delft survival guide Surviving breakfast They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you’re sick and tired of cornflakes or not-so-great coffee in your faculty, don’t fret. There are a few places in Delft that open well before 9:00 and even have special breakfast spreads. La Bottega del Caffe Hankering for a good cup of coffee at 7:00? La Bottega is the place for you. A new addition to Delft, Dutch restaurateur Thierry Karreman and his Italian partner Jasmina Campochiaro opened the café just before Christmas with a changing menu of Mediterranean delicacies. For breakfast you can enjoy an Italian croissant (€1) with jam or chocolate (€1.20) and a cup of coffee made from a special blend imported from Italy. “It’s strong Italian coffee, but isn’t bitter,” says Karreman. Small and cosy, the place has number of art and architecture books lying around in case you’re up for early morning inspiration. Where: Delfgauwseweg 165 Opening Time: 7:00

Bakker Bart Want a delicious breakfast bargain? Head to Bakker Bart. From 8:00 to 10:00 every day they serve a special breakfast menu for €2.50, which includes a cup of tea/coffee, orange juice, a mini sandwich with ham and cheese and a croissant with butter and jam. “It’s a popular deal, we get a lot of people in for breakfast through the week,” says manager Marc Schoonhoven. You can also have a croissant with raisins or chocolates (€1.75),” says Elisa De Ruijter, the manager. A smooth latte, a favourite with students, costs €2.90 for a small cup and if you’d like one with additional flavours, it will cost €3.10. Where: Markt 19 Opening time: 7:30 on weekdays

(€5.50). You could also try pancakes with honey or bacon (€7.00) or stick to healthier options such as yogurt with honey, cruesli and fruit (€5.00). “Our breakfast menu is really popular because we have different savouries, muffins, combinations and even a breakfast platter,” says Taco Beglinger, the owner. “Monday mornings are quiet across town so we open late, but Thursdays and Fridays are particularly popular with students for breakfast,” he adds. On the first Sunday of every month they offer a full English breakfast from 10:00 onwards. Where: Brabantse Turfmarkt 32a Opening time: 8.30am Tuesday to Saturday

Hema/Ikea/Jumbo None of these might sound like great breakfast venues, but you’ll be surprised to learn that they all have breakfast menus for a steal. All-purpose store Hema has a breakfast offer for €1, which includes a cup of coffee, a croissant with jam and an

egg sandwich. You can even ask for two strips of bacon for 25 cents extra. Breakfast is served only until 10:00. Jumbo has a breakfast buffet of sorts. For €1.50 you can choose three items from a range of items such as fresh juice, yogurt with topping, eggs, bacon, baguette, croissants etc. If you’d like more, you have to pay 50 cents extra. Breakfast is served from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 and from 9:00 to 11:00 on Sundays. At IKEA breakfast starts late, at 9:00, but is worth a shot. Besides a €1 breakfast platter, you can get bacon strips (29 cents), sausages (99 cents), pancakes (99 cents). Breakfast is served until 10:30.
