Letters to the Editor Widows' Paradise, a great night out.

As I am not one to attend many plays, I could count all the plays I've been to on one hand and am missing two fingers. So not knowing what to expect, I was very surprised and delighted to find myself laughing and giggling throughout the play. Well done to all the performers and staff, it truely was an hilarious play. For me, it took me back to the good ole days of the Carry on Films. Harmless family fun with a few naughty jokes, that the kids never pick up on. Also besides the play being so good, it was great to see so many people I knew.

Congratulations to Nicola Rodgers and Tony Togher who were married on the 13th April 2013, we wish them every happiness in their lives together.

Question: When I cancelled my membership of my local leisure centre over a year ago, I opted out of any further contact. Recently, the leisure centre has been sold and I have been receiving unsolicited marketing texts from the new management. Can I stop receiving these texts? Answer: Data Protection legislation takes the sending of unsolicited direct marketing very seriously and offers protection against this practice. The Electronic Privacy Regulations (SI 336 of 2011) give you the right to prevent organisations from using electronic means (phone, text, email, fax) to contact you to sell you a product or service.

Community

Under the law, companies may not send marketing emails or texts, or make marketing calls to individuals, unless those individuals have opted to receive them. Furthermore, they can also only hold contact details on file for 12 months without renewing consent. It is also illegal to pass on contact information to others. In your case, it is over 12 months since you left the leisure centre and you requested that your contact details be removed from their database. Instead it would appear that these details have been passed on to someone with whom you have had no previous contact. In all of these instances, the law is being broken and you have every right not to receive these unsolicited marketing texts. You can make a complaint to the Data Protection Commissioner in writing, via e-

You should also provide information about any previous dealings with the sender of the message as well as a statement that you are making a formal complaint. Additionally, if the Commissioner decides to prosecute an offender, you may be asked to give a sworn statement or to appear in court to give evidence. Wellbeing

HIDING UNDER THE KITCHEN TABLE FROM THE WIFE MIGHT BE A VIABLE OPTION! I once heard of a man that took refuge under the kitchen table to avoid his wife’s temper. The advice he got from his therapist earlier was to ‘do something different’ in the face of her predictable behaviour. It turned out that the wife was so stunned by this amazing act of self protection that she burst out laughing, and they were able to sort things out from there. Well, you can chance your arm, but the table strategy may not always save you … especially if it’s your only way to cope! Mind you, the dog might enjoy your company. Communicating our needs can be very challenging in the heat of the moment….. what can you do? Normally we embrace blaming, judging and labelling very quickly …. ‘I told you so …’ You are wrong’ ‘Idiot’ etc. This type of response can reward us with disconnection which may not offer a very fulfilling way of relating. Marshall Rosenberg’s Compassionate Communication (www.cnvc.org) offers another approach; we place our attention on feelings and needs. Instead of; ‘You are lazy, you never do the washing up. ’ It could go instead; I feel frustration (feeling) because when I see those unwashed dishes, what I really want is your help and support (needs). So the person can really connect with ‘help and support’ but you are less likely to get either connection or cooperation with the first scenario. Connection is the heart of all relating.

completely new and exciting three-day Outreach Concert programme that will involve all of the children at the School in a series of concerts and workshops. The entire school will perform a short piece of their own composition as part of the final free concert - on Thursday 16th May at 6.30pm in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet. This concert is for the whole community and for all ages and it will feature the WhistleBlast Quartet performing the mini-orchestral sounds of Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Overture, James Bond themes, excerpts from Carmen, The Pink Panther and much more!

Method Heat a wok until smoking and add some low cal spray oil. Fry the chicken for 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp, then remove with a slotted spoon and drain on absorbent kitchen paper. For the stir fry, add some more low cal spray oil to the pan, at a high heat, add the onion and stir fry for a few seconds. Add the yellow and red pepper slices and stir fry for one minute, or until softened. Add the chicken pieces and stir fry for 1-2 minutes, then add the stock and soy sauce. Simmer for another minute, or until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the spring onions and cashew nuts, season, to taste, with sea salt and ground white pepper and transfer to a serving dish. Serve immediately with steamed rice.

This event takes place during the Bealtaine Festival - everyone in the Community is welcome so please do come along for some fun and great music! The WhistleBlast Quartet is funded by Mayo County Council, The Arts Council, The National Concert Hall Education Programme, Blackshell Farm Limited and on this occasion, Áras Inis Gluaire. Participating schools also contribute to the programme cost. Blacksod Bay Railway Terminus courtesy A leonard

On 8th August 2012, the Met Office in Belmullet became the last synoptic observing weather station to be automated. To mark this milestone the current staff, as part of the year of ‘The Gathering’ have invited back to Erris all those who had worked there since September 1956, fifty people in total. As part of the celebrations Met Eireann are holding an exhibition of its history, with particular relevance to Belmullet on Friday 17th May at the Met Office in Carne from 2 pm to 6 pm and again from 12 pm to 4 pm on Saturday 18th May in the Civic Centre, Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet. All members of the public are welcome to come along to the exhibition which should be of interest to many, given the nation’s fascination with the weather and all things meteorological.

This is an extract from The Building News and Engineering Journal Oct 13 1915. Here at Ionad Deirbhile we have more pictures and information regarding this interesting find. “Blacksod Bay Railway Terminus Station in the Harbour, Mayo, Connaught, Ireland. We give to-day an interior of the station hall or concourse, with an exterior perspective and plan, reduced, on a separate sheet, with the entrance elevation of this station, which has been designed to be built on a reef of rock projecting into Blacksod Bay, and to be a terminus for the Transatlantic traffic. The largest liners are able to berth at the end of this reef, which is the reason for the railway station being so placed. The construction of the building is intended to be carried out in reinforced concrete. The main feature is the concourse, which forms a waiting-place between the platforms and the harbour. The interior perspective shown by our double-page plate was included in the Royal Academy Exhibition this year. The architects are Messrs. E. B. Hoare and M. Wheeler FF.R.I.B.A. of Portman Street, Portman Square W.” Visit Ionad Deirbhile at www.ionaddeirbhile.ie or call into Ionad Deirbhile Visitor Centre, Eachéim, Blacksod. Keep an eyeanoneye the Keep Sean of the Island

on

Long ago there lived a man in Inis Glora who was known locally as Sean of the island after his wife died he went to live on the mainland in a place known locally as Anagh which lies not too far north of the island. Often Sean would row his currach back and forth to the island to fish and visit old friends. On one occasion he was delayed and didn’t leave until late in the evening, with the dusk half way on the journey whilst rowing his currach at a distance behind the currach he saw a horse appearing out of the sea and disappeared again a short while later it came back up but this time much closer to the end of the currach and the third time it came up it put its two front legs in over the end cross piece and into the currach suddenly a red haired woman appeared and shouldered the horse back into the sea then she turned to Sean who was still sitting in the front seat of the currach rowing as fast as he could, there was another woman sitting in the currach along with Sean who accompanied him on his journey on that day, the red haired woman shouted to Sean do you know who I am? to which Sean replied yes, I do! you are my deceased wife, now I am going to give you some advice don’t ever come this way again so late always try and be first but if you can’t don’t ever be last and with that she disappeared. And front until his dying day, Sean never returned to Inis Glora. Seán an Oileáin Bhí fear ina chónaí in Inis Gluaire fadó a dtugadh siad Sean an Oileáin air, faoi cheann scathadh fuair a bheann bás agus chuaigh sé a chónaí go hEannach atá giota ó Thuaidh air thaobh na Tíre Móire. Théadh Seán go mion ‘s go minic air cuairt go Inis Gluaire air feadh na mblianta ina dhiaidh sin. An lá áirthid seo cuireadh moill air agus bhí sé bun-mhall nuair a d’fhág sé an tIoleán, ach leis an gclop-sholas agus é leath beallaí idir dhá thalamh chonaic sé béitheach capaill ag éirí í ndiaidh an churraí aníos as an bhfarraige agus ag goil síos aríst. Nuair tháinig sí aníos an darna h-uair bhí sí níos goire dó, ach air theacht aníos duith an triú h-uair nocht sí fhéin isteach air dheireadh an churraí. Tháinig bean rua í ndeireadh an churraí, thug guailinn gon bhéitheach agus chuir amach a bhfarraige í. Ansin labhair sí amach le Seán a bhí ina shuí air an tseas tosaigh agus bhí bean eile sa gcurrach chómh maith. An aithnaíonn tú mé? arsa an bhean rua. Aithnaiom arsa Seán, is tú mo bhean phóstaí. Bheil, ar sise ná bí chómh mall seo choíche aríst, má thig leat é bí í dtoiseach ach ná bí ar deireadh. Ón lá sin go lá a bháis níor sheas Seán in Inis Gluaire ní ba mhó. Courtesy Turas Siar
