Love is in the air for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Christmas Charity Mistletoe Ball
Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation launched their new Christmas Charity Ball with An Taoiseach and his wife Fionnuala Kenny on hand to do the honours. The newly named Mistletoe Ball will take place on December 12th in Breaffy House Resort. ?We are thrilled that An Taoiseach and Mrs Kenny agreed to launch the Mistletoe Ball by posing for some fun photos in Breaffy House recently?, explains Laurita Blewitt Mayo Roscommon Hospice. The Mistletoe Ball (formally known as the ICE Ball) promises to be a festive night of entertainment, food, music and fabulous company and will be in aid of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice new Hospice/Palliative Care Unit in Castlebar with some surprises on the night too. Planning has now been granted for Phase One, which is a 14-bed unit at Knockaphunta, Castlebar and will cater for people and families dealing with a life limiting illness in Mayo and Roscommon. Phase Two will follow on with an 8-bed Unit in Roscommon. The night will begin with a champagne reception, followed by a sumptuous three-course dinner in the function room. ?We will have some very special guests there on the night and music will be performed by the infamous band, The Conquerors. This promises to be a fun filled night with prizes and an auction with some once in a lifetime pieces.? We are hoping many companies across both counties Mayo and Roscommon will make this their Christmas party night?, reveals acting fundraising manager Laurita Blewitt. While this event is not black tie, many will dress to impress, but as always, the emphasis is on the fun of the season and raising vital funds for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. ?We would like to thank all of you who have purchased tickets to previous years and in doing so, have supported your local Hospice to raise the ?2 million that is needed to fund Palliative Care Services. Mindspace?s aim is to support young people aged 15-25 who are going through a difficult time to ensure they get the support they need. The centre in the Market Square, Castlebar provides a welcoming space for young people to call in, get information or have a chat one?to-one with a support worker. If a young person wants support, our staff are there to listen, without making judgements, and to provide supportive guidance. We also provide information and advice to anyone who is worried about a friend or young person in their life. New Parking Arrangement in Castlebar

Castlebar shoppers can look forward to a more relaxed shopping experience with new parking charges now in place in the towns three main car parks! With immediate effect ?3.00 all day parking is now in place at Castle Street, Main Street and Market Square car parks. This is a welcome move from the towns traders and it is hoped that people can now shop in the County town at their leisure and visit the large selection of shopping in close proximity to these car parks. The better parking rates came about after a number of traders in the town came together with Mayo County Council to try and make shopping and parking easier in the town. Castlebar traders have welcomed the move and stated "we have seen many situations in the past where customers are rushing back to their car because time may be out on a ticket. This all day parking fee eliminates that fear of getting a parking ticket and will hopefully mean a better shopping experience all round" "We hope this ease of parking fees along with lots of great value and choice will see people choose Castlebar as their shopping destination" Whilst it is being rolled out on a temporary basis at the moment until December the traders hope it will remain in place for the future.

A little bit about "The Men's Shed" The concept behind the Mens Shed movement originated in Australia in the mid 1990`s with the aim of improving the overall wellbeing of the older men in the community through providing a space where men could gather together to work on projects and socialise. By 2007 backed by the Australian Government the AMSA was founded to help promote and develop Mens' Sheds on a nationwide basis. John Evoy introduced the Shed Movement to Ireland and the IMSA was set up here in 2011. Castlebar Men's Shed was established in April 2012. This stemmed from the observation that there was an urgent need to promote and protect the wellbeing, both mental and physical of the men of our community. The men?s shed is about MEN?S HEALTH. It provides a haven that many men need. A place they can identify with; a place there they talk freely, be themselves, make friends, share information and skills. On an emotional level, they feel better about themselves; gain a sense of belonging, self-worth and respect. There are not many of us men who can?t identify with some potentially degenerative conditions at some stage of our lives; be it redundancy, ill health, retirement, depression, bereavement, isolation, loneliness etc. That all sounds very gloomy; but every shed has its own ?shed load of stories?and characters to match. Ours is no different and it?s just as well that the kettle (the most important item in any shed) can?t talk!!! A shed's focus and potential is limited only by the imaginations, interests and commitments of its members. Men of all ages are welcome; and women also (if they so wish) can join us ? ?cause we still do need some gentle guidance in our (desperate) lives!! All are welcome. So, come along and see if you can better our residential pranksters, storytellers, tea drinkers and (even) workers amongst us!! All help very welcome.

Castlebar v Buccaneers, Connacht League Round 1 Match Report: Castlebar Ladies Rugby team began the defence of their Connacht League title on Sunday October 4th against Buccaneers of Athlone at Castlebar RFC. While the result of 19-5 in favour of Castlebar suggests a comprehensive win, it doesn?t do justice to the pressure they were put under by their opposition for the full

Just as it looked like Castlebar were settling into the game their centre Ursula Sammon was sent to the bin for a high tackle. Castlebar worked hard and managed to maintain their 5 point lead. Buccaneers probed at Castlebar?s defensive line as Ursula Sammon returned to the pitch 10 minutes later and she made her presence felt after picking up a loose ball on Castlebar?s 22 metre line and sprinted to the posts. Becky Gavin added the extra 2 points on the half time whistle leaving the score at 12-0 to Castlebar. Buccaneers settled into the game early on in the second half and made
set up camp inside Buccaneers half but failed to capitalise on their 14 player defence with Buccaneers standing firm and eventually clearing their lines. Suddenly the home side found themselves under immense pressure on their 5 metre line and can thank the power and determination of number 8 Yvon McNabb who pushed their oncoming ball carrier 10 metres back. A loose ball picked up by Mairéad Hopkins found Emma Doyle on the wing who sprinted into Buccaneers half. The speedy winger linked up with Ursula Sammon who finished the move off under the posts, a try that was converted by Becky Gavin, 19-5 to Castlebar on the full time whistle. begin the new racquetball season with the Autumn League in An Sportlann. The competition, which will begin in Mid October, is a singles round robin league with skill divisions to suit players from beginner level to advanced level. Anyone who wishes to enter can email info@castlebar-racquetball.net or phone 087 9234514, new players & beginners especially welcome Racquetball is an exciting game you can play with two, three or four people. The equipment you need is a racquetball racquet and a ball that is made of rubber and is more lively than a tennis ball. Also required is a pair of goggles so that you can protect your eyes if hit by a fast moving ball. The court is indoors and has four walls, ceiling. All surfaces of the court are in play in racquetball, all the walls and the ceiling. The back wall in some courts is made of glass. An Sportlann, McHale Park, Castlebar houses two courts and De La Salle Community Sports Centre has one court. Racquetball is an offshoot from squash, and has similarities, but yet is a totally different game. Racquetball is a fast game and as you become stronger the you will hit the ball much harder and faster, with top players the speed of the ball can reach 160 mph. You have to be fairly quick on your feet to play especially against a more experienced opponent. It's amazing how much running you can do on a small area of just 40ft by 20 ft. With racquetball you use up lots of energy and burn lots of calories per game. The more you move the more you burn. Racquetball is also a great way in burning off those calories. If you play two times a week, you can maintain your weight, and if you play three or more games a week, you can lose weight. There were many fine performances with Lauren Mc Donnell, Brian Mc Donnell, Gavyn Mc Manamon & Katie Gibbons all taking the Gold individual medals. Our U12 girls (Ella Deely, Eimear Hughes, Sarah Cashin, Julianne Coen, Maia Ludden & Megan Frazer) took the silver medal. Our U12 boys (Gavyn Mc Manamon, Conor Hughes, Oisin O' Connell, Louis Swift & Colm Enright) took the bronze medal. Our U14 girls (Katie Gibbons, Eabha Walsh, Meadbh O Shea, Holly Reilly, Ellen Moran & Saoirse Farrell Scahill) took the bronze medal. Our U14 boys (Tomas Waldron, Oisin Tunney, Bob Tuohy, Liam Coyne, Michael Waldron & Thomas Mc Donnell) took the bronze medal. Our U16 boys (Aaron mc Hale, Kevin Coyne, Padraig Beirne & Emmet Geraghty) took the silver medal. Ronan Loftus ran very well in the U8 boys race as did Conor Loftus, Jack Canny, David Hegarty, Alan Hegarty, Mark Mc Vann, Diarmuid Swift & Oran Ludden in the U10 boys race and Lauren Hamrock & Eva Cahill Galligan in the U 10 girls race. Castlebar Pantomime is based in the County Town of Mayo in the west of Ireland. We are Mayo's longest running Pantomime whose catch phrase is - "Castlebar Pantomime, The Original & The Best! There is a Pantomime tradition within Castlebar going back to at least 1922 with a Stephen Garvey production of "Red Riding Hood". It was from 1951 to 1965 however that the roots of Castlebar Pantomime as we know it today appeared on the stage of the Town Hall, Linenhall Street, Castlebar. ? ? Back then it was people like Jimmy Garvey, Herbie Glynn, Andy McTigue and of course the Queen of Panto Nan Monaghan who entertained the Mayo people with their talented performances and comedy routines. These days its people like Jason Guthrie, Sharon Lavelle, James Murray, Antoinette Starken, Gary Wynne, Mairead McDonnell and many many more. After a small hibernation, Castlebar Pantomime staged the production of Dick Whittington in 1986 and so started the new Castlebar Pantomine tradition which this year sees it celebrating its 30th Anniversary in its current format with our production of The Little Mermaid. In the year 2000, Castlebar Pantomime moved from Linenhall Street, to the The TF Theatre Royal, where it has set up its new home and is now firmly ensconced in their regular January line up

brands based on the experiences of customers, shows that Credit Unions tops the poll. According to the Customer Experience Ireland Survey 2015 (CEXI), Ireland?s Credit Unions including Castlebar Credit Union, are one of the Customer Experience Champions, coming 1st in their ranking. This is extremely good news for credit unions at a time when demand for services is at an all-time high. Keep an Eye on Your Community Planning is now underway for the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020. It is expected that by January 2016, the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government will decide on who will deliver the new LEADER programme in Mayo. The Local Community Development Committee (Mayo County Council), South West Mayo Development Company, Mayo North East LEADER Partnership Company and Comhar na nOileรกn Teo are coming together to draw up a county wide plan ? a Local Development Strategy (LDS) - for the new LEADER programme. They are now seeking the input of communities for the community aspect of the plan. In this community-led process, a number of community consultation meetings are being organised throughout the county so that every area and community has the opportunity to have its needs and ideas for local community projects included in the community element of the LDS. This is an opportunity for your community representatives to contribute to the community aspect of the countywide plan which will lay out how funds for the community element of LEADER will be used over the duration of the programme, until 2020. If you are unable to attend this particular consultation you are welcome to attend another meeting convenient to you. Please feel free to bring it to the attention of other community groups in your locality. There is no limit on the number of attendees from any community. Master-Plan To Transform Castlebar Military Barracks! ?225,000 Village & Town Renewal Scheme to Benefit Mayo
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, has welcomed the ?225,000 for a Rural Economic Development Zone pilot initiative in Mayo. ?Fine Gael is keenly aware of the impact the economic downturn has had on towns and villages throughout Ireland and this year we launched the Standing Up for Rural Ireland campaign to advocate on behalf of rural communities to ensure that the economic recovery spreads to all parts of Ireland. ?This morning (Wednesday) at the National Ploughing Championships I announced ?30 Million under the Capital Investment Plan for Rural Towns and villages. ?The money for Mayo will involve three projects: 1. ?125,000 to begin work on a Master-Plan to transform Castlebar Military Barracks in Castlebar into a regionally important creative hub and visitor attraction. 2. ?50,000 to develop an non-weather dependent facility in Geesala along the Wild Atlantic Way. 3. ?50,000 to help renovate the Court House in Swinford to become a creative hub and secondly to create a historical route around the centre of Swinford to benefit both the inhabitants of the town as well as visitors. This injection of money into all three communities is a welcome develop and forms only part of the Governments commitment to rural Ireland over the coming months. Our job now is to both secure the recovery and make sure it is felt in every home across the country including those in Mayo."

Keep an Eye on Castlebar Entries are now being accepted for the May 2016, Mayo International Choral Festival Now regarded as one of the top four choral festivals in Ireland, the festival committee are looking forward to presenting the winning formula of competitions, street performances and quirky events including a dawn chorus ? now known as the event ?for those rising early on Sunday morning, or for those going home from the celebrations the night before?. The festival is now firmly a fixture in choir?s calendars, not just from Ireland, but from all over the world. ?Already a choir from the USA and from Norway have confirmed that they will travel to the festival in May, and have sent representatives to visit the performing and accommodation facilities in Mayo, and to meet the team members of the festival committee? stated Edward Horkan, Festival Chairman. To take part in the festival, International choirs must forward their completed entry forms before 31st December 2015, and choirs from Ireland before January 31st, 2016. The choral festival is unique in Ireland in that it?s the only county-wide festival in the country, and visiting choirs have performed in Ballina, Ballintubber, Claremorris, Castlebar, Crossmolina, Killala, Knock, Newport and Westport. Said Edward ? ?we look forward to next year?s festival which will see many celebration events, as 2016 marks the festival?s fifth year. It?s hard to believe we have achieved so much in only four years ? to be regarded as one of the top choral festivals in Ireland in such a short time is a remarkable achievement by the committee and the many volunteers and choir members around the county? The festival is supported by Mayo County Council / Castlebar Municipal District and Failte Ireland. May 25th ? 29th 2016.

Keep an Eye on What's Going On ISPCC Childhood Support Service in North Mayo The ISPCC in Mayo is pleased to introduce a new Childhood Support Worker covering the North Mayo area. The ISPCC provides a free, comprehensive, community based one to one support service (including out of hours access) to children and young people who may be experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. This is provided by professional ISPCC support workers. Children and families come to us with a wide range of issues, they are often in a crisis situation and they are unsure where they can access support. Every child and family is unique and has individual needs; however, common reasons for referral include parental separation, grief and loss, children affected by bullying or a traumatic life change for the family. Our approach Our approach is to build upon individual strengths and acknowledge the central role of children in decision making. The active participation of families is built into each intervention plan ensuring that our work makes a lasting difference in the life of each child we work with. Our intervention plans are tailor-made to suit the needs of each individual child with support sessions available in the home or ISPCC centre during the day or out of hours. How does it work? The service aims to intervene to provide children and young people with the necessary supports to promote psychological resilience and maintain their psychological well being, regardless of social or emotional background. Anyone concerned about a child can make a referral to the service. This includes parents, professionals and young people themselves. Putting young people in control The service is for and owned by children, which means: The child can decide if they want to meet with us The child can talk to an ISPCC worker face-to-face, on the telephone or over the web. The child works with us to put a plan in place which will provide support to them in overcoming difficulties in their life Visits happen weekly and usually last for about 6 months, but this can change to suit the needs of each child. Social Inclusion Month Throughout the month of October 2015, Mayo will promote Social Inclusion. Many people in our community are excluded and marginalised as a result of lack of resources and minority status. As a result, they cannot participate in activities which are considered the norm for other people in society. Mayo Social Inclusion Month aims to tackle this inequality and promote Mayo as a "Place for Everyone" With this in mind, during our Social Inclusion MONTH we want to ensure everyone knows about what is available and open to them. Lots of organisations are busy planning events, talks, etc and we want to ensure everyone knows about them. We have set up a Facebook page everyone is asked to like it and help promote it. It?s fairly unfurnished at the moment but with your help it will be full with lots of information, events, etc. Ok, so I am looking for each of you to forward to me anything you are doing during October which has a Social Inclusion theme to it.
