A QUARTER CENTURY WITH COACH NOW ENTERING HER 25TH YEAR AT TULANE, LISA STOCKTON HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH GREEN WAVE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL In 1994, Tulane Director of Athletics Kevin White hired a new women’s basketball coach. Lisa Stockton, then an assistant coach from Georgia Tech, was tasked with bringing the Green Wave to the next level. The Green Wave had a small measure of success the year before Stockton arrived, reaching the national postseason for the first time ever. Stockton found that next level quickly. With NCAA Tournament berths in her first nine seasons, Lisa Stockton cemented herself as a Tulane legend in her first decade alone. Now, entering her 25th year with the program in 2018-19, it’s hard to imagine anyone else at the helm of the Green Wave program.
No one in the history of Tulane women’s basketball is even close to Stockton’s career numbers. She has more than nine times as many wins as her closest Green Wave head coach competition. In 2016, Tulane Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair Troy Dannen announced another contract extension for Stockton, keeping her at Tulane through the 2020-21 season. “Her program has a long-standing record of not only on-court success, but also a record of developing outstanding young women who have moved on to successful careers,” Dannen said. “She stands as a great example for our department, our campus, and our community of the impact successful leadership can have.”
The numbers are staggering: three decades, three conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season After 24 full years in charge of the Green Wave, Stockton will be hitting championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven her silver anniversary in 2018-19. It’s hard to imagine anyone else on the WNIT spots and nearly 500 wins at Tulane. Tulane bench.
