Intro: Kettlebell Training For Rehabilitation APRIL 2019 About The Course: Kettlebells, invented by the Russians in the 1700s for the purpose of weighing crops, have been popularised over the centuries as a fantastic modality for strength and conditioning. With more training facilities adding kettlebells into their range of equipment, a strong grasp on specific kettlebell techniques and training methodologies will empower you to maximise its benefits. This workshop aims to introduce participants to the anatomy of kettlebells and the benefits of using them in a rehabilitation setting. The workshop also aims to equip participants with the knowledge on how to incorporate kettlebell training into their clinical practice. Participants can expect to learn how to administer screening tools on clients for suitability of kettlebell training and to demonstrate basic lifting techniques safely and efficiently at the end of the workshop. Assisting Our Orthopaedic Patients In Activities Safely During Therapy 10 MAY 2019 About The Course: Orthopaedic patients may be challenging to engage in therapy and may require encouragement or pacing strategies to participate. We may find the need to think “out-of-the-box” to assist our patients with orthopaedic conditions in activities of daily living (ADLs). Patients’ participation and performance in ADLs are often limited by pain and decreased range of motion or strength of limbs. Furthermore, these patients commonly face pre-op or post-op precautions that many of us may be unfamiliar with. This workshop aims to equip participants with the basic knowledge of orthopaedic conditions and its common management during therapy sessions. This includes understanding the application of frequently used orthoses, proper positioning and set-up during transfers, as well as other skills required for facilitating patients with orthopaedic conditions during ADLs. Clinical Application Of Occupational Therapy In Dementia Care Management 30 - 31 MAY 2019 About The Course: Dementia represents a major public health concern in Singapore and worldwide. It diminishes a person's ability to take care of oneself and causes problems with executive planning and communication. It also leads to changes in personality and behaviour, posing greater challenges in elderly care. Being the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease, dementia is expected to affect 55,000 patients in Singapore by the year 2020. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to equip themselves with the knowledge of holistic and optimal care in dementia. This workshop aims to impart participants with the skills and knowledge in the care and management of clients with mild cognitive impairment, up to severe dementia. It covers topics integral to holistic dementia care and functional management including occupational engagement, cognitive stimulation and environmental modification. Step Up With Otago (SUO) Training Workshop MAY 2019 About The Course: This workshop aims to provide participants with an understanding of the rationale behind the Otago Exercise Programme (OEP), an evidence-based fall prevention programme for older adults. There will be a heavy emphasis on exercise leadership skills in a 1to-1 or group setting, including theories of leading, coaching and instructing exercise. The workshop will involve numerous practical, discussion and feedback sessions throughout the classroom training day in order to promote a handson approach and enhance learning amongst participants. Participants who complete the classroom training will be required to sit for a practical assessment. Upon passing the assessment, they will receive the OEP Leader Certificate, coawarded by Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Community Health Engagement Programme (CHEP) and Later Life Training (UK). Basic Vestibular Rehabilitation Workshop JUNE 2019 About The Course: Vestibular rehabilitation adopts an exercise-based approach in the management of dizziness and balance disorders associated with vestibular pathology. This course aims to equip physiotherapists with the knowledge and skills to evaluate and treat common vestibular disorders, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and unilateral and bilateral vestibular loss resulting from peripheral vestibular dysfunctions, traumatic brain injury and stroke. The lectures and practical sessions will be aimed at promoting the integration and application of evaluation and treatment techniques for patients with vestibular disorders. This course comes complete with interactive video laboratory sessions, case studies discussion which aim to challenge physiotherapists toward a problem-solving approach. The practical and written competency examinations at the end of the course aim to enhance the skills and knowledge of physiotherapists so that they feel confident in managing patients with vestibular dysfunctions. Occupational Therapists’ Role In Returning To Drive Following A Medical Condition 12 JULY 2019 About The Course: Driving is an important and instrumental activity of daily living for many individuals, especially in developed countries like Singapore. Since driving is a complex task involving integration of one's psychomotor, cognitive, perceptual and visual skills, individuals with new medical conditions or agerelated changes in health may affect their ability to drive safely. Assisting a patient to return to drive is often one of the most challenging tasks faced by occupational therapists. This 2-hour interactive workshop would help occupational therapists to better determine if the client needs a driving assessment. Participants will be able to identify the performance skills required for safe driving. It will also discuss some commonly used screening tests that occupational therapists may utilise to identify at-risk drivers. Wheelchair Maintenance Workshop 26 JULY 2019 About The Course: Wheelchairs and pressure relief cushions help to promote independence and active participation in activities of daily living, thereby enhancing quality of life. Often the maintenance of equipment is neglected, resulting in malfunctioning wheelchairs and pressure relief cushions, which can cause inconvenience and even danger to the users. Regular maintenance of these equipment can prolong the lifespan of the assistive device, as well as ensure the safety and comfort of the users. This one-day workshop aims to impart participants with the skills and knowledge on the current practices in routine wheelchair and pressure relief cushion maintenance. Exercise Instruction And Manual Handling For Therapy Assistants JULY 2019 About The Course: This course is designed to enhance the skill of exercise instructions for common upper and lower limb therapeutic exercises. Orientation And Mobility For Adults - An Introduction 12 & 19 SEPTEMBER 2019 About The Course: Orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists instruct clients (mainly but not limited to clients with low vision and blindness) how to move about their environments in a safe, efficient and graceful manner. OTs and PTs may encounter clients with visual impairments or blindness in the course of their work. Therapists in acute settings can start working with clients with low vision/blindness in basic orientation, mobility skills and concepts within the ward. This can help with discharge planning and determining if the client is likely to pick up sufficient O&M skills for independence. Therapists working in the community will also benefit from learning how to assess if their clients will benefit from O&M, identify when cane users might need to brush up on their skills, and how to best work with an O&M specialist. Occupational Therapy In Parkinson’s Disease Rehabilitation 18 OCTOBER 2019 About The Course: With a rapidly ageing population in Singapore, the number of people with Parkinson Disease (PD) is expected to rise. PD greatly affects a person’s lifestyle, including difficulties in performing activities of daily living, areas of self-care, work and leisure. In the rehabilitation management of PD, Occupational Therapy plays an important role in helping clients with PD maintain daily living skills, and learn new methods/strategies in order to overcome the limitations caused by PD and to improve their quality of life. Physical Agent Modalities In Occupational Therapy 7 - 8 NOVEMBER 2019 About The Course: Physical Agent Modalities (PAMs) are often used as an adjunct to occupational therapy interventions. For clients with musculoskeletal or neurological disorders, the associated pain experienced can lead to decrease in motivation and participation in activities. The use of PAMs aid in pain modulation, tissue healing, increase tissue extensibility, modify skin and scar tissue and reduce oedema and inflammation. By addressing these symptomatic presentations, it enhances occupational engagement, maximizes client’s independence in daily living and improves their quality of life. This workshop will discuss the fundamental underlying principles, indications, contraindications, and precautions for the use of superficial and deep thermal and electrotherapeutic modalities. Clinicians will be educated on the proper, safe and judicious use of PAMs in treating their clients from a functional occupational based approach. Advanced Vestibular Rehabilitation Workshop FEBRUARY 2020 About The Course: Vestibular rehabilitation adopts an exercise-based approach in the management of dizziness and balance disorders associated with vestibular pathology. This advanced level course will include topics such as Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness, advanced techniques in BPPV management, motion sickness, cervicogenic dizziness, vestibular migraine associated dizziness, and cervicogenic dizziness. The effects of ageing on the vestibular system, medical conditions and their relation to vestibular system function, concussion management and post-trauma vision syndrome will also be discussed.

Damage to the nervous system can have a negative impact on gait, resulting in a locomotion pattern that is neither safe nor efficient. Ankle foot orthoses (AFOS) are the most commonly prescribed orthotic devices intended to improve abnormal gait patterns resulting from neurological conditions. Choosing the appropriate orthosis from the plethora of available orthotic options is a problem that health professionals who work with patients with neurological conditions face on a daily basis. Management Of Diabetic Foot In The Community To Be Confirmed About The Course: With the aging population and a higher incidence of patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, healthcare professionals such as nurses, therapists and therapy aides are needed to have specific skills sets to manage a list of problems they may face when treating their patients in the community. Nurses, therapists and therapy aides working in the community are often called upon to manage the feet of their patients. This may include simple diabetic foot screening and toenail cutting. This course is specially designed to equip nurses, therapists and therapy aides with the necessary skill sets to carry out a simple diabetic foot screening to classify and stratify their patients’ foot status, and provide toenail cutting services when appropriate. The 1.5 day course will comprise of lectures, workshops with hands-on practice and a competency test.
