Hữu Đức– July Trip Participant) “If only I could put you all in my suitcase and take you guys with me, I would, in a heartbeat. But I can’t, and that’s just something I need to be mature enough to let go of. I love you guys, more than you will ever understand. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart and please always remember this summer. Finally, the stars are all alight.”

Together with participants from June, July and August trips as well as hundreds of local participants and volunteers, IM Venture established 3 summer projects related to personal and professional development to give back to the community and allow our members to learn and practice leadership skills through hands-on activities. The organizing team of IM Venture has put a lot of effort to make the projects assessable in the 2 big cities of Vietnam, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

1. IM Venture Summer Trek Workshop series IM Venture Summer Trek is a series of inspirational and skill development workshops. Workshop content covers a wide range of applicable and relevant skills for practical topics such as job application, extracurricular activities, nurturing your dream and so on. The workshop series, which are free to the public, offers a place for discussion and an exchange of knowledge that in some way allow the audiences to look at the world from a new angle or view a familiar topic from a different point of view. IM Venture Summer Trek carried out 8 workshops from June to August, which comprise of the following topics: # 1 Levering extra-curricular activities for essential life skills learning # 2 Writing an effective resume # 3 What I wish I could have done before I was 21 # 4 Dare to dream # 5 Learn to travel, travel to learn # 6 Top most wanted skills in 21st century # 7 Extreme self-makeover # 8 Change +

2. Viet Venture: Hanoi - Saigon - Hue Viet Venture is a mini project that organizes city exploration challenge for participants in Hanoi and Saigon. The participants must prepare themselves good enough to enter the race in one straight day from the morning until the evening and perform smoothly as a team to overcome the challenges. In Hanoi, there are a total of 7 teams, 30+ participants and supervisors, and participants are challenged to complete the race in 7 locations across Hanoi. In Saigon, there are a total of 10 teams, 50+ participants and supervisors, and participants are challenged to complete the race in 10 locations across Saigon. Viet Venture is not about the race to define the winner, it is a race where everyone can really learn by interacting with other team members, with the people where they live, and to help them realize the hidden value of the place where they have grown up in. Some parts of the race have been video recorded in Saigon, this can be viewed in the link on Youtube as follow: https://goo.gl/1393dR #Hanoi

On 18th - 19th August 2015, IM Venturers have an opportunity to reunite in Hue and visit Lang Sinh to meet Mr. Ky Huu Phuoc, an artist who has been creating and preserving the tradition of painting "tranh dan gian" (traditional painting in Vietnam) in Vietnam. Mr. Phuoc and his wife are the 9th generation within his family to specialize in painting "tranh dan gian." During the Vietnam War, after "tranh dan gian" was banned by the government, Mr. Phuoc fought hard to protect this traditional art. He hid in an underground tunnel to continue painting for the next 10 years until the ban was lifted. At Lang Sinh, we had the opportunity to learn how "do" paper was made, how color was created, and how to make a simple version of "tranh dan gian." In addition, all IM Venturers in Hue had an opportunity to reunite and bond over good food, good companions, and beautiful views.

3. iDance iDance is a city-wide flashmob event, with the theme of “Everyone can Dance, that engaged over 100 members around the city to express themselves and to get out of their comfort zone via dancing.
